Work Text:

Melbourne Australia 1830s

Kara Danvers and her sister Alex walk into the town of Melbourne to see everyone bustling from here to there not really paying attention to anything or anyone. They were on a mission. They find a place to stay and go to the Mines to mine for gold.

Alex is talking away as Kara's mind wanders.

“Hey Kara, Earth to Kara. Where's your head at?” Alex says, trying to get Kara's attention.

Kara looks up, a questioning look on her face. “What? What was the question?”

Alex laughs, commenting that Kara's head is always in the clouds. Kara shakes her head ignoring her sister's jibes.

They walk to a hotel, seeing the name Melbourne Inn and Suites. Seeing the inviting look of the exterior, they walked in and up to the front desk where there's a gorgeous older blonde waiting.

Kara is dumbstruck; she's never seen such a gorgeous and powerful woman in all her life. They walk to the desk and the older blonde looks up, looks from Kara to Alex then back again, then smiles brightly.

“Hello, I'm Cat Grant. Welcome to my hotel. What can I do for you?”

Kara stutters, asking if there's room available for her and her sister. “See, we’re here for the adventure of mining and building a better life for us. Me and my sister, Alex.”

Cat smiles brightly, “Yes, we have some vacancy. Do you want two rooms or one?”

Kara thinks for a second, “Two; I think my sister would want her privacy.”

Alex nods and says yes to that.

“Here's you two’s keys,” Cat said.

As Cat hands Kara the keys, their hands brush against each other and it makes both of them blush. Alex laughs seeing her sister being a useless lesbian, then takes her key from her and walks away from a dumbstruck Kara.

Kara's room 1 hour later

Kara walks to the door of her room and sighs. She opens the door still thinking of the older blonde.

“Don't even start Alex. She's pretty, yes, but still. I know what you're going to say and I'm not that useless,” Kara says.

“Ok, but you are though. You were a stuttering mess back there and she's pretty, but not my type. Just tell her she's pretty and that you like her if you're interested.” Alex says simply.

Kara sighs, then walks into her room, ignoring her sister.

Meanwhile down at the desk

Cat can no longer hide her smile. She just met what had to be the most beautiful woman she's ever seen; long blonde locks, muscle, and the cutest smile she's ever seen. She has to tell someone and she knows just who.

She walks around the desk and heads to the bar where Sam's working.

“Sam, I just met the most beautiful woman ever and I have to tell you how it went,” Cat says excitedly.

“Who? Cat, I've never seen this side of you before. She must have made quite the impression on you if you're like this.”

Cat hums, thinking of how she will win the younger blonde, and oh, she will win the woman. It's just a matter of how she will do it.

Cat goes on to tell the story of the encounter.

“And oh Sam, what should I do to win this girl?” Cat asks.

Sam thinks, “I think you should be subtle, flirt a little, talk to her. See what she's like. Then, when you feel the time is right, tell her how you feel." Sam shrugged and continued. “Hey, you never know, you may win her based on how you said the interaction went. She probably likes you too.”

Cat was hopeful and hell, Sam was right. She had to take things slow and to not freak the younger blonde out.

Next day

Kara wakes up to Alex banging on the door yelling at her to wake up. Kara knew she had to but didn't wanna get up because she, unlike Alex, wasn't a morning person.

She hollers through the door, “I'm up. I'm up.”

She gets up and gets dressed.

Walking out the door, “Unlike you Alex, I'm not up with the sun.” Kara says with a glare.

Alex snickers, “Well at least you have me to remind you that the sun's up and we have work to do.”

They make it to the entrance and Kara can't help but to look at the reception desk to where Cat was working. She locks eyes with the older blonde and waves. Cat smiles and waves back. Kara blushes and ducks out the door.

Alex slaps her on the back and commences teasing her about her crush. “Hey, daydream when we are back. We got mining to do, lover girl.”

Kara can't help it though. Cat’s gorgeous. Tall, soft looking hair, and a bright smile. If Kara is love struck, who could blame her.

Alex talked the whole way to the Mines, but Kara wasn't listening. She was too busy thinking of ways to get the girl. She could tell her how she feels or she could write poetry. Either way works for her.

Meanwhile at the hotel

Cat begins her usual routine of cleaning her desk when Sam walks up.

“How's it going? Did you talk to her? Did you see her? Tell me Cat.”

“I saw her. She left with her sister for the Mines. No, I didn't get a chance to speak with her, though I did wave hi.”

“That's good, maybe you'll get a chance tonight when she gets in.”

Sam walks away from Cat’s desk back to the bar, there's barely anyone there to keep her busy.

Cat Grant thinks over what she wants to say when a customer walks into the hotel.

On the way back from the Mines

Kara listens to her sister ramble about the fact that they haven't found much gold yet. Kara wishes Alex would stop talking; it's distracting her from what she was thinking about.

“Hey Alex, can you be quiet for a second? I was in the middle of a thought.”

Alex looks up, “hmm, just for that, I think I won't shut up. I think I'll ramble on the whole way to the hotel.”

Kara sighed and continued on ignoring her sister the whole way there.

They walked into the hotel and Kara spotted Cat at the desk talking to Sam. They lock eyes and Cat waves to her. Kara looks away and blushes which makes Alex and Sam laugh.

Next day

Kara gets up before Alex for once and decides to see Cat at the front desk.

Walking to the front desk she waves to Cat.

“Hello Cat, how are you?”

Cat looks up and smiles. “Hello Kara, how are you liking Melbourne?”

“We like it quite well, thank you.” Kara answered.

Kara with a burst of courage asks, “Hey would you like to have dinner with me?”

Cat smiles brightly, “Of course, I'd love to.”

Kara smiles brightly. Cheering in her head.

“Great, let me get washed up and changed and we'll go.”

Cat laughed, “alright, I'll see you in a bit then.”

Kara walks off quickly to get washed up and gets ready for the date and she can't believe she can call it a date.

Kara and Cat's date

Kara stands at her bed looking at her options for her date. Her choices are brown pants,  white buttoned shirt and red neckerchief or black pants, red shirt and brown vest.  She chooses option two and heads down to the front of the hotel to meet Cat.

Meanwhile down in Cat's room Cat is looking at her options for the date. She has a choice between two different dresses, ones blue with black buttons and ones red with black buttons.

She sits there and contemplates the two she loves both but she knows the blue goes with Kara’s eyes and she loves Kara's eyes. Without thinking she grabs the blue, throws it on and heads out to the front door to meet Kara.

Getting to the front door the both noticed each other and caught each other's eye and noticed what the other was wearing.

Kara looks at Cat, “Cat you look beautiful; love the dress. Is it sapphire blue?”

Cat, finally finding her words, “Yes I thought it went with your beautiful eyes. You look rather dashing.”

Kara blushes crimson and smiles. She walks over to Cat, taking her hand, and they walk to the tavern.

As they walked, they talked about everything, their ambitions, their childhoods. Nothing was left unsaid on their way to Jonn’s tavern.

They walk into the tavern through two double doors. It's crowded and smells of ale and smoked meat.

They find a booth at the end of the room where they can go unnoticed and enjoy their date.

They sit and a barmaid walks over, “Hello I'm Daphne, what can I get you for your drinks?”

Kara thinks as Cat asks for gin.

“I'll take a whiskey on rye.” Kara says after a minute.

“They'll be out promptly. As for food, do you need a minute?”

Kara and Cat nod, the barmaid walks away to get the drinks.

Kara takes Cat's hand and begins to talk.

“You know Alex has been teasing me about you for over two days. She called it a "cute woman crush.” She started to rub her thumb over Cat's knuckles. “But I think it's much more than that. Just looking at you, my heart burns.”

Cat looks at her surprised. How on Earth can someone catch such deep feelings for someone when it's only been a few days?

“Kara, I know just how you feel. It surprises me that I could feel so deeply for you so fast. It’s been just a few days. My whole heart is beating for only you.” Cat says.

Kara smiles then, blushing. If they weren't in a public place, she'd grab Cat and kiss her right then and there.

The barmaid walks over with their drinks and sets them down, then asks for their orders.

“I'll have roast beef with potatoes and carrots. And Cat will have the ham with sweet potatoes and cheese.” Kara said before Cat can give an order.

The barmaid walks away to make the orders and Cat begins to smile. She's not much for people taking care or control, but Cat found Kara doing it hot. She had a burning in her abdomen.

When the food got there, they began to eat and there was a comforting silence as they ate.

They go to leave and before Kara can react, Cat says she'll pay.

They walk through the streets of Melbourne at night with smiles on their faces. Cat begins to shake from the cold and Kara takes her brown jacket off and wraps Cat to keep her warm.

Kara walks Cat to her room, “Here is your room I hope I didn't overstep my bounds ordering for you? Was that out of line for me to do?”

Cat smiles, “No, it wasn't out of line. I’m not normally one for partners taking control, but when you did it, I found it hot.”

Kara looks up and into her eyes. “Can I kiss you?”

Cat grabs her and presses her lips to Kara's as soon as the question comes out. To Cat, Kara's lips are soft but firm, and tasted of the whiskey she drank.

As Cat pulls back, Kara chases her lips and kisses her back. It was the best kiss she's ever had.

Kara rests her forehead on Cat's, smiling like a schoolgirl.  She bids her good night and walks to her room.

In Kara's room

Kara laid in bed and contemplated the date. What it means for them both and their feelings. She wants nothing more than to be with Cat Grant and she is already picturing a future, but it can't be here, not in Australia.

The next day

Kara has made a decision. She's going to ask Cat to leave with her. But will Cat go with it?

Cat sees Kara, “Morning my dear, how are you?”

“Morning. I have a question for you. I want nothing more than the rest of my life with you, but you know we can't do that here in Australia. Will you run away with me? It can be a country of your choosing. Just will you?”

Cat looks shocked, but she knows she’s right. They can't make a life here.

“Yes, yes, I'll run with you. You’re right, Australia isn't the best for us. I’ve heard of others having a new start in America. We can go there.”

Cat grabs Kara's hand and they begin to make plans.

Little while later

Kara finds Alex and tells her that Cat and her are running and if she'll go too. Alex laughs, but then seeing the look of determination on her sister's face agrees.

Two years later

Kara rolls over in bed, looking at her beautiful wife and smiles, feeling so happy that she took that chance two years ago in Australia.
