Chapter 1: Prologue

Chapter Text

The night couldn’t be more beautiful. The full moon shown brightly in the sky, surrounded by a sea of stars. Trees swayed gently in the breeze. The ocean’s waves crashed at the bottom of the cliffs. Aziraphale couldn’t ask for a better night for his wedding.

He knelt upon a red silk blanket sprawled across the grass. Beside him sat two gold goblets that awaited his and his love’s blood. Their time had been short, but they knew that their love was true. It was time for them to bind themselves to one another in the ways of their people.

He shifted nervously in front of the mirror. Everything needed to be perfect. He plucked self-consciously at his tunic. “Do I look alright?" He wandered. There was no dress code for binding oneself to one’s love, yet he felt the need to be perfect for tonight. For Aziraphale.

Behind him, the door to his chambers opened. He smiled at the newcomer. “Lucifer! Come to congratulate me?”

The other vampire didn’t return the smile. Lucifer settled a hand on his shoulder. “I am afraid that you will be unable to bind yourself to your beloved Aziraphale this night, my friend.”

His shoulders sagged. “The opposition has made their move.”

            “I’m afraid so.”

“I’ll be ready in a moment.”

Aziraphale awaited his love long into the night, but they never came. The night slowly turned to dawn. The dawn becoming morning and the morning fading to midday. Still, Aziraphale waited. When night came once again, Aziraphale still did not move. His hope for his love’s arrival unwavering.

It wasn’t until three days later that he would move.

Gabriel, his elder, found him where he still knelt upon the red silk blanket. The older vampire grabbed by the arm and yanked him to his feet. “There is a war on!” Gabriel shoved a sword and shield into Aziraphale’s frozen hands.

Without a word, Aziraphale joined his battalion. He fought as he was ordered. Feeling nothing. Still, deep down, he hoped to find his love amongst the other soldiers. Never once did he see his love.

The battle came to an end. The defeated were banished to the shadows of the world by the victors. Still, Aziraphale never saw his love.
