Ominis
Ominis groaned at the light knocking at his door. He rolled over in search of more sleep. He surely hoped it wasn’t Charles with more projects for him to help with in the July heat. The physical labor was exhausting but Charles seemed excited to have another set of hands.
“Ominis dear, it’s almost noon.” Flora called through the door. “Astera will be here in an hour.” The door creaked open. Ominis sat up rubbing his eyes.
“I thought she was still on holiday?” He murmured sleepily. Carina’s mother had taken her brother to France to see relations at the beginning of the summer and had assured them that she would visit when they got back.
“We got her letter this morning, Carina has been getting ready in a flurry of excitement.” Flora chuckled. He heard her step into the room and shuffle through his borrowed wardrobe. “I’m glad Geives and Hawkes were able to get your new clothes finished in time. Hmmmm….ah this one.” Ominis grabbed his wand and cast an orb of ancient magic. He watched as Flora laid out what she wanted him to wear. “Now, hurry and get dressed. We will see you in the drawing room for tea.” Flora left the room quickly.
Ominis sighed as he stood and stretched. His nerves bristled. He was unsure of what to expect from Carina’s mother. Her adoptive mother was for kinder than he could have dreamed. She spent the first week of their vacation acclimating him to the estate and had rather enthusiastically dragged him into London to visit her husband’s tailor. Something about having a proper gentleman’s wardrobe.
Ominis quickly slid on his outfit for the day. Muggles seemed to have an affinity for buttons. Having shrugged on his vest and secured yet another row of buttons, Ominis left his ascot unfinished with a light smirk. After combing his hair into place he grabbed his wand and made his way downstairs.
“Good afternoon sleepy head.” Carina called as he entered the drawing room. With a huff she came over and began fixing his ascot. “You must properly tie it or it won’t stay.” She admonished him. Ominis fought his grin at her attentions.
“Well good morning to you too.” Ominis greeted as he lifted his chin for Carina to adjust his ascot. “Give me a normal tie and I won’t have such issues.” He noted the small smile on her face. She was enjoying herself.
“It is well past noon and you know it!” She huffed again and put her hands on her hips. “Just how late were you up reading in the library?”
Ominis shrugged. “Unlike you, I’ve not been able to finish all of Professor Rackham books. My free time has been dedicated to the new gazebo and garden trellis.” Ominis sighed. He was still sore from the arduous labor. Charles wouldn’t let him help using magic. He had said something about the measure of a man being what he can do with his hands.
Carina pursed her lips. “Well he wouldn’t let me help would he.” She turned and continued setting up her tea service. She took a mug from her tray and placed it in front of him. “Coffee?”
“Please!” Ominis sighed and took the cup. He sat watching her flit around the tables adjusting flower arrangements and fidgeting with pillows on the sofas.
“Carina, she’s here.” Flora called from the front of the house. Ominis heard the front door open. A muffled exchange of French pleasantries and the clicking of heels down the foyer. Carina darted for the door.
“Oh, ma fille. Regarde-toi! Tu m'as manqué! (Oh, my girl. I have missed you!) Carina embraced her mother in a tight hug. As she let go her mother gasped. “Qu'as-tu fait de tes cheveux? Ils sont tellement fous. Tu dois les attacher.” (What have you done with your hair, it is so wild. You must pin it up.) She coiled the lengths over Carina’s shoulder around her fingers.
“Honestly mother.” Carina sighed removing her mothers hand and flipping her hair back over her shoulder. She turned towards him. “Ominis, this is my mother, Astera Beaumont-Malfoy.” Carina stepped aside as Ominis stood.
“ Oh là là ! C'est Ominis? Je ne m'attendais pas à ce qu'il soit si beau. ” (Oh my! This is Ominis? I was not expecting him to be so handsome.) She had stepped forward grasping his face gently between her hands. She turned Ominis’ head side to side to get a better look at him. Ominis raised his brow as he stared over the top oh her head. It seemed Carina got her height from her mother.
“Mother!” Carina exclaimed. Flora giggled from the entryway.
“ Excusez - Moi !” Carina’s mother giggled dropping her hands, covering her smile.
Ominis sighed. “ C-est bien, j'ai eu cette réaction souvent ces derniers temps .” (It is fine, I have been getting that reaction alot of late.) Ominis supposed it was a better introduction than he had hoped for. “ Enchante. Je suis Ominis Gaunt .” He dipped his head slightly. Mrs. Malfoy’s eyes were wide as his magic coated her face, she was very much an older version of Carina.
“Et il parle français !” (And he speaks french!) She exclaimed squeezing Carina’s arm. She turned back to Ominis. “You must forgive me, I mainly speak French to annoy mon ‘usband . Ee is easy to annoy.” Carina’s playfulness seemed to be an acquired trait.
“Speak however you would like.” Ominis politely replied.
“Come Astera, Carina has prepared a lovely tea service for us.” Flora entered the room and began serving each of them tea.
Amicable conversation followed, the weather from Malfoy Manor to the Savage Estate was fine. Carina inquired about her brother. It seemed Young Septimus was spending the day with his father.
“So mon dear, ‘ave you received your O.W.L. results yet?” Astera asked Carina over her teacup. She kept gazing at Ominis, unaware that he was able to see with the light of his ancient magic. He continued on as if he could not see. Carina on occasion handing him things he reached for.
“No, I am sure they will be here any day now.” Carina sighed reaching for a biscuit. “ I am eager to know how I faired.” She seemed disheartened as she nibbled on her treat.
“As if you couldn’t have made all Outstandings.” Ominis scoffed. “Amit will be dethroned as top in our year, I just know it.” Ominis sipped his tea. “I am just hoping I’ve made no Ts.
Astera giggled. “You know Carina well. Always ahead of ‘er studies, always reading.” She sighed.
“I just worry, I put five years of learning into one. I don’t have any other aspirations other than being a healer. My whole future could be on the line.” Carina slouched as she lamented into her teacup.
“Posture!” Both Flora and Astera chimed at the same time. They both burst into a fit of giggles as Carina straightened in her seat.
“Ominis, what do you think of Carina being a Healer?” Astera had turned towards him. Her discerning gaze causing him to straighten in his seat.
“She has my unending support.” Ominis helped him self to a raspberry jam filled biscuit.
“Hmmm, and what does your father think?” She mused as she poured herself a fresh cup of tea freeing him from her gaze.
Wiping his hand on his napkin he turned towards Astera. “I couldn’t rightly care what he thinks. Carina should be able to do as she pleases.”
Astera sat up straight her shoulders relaxed. “Oh Flora, we did well.” She sighed as she smiled.
“Are you done testing him?” Carina chimed in from beside him.
“Mon dear, Morbius Gaunt ‘as been needling away at your father at the Ministry from the moment I let it slip that I was ‘andling any an all of your affairs.” Astera hummed.
“So why say anything at all?” Carina groaned.
“Brutus was already plotting the most advantageous matches.” Astera shuddered rattling her teacup. “I am not going to leave your future to mon dear ‘usband , you’d be dangled above the pureblood masses like a carcass over ‘ungry wolves as your father secured what ee deemed the best match.”
“Then why let it slip around my father. The slimy creature is worse than most.” Ominis furrowed his brow. It made no sense to him. His father was cruel and greedy, he would loathe making any arrangements with him.
“It’s all my fault I suppose.” Flora tilted her head thoughtfully as she spoke. “I have been keeping Astera informed of all of Carina’s friendships, and considering your closeness, this pairing seemed the least objectionable.”
“Of course, you both are still underage, for now. All the other courting tidbits can be dealt with later. And if something more ‘appens to grow from your friendship, then, so be it.” Astera folded her napkin and placed it on the table gently.
Ominis sat in awe of the amount of motherly affection that had leached into the room. He sat back as the conversation steered to Astera’s visit to the French countryside.
***
As late afternoon fell Astera bid her goodbyes, Carina walked her to the door. Ominis helped Flora clear the drawing room. It did not stop him from listening in to their goodbyes.
“Do give Septimus my love.” Carina asked. Ominis knew she wished to see him.
“Of course mon dear. I will bring ‘im along when we go to Diagon Alley for your supplies.”
“That would be lovely.” Ominis could hear the joy in her voice. He wondered what her younger brother was like.
“Do act as a proper lady mon dear, especially with such a ‘andsome boy staying under the same roof.” Astera quipped. Ominis blushed. He had the feeling that Carina’s mother knew that they fancied each other.
“Mother!” Carina gasped in embarrassment. Ominis wondered if her cheeks were as warm as his.
“I was young once too.” Astera sighed.
“I don’t need to relive fathers and your French dalliances.” Ominis cringed.
Astera let out a fit of giggles. “I am just pleased that ee is such an agreeable and ‘andsome young man.”
“Really mother.” Carina gave an exasperated sigh.
“What, is it too much to ‘ope for beautiful grandchildren?” Astera questioned. Ominis let out a choked breath. He coughed. The thought that they would… Flustered, Ominis shook his head. He gathered the tea tray and made his way to the kitchen to escape from the rest of that conversation. He heard Carina’s pitchy reply.
“It’s a bit too soon for that don’t you think.”

Carina
“You have to be less forceful.” Carina sighed. “Just let the magic flow.” Carina called from the railing of the gazebo. She leaned against the railing as she watched Ominis practice forming pillars of stone with ancient magic.
Ominis huffed. “Fluid not forceful, got it.” The look of annoyance on his face as he spoke Parseltongue made Carina grin.
“Precisely.” Carina replied with a hiss of her own.
“Too much hsss at the end.” Ominis corrected as he swirled his wand with less force creating a tall twisting pillar with ancient magic. He was quite the sight with his sleeves rolled up and top two buttons of his shirt undone.
“Parseltongue is all hsss honestly.” Carina lamented as she gazed at him. Ominis had been begrudgingly teaching her Parseltongue most of the summer. Carina could understand most of it well enough, but speaking it in and of itself was a different story, she felt her tongue was too stiff when she spoke. “It makes my tongue feel funny, like it’s too stiff.”
Ominis chuckled. He turned towards her with one raised eyebrow. “Shall I loosen it for you.” He hissed with a smirk.
Carina gaped. She was still dumbstruck when he would flirt with her. She peered around him to Flora watering flowers in the solarium. “Too many eyes!” She replied. Flora was ever present during the day and with her and Charles home in the evenings, any time truly alone was scarce.
Ominis chuckled. “Too much sssh at the beginning my Star.” He turned towards his pillars. With a wave of his wand they disintegrated.
Carina pouted. She stepped down from the gazebo. “Despite my mispronunciation, I think I am doing quite well.” She covered her eyes and she looked up at the sky, it was nearing noon.
“By all accounts, I’ve never heard of anyone learning Parseltongue, you are remarkable.” Ominis smiled down at her as he smoothed back his hair. He had yet to let her or Flora attempt to cut it, its lengths were getting quite long.
Carina sighed dreamily at his smile. “Shall we head in, I’m sure you are starving.”
“Amongst other things.” Ominis replied as he reached out and tugged the length of her braid. Carina blushed.
“Let’s go before you get us in trouble.” Carina spoke in a hushed voice as she looked to the solarium again. Flora had her back turned as she set down her watering can and closed the door. She turned to them and smiled.
“I believe Tobbs has lunch ready” Flora dusted her hands on her apron.
They headed inside and helped themselves to a refreshing lunch curtesy of Tobbs. The house elf enjoyed coming and cooking for them. Carina also spied him helping Flora with chores. When asked where the housekeeper and footman were; Flora stated that they gave them the summer off with pay. Apparently they didn’t want them to make Ominis uncomfortable and it made it easier for them to practice their magic with Charles being the only muggle present.
As they were finishing lunch Charles entered the kitchen with a broad grin on his face.
“What are you up to now?” Flora scolded with her hands on her hips.
“And who said that I am up to anything?” Charles attempted to school his features. His blue eyes crinkled with mirth.
“You wore the same expression when you roped poor Ominis into building the gazebo.” Carina countered. She remained seated at the table in the breakfast nook. She grinned as she watched Ominis cringe out of the corner of her eye. “And when you dragged him outside to help you chop wood or fix things around the estate.
“I’ve honestly just tested how he uses magic to see.” Charles scoffed. “Besides it truly wasn’t that difficult to build the gazebo.” Charles pouted. “And chopping wood builds character.”
“I believe I have enough character to last a lifetime.” Ominis bemoaned from his place at the kitchen counter. His magic orb hovering just above his head.
“Well, if that’s the case,” he pulled two envelopes from his blazer pocket, “I’ll deposit these elsewhere.”
“Are those our O.W.L.s!” Carina jumped from her seat at the table. In her rush she tripped on the kitchen rug. Ominis quickly caught her. Her cheeks heated.
“Mind you be careful, you are liable to break your neck.” He helped her stand straight. She remained at his side holding his arm to steady herself.
Charles leaned against the door frame with a bellyaching chuckle. Flora stepped towards him with pursed lips and held out her hand. Charles muttered something under his breath but handed the envelopes over. Flora promptly turned and handed them to Carina and Ominis.
Carina’s hands shook as she opened hers. She felt as if someone had set loose a bucket of flobber worms in her stomach. She unfolded the parchment and read.
Carina stared at her results with mixed emotions. She couldn’t believe that she actually did it. Her paper was pried from her hands by Ominis.
“Hey!” She exclaimed glaring at Ominis. He gave a true toothy smile at her results with his wand held to the page.
“I knew you’d get all Outstandings!” He turned his smile to her. It caused Carina to swallow hard. He turned back to her results. “Lunette?” Ominis crinkled his nose at her middle name. “I never would have guessed that to be your middle name.”
“Oh hush, I was born on the full moon, mother thought it would be symbolic given how I look.” Carina huffed as he chuckled. She snatched Ominis’ results off of the counter where he placed them. She glanced down to see how he faired.
Carina smiled down at his results. “Not a T in sight.” She hummed. She quite liked his full name. “Suppose we can take Alchemy together this year since we both passed Arithmacy, Potions and Transfiguration. Oh! Advanced Arithmacy as well.” Carina bounced in excitement.
“Just how many classes do you think you can take…” Ominis’ brow furrowed. “We are supposed to drop those that are unnecessary.”
Carina really didn’t want to drop any classes, but the work load was sure to grow. “I could do without Care of Magical Creatures…” It was one she didn’t need to be a healer. Besides, she had her vivariums.
“Thankfully I can give up Astronomy.” Ominis sighed. He looked relieved. “We can send in our class change requests to Professor Sharp.”
Flora and Charles came to look over their scores. “Well done! You both did admirably.” Charles gave Ominis a heavy pat on the back.
“Thank you, sir.” Ominis coughed in recovery.
***
“There they are!” Carina called, she pulled Ominis along by the crook of his arm. Her mother and Septimus stood outside the Leaky Cauldron.
“Ina!” Septimus cried. He broke into a sprint and barreled into Carina giving her a tight hug.
“Look at you! You’ve gotten so tall.” Carina patted the top of his head. He looked up at her with his pale icy grey eyes, a decidedly Malfoy trait. He gave a dimpled smile.
“Father says that I might be as tall as him!” He beamed up at her. He looked to Ominis quizically.
Carina turned to Ominis, she watched as his eyes still had the glow of ancient magic, a trick that they had just perfected in time for their trip to Diagon Alley. She hoped that since the magic was cast at the Estate that it wouldn’t trigger the trace.
“Septimus Malfoy, and you are?” Septimus held out his hand for Ominis to shake. Carina fought a giggle.
“I’m Ominis, Ominis Gaunt” even though he was using his ancient magic to see he did not take Septimus’ proffered hand.
“Well aren’t you going to shake my hand?” Septimus asked furrowing his blonde brow.
Ominis waved his hand in front of his face. “I can’t very well see the gesture can I.” He held out his hand for Septimus to shake instead.
“So father was right, you truly are blind.” Septimus exclaimed as he shook Ominis’ hand. He stood on his tiptoes to stare into Ominis’ face.
“And you knew who I was well before you spoke with me.” Ominis countered with a smirk.
“Mother says that I must always make a proper introduction.” Septimus mused. Her mother made her way towards them and placed a dainty hand on his shoulder. He appeared to have more he wanted to say.
“Your mother is right of course.” Ominis hummed.
“Shall we.” Astera guided Septimus to the inn.
“It’s been ages since I’ve been to Diagon Alley.” Carina tilted her head towards Ominis, she looped her arm around the crook of his elbow for show.
“I can say the same. Sebastian and Solomon usually did our shopping, but at Hogsmeade.” Ominis followed her lead into the inn and through the brick passage.
They started at the Malkin’s Robes for All Occasions. Carina was pleased with the array of uniform styles, she was surprised to see women’s knickerbockers. She added them to the several things she wished to try. She smiled as she entered the fitting room. Mrs. Malkin quickly pinned and altered each item as Carina tried them on. From the privacy of the fitting room she’s listened to Septimus, it seemed he had many questions for Ominis.
“Do you like being in Slytherin?” Septimus asked.
“I would say so, my whole family has been in Slytherin, we are Slytherin’s descendants.” Ominis answered blandly.
“Do you like the color green?” Her brother hummed. Carina scoffed.
“Never seen it.” Ominis deadpanned.
Without missing a beat. “How do you read if you can’t see?” Where was Septimus getting these questions.
“With braille.” Carina could picture Ominis pinching his brow.
“But what if something isn’t in braille?” Septimus added to his inquiry.
“Ever heard of a wand? Quite useful l must say.” Ominis countered with his dry humor. It made her smile.
“Is it true that you are going to marry my sister?” Carina blushed.
“You are full of questions.” The pitch in Ominis’ voice had shifted ever so slightly. Carina wished he would have answered his question. The thought deepened her blush.
“Perhaps I don’t wish to share her.” Septimus pouted. She could picture his pointed little face scrunching as he spoke.
“Perhaps that’s not your choice.” Ominis chuckled.
“Well from what father says, it’s not either of yours.” Septimus paused for a moment and continued. “What does one do when they court anyway?” Carina palmed her face. Her parents really needed to discuss personal affairs in private.
“Septimus, that is enough.” Astera admonished.
“Sorry mother.” Her brother mumbled.
Carina heard her mother sigh before she spoke again. “Now, Ominis. I think it is time your school wardrobe is upgraded. Knickerbockers really only suit the younger students. I ‘ad Flora send your measurements to Mr. and Mrs. Malkin. They ‘ave your new uniforms ready.
“That was thoughtful, thank you.” Ominis murmured, Carina could picture him rubbing the back of his neck in embarrassment. She continued to listen as she tried on her uniforms and robes. After Mrs. Malkin’s skilled wand work and alterations they all seemed to fit well. Stepping out of the dressing room she was pleased with her selection.
“You want these?” Her mother gestured to the knickerbockers as she paid for their new uniforms.
“For flying with Imelda. She wants me to join the house team, but I know I won’t have time.” Carina sighed, she did enjoy flying though.
“Where to next?” Ominis asked as they stepped out of the shop.
“I want to go to Flourish and Blotts for our books.” Carina also wanted to see what other books they had to offer.
“Perhaps we should split up.” Her mother hummed looking at their supply lists.
“Good idea, Carina will take hours in a bookshop.” Ominis grinned. She scowled up at him. He winked at her and she felt her cheeks heat.
“Well boys, if you’ll follow me, I ‘ave some things to ‘andle at Gringotts and then we can get all the other supplies while Carina enjoys ‘er books.” Carina gave a questioning look to her mother. She was up to something.
“But I wanted to go with Ina.” Septimus whined at their mother.
“But if you go with her, who is going to describe things for me. You can give me a detailed description of Gringotts.” Ominis mused with a small grin. Perhaps he knew her mother was up to something too.
“Oh, all right.” Septimus pouted.
Carina watched as her mother looped her arm through Ominis’. She gave them a wave as they turned away.
Carina made her way to Flourish and Blotts. Upon entering she grabbed a shopping basket and gathered the books that she and Ominis would need for the year. “I’ll be purchasing these.” She placed her basket of school books on the counter by the shopkeeper. “I just wanna look around to see if there are any other books I might want.” The shopkeeper, looked up from the book they were reading and smiled. Carina turned and took to the stacks.
She found an interesting ingredient book labeling rare ingredients across the wizarding world. She enjoyed the detailed indices listing the effects of each. But it was the book she found on the next shelf that completely grabbed her attention. The Advanced Potioneer’s Guide to Remedies and Healing: From Flesh Wound to Maladictation. She was flipping through the aged pages when she heard her name. She looked up to see a friendly face.
“Amit! How wonderful to see you.” She spied some adventure novels under a few star charts in his arms.
“How are you my fellow star gazer.” Amit smiled down at her.
“I am well, just picking up a few extra books along with our N.E.W.T textbooks.” Carina gushed. “How has your summer been?”
“It has been quite relaxing, we just returned from India a few days ago. I will have to show you the new Sky Atlas I got while we were there. The depictions of the sky rendered on the pages are astounding.” He had a distant dreamy look to his eyes as if he were gazing at the stars. There was a scoff behind them.
“Well if it isn’t the two biggest brains in our year discussing their true loves, books.” Leander Prewitt appeared with a book of his own tucked under his arm. Carina raised her brow. Mastering Quidditch: An In-depth Guide .
“Hello Leander, how are you?” Carina grinned. She wondered if he planned on trying out for his house team.
“I’m well thanks. My father just bought me a new broomstick celebrating my seven O.W.L.s.” He puffed his chest in pride.
“Seven, congratulations. I myself have ten.” Amit beamed. “How about you my friend? I know you had a challenging year.” Amit turned to Carina to ask.
“I did fairly well, eleven O.W.Ls.” She shrugged.
“Eleven? You can’t be serious! Then again I suppose getting an Acceptable isn’t that hard.” Leander sneered. She raised her brows in surprise at his ire.
“I have eleven Outstandings, if you must know Leander. Though I don’t go about boasting my results.” Carina admonished with a fire of her own. Leander huffed and left to purchase his book.
“Deep rivers move with silent majesty, Shallow brooks are noisy.” Amit mused as he watched the Gryffindor leave.
“Such a lovely proverb.” Carina smiled. She chatted with Amit a while longer. He left with her promise to share books when they returned to school.
Carina collected the intriguing books she found and made her purchases at Flourish and Blotts. As she was leaving, she found her family and Ominis outside of Magical Menagerie. It seemed that Septimus was quite confused.
“So you don’t have a pet?” He asked Ominis.
“I don’t particularly care to have one.” Ominis shrugged as he angled his head down as he spoke with Septimus.
“Why wouldn’t you want one?” Septimus had his nose crinkled in an adorable scowl.
“And how exactly am I supposed to see to care for one?” Ominis sighed as he rubbed the back of his neck.
“Well, with your wand, obviously. You use it for everything don’t you?” Septimus retorted matter of factly. “ You said you had an E in Care of Magical Creatures.”
“The only reason I did so well in Care of Magical Creatures was the help I received from your sister.” Ominis sighed again. “Believe me the last thing I need is a pet.”
“Septimus, don’t you think you’ve asked Ominis enough questions today?” Carina called as she approached them.
Her mother giggled as Septimus puffed out his cheeks in embarrassment. “Not hardly.” He pouted.
They all laughed as they returned to The Leaky Cauldron. Carina bid her mother and Septimus goodbye with a smile and lengthy hugs.
“So, how was shopping with those two?” Carina asked as they took their bags of supplies out into the busy London street.
“Enlightening to say the least. They are an interesting pair. I did quite enjoy myself.” Ominis had an easy smile on his face as they returned to the Savage Estate.

Ominis
Ominis rested his head back on his seat aboard the Hogwarts Express. The rumbling of the train car lulling him to sleep. Carina and Poppy sat across from him. Carina was immersed in a book and Poppy regaled tales from her summer with her gran.
“Apparently there are Golden Snidgets in the Forbben Forest, or atleast a crumbling book at Gran’s says there is.” Poppy exclaimed. Ominis cracked open his eyes, the magic film that coated the train car came from the magic he and Carina had localized to his eyes. He watched as Poppy pulled out a torn piece of parchment.
Carina peered at it over her book. “That is intriguing.” She hummed as she returned to her book.
“Why exactly are you reading a muggle medicine book?” Poppy asked as she safely tucked away her find.
“I’ve had an idea for treating Anne’s pain, but I need certain muggle things to make it work.” She then discussed the pain tincture she planned to make, only she felt it was missing something.
“Well, that is bound to make Sebastian happy.” Poppy smiled. “He wrote often, seems Anne’s condition has not changed.”
Ominis surely hoped whatever Carina had in mind helped. The sadness he felt for Anne and Sebastian was making a hollow pit in his gut. He closed his eyes and allowed the train to once again lull him into a nap.
***
“Merlin’s beard, look at you!” Sebastian exclaimed. Ominis raised his brow from his seat beside Carina at the Slytherin table. He inclined his head towards his friend.
“Awful hard with eyes like mine.” Ominis replied coolly. Ominis fought a grin. He had missed his friend.
“It’s nice to see your candor hasn’t changed.” Sebastian took a seat beside him. “I’d say staying with muggles suits you.” Ominis watched the film that coated his friend, his features now less rounded, more angled.
“I think Charles was sad to see us leave.” Carina giggled. “He had Ominis hard at work all summer despite his so called ‘limitations.’”
“Atleast you got some sun.” Sebastian remarked. “You were starting to develop a deathly pallor.”
“I think living in the dungeon for the last few years would be the root cause don’t you.” Ominis crooked a grin.
“So, what tortures were you subjected to this summer?” Carina asked around him. Sebastian rested his chin on his hand as he looked Ominis over.
“Oh, you know, fixing carts, shutters. How not to fall off a roof when fixing a leak. I think I tilled every garden patch by hand.” Sebastian sighed. “I now know how to properly shear sheep by hand and milk goats.”
“Sounds delightful.” Carina crinkled her nose. Ominis found the expression quite cute and not unlike her little brothers.
Ominis sat back as they talked about Anne, already aware that her condition was much unchanged. “So anyway, when our results came, Anne got 7 out of 9. Which is great all things considered.” Sebastian grinned. “Solomon was disappointed that I only got 8 out of 10 O.W.L.s. Says I was too distracted. History of Magic is not my favorite class, happy to give it up honestly and you’ll agree we are both dreadful at Divination.” Sebastian clapped his hand on Ominis’ shoulder.
“I actually got an Acceptable in Divination.” Ominis lifted his brows, his practical portion had been on palm reading.
“My word, so the blind can now see! It’s a miracle.” Sebastian gasped.
“Ha ha!” Ominis replied dryly. The remark not entirely false. His next retort was cut short by the opening of the doors to the Great Hall. A hush fell over the hall. Professor Weasley lead the huddled group of first years to stand just infront of the head table. He was able to watch as she placed the Sorting Hat on its stool and waited. He saw Carina shift in her seat, she had missed this part last year.
Without much preamble the Sorting Hat opened its ripped seam and began its song.
It’s a tale both old and new.
So I’ll spill it for the lot of you.
Shrewd Slytherin only let a few in,
When the feud truly would begin.
Bold Gryffindor opened the door,
To let in so many many more.
Wise Ravenclaw parted her maw,
To teach them all what she saw.
Loyal Hufflepuff made lots of stuff,
So none would make a huff.
So we think back to the past,
And remember the things that last.
In times as old as goblins gold,
And caverns deeper than stories told.
There is no truer friendship you will find,
When thoughts and hearts aligned.
For secrets kept when some have crept,
And Magic deep while others slept.
Our Founders favor has kept us safe,
Without their knowledge minds shall chafe.
So with those four gone,
I must alone carry on.
For I will find which house you fit,
But first on this stool you must sit.
The hall erupted in applause. Professor Weasley cleared her throat and began calling students to be sorted.
“The sorting hats song…” Carina whispered to Ominis so low as to not be overheard, “Seems foreboding don’t you think.”
Ominis hummed his agreement. It brought to mind the Keepers and the goblin that had singled out Carina last year.
As the sorting finished the feast began with no great lecture or speech from Professor Black. Ominis kept up a hearty conversation with Sebastian while they ate. After a while Carina was pulled down the table by Imelda to talk with some of the girls.
“You have to be at Quidditch try outs on Saturday.” Imelda all but pleaded. As Captain of the house team she seemed desperate to build the best team roster.
“Imelda, I simply will not have time for quidditch.” Carina sighed. “I’m taking eleven classes.”
“Eleven?” Violet McDowell exclaimed, “Why not drop some?”
“I did drop Care of Magical Creatures.” Carina explained. “But I picked up Alchemy.”
“I do not envy you.” Nerida Roberts quipped.
“Hey, are you even listening to me?” Sebastian pushed Ominis.
“Not hardly.” He elbowed Sebastian in the ribs.
“Ooof, no need to jab me with such force.” Ominis watched as he rubbed his ribs. “I asked how things are going between the two of you.” Ominis felt his ears heat.
“Fine, I suppose.” He enjoyed flirting with her and making her flustered. But things were just that, their friendship remained and their relationship seemed to be at a standstill. They rarely had a moment to themselves over the summer. “What of you and Sweeting?” Ominis would much rather divert the conversation away from his confusing thoughts.
“She visited Feldcroft over the summer.” Sebastian fought the grin on his face. “I suppose things are going very well.” Sebastian hid his grin with his hand.
“You are incorrigible.” Ominis pinched his brow. There was no telling what the two of them had been up to.
“What did Sebastian do now?” Carina returned to her seat.
Sebastian cleared his throat. “I only asked Ominis if he wanted to sneak into the Restricted Section with me tonight.”
“Oh! Can I come!” Carina asked excitedly.
“Absolutely not, neither of you are sneaking off any where.” Ominis palmed his face. “I do not want a repeat of last year.”
“Oh alright.”Sebastian agreed with a toothy grin. Happy to have the conversation changed.
***
The first week of classes was equivalent to a hail storm. The courses were spaced out but the sheer amount of homework that Ominis and the rest of the sixth years found them selves buried under was stifling.
By Friday Ominis was already world weary as he ate lunch with Sebastian and Carina at the Slytherin table.
“We only have Potions left today.” Sebastian sighed.
“Sharp is never light on homework.” Ominis was not looking forward to more work.
“I’ll worry about that later. I need to get in some time on the pitch for Quidditch tryouts tomorrow.” Sebastian groaned. “Carina, will you be trying out?”
“No.” She sat with her nose in a book, quill in hand quickly writing.
“What are you doing?” Sebastian asked leaning over to peer at her parchment.
“Finishing my Transfuguration essay.” She rolled up her parchment and sealed it with her wand.
“But that’s not due till next Wednesday.” Sebastian exclaimed.
Carina narrowed her eyes at Sebastian. “I cannot afford to fall behind. Now, are we ready to head to Potions?” She stood shrugging her bag over her shoulder.
Ominis and Sebastian followed her to the Potions class room. Professor Sharp stood at a potion station set up beside his desk arranging several cauldrons. They appeared to have different potions in each one. They took the left side station along with Garreth Weasley.
“Good, everyone is here.” Sharp limped his way to the chalk board. “As N.E.W.T students the proficiency of your potion making will be expected to drastically improve. This year we will be brewing difficult and often times dangerous potions. For your lesson today, each table will be tasked with identifying the six potions I have prepared for you and formulating an antidote for what your group sees as the most dangerous.”
Each group took turns looking over and stirring the potions at the front of the room. Their table was last. When it was their turn Ominis stood to the side as they approached the first cauldron.
“Look at that color!” Garreth exclaimed in a whisper.
“Looks like melted acid pops, it’s such a bright green.” Sebastian mused.
“It’s Shrinking Solution.” Carina whispered. Ominis had to agree, he could smell the daisy roots and shrivel fig ruby.
“Alright then, next.” Garreth moved to the next potion. With his magic Ominis watched little droplets break the surface of the cauldron as they jumped.”
“Merlin’s beard! It’s liquid gold.” Sebastian stirred the potion disturbing the leaping droplets.
Carina cocked her head. A thoughtful look on her face. “Felix Felicis, liquid luck.” She said in a hushed voice.”
“Was just about to say that.” Sebastian nodded. Carina shook her head and sighed.
“Look at this. It’s just water.” Garreth stirred the next potion. “Think it’s standard potioning water?”
“It’s odorless, if it’s clear… has to be Veritaserum.” Ominis murmured.
“It is.” Carina hummed with a smile.
“Ughhh, look at this, gotta be polyjuice potion.” Sebastian whispered with a grimace.
“Obviously.” Replied Garreth. Ominis heard the goopy bubbling. He was glad he couldn’t make out the detail of the potion.
“I’ve not a clue what this one is.” Sebastian murmured.
“What does it look like?” Ominis asked glancing at the still surface of the full cauldron.
“Clear. Like the one we thought was veriteserum.” Garreth murmured. Carina looked bored as they worked out what he was sure she already knew.
“It’s not quite odorless, it has a slightly floral scent like Asphodel root.” Ominis was having a hard time smelling the potion over Carina’s floral hair oil.
“It’s Draught of Living Death, careful not to inhale too deeply, lest we not be able to wake you.” Carina quietly sighed.
“You really are something.” Garreth smirked. He turned to the last potion. “This one sure is pretty.”
“Oh…” Carina gasped as she gazed at the potion in shock. Ominis furrowed his brow at her reaction. She worried her lip with her teeth and looked up at him. She quickly tucked a loose hair behind her ear and looked away. Why was she embarrassed?
“I’d know that smell anywhere.” Sebastian hummed and he took a deep inhale of the last potion. He wore a contented smile on his face.
Ominis leaned forward as he held his wand over the cauldron and took a deep breath. Carina’s dewy floral scent. Worn pages of Carina’s well read books. The same ones she would read to him in front of the fireplace in the Savage estates library. And Toffee. Without even knowing what a Mother of Pearl sheen looked like, Ominis knew for certain that this potion was Amortentia. Carina’s sudden embarrassment now made perfect sense. He wondered what she smelled.
“What do you guys smell?” Sebastian queried. A look of smugness on his face. Ominis saw Carina purse her lips and narrow her eyes at him.
Garreth leaned over the cauldron and gave an appreciative sniff. “Honestly… I can’t smell anything over Carina’s perfume.” Garreth murmured as he shrugged. Sebastian and Carina gasped. Ominis did not relish the bitter taste that flooded his mouth. He glared at Garreth. He felt the strongest urge to curse him.

Carina
“Godric’s heart.” Carina whined as she whispered. A blush heating her cheeks. “That’s Amortentia, Garreth, it smells like what ever attracts you the most.” She glanced at Ominis all but glaring daggers at Garreth. Clearly jealous. Carina pinched her brow. It was hard for her to think. Her brain fogged with the smell of a rain drenched cedar forest. A hint of coffee and wood smoke.
“Shit.” Garreth swore. His freckled face turning bright red. He retreated to their table.
Carina shook her head to clear her thoughts and returned to her seat. She pulled her potions book towards her and began flipping to the antidotes chapter.
“Well, which one’s the most dangerous?” Sebastian murmured quietly as he sat to her left. Clearly trying to diffuse the tension.
“Depends.” Carina looked to the other tables. Everyone had their heads down, as if they were still arguing in what was the most dangerous.
“On what exactly?” Garreth asked meekly. His normal grandeur lessened.
“Well, let’s compile aspects that we know for each potion. Shrinking solution can shrink you into nonexistence and is lethal if brewed incorrectly.” Carina began to summarize. “Liquid luck allows your endeavors to succeed but is disastrous if brewed wrong, and with over use causes giddiness and recklessness, too much is highly toxic.”
“Oh, and veritaserum will have you spilling your deepest secrets to anyone.” Sebastian whispered excitedly.
Carina nodded. “Polyjuice potion allows you to change into any person…scary how that can be used in the wrong hands.” Carina shuddered.
“Suppose Draught of Living Death speaks for itself then.” Garreth shrugged.
“It can be cured easily with wiggenweld if it isn’t brewed too strongly though.” Carina replied. “And finally Amortentia insights a powerful level of control almost similar to the Imperius curse.” Carina lowered her voice even further. “Creating such a strong level of infatuation that mimics love.”
“So you’re saying it’s the most dangerous…” The glow of ancient magic glinted in Ominis’ eyes as he angled his head towards her.
“Unequivocally.” Carina returned to her book to work out an antidote.
“Would a bezor be a good enough antidote?” Sebastian asked.
“It’s not a poison.” Carina sighed. As she flipped through her textboook. Her attention was called as Sharp cleared his throat.
“I hope that you all have ruminated on each potion.” He turned and vanished each one. “Your group’s thoughts and prospective antidote are due by next Friday. You are dismissed.”
Garreth abruptly stood and fled the dungeon classroom pushing past Natty and Poppy at the table next to theirs. They looked to each other before looking back to Carina. She shrugged. They turned their attention back to Samantha Dale at their table.
“I’ll see the two of you at the common room later.” Carina tugged Ominis’ sleeve as she walked past. “I’m going to see if Professor Fig is in.” Ominis furrowed his brow.
“Alright then.” Sebastian called as she left the classroom.
***
“Perhaps you shouldn’t eat so much?” Carina crinkled her nose at Sebastian as he stuffed his face like a man starved.
He swallowed hard. “But steak and kidney pie is one of my favorites! And I’ve got to hurry so I can get out to Quidditch tryouts.” He shoved another fork full into his mouth.
“I can’t see you and even I can tell you are disgusting.” Ominis sneered beside her. From what she could tell he wasn’t using his ancient magic to see. Sebastian finished his lunch in record time.
“Alright Ominis, let’s go.” Sebastian stood and stretched.
“Good luck out there.” Carina called as she gathered her bag.
“Thanks, I’m sure I’ll need it. Wish I would have stolen some liquid luck.” Sebastian mused.
“That’s illegal.” Ominis sighed.
“Anyway, have fun. I’ll probably still be in the Library when you are finished.” Carina sighed.
“Are you sure you don’t want me to come with you?” Ominis asked her. His brow furrowed ever so slightly. He was trying to keep his expression blank.
“Sebastian needs all the support he can get, besides, I’ve only a short amount of time with the book I requested from the restricted section.” Carina waved as she left the great hall.
***
Sunshine filtered through the library windows as Carina sat immersed in Moste Potente Potions. She scribbled her deductions for her tables potions assignment earlier and polished off the assignment. Now she was looking for something to stabilize her tincture for Anne.
Someone cleared their throat. Carina looked up to see Garreth fidgeting across from her. “Hello Garreth.” Carina raised her brow. He seemed quite uncomfortable.
“Uhh…ummm… mind if I join you?” He asked shifting His weight from foot to foot.
“If you aim to help with our potions assignment, I finished it an hour ago.” Carina continued to stare at him with an eyebrow raised.
“Oh…well…” Garreth stammered. His freckled face was pale, and a sheen a sweat coated his brow.
“Just sit down.” Carina sighed. “You look like you are about to pass out.” She knew he must be embarrassed from class yesterday. He plopped into the chair across from her.
“I…I am conflicted. I…oh …bloody hell…I’ve fancied you since last year.” Garreth dropped his face in his hand. “And it’s so obvious you don’t fancy anyone.” Carina’s brow twitched. This boy was an idiot, cute, but still an idiot. “I’ll get over it no worries. I just feel like an arse for things I said last year.”
“Well, you should. I can’t even wear trousers in the castle without worrying I’ll be seen.” Carina admonished.
“I’d like to start over.” He said straightening in his chair.
“Really.” Carina asked. She scrunched her nose in confusion.
“Yes.” Garreth cleared his throat. “I’m Garreth, Garreth Weasley, potions prodigy.” He reached across the table offering his hand for Carina to shake. She giggled.
“Hello Garreth, it’s nice to meet you. I’m Carina Mmm. Carina Savage.” She choked out another giggle, she almost slipped up. “At least I’m not smuggling you a fwooper feather this time.”
“I was sure it would work.” Garreth sighed. “So what are you reading.”
“Moste Potente Potions.” Carina returned to her reading.
“What in Merlin’s name do you need from there?” Garreth and come around to look at the book. He took the seat beside her.
“Researching actually, I have to research and propose prospective cures for a malady of my choosing for my St. Mungo’s application when we graduate.” Carina hummed.
“Don’t tell me you’re trying to cure Sallow’s sister….blimey…that’d be amazing.” Garreth spoke in awe.
“I plan to treat her pain, I doubt I can cure her.” Carina decided to leave out her other project…Ominis and his eyesight.
“And to think I just want to be a renowned potioneer. My Aunt is not pleased.” Garreth leaned back in his chair.
“I see you having a joke shop.” Carina giggled. Garreth shrugged, the motion sending his chair falling back. Carina burst in to a fit of giggles. She got up and helped up a chuckling Garreth. A loud shhhh echoed from Madam Scribner.
Carina returned to her seat and Garreth returned to the other side of the table. They sat in companionable silence while Carina took notes.
“Carina!” A loud whisper echoed. She looked up to see Poppy and Natty approaching.
“Come to work on your potions assignment?” Carina asked. She watched their questioning gaze to Garreth’s presence.
“We have, Samantha Dale is sick in the hospital wing and we assured her we would get it done.” Poppy sighed as she took a seat. She pulled out her textbook with a grimace.
“I take it that you are working on yours as well?” Natty asked quizzically.
“Ours was just finished. No thanks to Sebastian and Ominis, they’ve been down at the quidditch pitch. Our House tryouts are today.” Carina sighed grabbing another sheet of parchment for her notes.
“I’m surprised Imelda didnt make you part of the team by default.” Poppy looked shocked.
“Are you skilled at quidditch?” Garreth asked.
“I’m a fast flyer, I beat all of Imelda’s time trials last year. “Carina looked up from her notes. “She wanted me to try out but I’ve too many classes, and this research is important.”
“So Leander wasn’t joking when he said you were boasting eleven Outstanding O.W.L.s.” Garreth looked surprised.
“Boasting? If anything he was in Flourish and Blotts bragging about seven and the new broomstick his father bought him.” Carina curled her lip in disgust.
“Leander has been quite insufferable of late.” Natty rubbed her temples.
“His father works at the Ministry, he comes by the pompous nature naturally.” Garreth propped his chin on his hand. “I often wonder if half of what he says is true.”
“What slander is he spreading this time?” Poppy leaned forward, curious as ever.
“Well he says that Adelaide Oakes’ Uncle is working with unsavory goblins.” Garreth gestured at at the ceiling. “I’ll eat my tie if that’s true” Garreth scoffed. “He also says his father overheard Morbius Gaunt doing more dealings in the Ministry. That would be Ominis’ father.” Garreth looked between them, eyes landing on Carina as if she didn’t already know who he was. How could she forget the man, his lackluster brown hair and cold brown eyes. His cruel sneer that he directed at his son.
“What kind of dealings?” Carina asked. She was sure she already knew.
“Well word is, the Head of Governors, Brutus Malfoy; he has a daughter who is close to marriageable age. Caused a whole hiccup with the pureblood community. Apparently the Malfoy Heiress comes with a sizable fortune for a dowry, and Morbius Gaunt wants it.”
“Does he really?” Carina replied cooly. Poppy and Natty sat wide eyed as they looked between the two of them.
“Only thing is, Astera Malfoy has taken charge of her daughter’s affairs. No one’s seen the girl, most assume they sent her to Beauxbatons since Astera is French.” Garreth leaned in. “But Leander says he saw Astera and her young son in Diagon Alley, and who was with them…Ominis…” Garreth flared his hands for dramatic effect. “Leander’s mother popped into Malkins’ to pick up an order and overheard the Malfoy boy and Ominis talking about courting and marrying his sister.”
“Oh!” Poppy jumped up smiling. “That’s truly wonderful.”
“Garreth, you gossip like an old maid.” Natty sighed into her textbook with a pleased smile on her face.
“Look, I’m not saying that I’m not happy for the bloke…it’s just Leander says his father also heard that Ominis’ older brother was upset that Astera Malfoy didn’t pick him. Bunch of bad blood in that family…no pun intended.” Garreth sat back in his chair.
This last bit was news to Carina. But she knew that once her mother was set on something, well, she got it. She shrugged, “Is Leander creative enough to come up with all of that himself?” She returned to her book trying to appear indifferent.
“It is a riveting tale.” Natty giggled. “I must say it was most enthralling.”
“You’d make a great Quidditch commentator.” Poppy looked up from her textbook.
“I’d rather play quidditch.” Garreth grumbled.
“I look forward to beating you on the pitch!” Sebastian came striding forward. He popped down into an empty chair. “Ladies.”
“Well hello, does that mean you made the team!” Carina looked up with a small smile.
“Imelda says she’s going to post the roster on the house bulletin board.” Sebastian ruffled his hair. “But since you weren’t there, I’d say I was one of the better flyers.”
“Such confidence.” Carina shook her head. “Did you leave Ominis at the pitch?”
“No, he left after I had my rounds, I just stayed to scope out the competition. Surprised he’s not here honestly, we’ve that potions assignment to finish.” Sebastian looked around the library and shrugged.
“Oh, I finished it already.” Carina waved her hand as she scanned a page in her book.
“Nice!” Sebastian leaned back and stretched. He looked to Poppy and Natty. “Still working on yours?”
“Unfortunately.” Poppy sighed
“Samantha Dale inhaled too much Draught of Living Death in class, she has been in the hospital wing. She has to have Wiggenweld potion 4 times a day according to Nurse Blainey.” Natty shook her head.
“I must say, Sharp brewed a strong potion then.” Carina hummed.
“Wasn’t Larson in your group?” Garreth asked.
“He has been with Samantha in the hospital wing.” Poppy giggled. “I think he feels responsible, he had been teasing her about the smell of her Amortentia.”
“Now that is a riveting subject.” Sebastian leaned forward. “Care to disclose what you ladies smelled?” He shot them an easy grin.
“Only if you are slipping that Veritaserum in my next glass of pumpkin juice.” Carina closed Moste Potente Potions.
“Oh! That’s what the other clear potion was!” Poppy jumped grabbing Natty’s arm. “You knew it wasn’t standard potioning water.” The girls giggled.
Carina giggled as well. She sighed. “Well, my time with this book is done.” Carina frowned as she stood. “I need to return it. I’ll catch up with you guys later.” Carina stood and took the book back to Madam Scribner.
As she left the library she flicked a magic orb. “Where is he?” She found it odd that Ominis had not come to the library.
She followed the orb to the Astronomy tower. It rose flowing up the stairs and dispersed at the Room of Requirement. She hadn’t had time to come back to the room yet. She entered the room to find Deek scrubbing the floor.
“Ah, Miss Carina! Deek is happy to see you!” The elf stood leaving his cleaning brush on the floor.
“How are you Deek?” Carina smiled down at the elf.
“Deek is well. Tobbs is with Master Ominis in the upper vivarium. Deek thinks Tobbs needed help with something.” The elf tapped his cheek.
“Thank you Deek. I suppose all of the plants and beasts have faired well?” Carina shrugged her bag off her shoulder.
“Deek and Tobbs have been hard at work keeping them well.” He puffed his chest with pride.
“That’s wonderful!” Carina sat her bag down and went up to the mountain vivarium. The setting sun of the vivarium cast long shadows. A set of nifflers chased a golden ball at the base of the ruins. Her kneazles napped under the bench on the plateau. Ominis and Tobbs were no where to be seen. She made for the ruins.
“Come now, it is alright.” Ominis spoke softly as she entered the crumbling ruins. The phoenix sat on his perch, leaning into Ominis’ touch. Milky tears pooled in its eyes. Ominis turned his head in her direction, no glow to his eyes. He wasn’t using his ancient magic.
“Oh dear…Tobbs had never known phoenixes could cry so much.” He held up a small vial catching the tears.
“Is everything alright.” Carina asked.
“I came to the vivarium to take my mind off things, I’ve a slight headache, and I might have shooed our dear friend here away too forcefully.” Ominis rubbed the back of his neck. “He has been crying ever since.”
Carina frowned. She stepped forward. “There there, it’s alright.” Carina stroked the birds warm plumage. “Ominis gets grumpy when he doesn’t feel well.” She watched as Ominis’ ears turned pink. The phoenix let out a melodic chirp. The last few tears dropped from his eyes. Carina watched as Tobbs expertly collected them. Carina glanced at the pearly liquid that had collected in the vial. Phoenix tears…they had healing properties… “That’s it!” She exclaimed excitedly. Ominis startled and grasped his forehead.
“Ouch. I’ve a headache, not so loud.” He moaned.
The phoenix crooned and began crying again. Carina gave a startled gasp. “He’s trying to heal you…. Phoenix tears have healing powers.” She took the vial from Tobbs and collected the fresh tears. “Such an intelligent thing you are.” She scratched the bird under his beak. He chirped and launched from his perch, spreading his wings he glided out of the room. “Come on you grumpy thing.” She grabbed Ominis by the hand and lead him back into the room of requirement. She sat him on the plush sofa.
“What are you doing?” Ominis asked with a furrowed brow?
“Fixing your headache.” She conjured a dropper and dipped it into the tears. With careful but sure hands she reached for Ominis’ face. “I’m going to drop a tear in each of your eyes.” She moved closer. She could see the scarred white Star of Ominis’ iris, the barest bit of pale blue blended in. She dropped one drop in each eye.
Ominis blinked and shut his eyes. He pressed his fingertips to his eyelids as if the tears had burned. Carina held her breath. He opened his eyes and blinked. “Ah…my head had been hurting all day.” He sighed in relief.
“Is that the only reason you’ve come to the room? You come here a lot when you’re sulking.” She stoppered the vial of tears. She turned to look for Deek, he must have left the room.
“I suppose I was upset that you were having such a good time in the library with Weasley.” He turned a his head away from her.
“You came to the library…” Carina had not even noticed he was there…to engrossed in her book.
“You were both laughing. I couldn’t bear to stay.” He closed his eyes.
Carinas heart clinched. “He fell out of his chair. You would have laughed too.”
“But why was he with you anyway.” Ominis turned furrowing his brow towards her. “You didn’t want me there.” He sighed.
“Sebastian needed the support for his ego, I already told you. Besides Garreth came to apologize, but not till after he confessed to fancying me.” Ominis clenched his jaw. Carina saw it for what it was, jealousy. She sighed. “He apologized for the inappropriate remarks from last year.” The barest pink tinted the tips of Ominis’ ears.
He leaned forward pinching his brow. “I do not like feeling this way.”
“You’ve nothing to be jealous of.” Carina sat beside him. “Shall I tell you what I smelled in my Amortentia?” She picked at the edge of her sleeve.
“You seemed awfully embarrassed yesterday….” Ominis shifted turning towards her.
She took a deep breath. “I smell wood smoke, from the fireplace in the library at home.” It was stocked with the wood Charles had Ominis chop over the summer. “Freshly brewed coffee….” The same coffee she made when he slept in from being up most of the night. She tucked her hair behind her ear. “And a forest of cedar trees in a rainstorm.” Her face was warm. The tips of her fingers felt cool with the admission. She knew this was as good as any confession.
Ominis reached out with his right hand. He gently cupped her cheek and stroked her beauty mark. He leaned in and whispered, “Me?”
“Who else silly.” She sighed
Chapter Text
Ominis
“You know, I never thought I would see the day…” A low thud sounded through the common room as Sebastian propped his feet up on a low table. “Ominis Gaunt jealous.”
“I don’t know why I even try to confide in you.” Ominis sighed. He sat with a textbook open in his lap, wand hovering over the page. He had been glaring in Garreth’s general direction as Carina ate dinner with Natty and Poppy at the Gryffindor table. The Gryffindor had made himself a part of their friend group much to Ominis’ displeasure.
“Look, the whole thing is hilarious. You are set to court and marry ‘The Malfoy Heiress.’” Sebastian put extra emphasis at the end of his statement. Carina had told them of Garreth’s tea session. “But you’re jealous because Weasley has a crush on her and is hanging around her. I guarantee a proper public snog will chase him away.”
“And out Carina when she would rather her family connections remain hidden.” Ominis sighed. He felt his ears warm at the thought of kissing Carina in public.
“Why exactly?” Sebastian asked.
“I believe it’s called nepotism.” Ominis replied dryly.
“Against her pedigree, is she?” Sebastian scoffed.
Ominis sighed, closing his book. “Can you honestly blame her, given what you know.”
“Can’t say I can.” He heard Sebastian drop his feet to the floor and stand. “Look, mope all you would like, but I’m going to bed, it’s late.” Sebastian yawned.
***
September bled by. Ominis was drowning in homework. He and Sebastian sat in the library during one of their free periods, spending the late morning on their Defense Against the Dark Arts.
“Considering how we faced inferi in the catacomb last year, this assignment should be a breeze.” Ominis glared in Sebastian’s direction. Since recovering from his headache he had not used ancient magic to see.
“I believe you were controlling them, not dispatching them.” Ominis shook his head.
“Personal experience not withstanding, I think we all agree kill it with fire is the appropriate answer.” Sebastian griped. “Why must we write a whole essay?”
“I believe the point is to identify, understand and defend.” Ominis sighed. He heard shuffling steps approaching and tilted his head in their direction.
“Ah, Mister Gaunt, there you are.” Professor Fig called, sounding almost relieved. “If you do not mind, I require your assistance with something.”
“Of course, sir.” Ominis closed his book and put away his parchment into his bag. “Suppose I’ll see you later.” He called to Sebastian as he stood.
“No you won’t.” Sebastian grumbled as he and Professor Fig left the library. Ominis flicked a small orb of magic to float along with them. He prayed it didn’t give him a headache this time.
“I have something I must discuss with Professor Rackham, it would be best if you and Carina are there.” Professor Fig murmured as they entered Central Hall.
“Carina is in Ancient Runes.” Ominis replied.
“I presume you don’t mind accompanying me to retrieve her?” Ominis followed him up the stairs to a creaky wooden landing. “Professor Shacklebolt has taken a daunting task teaching both Arithmacy and Ancient Runes this year. But I hope Professor Otherhaus is enjoying her newborn.” They entered the hallway to the Arithmacy classroom. Professor Fig rapped on the door and cracked it open. “Excuse me, Kora….” Professor Fig stepped into the doorway.
“Ah Eleazar, I see you’ve finally returned from London.” Professor Shaklebolt stood by one of the rooms many chalkboards.
“Yes, yes, I hate to interrupt, but I require Miss Savage.” Professor Fig clasped his hands together.
“Of course, but only because it is you Eleazar.” Professor Shacklbolt turned and waved for Carina to go. “Don’t forget, 36 inches on the differences and similarities of Elder and Younger Futhark.”
“Yes Professor.” Carina sighed, smiling no doubt. Must she always be happy about homework. She followed them back into the hallway. “It is good to see you Professor.” Carina smiled up to Professor Fig. They exited the hallway and descended the stairs to Central Hall.
“Apologies for interrupting what was surely an enlightening lesson.” Professor Fig sighed. “I hope you will not struggle with your assignment.”
“Oh, it is quite alright.” Carina gave a small sigh. Ominis caught her slight smile in his periphery.
“You’ve already finished it haven’t you…” Ominis smirked as they made their way through the Transfiguration courtyard.
“I wrote it during lecture.” Carina giggled, she shoved him. “How did you guess?”
Ominis shook his head. “The air of smugness.”
“I do hope you were paying attention.” Professor Fig watched them with a raised brow. Most likely surprised at their familiarity.
“I was also taking notes.” Carina gave an easy smile. Ominis shook his head. She was such a Ravenclaw at heart.
They continued down through the bell tower wing. Thankfully they encountered no one past the Muggle Studies classroom. They were greeted by Professor Rackham as they entered the Map Chamber. “Greetings my young friends, and you Professor Fig.”
“We have much to discuss.” Professor Fig began. “Especially since in a few weeks these two will be of age.”
“Ah yes.” Ominis tilted his head towards Professor Rackham’s voice. “Since the two of you have come this far, you both possess an extraordinary magical ability. The potential and power of which will, unlock should you prove yourself worthy?” Ominis watched Carina pick at the sleeve of her robes in his periphery. Professor Rackham continued on.
“The location of each of four trials will, in time, appear on the map.” Four? One for each frame surely…Ominis furrowed his brow in thought. “Trials that will test you and give you access to invaluable knowledge. Trials that the two of you will complete together, but without Professor Fig. Do you recall the pensieve memory you viewed in my vault in Gringotts?” He was now speaking to Carina.
“You and your friend Charles spoke of the Portkey, and of trials you’d created for one who could see traces of ancient magic.” It felt so long ago that Carina had told him of that memory.
“Precisely.” Profess Rackham replied. “Charles is another of the keepers, a designation I’m sure you remember that we gave ourselves centuries ago in the light of the knowledge that we have been bound to keep hidden. Until, perhaps, now.”
“So, everything until now has not been a trail.” Ominis mused aloud.
“No, but the fact that the two of you have come this far, however, bodes well. The trials were designed to ensure that the power and knowledge we have kept secret for so long does not fall into the wrong hands. They will test your abilities, both innate and learned. But of equal importance, everything you witness as you complete the trials will inform what you choose to do with all that we share. You will need patience. The trials have much to teach you. It will take time.” Professor Rackham spoke calmly.
“I am afraid that we do not have the luxury of time.” Professor Fig stepped forward with his hands clasped infront of him.
“We have waited this long Professor Fig. Surely a few more weeks…” Professor Rackham spoke decisively.
“Respectfully sir, though I do not know the secret you keep. I do know that our young friends here have seen traces of a particularly powerful Dark Magic being welded by goblinkind. And last year we encountered an uncommonly powerful goblin wielding such magic as we prepared to leave your vault at Gringotts. My sources say that the goblins have been on the move. There has been an increase in their presence and numbers in the valley since last we met. We already may be too late.”
“This is grave news indeed. My young friends, do you trust Professor Fig?” Professor Rackham asked them directly.
“We do.” Carina and Ominis replied at the same time. Ominis watched Fig sigh in relief.
Professor Rackham gave a heavy sigh. “Then in light of your considerable skill and all you have already accomplished we shall begin. You will find the location of the first trial marked on the map below you.” Ominis sighed. “Whilst Professor Fig may assist you in locating the trial, they may be completed by only one of our ability.”
Fig turned to them. “Shall we have a look?” He asked. He and Carina took a few steps to the side. Ominis followed. “I know that tower. It’s not far.” He looked to Carina. “You may have seen it yourself.”
Carina sighed as she smiled. “I believe I have, it’s north of Hogsmeade and just a ways from Upper Hogsfield.”
“Good.” Fig sighed. “As your mentor, the least I can do is go ahead and make sure it is safe. Join me as soon as you can.”
“You wish for us to go now? We have History of Magic this afternoon.” Ominis asked.
“It will be fine Ominis. Professor Binns won’t even notice we aren’t there.” Carina looked to him with a grin. “Besides, I’ll get notes from Amit. So we won’t miss anything.”
“I’m just surprised you are willing to skip class.” Ominis rubbed the back of his neck. He had been looking forward to a nap.
Carina turned to Professor Fig. “We will meet you at the tower as soon as we prepare, shouldn’t take us too long.”
“Until then, be careful. And do not tell anyone where you are going.” Professor Fig turned and briskly left the chamber ahead of them.
“To the room, quickly.” Carina grabbed Ominis by the hand and pulled him up to the Room of Requirement. The room was empty upon entering. Carina let go of his hand and began shrugging off her school robes. She made for her room. “Get changed.” She called over her shoulder as her door closed. Ominis sighed and trudged to his own room.

“Over here.” Fig called as Carina and Ominis descended, Carina lightly halting her broomstick. Ominis eased himself off the back. They had opted to fly from the Astronomy Tower. Ominis prayed that they weren’t seen. He had enjoyed the long flight, mainly because he was able to hold Carina close. He had ensured that he cast his ancient magic so that it was once again localized to his eyes.
“We are not alone.” Carina looked towards the tower and ruined courtyard.
Professor Fig sighed. “We are not. Ranrock’s Loyalists. Around a dozen I can see, but could be more.” Ominis watched as Carina worried her bottom lip with her teeth. The strangest urge nibble on her lip as well coursed through him. He swallowed hard. It was not the time for such things.
Carina none the wiser to his inner turmoil asked, “Can’t we apparate past them into the tower?” Her brow was bowed in worry.
Professor Fig rubbed his jaw. “We could, but we’ve no idea what’s in the tower. More importantly, however, I’d like to know why they are here. They’ve set up camp just ahead. I suggest we investigate a little before doing anything else. Let’s go.” Professor Fig turned and made for the path leading up to the tower ruins.
Carina sighed and looked up at Ominis. “Well, this isn’t ideal.” She quickly followed Professor Fig. Ominis was not far behind her.
“No, it isn’t. This way.” Professor Fig called over his shoulder as they reached a small bridge. “And I’d suggest we use the disillusionment charm here. No sense in announcing our arrival. Quickly now.” Without hesitation they cast their charms.
They quickly made their way up the steps leading to the tower courtyard and goblin encampment. Carina stepped ahead of Professor Fig, disillusionment charm not enough to escape the coating of Ominis’ ancient magic film. “Stay hidden.” He heard Fig whisper. It seemed their Professor was none the wiser on Carina’s experience sneaking undetected.
The goblin standing sentinel at the entry to the encampment stood no chance. With a silent cast he was petrified. Ominis watched as Carina quickly made her way inside and snuck behind the next goblin, he too was silently brought down. Ominis and Professor Fig slowly crept into the encampment. A set of goblins chatted far to the left as Carina circled right.
“I don’t see myself doing this sort of thing forever though. Fancy I’ll have my own operation worked out one day. People working for me.” Carina snuck behind the next goblin warrior. He dropped petrified.
A Loyalist warrior came out of a tent. “There must be something here. Ranrock said so.” The goblin hit the ground with a low thud.
Another goblin appeared. “Is someone there?” He walked over to the low wall Carina was hidden behind, and he too dropped like a fly.
Ominis watched as she moved to the two goblins near the far left tent. With a single cast they too were petrified.
“Well done!” called Professor Fig.
Lifting their disillusionment they began searching the area. Carina entered the tent. “Look at this!” Carina called. Ominis entered the tent and held his wand to the parchment she held out.
Search the tower and the surrounding area. Look for anything to do with the names. What you find here could be the key to goblinkind finally taking its rightful place in the world
Ranrock.
“Orders directly from Ranrock.” Ominous exclaimed in surprise.
Professor Fig stood to the side. “These orders indicate that they are after something to do with the names… what names? And why here?”
As they exited the tent, several goblins made their appearance from the surrounding encampment.
A loyalist assassin drew his dagger. “I will draw blood.” A loyalist warrior brandished his ax. “This is where you will fall.” A crash of ancient magic lightning landed on the warrior. Carina then turned to the assassin and cried; “ Expelliarmus .” His dagger went flying and with a burst of ancient magic, she threw a barrel into him. Carina turned to the next goblin assassin with a pulse of magic she disintegrated him. Ominis used his own magic to throw a barrel at the goblins coming his way. A sentinel seeking to slice him with his sword was picked up and slammed with his ancient magic. Professor Fig stood off to the side unleashing his own barrage of spells against the goblins. As Carina transfigured the last goblin into a chicken, the encampment stilled, they were surrounded by downed goblins.
“Goblins have always been antagonist against wizard kind… but this is different somehow.” Professor Fig crouched looking at an unconscious goblin.
Carina huffed, frustrated. “I can’t imagine that the goblins know about the trials.” She stepped toward an unconscious goblin and toed it with her boot.
“They know that something is significant about this place though.” Ominis stated as he scanned the area, just in case.
“How on earth could they have known about this place?” Professor Fig looked around in confusion.
“It’s more than a coincidence that we encountered Ranrock’s loyalist here.” Carina replied
Fig made his way to the base of the tower. “Looks like we’ve found the entrance.”
Carina stepped forward, attempting to push open the door. “It’s locked.”
Ominous stood beside her. “ Alohomora.”
They entered the tower slowly. A circular room greeted them a statue in the middle. Enchanted brooms swept the floor as my rats skittered from their intrusion.
“Now, let’s have a look around.” Fig hummed. They searched the room and made their way upstairs.
Once at the upper most landing Ominis heard Professor Rackham. “Welcome to San Bakar’s Tower.”
Carina sighed, “Hello Professor. Did you say San Bakar’s tower?”
Professor Rackham replied “I did, Professor Bakar is a keeper you have yet to encounter. I’m glad to see that I was correct in presuming we would meet again soon after our last encounter. Though I surmise, based on the commotion, I heard, that you did not have an easy time getting to me.”
“We did not, Professor.” Carina sighed.
“We encountered goblins outside the tower.” Ominis added.
“That goblins were aware of my vault is disquieting enough. But if they have also made a connection to this tower and the threat may be greater, than I thought.” Professor Rackham paused. “All the more reason for us to move forward. Downstairs near the entry, a reservoir of ancient magic, like those the two of you have seen before, has been unlocked. Command it to access a doorway. I’m afraid I cannot say more. As Professor Fig cannot join the two of you, he and I, in time, will see you back at the Map Chamber. Remember what you see and hear.”
Professor Fig turned towards them. “We are going to need to understand how Ranrock’s Loyalists knew about a tower that once belong to a keeper. For the moment, however, the two of you have more important things to set your mind too. A reservoir of ancient magic, I believe?” Professor stood tapping his chin in thought.
“Yes, sir.” Ominis replied.
“Then I shall leave matters and your increasingly capable hands. That said, be careful.” Fig implored.
“We will, sir.” Carina reached out and gave Professor Fig a quick hug. “We will see you back in the Map Chamber.” As she let go, Fig smiled and turned on the spot, disapparating, leaving them in the tower alone. “A reservoir of ancient magic, downstairs, near the entry.” Carina turned to Ominis.
“Suppose we need to go back downstairs.” Ominis rubbed the back of his neck. He felt wholly unprepared for what ever lay ahead.
“This place seems to have been abandoned for quite some time. I wonder how long the enchantment on those brooms will last.” Carina perused several bookshelves on the way down, investigating every nook and cranny. “Someone was an avid reader it seems, can’t say I’m familiar with some of these titles though.” Carina peered at each bookshelf with keen interest.
“Look just there, you can see it bubbling up from the floor.” Carina called as they reached the ground floor. She ran over to the other side of the room. Ominis followed. He watched as Carina twirled her wand, casting it upward activating the reservoir bubbling from the floor. An arched doorway appeared where a solid wall once stood. “Let’s go.” They entered a corridor, turned the corner and were met with a table full of books. “Look at all these books! I wonder why they are on this side of the archway?”
Ominis watch as Carina picked through the books. A feeling of warmth spread through his chest. Surely he was just happy to be here with her…right. He rubbed his chest and walked over. “Anything interesting?”
She turned and looked up at him beaming. “I’m definitely taking some of these. So much useful knowledge.” Ominis watched as she worked her wand around the seam of her bag, adding another extension charm no doubt. She took several books. “Ok, let’s go.”
They descended the stairs and stood before a large double door. There was a glow of ancient magic on the swirling symbol carved into handle.
“It’s like the door in Professor Rackham’s vault.” Carina tilted her head. Ominis touched the handle and the door opened. They stepped into a cavernous chamber. “I’ve seen this before… inside Gringotts and in the Restricted Section.” Carina spun around taking in all of the details Ominis was sure his film lacked.
“Where are we?” He asked.
“I have no idea.” Carina sighed.
They made their way down the corridor to an archway that led to nowhere. “I suppose we need to look around.” Carina’s brows furrowed as she scanned the room. Ominis lifted his brows with skepticism. “Don’t look at me like that.” Carina huffed at him. She began looking around in earnest and found a set of stairs. She went down the stairs as Ominis examined the archway. “There is another reservoir.” Carina called up to him. There was a tremor from the archway.
“Impressive.” Ominis remarked as the arch way before him shifted.
Carina returned upstairs. “It seems we’ll be going through lots of arches.”
They stepped through and found another corridor that led them to a pathway with moving blocks. Ominis stumbled. “I rather loathe these moving paths, why make them at all.”
“Perhaps they are for dramatic effect.” Carina giggled. They entered a round chamber with an archway in the middle. “Whomever built these chambers added much grandeur.” They moved forward through the room looking for more traces of ancient magic.
Ominis made his way to bubbling he could see on the floor across the room. He turned to Carina. “There’s a reservoir just here.” Carina followed him and activated it. They turned and looked through the archway. Their next path just beyond.
“We would have no chance of moving forward without the control of ancient magic, that is for certain.” Carina sighed as they walked through the arch making their way down an angled hallway. At the end they entered a grand chamber full of statues on pedestals. A mixture of pensieve sentries and protectors.
“Oh no, not these again.” Carina moaned.
A large penseive protector kneeled further in the chamber.
“What is it?” Ominis squinted down the chamber. His eyes widened at the sight of the statues.
“I hope we don’t have to fight all of them. They are never a welcome site” Carina stretched, attempting to ready herself for the upcoming fight.
“At least I know what to expect this time.” Ominis sighed
“Together?” Carina asked.
“Always.” Ominis smiled at her. He felt the warmth in his chest return.
“Let’s go!” Carina strode forward. Her movements causing two pensieve sentinels to drop from the ceiling. The kneeling pensieve protector stood. Carina fired a silent bombarda at it.
“ Accio !” Ominis called, pulling one of the sentinels close to him. “ Diffindo. ” He sliced its torso forcing it to fall back. He hit it with a chunk of rubble using an ancient magic cast. It began to disintegrate. The second sentinel came forward. “ Expelliarmus!” Its axe flew into the air and with his ancient magic throw he crashed it into the sentinel. He watched as the Pensieve protector was brought down by Carina crashing down her ancient magic lightning.
“Well, that wasn’t too bad.” She called.
Ominis sighed. “What have the keepers got planned for us?” Carina shrugged.
They moved onto the next room and were met with floating platforms. “These look familiar.” Carina pulled the platform to them. They climbed on to the platform together causing the platform to wobble. Carina grabbed Ominis as she steadied herself, he flushed at her closeness. She looked around the room. “ Accio !” She pulled them forward.
“You do love a good puzzle don’t you.” Ominis chuckled.
Carina giggled and sighed. “I don’t see anything that could indicate a magic reservoir.” Carina scanned the room.
Ominis glanced around. Everything was coated in his magic. “I have an idea. I’m going to dispelled my sight.” With a wave, everything was dark once again. He scanned the darkness. A slight bubbling to their right was barely noticeable. “There, across the room, there is a light bubbling on the floor.” He pointed towards it. Carina pulled the platform and stepped off to activate the reservoir as Ominis reactivated the ancient magic to his eyes.
Carina looked on both sides of the archway. “Hmmm. I see.” She returned to the platform and pulled them around the arch where they stepped off and continued through a passage.
They entered a room where two statues of Pensieve protectors reanimated. At the first step, the first protector was exploded with the burst of Carina‘s ancient magic.
Ominis aimed at the second protector. “ Expelliarmus !” Using his ancient magic he beheaded it with its own disarmed sword. “Not making this easy on us.” Ominis groaned as they made their way down a set of stairs. Another platform greeted them at the bottom of the stairs along with an archway towards the rooms center.
“I’m beginning to detect a theme.” Ominis crossed his arms as he glared up at the floating platform.
“All of this is just so intriguing.” Carina hummed happily. “Now, where is that reservoir?” Carina asked looking around
Ominis once again dispelled his sight. A bubbling glow caught his attention. “It’s there.” He pointed to a space that appeared to be floating mid air as he renewed his sight. He watched Carina climb a set of stairs, he followed. She pulled the platform forward and stepped forward to activate the reservoir.
“Suppose we need to go back down to see what’s different.” Carina mused. They descended the stairs and made for the archway. Once passing through the bridge disappeared. “Hmmm…well that’s interesting.” Carina ran back up the stairs “ Accio .” Ominis watched as she pulled the platform to her and climbed on top. “Maybe if we pull it past where the bridge is, we can use it to pull ourselves across after going back through.” She called down to him. Hopping down from the platform again they went back through the archway together.
Ominis spied the soft smile on Carina’s face. “Only you. You are enjoying this far too much.” Ominis fought a grin as they climbed the stairs once again. He supposed if it made her happy, he would do any puzzle with her.
“Oh hush. I’m just happy I get to spend time with you doing this.” Carina tucked a stray hair behind her ear. The admission made Ominis grin harder. They climbed the top the platform again, and Carina pulled them across the room. As they climbed off the platform they entered a corridor with another moving floor. Carina giggled as Ominis stumbled. “Only you can look so graceful when stumbling.” She stood on her tiptoes and kissed his cheek.
Ominis felt his neck heat. “Still enjoying my discomfort I see.” He reached forward and tugged her braided hair playfully. “Let’s keep going.” They entered a circular chamber with Sentry statues and a twisting pillar. All six statues reanimated.
“Just lovely.” Carina moaned.
Ominis pointed his wand at the first protector. “Confringo!” “ Expelliarmus!” He sent its mace into the air and with an ancient magic throw, crashed it into the protector’s crumbling form. Carina crashed a sentry into a pensieve protector with an ancient magic cast. They both crumbled into magical dust. The next protector launched himself into the air. The echo of its magic reflecting on the floor where Carina stood fighting a sentry.
“Depulso!” Ominis launched Carina out of the way, she skidded into the wall with a low thud. He brought down crash of magic lightning. He watched as Carina stood.
“Ouch.” She used her magic to throw a relic crumbling another sentry.
The last protector approached Ominis. “ Bombarda Maxima.” It exploded in a shower of magic dust.
“I suppose I should say thanks. Not how I would want to end up against the wall mind.” Carina rubbed her shoulder.
Ominis was dumbstruck for the barest moment, he flushed, shaking his head he asked, “Are you hurt?” He reached out, brushing her cheek with his thumb, creating circles around her beauty mark. Surely she had to have hit her head, talking in such a way.
“I am more than all right” Carina gave a breathy sigh.
“Alright.” Ominis leaned in and kissed her forehead…just in case. “Let’s keep moving.”
They descended stairs to another magic reservoir that Carina activated without much preamble. “The keepers sure love platforms don’t they? Accio .”Carina and Ominis stepped onto the platform. Carina pulled them across what appeared to be a great pit with an archway in the middle. Through the archway they found another platform.
“It’s like they want us to fall to our death.” Ominis muttered as he carefully stepped through the archway after Carina.
“Suppose we’ll have to be careful. Accio .” Carina pull the platform to the entrance of another corridor. A curved double staircase awaited them at the end. They raced up the stairs to a set of double doors.
“Do you think the door leads to the map chamber?” Ominis leveled a glare at the door.
“I doubt it.” Carina huffed opening the door. It led to another empty chamber. “This chamber looks like the one in the restricted section, though there’s no pensieve in the middle.”
“There’s another door, let’s go.” Ominis was anxious to get back. They entered a large open chamber. As they stepped forward a walkway appeared with moving bricks. “I still loathe these.” Ominis sighed as they walked to a central platform, towering pillars reached towards the ceiling. As they stepped upon the platform two pensieve protectors dropped from the ceiling. “ Depulso !” Ominis cried. Both protectors were launched from the platform and into a far wall. They crumbled as they fell.
“Well, that’s one way to do it.” Carina laughed.
The platform rumbled as they approached the center. An eruption of molten magic just before them had them staggering back. From the bubbling of magic an enormous Pensieve Guardian appeared. Ominis watched as its cape billowed with dark ancient magic. With a great stomp a shockwave of ancient magic struck them slinging them back.
Carina scrambled to her feet and began unleashing a barrage of silent spells. Ominis spied a ruined pillar and threw a great chunk of it with a magic cast. The Guardian turned towards him and stomped sending a straight shock of magic towards him, he rolled to doge out of the way. The guardian out stretched its hands forming a great glowing orb. It launched it towards Carina who blocked its assault with a perfect portego but was still pushed back. The guardian stomped again shooting a shock of magic at Ominis, he rolled again to dodge but was struck by an aerial blast. He felt a sharp bit of rubble graze his cheek. The guardian drew up another orb that Carina fired a silent Bombarda at the same time Ominis brought down an impressive bolt of lightning with a crash. The guardian collapsed to its knees and disintegrated into a molten pool of ancient magic. The platform rumbled as a bridge appeared leading to another door.
“We did it!” Carina squealed. She flung herself into Ominis wrapping her arms around his neck. He staggered slipping on a chunk of debris. They landed with a thud. Carina’s light weight resting on top of him.
“Survived all of that just to be taken out by the most dangerous thing here.” Ominis snaked his arms down Carina’s waist and pulled her close. With her hands on his chest she looked down at him with an easy smile.
“Ah yes, the misadventures of slipping on rubble.” She giggled against his chest. Her warmth seeped deep beneath his skin. She leaned forward lifting a hand and smoothed his hair back into place.
“And here I thought you liked my hair out of place.” Ominis hummed at the scrape of her nails against his scalp. He closed his eyes to the gentle assault.
“Almost as much as I enjoy playing in it.” Carina sighed as she continued running her fingers through his hair. Carina sat up straddling his lap with a happy sigh. She planted her hands on his chest.
Ominis cracked his eyes to glance up at her. Carina shifted on his lap as she looked at him, but quickly looked away. His focus was stolen as she looked back biting her lip. Ominis groaned. He grabbed her by the wrist pulling her to him. He cupped her face pulling her in and trapped her lips with his. She gasped as he nibbled her lip. His other hand slid from her waist and grasped her thigh.
“Ominis….” Carina moaned against his lips.
Ominis pulled away just enough to ask, “Do you want me to stop?” His heart was threatening to break between his ribs with each beat, and the tightness in his trousers was bound to be noticeable at this point. He rubbed his nose against Carina’s, enjoying the feel of her breath on his lips.
“Never.” Carina sighed and leaned back in, the softness of her lips ghosting across his. Ominis groaned as she nipped at his lips before devouring them with hers. With ease he gripped the back of her head and rolled them till she was caged beneath him. She squealed from shock or excitement, Ominis couldn’t care which. He lost himself in a sea of petal soft lips and the barest brushes of tongue. So sweet. She tasted so sweet.
Ominis broke their kiss to graze kisses along the length of Carina’s jaw. Her intake of breath egging him on. Her fingers found their way back into his hair. He moaned at the light bite of her nails. He continued his assault of kisses to her neck. Her skin smooth and warm beneath his attentions. Carina shivered beneath each caress. Her thighs squeezed his hips, making him painfully aware of their situation. Ominis ceased his exploration, placing his forehead at the crook of her neck. Was someone truly supposed to smell so sweet…to taste this good…he took a deep breath. “You’ll be the death of me.” He pulled away to stare down at Carina. He could feel the heat radiating from her cheeks.
“And you’ll be my ruin.” Carina softly gasped. The thought gave Ominis pause. That wouldn’t do. At least not now…not yet.
He sighed and pushed him self up. He stood and held out his hand for Carina. “Come on, before we forget why we are here.” She grabbed his hand and dusted herself off. She reached up and smoothed his hair back into place.
“There.” She gave a shy smile. She dropped her hands and fidgeted with her sleeve. Ominis reached out and tugged her braid.
He gave her his own shy smile. “Let’s go.” He grabbed her hand and pulled her towards the bridge that had appeared.
“I pray that we don’t have to fight anything else.” Carina murmured beside him. They stepped onto the bridge and the blocks undulated.
Ominis took leery steps forward. “Why must these bricks always move.” They made their way through the doorway and entered a grand chamber.
Carina gasped. “Look at this statue. It looks like Professor Rackham.”
Ominis stared up at the bearded statue. He lifted his brow as he looked to Carina. “I’ll take your word for it.” They stepped forward, toward a pedestal beneath the statue.
“Look, a pensieve.” Carina pointed at the pedestal.
As they approached a shimmering drop almost like a tear fell into the pensieve.
“Another memory.” Carina stated.
The surface of the pensieve swirled with magic an object floated suspended above the surface. “Appears to be an artifact of some kind.” Carina inspected it and placed it in her bag.
They both approached the penseive.
“Shall we?” Ominis gestured to the liquid surface of the pensieve. He was intrigued by what he could possibly get to see. Carina nodded. They dipped their heads into the pensieve.
Light bloomed and swirled as Ominis descended. He found himself by a cliff side. Two figures stood facing an outcrop with small pillars. The older man watched as a young witch swirled her wand with grace creating swirling pillars, not unsilimar to the pillars Ominis and Carina practiced making over the summer.
“Your ability to transfigure the world around you is remarkable.” Ominis was finally able to put a face with Professor Rackham’s voice. That meant that the girl was…what did Carina call her? Isadora? She smiled waving her wand and creating another pillar. Her smiling face fell as she furrowed her brow. “What is it?” Professor Rackham asked.
Isadora sighed. “My father isn’t getting better. I don’t think he’ll ever recover from the death of my brother.” She looked to Professor Rackham and then looked away.
“It is agonising to see those we love suffer.” Professor Rackham kept a solemn expression as he spoke.
“The drought was years ago, but the pain of losing him is as deep for him now as if it had happened only yesterday.” Her eyes shined with unshed tears. “He doesn’t need pretty pillars. He needs peace.” She said turning back to Professor Rackham. “What if I could help him, Professor?”
“You do so much for your father already.” Professor Rackham exclaimed. “You-“
“It’s not enough! I want to take away his pain.” She cried. He felt as if he were listening to Sebastian about Anne.
Professor Rackham’s eyes widened. “It is tempting, I know, to use this magic to transfigure more than the physical world.” Ominis furrowed his brow, he and Carina already did that to give him a form of pseudo-sight. “But, human emotion is a potent force unto itself. Even the most well meaning and competent witch cannot possibly know the consequences of irrevocably manipulating it.” Perhaps that explained his headaches…
“So I’m to watch as my father’s pain destroys him?” Ominis felt from her an inkling of the distress Sebastian held in regard to Anne’s pain and her curse.
Professor Rackham’s expression softened. “It is not your pain to take.”
Isadora’s pained expression smoothed. She turned and walked away.
The memory morphed to Professor Rackham standing near a fireplace talking to another man. “Every year students see something sillier than I could ever imagine in their tea leaves.” The other man let out a chuckle. They turned as a woman entered the room. “Ah, Miss Morganach. Welcome back to Hogwarts, Professor.” It seemed that Isadora grew up and ended up returning to Hogwarts.
She smiled. “That’s going to take some getting used to.” She inclined her head. “Professor Rackham, Professor Rookwood.” She nodded in greeting.
“I was so pleased to hear that you accepted the position of Defense Against the Dark Arts Professor.” Professor Rookwood smiled at her.
Professor Rackham stepped away from the fireplace. “Sit, sit, Isadora. Tell us about your travels.”
“I was actually hoping that you and the others might join me at my home this evening.” She looked between them and excitedly replied, “There’s much I’d like to share with you.”
“That would be delightful!” Professor Rackham replied happily. “We shall let the others know.”
“Very well, I shall see you then.” Isadora smiled and turned to leave.
Ominis gasped as he and Carina resurfaced from the pensieve. He rubbed his eyes. It was disorienting bursting from a memory back to the present.
“Sebastian was right…” Carina hummed. Ominis listened as he held his hand to his eyes. “She was a Hogwarts Professor.” He heard Carina tapping her foot on the stone floor. “I did not realize that we may be using our magic in a way that the Keepers may frown upon, though it is not a permanent manipulation.” She mused. “Are you alright?”
“It is just a shock bursting from the sight of the memory to nothing.” Ominis blinked his eyes to the continued darkness. An orb of magic appeared in his vision as Carina held her wand aloft.
“You could see the memory… without your magic?” She asked, lips parted, brows furrowed.
“Yes… just like I saw your memory last year… With everything going on, I guess I forgot to mention it.” Ominis rubbed the back of his neck.
Carina crossed her arms, her brow furrowed even more. She worried her lip with her teeth. Ominis watched her lip, now was not the time. “But how…is it the magic of the pensieve…” Carina diverted his attention as she walked over and inspected the vessel. She turned back to him and sighed. “Suppose that’s a puzzle for another time.”
Ominis reached for her grasping her hand and pulling her into his arms. He smiled down at her. He did enjoy how she loved a good puzzle. His chest warmed. “It is enough for me to know what you truly look like. I know I’ve not much to go by, but I do not even need sight to know that you are the most stunning thing in any room.” He leaned down and captured her lips in his for the briefest of kisses.
“Now who’s the most dangerous one in the room?” Carina murmured breathlessly. She gave a small smile as she covered her lips either her fingers.
“Debatable.” Ominis smirked down at her. He sighed. “We need to find a way out of here.” He and Carina scanned the room. Her magic orb floated above them.
“Just there, more crystallized stone, looks like the glass from Feldcroft and the Restricted section, that must be the way back to the Map Chamber.” Carina grabbed his hand and pulled him to the wall. With a reassuring smile she stepped with him through the glass.
As they entered the Map Chamber, Professor Fig let out a weighted sigh and smiled.
A familiar voice greeted them. “What have we here?”
“Oh!” Carina exclaimed. “We are students from Hogwarts, Sir and this is Professor Fig.”
“Professor Charles Rookwood at your service. Has someone completed the first trial?” The man from the last memory had filled another frame it seemed.
“We have Professor Rookwood.” Ominis gesture to Carina and himself.
“You were in the pensieve in Gringotts with Professor Rackham.“ Carina cut in.
“Indeed. So you found the portkey to access Professor Rackham’s vault and you deciphered the map within the locket you found floating above the pensieve?” He questioned Carina
Ominis chuckled. “Carina enjoys a good puzzle.”
“Oh hush.” She shoved him. “I did Professor” she had turned back to the portraits. “We found something that I can not identify above the last pensieve.” She held out the artifact in question.
“Ah, yes. You will find a similar artifact in each trial. You must take care to keep them safe. You will need them to complete the journey we have set forth for you. Once you have them all, we will tell you what to do with them.” Professor Rookwood informed them.
“Very well. Are you able to tell us anything about the next trial?” Carina asked.
“Before you proceed, I would like to speak with Charles regarding the urgent situation with the goblins.” Professor Rackham interjected
“The goblins?” Professor Rookwood asked in confusion.
“Yes. Carina and Ominis have seen traces of a powerful Dark Magic being wielded by goblin kind. They and their mentor Professor Fig, not only encountered goblins lurking outside of San Bakars tower, but Carina and Professor Fig also encountered a powerful goblin in my vault at Gringotts.”
“I’m afraid it would be wise to halt the trials until we know more.” Professor Rookwood sounded concerned.
“We shall defer to you in this matter, of course.” Professor Fig nodded to the portraits. He turned to Ominis and Carina. “Now then…”
“Wait Professor…” Carina whispered. “The name..’Rookwood.’ Do you think…”
“That there is a connection to Victor? Perhaps, but we can’t be sure of its significance - if any. For now, tell me what you saw in the pensieve.” Professor Fig clasped his hands together.
“The witch from the last pensieve, Isadora, became a Hogwarts Professor. But before that she argued with Professor Rackham about using magic to remove pain.” Carina whispered quickly.
Professor Fig looked thoughtful. “Hmm. Hopefully the next pensieve provides more context. For now, we should learn what Ranrock knows. I will be honest. I’ve no idea where to start.”
“Actually, I might know of someone.” Carina tapped her chin with her finger. “I saw Sirona at the Three Broomsticks speaking to a goblin once. They seemed friendly.”
“Well, it’s worth a try. See what you can find out. Of course, don’t forget…” Professor Fig began.
“Our studies. Yes sir.” Carina sighed with a smile.
Chapter Text
Carina
“I can’t thank you enough for your help, Amit.” Carina walked with the Ravenclaw to the Ravenclaw tower stairwell. “It’s hard enough to stay awake in History of Magic, much less take detailed notes.”
“No need for thanks. I look forward to seeing this new astronomy table.” Amit smiled back at her.
“If that’s the case there is another one in the forbidden forest I can take you to in exchange for a copy of the notes from Ancient Runes.”
“It’s a deal!” He paused to dig through his bag. He produced his notes and seamlessly made a copy.
“You are the best Amit.” Carina sighed. “So, I’ll see you later tonight to show you these tables?”
“Absolutely.” Amit nodded. Carina left him to head to the library.
Across the library tucked in a corner Natty and Poppy sat with Garreth. Heads leaned over their work.
“Well, don’t we look studious.” Carina hummed as she sat down her bag. Plopping into her chair she pulled out one of the books she took from San Bakar’s tower. Flora et Fungi Antiqui.
“Just put us out of our misery already.” Garreth groaned.
“I’m not suffering.” Poppy tilted her head, her Care of Magical Creatures book and notes spread before her.
“I can not say the same.” Natty sighed. “Ancient Runes gives me a headache.”
“Speaking of Ancient Runes.” Carina reached into her bag and pulled out Amit’s notes. “I have, fresh from the duplication charm, a genuine copy of Amit Thakar’s notes.” Carina grinned as she copied her copy and passed it to Natty.
“Why can’t you share your notes on Defense Against the Dark Arts then.” Sebastian came around the corner with Ominis. His magic orb floating just above his head.
Carina sighed as Sebastian sat beside Garreth. “Because, you of all people should be an expert on inferi at this point.”
“He learned nothing last year.” Ominis took the seat beside her. He held out his hand expectantly. She cut her eyes at him and smacked his hand. He furrowed his brow as he huffed. Carina sighed as she pulled Amit’s History of Magic notes from her bag and duplicated them. “Say please.”
“No. It’s entirely your fault that we missed History of Magic to begin with.” Carina almost missed the curl at the corner of his mouth.
“But Professor Fig needed our help, if anyone is at fault, it’s him.” Carina grumbled.
“Sure, blame your favorite teacher.” Ominis chided. He was teasing her. She felt her cheeks heat in indignation.
“You always get my notes. Go get your own.” She huffed.
“I am, it’s your fault for enabling me.” Ominis spoke, his expression infuriatingly neutral.
“And what will you give me in return?” Carina asked raising a brow in question. The corner of his mouth twitched ever so slightly.
“An endless array of sarcastic banter.” He quipped back. Carina sighed. She crossed her arms holding the notes in her hand. “Oh fine.” Ominis huffed rolling is eyes. He quirked a small smile looking directly at her. “Please?” He asked softly, pleading. Carina was not prepared for Ominis’ change in tone. Coupled with the look on his face, her pulse quicken. She dropped the notes in his hand. Her cheeks hot.
“What in the blazes did I just watch?” Garreth asked dumbfounded.
“Manipulation 101.” Sebastian chuckled.
“Yes that is good, but will someone please help me with Ancient Runes.” Natty sat with her head in her hands.
“Of course Natty.” Carina smiled at her friend. She was happy to focus on anything but the boy who was being far more familiar in the company of others.
They sat working on their assignments for most of the afternoon. Carina poured over her book on ancient fungi and plants. She was most intrigued on a section about what she believed detailed a type of moss.
“Sebastian, how is your Latin?” She asked as she spied him scribbling away at his parchment.
“I read it better than I speak it, why do you ask?” He looked up from his work.
She turned her book to him and pointed to the passage she was reading. “What does this say, I must admit I’ve read it three different ways.”
He peered over at the page and raised his brow as he read. “Blessed by the blood of unicorns, no holier lichen exists. Only harvestable during a full moon, sanctified moss holds an array of healing properties, blessed by the travail.” Sebastian looked up at her with confusion. “Where in Merlin’s name did you get that book?”
“Doing field research with Professor Fig.” Carina tapped her lips with her finger. She turned the book back around and stared at the page, she hadn’t imagined what she read. “Unicorns blood…that’s a good way to get cursed…” Carina sighed. To kill a unicorn and spill its blood, no greater crime existed. She wondered if there was a way not to. She returned to her book.
“Still working on your research project I take it.” Poppy asked.
“Yes, it’s proving nigh impossible.” Carina leaned back staring at the ceiling. Travail…effort? Or labor? “Poppy, do the unicorns have a grove in the forest?” She asked offhandedly.
“Well, yes, it’s near this stream, it practically glows at night.” Poppy sighed. “They keep their foals there.”
“Foals…” Carina sat up. “Do they give birth there?” She asked.
“I would think so….” Poppy scrunched her brow.
“Can you show me where it is?”
“I can….but why?” Poppy asked incredulously.
“To look for moss.” Carina replied happily.
“I am glad you have worked out your problem.” Natty sighed. “But I can not tell the difference in these two.” She pointed to two runes that were almost indiscernible from one another.
“Well this one is just barely longer and thinner, but this one is shorter and thicker.” Carina pointed to the page, her finger tracing the differences.
Sebastian let out a snort. “Are we an expert on such matters?” Her cheeks heated at his insinuation.
Carina looked up shaking her head. “Of course you would associate that with phallic humor. I’m not talking about a man’s wit”
“Wit” Garreth asked as he set down his quill.
“It’s muggle slang for a mans…well…” Carina cleared her throat. “You know.”
“Gives new meaning to someone being at their wits end.” Sebastian chuckled indecently. Mirth plastered across his freckled face.
“There was muggle author who would say ‘the measure of a man is the length of his wit.’” Carina giggled softly into her fingers. She tried not to dwell of the thought of a particular someone’s pressed against her as they snogged her senseless.
“Carina!” Poppy and Natty exclaimed at the same time.
“And what of Charles saying the measure of a man being what he can do with his hands…hmmm.” Ominis placed his chin on his palm, elbow resting on the table. He turned his head towards her. A coy grin on his face.
“He did not say that!” Carina gasped.
“Ask him yourself then.” Ominis gave a toothy grin.
“Guys…” Garreth leaned forward hands resting against the table. “Wit beyond measure is man’s greatest treasure.”
The whole table burst into raucous laughter. Madam Scribner burst around the corner. “What has gotten into you lot.” She stood with her hands on her hips. “Let this be your only warning, quiet!” She hissed. They quieted their giggles with no small amount of effort.
“Ravenclaw has a bit to answer for with that one.” Sebastian wiped his eyes as if he was brought to tears.
“Carina, you should ask Amit about it when you show him those Astronomy tables.” Poppy quietly giggled.
“I’m afraid the humor would be lost on him.” Carina sighed with a smile. “But we will see.”
***
Carina yawned as she made her way back into the common room. She knew she shouldn’t have been out so late but she hadn’t expected to spend her Friday evening scouring a tomb. She received an owl from Sirona after Potions and made for The Hogs Head.
“Do I even want to know where you’ve been?” Ominis sat by the fireplace, book in hand tracing his fingers across the braille lined pages.
Carina scanned the common room. It was thankfully empty. “I went to see the goblin Lodgok.”
“Suppose that explains why you hurried away after Potions” Ominis sighed. “You could have told me.”
“Not around Sebastian, you know how feels about goblins.”
“Of course, how could I forget.” He answered dryly. He closed his book and placed it on the table with a sigh. “How did it go?”
“Well, I suppose.” Carina sat beside him. “He asked me to retrieve a goblin made helm called the Helm of Urtkot.” She told him of Lodgok’s initial mistrust and of how he hoped to gain back Ranrock’s favor.
“How come he couldn’t just get the helm himself.” Ominis seemed displeased that she had gone off alone.
“He said that it could only be retrieved by a wand carrier. The tomb had locked doors that would not open for the unlocking charm. I had to use light to guide moths to act as keys, it was so very intriguing.” Carina hummed happily beside him.
Ominis chuckled. “Even the most harrowing venture would be a nothing to you so long as you have a puzzle to solve.” He placed his hand on her thigh. Ominis began tracing circles with his thumb. The gentle caress pulled her thoughts away from the tomb. “So you were able to find it.”
“Well...” Carina tucked her hair behind her ear. She felt her face heat. She fixated on Ominis’ fingers with their sure grip. ‘The measure of a man being what he could do with his hands….’ He had nice hands, she could still remember how they felt when he rolled her after their fight with the guardian. And even more so, how much she had liked it. Carina’s eyes widened at the train of her thoughts. A flush crept up her neck as she looked away.
“Carina?” She glanced back to Ominis. He had stopped tracing circles. His brow raised in question.
“Hmmm?” She hummed. What were they talking about.
“Did you find the helm?” He asked.
“Oh, well it wasn’t in the tomb after all.” She flushed in embarrassment. He had completely derailed her thoughts. “There was a dead Ashwinder scout in the tomb, likely killed by the spiders there.” She shifted facing Ominis. Much to her displeasure he removed his hand from her thigh. “I found the helm at a poacher campsite not far from the tomb. Officer Singer will have a busy night getting the lot of them booked.” Carina sighed.
“Hmmm, I suppose you are right.” Ominis furrowed his brow. “What makes this helm so special that Lodgok would be able to win favor with it?”
“Apparently it is a valuable heirloom lost to the goblins. It inspired greatness and became a great symbol to them.” Carina tilted her head thoughtfully. “I suppose it will do so again since it has been reclaimed. Lodgok said that he was sure it would distract Ranrock from his search.”
“So he must still be looking for links to whatever names he has.” Ominis sighed closing his eyes. He tilted his head back resting it on the back of the sofa. “Do you think that Ranrock is looking into the keepers? Rackham’s vault, and Bakar’s tower…”
“It is highly likely. But we will have to wait and see.” Carina sighed. “So about tomorrow…” She watched Ominis crack his eyes and shift his gaze in her direction. “What would you like to do for your birthday?”
“I intended to sleep in. What did you have in mind.” Ominis turned towards her.
“I dunno, Sebastian on the other hand might have a few ideas.” Carina sighed.
“I suppose I’ll just see how the day goes.” Ominis chuckled. “Sebastian has some quite erratic schemes."
“Alright then.” Carina smiled. She scooted closer leaning her head on his shoulder. She was curious about Sebastian and his shenanigans. She sighed. She was tired though.
“You need to go to bed.” Ominis hummed beside her.
“Mhmmm.” Carina sleepily agreed. Ominis reached over brushing her hair from her face. His fingers lingering with a gentle warmth. She sighed at the comforting warmth that radiated from Ominis. Her eyes fluttered and shut. The last she remembered was a heavy sigh and a feeling of weightlessness as she was lifted from the sofa.
Chapter Text
Ominis
Ominis was jostled awake by someone kicking his bed frame. “Oi! Happy Birthday.” Sebastian called through the curtain canopy of his bed. “I’m off to breakfast, I know you want to sleep in. I’ll see you later!” The common room door shut as Sebastian left. Greengrass and Flint followed soon after. Ominis sighed. He was thankful to be left alone, especially since Carina was nestled bedside him in his bed.
Was he being selfish sneaking her into his dorm, most certainly. But his desire to be close to her won out on propriety. Ominis knew she was going to be livid, and he was looking forward to it. He snuggled back down beside her warmth, surprised Sebastian’s antics hadn’t woken her. He drifted off with a content smile.
***
Ominis woke at the sound of a light gasp. He cracked his eyes to the ever present darkness. He felt Carina stiffen in his arms. He pulled her closer and yawned.
“Ominis!” She quietly gasped. “Godric’s heart…what am I doing in your bed…” She whined. She buried her face into his chest. Her embarrassment making him smile.
He pulled his hand from her waist as he stretched. Tilting his head he listened to the room, all was quiet, thankfully they were still alone. He reached under his pillow and grabbed his wand. He flicked an orb of magic to allow him to see. “Good morning to you too.” He murmured as he rested his head back on his pillow.
“Ominis!” Carina pushed at his chest. “I can’t be caught in here.” Ominis stared at her, her braided hair had come undone in her sleep, he did quite enjoy it down. He ran his fingers through the length of it, combing the tangled strands with his fingers. “Are you listening to me?” Carina whined beside him.
“Hmmm?” He hummed sleepily. Carina scoffed, her brow furrowed. Her lips scrunched in an attractive pout. She glanced down. Her lips parted in shock.
“Where in Merlin’s name are my clothes?” She held up the sleeve of Ominis’ spare pajama shirt. “Why am I only wearing a shirt!” She glared up at him.
“In my dresser. And it was long enough, or would you like me to clothe your bare legs while you are sleeping.” Ominis grinned. He hadn’t used his magic to see when getting her dressed, but his did greatly enjoy peeling off her trousers. He felt his cheeks heat at the memory. He watched her brows bow as her teeth worried her lip. Discomfort and apprehension lined her face. “Are you blushing?” Ominis asked, he cupped her cheek feeling her over warm skin. His thumb skirting circles around her beauty mark.
“It’s improper Ominis.” She murmured turning towards his touch.
“You smelled like a crypt.” Ominis sighed as he stroked her cheek.
“You could have woken me.” She pleaded
“You were exhausted. Besides, I wanted you to myself. I’ve missed you.” He stopped his attentions to her cheek to watch her. Her brow bowed again.
“I’ve missed you too.” She reached for him and pulled him in for a quick kiss. “Happy Birthday, Omi.” She nuzzled into his chest taking a deep breath.
His chest warmed. He supposed this is what it was like to be truly happy. “My best birthday thus far.” He tilted Carina’s chin so that she looked at him. A shy smile lit her face. He leaned in stealing her lips, smiling as he relished their softness. Carina nipped at his bottom lip causing him to groan. He rolled bracing himself over her. “Not the wisest thing to do, given where we are my Star.” Ominis murmured against her lips. He continued his assault, drinking in her sweet breath. He grazed her lips with his tongue to gain entry. She let out a sigh. The ghost of her smile curved against his lips. He kissed her till he was breathless pulling back with a gasp. There was a click at the door that made them both freeze. Carina stared wide eyed up at him.
“I’m telling you, the Cannons don’t stand a chance this season.” Greengrass entered the room. “I’ve got this season’s rosters and stats in my bag.”
“Oh, please. They’ve never flown better. Even Imelda says they stand a chance for the cup next year.” Flint was tight on his heels. Ominis cocked his head listening.
“Listen, the Magpies have the strongest line up of the season. I’m telling you, they are going places.” Greengrass argued. “Ah, here it is.” Ominis was having a hard time holding his weight over Carina. He rested the barest amount against her, the shift caused her to whimper.
“Shhhh.” Flint admonished. “If you wake Gaunt someone in your bloodline is bound to end up cursed.
“Shit. I forgot he closes his curtains when he’s sleeping in. Let’s go.” Greengrass hurried from the room. With a sigh Flint followed closing the door.
Ominis let out a sigh. He rested his forehead against Carina’s. She bursted into a fit of giggles. His chest warmed at her good humor.
“It’s not that funny.” He smiled down at her. She wiggled beneath him. He drew in a sharp breath. He could feel himself pulsing pressed against her.
“Is that your wand or are you just happy to see me.” She giggled giving him a coy smile.
Ominis flushed. She was teasing him. He ground his hips into her. “You tell me.” She gasped as she squirmed beneath him. He leaned in and captured her lips in a bruising kiss. Her nails scraped against his scalp as she raked through his hair. Her gasps for air matching his frenzied kisses. Ominis snaked a hand down Carina’s waist and grasped her thigh tightly. A sweet moan escaping her lips. He broke away continuing his rain of kisses to her neck. Ominis smiled at the way she shuddered. Carina stroked her hands down his neck, her nails digging into his shoulder through his night clothes forcing a groan from him. Ignoring the ache for more Ominis took a fortifying breath as he broke away and gazed down at her. He could feel her heart thundering in her chest. He wished he could see the flush coating her cheeks. “I believe you look snogged senseless.” Ominis chuckled.
“So do you.” Carina gave a lazy grin. Ominis sat up adjusting himself. Heat rose up his neck, Merlin knew his finer bits were near visible. He couldn’t remember ever having this sort of problem. He sighed and rubbed the back of his neck. “I’m keeping this shirt.” Carina sighed as she sat up beside him. She leaned forward and kissed his cheek.
“Keep that up and you’ll not leave this bed.” Ominis cupped her cheek feeling the heat from her flushed skin leech into his palm.
“Hmmm, I don’t think so.” Carina chided. “Sebastian and the others would definitely notice.” She peeked through the curtains and slipped from the bed. Ominis caught the briefest glimpse of her exposed thighs. He turned away with a blush. “I’ll see you in the common room after I bathe.” Carina whispered. She grabbed her things and disillusioned herself. She crept from the room far more silently than needed.
“She’ll be the death of me.” Ominis smiled as he flopped back onto his bed.
***
“Ah there he is!” Sebastian called from the Slytherin table. Ominis made his way toward him, his magic orb floating aloft in front of him. “I was starting to think you were going to sleep all day.” Ominis yawned.
“I’d considered it.” He sat beside him. He heard Carina’s heels behind him, it hadn’t taken her long to get ready. She said she needed to dry her hair and that he should go on ahead for lunch.
“And where the devil have you been?” Sebastian turned to Carina. “Imelda says you didn’t come back to the dorm last night.”
“I passed out in the library.” Carina sat beside Ominis and reached for the tea service. He smirked at her lie.
“Of course you did.” Sebastian sighed. “I’ve done that loads, much to Madam Scribner’s displeasure.”
“I will admit it was quite… restful.” Carina stirred her tea with a small smile.
“Well since the two of you are well rested, let’s say we head to Feldcroft for a proper birthday celebration.” Sebastian grinned at the two of them.
“Whose birthday are we celebrating?” Garreth plopped down beside Carina.
“I do love a good party.” Poppy squeeze in between them.
“Who says you’re invited, Weasley.” Sebastian peered around Ominis.
“There goes your peaceful day.” Carina turned to Ominis giggling.
“It’s never peaceful around Sebastian.” Ominis sighed. “And last I heard we weren’t allowed in Feldcroft.” Ominis furrowed his brow.
“Anne has nagged Solomon to death all week, he says you can come, so long as we stay out of trouble.” Sebastian leaned on the table facing them. “So, what do you say?”
“Suppose I’ve no choice.” Ominis hummed. “I can feel this one practically vibrating with excitement.” Ominis hooked his thumb at Carina who was nearly out of her seat from tapping her foot on the floor. “And I suppose Weasley can come, so the girls don’t gang up on us.”
“I can promise an exceptional birthday brew.” Garreth grinned.
“No!” Poppy and Carina both shouted. A fit of giggles ensued.
***
“Did they have to kick us out of the house?” Sebastian sat beside Ominis on the low rock wall near the training dummies.
“I think they wanted Garreth away from the kitchen.” Ominis shrugged. Ominis also knew that Carina had brought whatever tincture she had already prepared for Anne. She needed Sebastian and Solomon out of the house to give it to her.
“I only offered to help.” Garreth lifted the arms of the training dummy. “I’m not always a complete disaster.”
“Believe me, you don’t want to be in Carina’s way in the kitchen.” Ominis sighed. “She’s lethal with a wooden spoon.”
“Have first hand experience with that do you.” Sebastian laughed.
“Unfortunately.” Ominis grinned rubbing the back of his neck. He had tried to sneak food exactly three times before he learned his lesson.
“How would you know.” Garreth looked toward him with his brow raised in surprise.
“This git spent the summer in London with Carina and her parents.” Sebastian pushed Ominis playfully.
“Yes because being blind in muggle London is so exciting.” Ominis shoved back.
“Her parents looked after you well enough though. You even let them cut your hair.” Sebastian shook his head. He jumped up from the wall and stretched.
“Flora can be quite persuasive.” Ominis sighed. She all but demanded to cut his hair by August. It wasn’t as terrible as he thought it would be.
“Who’s Flora?” Garreth peeked under the dueling mask of the training dummy.
“Carina’s mum. Charles is the mischievous one though, he locked Carina out of the library for a week. Hid the key and left clues all through the house for her to find.” Ominis pinched his brow. He did miss the eccentric muggle.
“Bet she loved that.” Sebastian scoffed.
“Undoubtedly.” There was a chorus of giggles from the house.
“What are they doing in there?” Sebastian looked to the house with a perplexed expression. Ominis tilted his head listening.
“Please Carina.” Poppy and Anne whined.
“Oh alright.” Carina huffed.
“Your hair is so long. No wonder you just braid it.” Poppy hummed.
“Well, it’s unmanageable most times.” Carina had told him that once before. “Flora is always fussing over it, it never meets muggle standards I’m afraid. It never stays pinned up.”
“Well, I think it is lovely.” Anne hummed.
“Oh no, it’s uneven.” Poppy moaned.
“Thanks Poppy.” Carina giggled. “It’ll do honestly. I never pay attention to what my hair looks like these days.” Another fit of giggles and the girls got back to talking about cooking.
“Seems they are talking about Carina’s hair.” Ominis shrugged.
“Girls, put them together and they become an enigma.” Sebastian pulled out his wand and sent a basic cast at the training dummy Garreth was inspecting.
“Hey!” Garreth yelped.
“So, Garreth, why aren’t you in Crossed Wands?” Sebastian shot a few more casts at a near by dummy.
“What can I say, I’m a lover not a fighter.” Garreth shrugged. “Besides, my Aunt would kill me, and I choose life.”
“Let’s have a go.” Sebastian rolled up his sleeves.
“Look, I don’t want any trouble.” Garreth held his hands up warily.
“No trouble, just a light duel.” Sebastian grinned. Surely this was going to be interesting.
“Oh, alright.” Garreth pulled out his wand in resignation. Ominis took a step back, he didn’t want to be in the crossfire.
***
“Should we tell them that the foods done?” Poppy asked as the girls came outside.
“Sebastian.” Anne sighed.
Sebastian had Garreth pinned behind a training dummy. He was forced to fire spells around it in an attempt to combat Sebastian’s onslaught of spells.
“Perhaps you should lend a hand.” Ominis tilted his head to the girls. He watched as Carina pulled out her wand with a grin. She disillusioned herself and crept along the low wall. With quick sure movements she snuck behind Sebastian.
“ Petrificus totalis!” She called as she broke her disillusionment. Sebastian dropped like a log.
“Brilliant.” Garreth called from around the training dummy. “I was starting to fear for my life.”
Carina giggled as she tapped Sebastian with her foot. “Sorry, Sebastian.” She waved her wand and he scrambled to his feet.
“You are terrifying.” Sebastian admonished as he brushed himself off.
“That I am well aware. Foods done by the way.” Carina tucked her wand into one of the lopsided buns on the top of her head, like wonky ears. Ominis couldn’t help but find the look cute.
They sat crammed around the table that they had moved outside. Solomon refused to have the lot of them inside the house at the same time. “Well, this is quite the spread.” Solomon sat beside Anne, his brows raised in surprise at what the girls were able to put together. Carina’s magic orb hovered over the table. A rib roast sat already carved surrounded by an assortment of vegetables, mashed potatoes, gravy and rolls.
“Most of it was Carina I’m afraid.” Anne’s sighed beside him. She seemed well. Ominis wondered if she had already taken some of the tincture. He spied what he believed to be her mini treacle tarts on the table. Along with two trays of toffee fudge.
“I like to cook.” Carina giggled as she helped herself to the potatoes.
“Is that why you’re so good at Potions?” Anne asked.
“Maybe.” Carina shrugged with a small grin.
“Is there anything you’re not good at?” Sebastian shot at her.
“Do you want a list?” Carina raised her brow at him as she took a bite of her roast.
“It would be shorter than everything you can.” Poppy giggled from beside Sebastian.
“Ice skate and cast a Patronus charm.” Carina sat with a perplexed expression. Possibly thinking of more things to add.
“Really, that’s it?” Garreth asked incredulously. Solomon sat on his other side pinching his brow.
“Look, I’ve never tried to cast a Patronus either, we don’t learn those til next year.” Sebastian reasoned as he chewed his food.
Ominis raised a brow as he tilted his head towards Carina. “Family trait.” She hissed under her breath at his expression. Her Parseltongue was improving.
“You should also add that you can’t walk on an even surface without tripping.” Ominis added with a smirk. Filing away her admission for a later inquiry.
“I’ll never live down tripping over that rug in the kitchen.” Carina grumbled picking at a roll.
Good natured conversation followed over the pros and cons of rugs. Garreth was quizzed on if his aunt was an unregistered animangus. Solomon detailed how she was caught sneaking out of school at all the right moon phases and how she strangely smelt like mandrake leaves in their 6th year.
***
“I get it now!” Sebastian melted as he ate a piece of fudge. “I think I’d curse someone over this stuff too.” He helped himself to more as everyone worked on the desserts.
“It’s actually better than Flora’s.” Ominis grumbled. He really didn’t want to share, but Carina had made two trays. Carina put her share on his plate. He quirked a small smile.
“Alright!” Carina stood. “Time for presents!” She and Anne made for the house and came back with a few packages. She placed them in front of him.
Ominis raised his wand to hover over the pile. “I didn’t want anything.”
“That’s too bad.” Sebastian sat back crossing his arms.
“If it makes you feel better, I didn’t get you anything.” Garreth added. There was a collective groan from the girls.
Ominis let out a huff and took the first present. It was from Poppy. He carefully opened it, unsure what she could have possibly gotten him. He opened a box of Chocolate Cauldrons. He raised a brow.
“Natty said that you would enjoy them, so they are from both of us.” Poppy happily chimed from her seat. He nearly missed Carina tucking a loose lock of hair behind her ear.
“Thank you, they have become one of my favorites.” He gave another slight grin.
“Open this one.” Carina handed him a box from the pile.
“From The Sallows.” Ominis quirked a smile. He opened the lid. A chain and matching cuff links greeted him as he held his wand over the container.
“So that you can look even more put together in your new wardrobe.” Sebastian crooked a smile. Ominis ran his fingers over the cool metal, a watch chain, but no watch. Not that it mattered, the thought was still there.
“I’ll be sure to wear them. Thank you.”
“The least we could do, you are practically family.”Solomon replied gruffly.
Ominis picked up the next box. Holding his wand over the tag. From Carina. Ominis carefully tore the paper. Lifting the lid of a velvet box, he held his wand over a glowing pocket watch. Clearly imbued with ancient magic. He clicked it open and watched the hand tick. Glowing symbols lining its surface. He ran his thumb over the face. Dots marking the time. He did not think such a thing existed. His voice got stuck in his throat as he tried to speak. She gave him a pocket watch… a tradition that he didn’t think he would get to enjoy. A tradition usually shared between family and loved ones.
“Do you not like it?” Carina whispered to him with the tiniest quiver to her voice.
“I love it.” He replied thicker than he meant to. He cleared his throat. He felt tears threatening in his eyes. He blinked them shut.
“Here.” Solomon stood from his seat at the table and came around to him. “Let’s get it on the chain for you.” He took the chain they had gifted him and helped him attach it to the watch. He placed a firm hand on Ominis’ shoulder. “Happy Birthday boy.” He gave another squeeze and made for the house.
“Gotta give the man credit, he does care.” Sebastian murmured from his seat.
Ominis didn’t know what to say. He felt wanted and seen all at the same time. He carefully placed the pocket watch back into its velvet box. He reached for the next box, small in comparison, he opened it. Still as speechless. A piece of paper lay over wrapping paper. “A te pro te.” Ominis murmured holding his wand over the paper.
“From thee, for thee.” Carina sighed. “The Savage motto.”
Ominis set the scrap of paper to the side. From the wrappings he pulled a signet ring. Carina gasped at his side. He could just make out the crest in the face. The Savage crest. Six lions on a gilded shield, he could feel the armored helm detail at the top of the shield. Charles had told him of his family and their crest, how each generation received the ring to give to the next. Only, he had no sons. The tears that had earlier threatened to fall fell in earnest.
“What is it?” Sebastian murmured to Carina.
“Charles has given him his signet ring.” Carina whispered back. “It’s a muggle tradition, the eldest son gets the ring to hand down as they carry on the line, it’s just, Charles has only me and no sons.” Carina turned to look at Ominis.
Ominis turned the ring in his fingers. He carefully slid it on to his right ring finger. The cool metal felt heavy, not with expectation or dread, but open fatherly affection. He opened and closed his hand getting a feel for the ring. He wiped his eyes on his sleeve. “Sorry.”
“Tears aren’t weakness, nothing to apologize for.” Garreth spoke up. His demeanor subdued.
“Open the last one.” Anne called from across the table.
Ominis cleared his throat and reached for the last box. It was flat and sealed with a ribbon. He untied it with uncertainty, unsure what to expect. He hovered his wand over another chain. He lifted it from the box to find a key at the end. He furrowed his brow, who would gift him a key.
“There’s a note in the box.” Carina called, she handed it to him.
He held his wand over the note. “Means.” Ominis read aloud. It was written on personal stationary. Astera Beaumont-Malfoy. Ominis ran his thumb over the intricate key.
“Is that… a vault key.” Garreth asked.
Carina peered at the note. “Seems you’ve been gifted that dowry." She had the slightest curve to her lips. Her mother had found a way to keep his father from getting her dowry.
Chapter Text
Carina
Carina looked at the golden chain and key that Ominis’ held. Means. Seems she now knew what her mother had been up to in that day in Diagon Alley.
“What dowry?” Anne asked. Carina looked at her with a raised brow. Sebastian scratched the back of his ear. He cut her a look, he hadn’t told her anything it seemed.
“I am to court the Malfoy Heiress.” Ominis continued to rub his thumb over the key. He looped the chain over his head and tucked it into his shirt.
“And here I thought Leander was joking.” Garreth sat back in his chair open mouthed.
“Who says?” Anne snapped. Carina looked back to her with surprise.
“Well, my father for one, and I met with Astera Malfoy over the summer.” Ominis appeared quite perplexed, with his brow knitted together.
“Since when did you care about pureblood politics?” Anne countered with displeasure. Carina blanched at the accusation. Ominis rolled his wand between his fingers, he clinched and unclenched his jaw.
“Anne.” Sebastian put his hand on her shoulder.
“Have you met her?” Garreth asked Ominis. Carina looked to Poppy and Sebastian. They both cut their eyes to Garreth. Ominis sighed.
“Of course, she is not like her family. That is all you’ll get from me Garreth.” Ominis rubbed his brow in frustration.
Carina wondered how much longer she was going to be able to keep her secret. The plot would definitely be up next year when Septimus started school. She looked out over the hamlet and sighed.
“You seem to be feeling better.” Sebastian leveled at Anne. “You usually don’t have the energy to argue.”
“Perhaps she needed a visit from all of us to give her some pep.” Poppy countered for her.
“Yes, it is nice to have company.” Anne sighed. She still carried a tiredness under here eyes, but so far she had not had one outburst of pain. Two drops of the tincture had bought her hours pain free. Carina smiled at her. Subdued silence filled the space between them.
The spell was broken with a chorus of jovial laughter from the stall where Mr. Ndiaye sold his wares. Carina glanced over to see a man showing off a snake shaped horn. One that Carina more than recognized. “Is that who I think it is?” She cocked her head. Everyone turned to look except for Ominis. He tilted his head.
“Oh, it’s that musician that’s in Hogsmeade from time to time.” Garreth leaned back in his chair.
Carina grinned, that was just what they needed to liven the tense mood. She shot from her chair and practically skipped over.
“Where is she going?” Ominis asked. He tilted his head as she left.
“Not a clue.” Sebastian murmured.
“Mr. Ernie Lark, I thought that was you!” Carina called as she approached. “I see you still have your faithful snake horn.” Carina smiled up at the man.
“Well bless my stars, Carina Savage. How are you my dear.” He smiled down at her.
“I am quite well.” She hummed. “What brings you to Feldcroft?”
“I go where the music takes me.” Mr. Lark laughed. “Bernard here found me an interesting drum to add to my line up.”
“Oh, that should add a nice timber.”
“My thoughts exactly. So what has brought you all the way down to Feldcroft? Last I saw you, you were in Upper Hogsfield helping out dear Mrs. Sprottle.” Ernie adjusted the horn under his arm.
“Oh, we are celebrating. It’s our friend Ominis’ seventeenth today.” She gestured to everyone still at the table. Sebastian and Garreth had gotten up and were looking over Ominis’ pocket watch.
“Oh! Well then, I suppose some music is in order!” Mr. Lark exclaimed. He turned to Mr. Ndiaye. “You don’t think the rest of the hamlet will mind do you?”
“They could use the distraction, what with the goblins lurking around Rookwood Castle.” He tilted his head toward the castle ruin in the distance. Carina couldn’t help but wonder if it had any relation to Professor Rookwood.
“Splendid. I’ll get the rest of my instruments ready.” He looked to Carina. “I hope your friends are up for some lively dancing.”
“I’ll let them know.” Carina grinned and returned to the table.
“On speaking terms with traveling musicians are we.” Garreth asked, his brows raised.
“I’ve tipped him every time I’ve seen him play.” Carina hummed happily. She did enjoy good music. “He says he is going to play for us.”
“Oh! That’s wonderful.” Anne sighed. “The hamlet could use a bit of liveliness.”
***
Mr. Lark had amassed quite a few instruments since she last saw him. Along with his horn, snake instrument, and new drum, he had a lute, accordion, and a violin. He played several lively tunes. Several residents had come out to watch the show, a few even danced along. Sebastian and Poppy twirled around to an upbeat folk song. Carina couldn’t help but smile.
“What do you say, lets have a turn?” Garreth asked from beside her. He stood offering his hand.
“Oh, well…” Carina really didn’t feel like dancing. She was content to stay by Anne and Ominis. “I don’t know the steps to this dance.” She only knew formal dances. “I’ll likely just stomp your feet.”
“It’s not hard.” Anne said at her side. “Even Ominis knows the steps.
“Do you really?” Carina turned to him.
“Sebastian and Anne made sure I learned some summers ago.” Carina noticed how he fiddled with Charles’ ring as he spoke. He seemed lost in thought.
“Go on then.” Anne gently pushed her towards Garreth. Carina stumbled as she stood. She glared back at Anne who grinned. Ominis wore an unreadable expression on his face. She turned and took Garreth proffered hand.
Carina tried her best to match the steps that Garreth led with. She stumbled several times. She was quite sure she had stepped on all of his toes. Garreth wore a pained expression.
“Sorry.” She mumbled as she stepped on his foot again. Her face was hot from her embarrassment.
“It’s fine.” He huffed as he attempted to spin her. As she spun she lost her footing and she fell in a heap on top of him.
“That’s it, I give up.” She jumped up and brushed off her skirt, embarrassed and annoyed. Garreth stayed in a beet red heap at her feet.
“Oh, another thing our shining star can’t do?” Sebastian came to a stop beside them. Poppy skipped over grabbing Anne and bringing her in for a dance.
“Shut it Sallow.” Carina snapped. She turned to head back to where Ominis was seated.
“It’s not my fault you’re bad at this dance.” He called behind her with a laugh.
Carina sighed. She supposed she was glad Sebastian and Poppy were having fun. And a few others who had come out to enjoy the music. As she reached the table Ominis stood.
“Come on.” He held out his hand to her.
“I’ll just trip over your feet.” Carina lamented.
“I’ll catch you. Besides, you’ve toppled me before.” He grinned. “You’re not bad at this dance, you just need the right partner.” Ominis murmured to her as he took her hand. “Don’t watch your feet, just let me lead and do as I say.”
Carina flushed. Ominis pulled her in and set a steady pace. The steps far simpler than what she had followed with Garreth. She had never seen Ominis dance nor had she danced over the summer. She found herself following his steps easily enough. He chuckled as they linked arms and spun in different directions, atleast this time she managed to stay upright. He grabbed her hand and pulled her back in with a smile plastered on his handsome face. She caught a glint of gold from the chain that rested around his neck. He had a few visible moles on his chest, Carina wondered if he had others.
“Alright, time to spin.” Ominis sent her for a twist. She still stumbled over the uneven ground but he kept her hands steady and kept her upright. His hands warm and strong in comparison to Garreth’s. She looked up at him with a warm smile. He too wore a toothy grin. His eyes practically glowing from the magic from the magic orb. Carina couldn’t miss the slightest blush that colored his cheeks. The sight nearly stole her breath, between the look of contentment on his face and the way he looked at her. Warmth flooded her chest, familiar, altering.
Before she could ponder the feeling she was snatched away from Ominis by Poppy as the music changed. She linked arms with her and skipped away to Anne. She giggled as Anne linked arms with her too and they half danced and half skipped in a circle. The boys stood back and watched. Carina couldn’t miss the grin on Sebastian’s face as he nudged Ominis.
The girls broke apart in a fit of giggles as the song ended. The last light of day bleeding from the hamlet.
“Alas loves, I believe it is time to call it a night.” Mr. Lark called to everyone that had gathered. “I appreciate the tips and I hope that you all enjoyed the show.” He gave a bow. Everyone gave a lively round of applause.
“Oh, that was so much fun.” Anne sighed
“I only nearly twisted my ankle a dozen times.” Carina sighed.
“You were enjoying yourself at the end though.” Poppy giggled quietly beside her. Carina felt her cheeks heat further.
“Hmmm, guilty.” Anne smiled at her. Only to furrow her brow after a second.
“Are you ok?” Sebastian had joined them.
“I’m fine, Sebastian.” Anne sighed up at him. “Today has been just what I needed.”
“Well, I am glad. My feet not so much.” Garreth slumped into a chair taking off one of his shoes and rubbing his foot.
“I warned you.” Carina called to him.
“Yea, well, clearly I’m a glutton for punishment.” Garreth sighed.
***
“Are you girls all set?” Solomon asked with his brows raised. Carina and Poppy sat on the bed with Anne. Carina had transfigured the frame and mattress to fit the three of them.
“We are fine, Uncle Solomon.” Anne sighed.
“If you are sure.” He had come back inside from setting the boys in the out building. “I hope those boys will stay out of trouble.”
“I hope the same.” Carina sighed and flopped back. “Anne, how are you feeling.” She was curious if the tincture she had given her was still helping.
“I actually feel close to normal for the first time in a long time.” She sat looking down with her hands in her lap.
“So it worked?” Poppy exclaimed turning to Carina.
“It would seem so, for now.” She sighed happily.
“What worked? What are you girls going on about.” Solomon leaned against the wall. His eyes narrowed at Carina.
“I brewed a tincture for Anne, to see if it would be able to help her.” She admitted as she sat up. She picked at her sleeve before looking into Solomon’s disapproving eyes.
“There is no cure, I’ve told you and Sebastian this far too many times.” He clenched his jaw.
“But it’s not a cure.” Carina insisted. “If you will allow me to explain, I can tell you what I did.
“Fine, I’m listening.” Solomon crossed his arms.
“Ok, first we all know that Anne was cursed, and it causes her immense bouts of pain. There has been no cure, not from Nurse Blainey to St. Mungos.” Poppy nodded along beside her. “But they would all choose to treat her using magical means. So, I had a thought. What is one thing that does not differentiate between wizardkind or muggles?” She held up a solitary finger waiting for an answer.
“I’m sure you are going to tell us regardless.” Solomon grumbled.
“Pain. We all feel it.” Carina hummed. “So, since it’s the same feeling, using the same or similar nerve receptors. I decided that I would look into muggle means of pain relief.” Carina took a breath and wiped her palms on her skirt. “Opium is predominantly the best means, though addictive. I essentially combined muggle and magical means into a tincture. A potent Wiggenweld base, opium and a few other immense healing ingredients and there you have it. Magical pain relief. It’s not a cure, more of a…palliative measure to preserve quality of life.”
“But how did you know it would work.” Anne asked beside her.
“I tested on myself first actually.” Carina tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear. “As you can see, I am sporting several piercings to my ears, they would have taken weeks to heal. And the ones on top hurt a great deal.” She showed her ears to her captive audience. “And the drops were surprisingly effective with cramps from my courses.”
Solomon coughed. “Well…” He cleared his throat. “How often is she to take this tincture.” He had turned away. Clearly uncomfortable.
“Well, I’d say two drops in the morning and two drops at night.” Carina pondered. “Of course, the moment it is not enough, let me know and I’ll tweak the recipe.”
“I seems that I have misjudged you.” Solomon turned back to her. “I am glad that you are not like your father.”
“Oh but I am, I am like Charles.” Carina smiled.
Solomon gave a nod. “I’m going to make sure Sebastian isn’t bullying Matilda’s nephew. I’ll be back after a while.” As the door shut Anne waited mere seconds before she turned on them.
“So, when were you lot going to let me know that Ominis was practically engaged.” Anne squared her thin shoulders watching the two of them.
“I’m honestly surprised Sebastian kept his big mouth shut all summer.” Carina laughed.
“It’s not funny.” Anne admonished her. “You know Ominis hates his family. I can’t believe he would go along with their wishes like that.”
Carina sighed and she looked to Poppy. “He didn’t plan to at first. He was quite upset when he was told his father had picked someone for him. He claimed Ominis’ blindness was a blessing because she has her own ‘abnormality.’” Carina shook her head.
“Well you know how it feels though, didn’t your family pair you with a muggle.” Anne queried.
“How do you know about Henry?” Carina gasped.
“Ominis told me.” Anne furrowed her brow. “He said you were not pleased with the arrangement.”
“Because Henry is a rake and an arse.” Carina scoffed.
“A rake.” Poppy scrunched her nose. “Like for leaves?”
“Oh no, it’s a muggle term.” Carina shook her head. “It signifies a man who is vastly immoral, and in Henry’s case, so long as you are young, pretty, and have a good figure he will do his best to get in your knickers.” Carina blushed at the thought.
“Oh!” Anne flushed.
“I am glad that arrangement is moot now.” Carina sighed. “And to answer your question about Ominis, he agreed to his family’s demands because of who they wanted him to court.”
“A pureblood heiress, with a large dowry.” Anne scoffed.
“Well, yes.” Carina said her shoulders deflating.
“I don’t like it.” Anne argued. “He is like a brother to me, I can’t have his family sucking him back into their pureblood madness.”
“They won’t.” Carina sighed. She wouldn’t let his family get their claws into him, no matter the cost.
“And how do you know.”
“Because, I am the heiress.” Carina gave a weak smile. Poppy nodded along beside her in solidarity. Anne’s eyes widened with disbelief.
“But you’re from a muggle family.” She challenged.
“They are my abnormality, along with my albinism.” Carina sighed. “It’s why Charles gave Ominis his ring.” She tucked her hair behind her ear.
“And why he looked so damn happy dancing with you.” Poppy gave a dreamy sigh.
“I don’t get it, if you are the Malfoy heiress, why are you living with muggles!” Anne asked.
“I was believed to be a squib, and was sent to live with one, Flora. She and her husband adopted me. I have two sets of parents really.” Carina looked down at her hands.
“But you weren’t actually a squib.” Anne gasped.
“Precisely.” Carina sighed.
“Even Solomon knows, he found out after the incident at the catacomb.” Poppy flopped back on the bed.
“I can’t believe they didn’t tell me.” Anne sat back against her pillow.
“Well, I think they were preoccupied. What with you being ill and Sebastian being reckless.” Poppy curled her arms around her knees.
“Well, I suppose.” Anne sighed.
“Don’t worry, you can bully Sebastian about it later.” Carina smiled. She flopped down on her pillow as Solomon returned. A night of girly gossip and disgruntled sighs of an uncle who would rather sleep outside with a group of teenage boys ensued.
***
Carina stumbled over a rock as she stepped off the moon lit path. “Careful, I’m sure they can hear us, even at this distance.” Poppy called from infront of her. They walked through the Forbidden Forest with muted steps.
“Sorry.” Carina sighed. Normally she was not so clumsy. “It’s so dark this far into the forest.” She scanned the darkened trees, the faintest light trickled through the changing leaves. The moon hung overhead, full with its cool light.
“It’s just ahead, you can just see it.” Poppy had stopped and pointed ahead. Carina came to a stop beside her. Through the dense trees, an iridescent glow broke past the forest’s perpetual shadow. “We will have to approach slowly, unicorns can be quite mistrustful. They won’t attack, unless threatened.” Poppy crept forward slowly.
“Well, that’s reassuring.” Carina followed at a slowed pace. The glow ahead of them intensifying as they approached the grove. The soft trickle of a stream could be heard nearby. A quiet hush fell over the area as they stepped through the trees into the clearing. A lone white unicorn lifted its head at their approach.
“Oh, aren’t you lovely.” Poppy whispered. She stopped. Allowing the unicorn to acclimate to their presence.
“Look!” Carina pointed just behind the unicorn. A small golden foal stood on thin legs held up by tiny golden hooves. Poppy looked to her and smiled.
“I think they might let us approach. They more readily trust women.” Poppy took slow measured steps with her hands gently raised in surrender. The unicorn huffed and shook its mane, the sharp horn atop its head gleamed in the moonlight. Poppy stopped as the unicorn pawed the ground. Once it settled they began their approach again.
The unicorn tilted its head towards Carina. Her eyes widened as the beast stepped forward and stuck its muzzle into her hair. The unicorns warm sniffles tickled her neck and she giggled. With shaking hands she reached up to stroke the unicorns snout. “Aren’t you friendly.” Carina whispered.
“Perhaps it is your hair that has drawn her in. She might think you are her kin.” Poppy placed a sure hand along the unicorns neck, stroking her snowy coat.
“Maybe.” Carina peered around the unicorns muzzle to the little foal at her side. She held out her hand and was met with a tentative nuzzle before the foal snorted and bolted around its mother. Carina and Poppy both giggled at the sight.
“I wonder how old it is?” Poppy crouched and held out a hand to the rambunctious foal. It skipped close to her and then darted away with a playful whine.
“I’m not sure, but it looks young.” Carina stood awkwardly as the unicorn continued to nuzzle her hair.
“Any idea where your moss could be?” Poppy asked as the foal approached her again and nudged her with its small bump of a horn.
“The text didn’t specify. I’ll have to have a look around.” Carina shrugged. “If that’s ok with this one.” She scratched the unicorns chin and earned a contented huff.
While Poppy played with the foal Carina scouted the grove. There were moss covered logs and moss covered rocks, no magical presence to either. No moss along the stream. She approached the curved tree that served as a dome like shelter. Sparse slivers of moonlight trickled through to the sponge like bedding inside. An almost indiscernible glow lit the ground. Carina crouched to get a closer look.
She reached out running her hand over the moss bedding. A shifting shimmer followed the path of her fingers. “Found you.” Carina smiled. She collected a large selection of moss in several vials. She turned to the unicorn that still followed her. “Thank you.” She leaned in to nuzzle the gentle creature.

The following Sunday, Carina woke to the sound of books toppling from a table. She shot up looking around the dormitory.
“Sorry!” Imelda cringed. She had her broom tucked under her arm.
“Where are you off to broom in tow. You just beat Ravenclaw in yesterday’s match.” Carina rubbed her eyes. Seems she slept later than she meant to.
“I had a maneuver I wanted to try.” She picked up the books off the floor and put them back in place on her bedside table.
“Good luck then.” Carina yawned and slid out of bed. She made her way to the wash basin with bleary eyes. She spashed her face and shivered. “So cold.” She groaned. She looked up at her reflection. Dark circles stood out under her eyes in contrast to her pale skin. She sighed. She supposed turning seventeen wouldn’t change the way she looked overnight. She grabbed her toiletries and headed for a bath.
Feeling more refreshed Carina entered the common rooms main area. Sebastian greeted her. “Well good morning to you.” He sat sprawled at a table with Flint and Greengrass. Piles of discarded parchment surrounded them. They both looked far more stressed than usual.
“Morning. Where’s Ominis?” Carina glanced around the common room. He was nowhere to be seen. She had hoped he would be waiting on her.
“He left with Amit after breakfast, no clue as to where though.” Sebastian shrugged. “I wasn’t aware that they were friendly.”
“I can say the same.” She shrugged. “So why do you two look so stressed.” Carina eyed Flint and Greengrass.
“They’ve put their Charms assignment off till the last minute.” Sebastian sniggered. “I was being a good sport and lending a hand.”
“That’s a load of tosh!” Greengrass glared at him. He turned to Carina and hooked his thumb at Sebastian. “He has been poking fun at us most of the morning.”
“Probably because the two of you care more about your Quidditch stats than your schoolwork.” Carina hummed.
“How would you…you know what, never mind.” Flint grumbled.
“The art to the nonverbal casting is concentration.” Carina pulled out her wand and pointed it towards her dorm. Parchment came flying into her hand moments later. “And intent.” She placed her notes on the table, her hand pressed against the parchment as she leaned forward. She narrowed her eyes and looked between the two Slytherins. “I best get my notes back, or I’ll torch your brooms.”
Flint paled and Greengrass swallowed whatever lump was in his throat. “Th..thank you.”
“You are most welcome.” Carina pulled back with a huff.
“Well aren’t you charitable this morning.” Sebastian remarked.
“I’ve been known to be, I’m off to the library. I’ll see you later.” Carina left the common room and made her way to Central Hall.
“Carina!” Natty called from the balcony overlooking the library. She hurried down to where Carina stood by Central Halls fountain. “I was hoping to see you, Poppy was looking for you.” Natty rambled breathlessly.
“Take a breath first.” Carina laughed.
“She needs us in Hogsmeade.” Natty continued.
“Oh, ok.” She supposed she could ask Madam Scribner about access to the restricted section later. “Why does she need us?”
“She did not say, but she said it was important.” Natty sighed.
***
“Thank Merlin!” Poppy called as Carina and Natty made their way into Hogsmeade. She stood infront of the leaning tower of cauldrons.
“You seem so relieved.” Carina sighed as Poppy hurried over.
“Yes! I need your help.” Poppy grabbed her arm and pulled her down the lane. Natty laughed beside her.
“Poppy Sweeting!” Carina stumbled after her. “What has gotten into you?”
“I need you to help me pick an outfit for a date.” Poppy blushed as they stopped in-front of Gladrags.
“Oh, seems that Sebastian is putting forth some effort.” Natty giggled.
Carina smiled. “It is an emergency.” She giggled as they entered the shop.
Mr. Hill was more than accommodating. Finding several options for Poppy to try. She forced Carina and Natty to try on dresses too, so she wouldn’t be alone.
“I must admit, I do like this one.” Natty swished in a marigold colored skirt.
“I do too, but I would not look good in such a bright color.” Carina sighed. She stepped out from the partition, she flared the skirt to the dress she put on. “I suppose purple will always be my color.” Looked into the mirror. The dress she wore accentuated her small waist, she had more curves than she remembered. The dress it self was charming.
“Oh my!” Natty gasped as Carina turned to her and Poppy.
“That dress is lovely.” Poppy squealed. “You must wear it for the rest of the day.”
“Oh, I wasn’t planning on purchasing it…” Carina looked down at the dress. It was lovely…but she would only want to wear it for one person…who was interestingly enough out and about without her. And without a single word or mention of her birthday. Carina huffed in frustration.
“My dear, as always, you’ve quite the eye for fashion. I must say that dress is on the house, I can’t let you leave without it.” Mr. Hill called from the counter.
“But…” Carina looked to him with uncertainty. Poppy and Natty squealed as they came to inspect the dress further. They eventually paid for their own dresses and they left the shop. Carina furrowed her brow. She wasn’t sure why the whole thing seemed odd. A light caught her attention as they turned to go down the lane. A tiny trail of ancient magic leading towards Honeydukes. Carina followed the trail across the square and inside.
“Have a sweet tooth all of the sudden?” Poppy asked as she and Natty followed Carina through the shop.
“You could say that.” Carina murmured absentmindedly. She followed the magic to a shelf lined with chocolate. An orb of magic hovered over a box of Chocolate Cauldrons. A scrap of paper tucked into the box. She picked up the box and removed the note.
Many search for me.
I can be forced or unfiltered,
Joyful or cynical.
I breed shame or more of the same.
Carina furrowed her brow. She narrowed her eyes at Ominis’ handwriting. Seems she now knew what he was up to.
“What’s that?” Poppy asked.
“A riddle.” Carina handed her the note.
“What does it mean?” Natty asked.
“It means we are going to Zonko’s next.” Carina shook her head.
“Why?” Poppy looked up.
“Because the answer is laughter and where better to laugh than a joke shop.” Carina sighed. She wondered where Ominis’ scavenger hunt would lead.
From Zonko’s, the clues left for Carina lead the girls to The Three Broomstick for free butterbeer, Steeply and Sons for more sweets, a feline cuddle at Brood and Peck with some adorable kneazle kittens. By late afternoon their last clue had them searching Tomes and Scrolls.
“What did it say again?” Poppy called from the upper floor.
“No greater spell you can find, than when you broaden your mind. In these pages lay kings of ages. Castles old and forgotten mages.” Carina huffed as she scoured the lower shelves. She had been certain they were looking for a spell book of some kind. But perhaps not. “Mr. Brown, do you have any muggle books.” Carina called. He sat quill in hand compiling his records while the girls carried out their search.
“Third shelf from the top.” He called as he grabbed a new sheet of parchment.
Carina climbed the stairs and peered at the shelf. Some Shakespeare, one Brontë novel, and a worn book with no print on the spine. She pulled it from the shelf. Le Morte d'Arthur . She knew she had never read this one. She opened the book to find yet another folded note.
“Got it.” Carina called. She descended the stairs.
“You may take that book with you.” Mr Brown called as he looked up from his bookkeeping.
“Of course.” Carina sighed. The girls stepped out onto the cobbled street. She tucked her new book into her now full bag.
“So what does this note say.” Natty asked.
Carina unfolded the note to find a single arrow drawn on the parchment. She furrowed her brow. “An arrow?” She tilted the page to show Poppy and Natty. The arrow turned at the slight movement. “Oh!” She exclaimed. She held the parchment flat and turned from side to side. The arrow continued to point north. “It’s pointing the way.” Carina grinned.
“This has been quite fun.” Natty sighed.
“It has.” Poppy smiled. “But we are going to head back to the castle.”
Carina looked between them. She pursed her lips. Poppy and Natty both grinned. Poppy sprung forward and wrapped Carina in a tight hug. Natty joined a bit more subdued. “Happy Birthday!” They both chimed.
“I should have known.” Carina giggled. “You didn’t need a dress for a date after all.”
“I didn’t, but you did.” Poppy giggled. Natty gave a sly smile beside her.
“Oh!” Carina blushed. Clearly Ominis had put them up to the whole thing.
“Have fun.” Natty called as she pulled Poppy towards the Castle.
Carina sighed and smiled down at the parchment in her hand. She supposed that she couldn’t be upset with Ominis after all.
She followed the arrow as it pointed her way through the village, up past Dogweed and Deathcap. She gave a relieved sigh to find Ominis seated under the tree on the hill. A blanket spread beneath him. His eyes were closed as if he were napping as he leaned against the trees trunk. He opened them at her approach, the barest glow of his magic within their depths.
“I am more than a little cross with you.” Carina stood before him with her hands on her hips.
“No, you’re not.” He stretched.
“Well, I was.” Carina sighed setting down her bag, she sat beside him. “You seem pleased with yourself.” She couldn’t miss the ghost of a smile that he must have been fighting.
“Heaven forbid wanting you to have a wonderful birthday.” Ominis shook his head with a grin. He looked at her with a soft smile. “Happy Birthday.”
Carina laughed and leapt forward throwing her arms around his neck. She planted a kiss on his cheek. She pulled back beaming. “I have had the best day.” She hugged him tight. He returned her embrace.
“I am glad.” He murmured into her hair. He let her go and stroked the stray strands behind her ear. “I figured you wouldn’t want anything big.” His fingers lingered over the shell of her ear.
“How thoughtful.” She hummed. “So, why are we up here.” She turned and looked at the view. The afternoon light casting long shadows over Hogsmeade. The castle in the distance looked majestic in the autumn light.
“Sebastian said that you might enjoy the view.” Ominis replied. “He has been trying to plan a date with Poppy. But he hasn’t found a place he’d like to take her yet.”
“Hmmm, I have some ideas.” She would have to relay them later. There was a crack beside them. Tobbs appeared with a basket in hand.
“Care for a picnic?” Ominis smiled down at her.
“Sounds great, I’m starved.” Carina giggled.
Tobbs left them to eat. Carina gushed about all the clues Ominis left her. He admitted to enlisting Amit’s help to make them a touch more difficult to solve. As they finished up their food and repacked the picnic basket it vanished. A small stack of presents appeared in its place.
“I don’t need more things.” Carina grumbled. She had plenty from her days excursion.
Ominis rolled his eyes. He picked up the first package and handed it to her. It was from Flora and Charles. She untied the ribbon and lifted the lid to find a velvet box. She opened it revealing a dainty silver pocket watch attached to a necklace. The face encrusted with opals glimmered in the the late afternoon light.
“How lovely.” She murmured. She unclasped the necklace and turned her back to Ominis. “Help me with the clasp.” He took the necklace from her and smoothed her hair out of the way. His fingers grazed her neck as he fastened the clasp. She felt him lean forward. The soft warmth of his lips ghosted her neck making her shiver, goose flesh peppered her arms. “That tickles.” She giggled as she turned back to him, a gentle smile marked his face.
“Couldn’t help myself.” He reached for the next present. His brows knitting for just a moment. A present from him. Carina carefully pulled off the wrappings to find a wooden puzzle box.
“Oh, this looks so intriguing.” She felt along the edges, testing the dainty carved surface.
“You’ll solve it quickly I’m sure.” Ominis wore a soft expression as he watched her.
“Such faith in my ability to solve puzzles.” Carina hummed happily. She was able to slide a portion of the box. She clicked a square that loosened with the shift. The decorative face turned. She flipped the box and turned the other end counter clockwise. There was a click and the hinged lid popped open. Nestled inside the silk lining sat a dainty bracelet. Opal gems linked by silver chains with a silver token charm. She lifted the bracelet with much care. The constellations for Libra and Scorpio carved into the coins surface. “It’s beautiful.”
Ominis reached out and took the bracelet from her. He unfastened the clasp. Carina extended her wrist and watched as Ominis took great care to fasten it. He thumbed the delicate chain links and smiled. Ever so gently he lifted her right wrist and placed a chaste kiss to her pulse, his eyes glowing as he gazed up at her. Carina felt her breath catch in her throat at the gesture. She flushed as she tucked her hair behind her ear with her other hand. The spell was broken as Ominis released her to reach for the next present.
Carina untied the ribbon to the flat box from her mother. A silver necklace with a slim silver key. She furrowed her brow. There was no note. She looked over the slim key. The Malfoy crest made up the bow, the bit appeared too thin to turn any lock. “My mother is such a strange woman.” Carina looked to Ominis who shrugged. “Let me see your key.” Carina leaned over. She had the first two buttons of his shirt undone before he grabbed her wrists.
“Carina.” He admonished. Pink dusted his cheeks. She raised her brow.
“So you can undress me and put me in your pajamas, but I can’t unbutton your shirt?” She huffed as she attempted to wiggle her wrists from Ominis’ firm grip. She worried her lip with her teeth as she watched his thumb trace her new bracelet. He let out a long exhale and released her. He pulled his key and necklace from around his neck and handed it to her.
She inspected his key with the twisting snakes of the Gaunt crest. A slot along the top of the bow had Carina raising her brows. She took her key and inspected it. It was thin enough that it would fit. She slipped it into the slot. The bit creating an extra cut along the length of Ominis’ key. The keys clicked together seamlessly. Carina smiled up at Ominis. “Seems you’ll need both keys to unlock the vault.”
“Leave it to your mother to find a way to keep your dowry safe.” Ominis rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly.
Carina slipped the keys apart. She handed Ominis his back and slipped the long silver chain around her neck. She freed her hair. “I think mother worries for our future.” Carina sighed.
“I would think so.” Ominis murmured as he picked up the last present. His brow bowed as he inspected it. He held it out to her as if uncertain.
Carina took the present with a questioning glance. She untied the ribbon and took the lid off the box. An ornate dagger was nestled into the velvet interior, filigree covered the silver sheath. Carina nearly dropped the box with a gasp. She picked up the dagger with shaking fingers. It was just the right size to fit her palm, the hilt felt as if it was made specifically for her dainty hands. It was tradition… a blade given by the wizard who fancies you… a question. Carina looked to Ominis, she tried her best to keep her face neutral.
“It doesn’t have to mean anything, I have no expectations giving this to you.” Ominis had turned away from her. “It can just be a dagger for you to keep.” The tips of his ears were pink. She couldn’t hide her smile. She looked back down at the dagger.
“Answer me this.” Carina unsheathed the blade. The runic markings along the blade glimmered with whatever enchantment it was be spelled with. “Do you wish to court me?” She traced her finger along the razor sharp point.
He turned back to her. His expression soft, cheeks flushed. “I’d love nothing more.”
“Alright then.” She took his left hand and sliced into his palm. He winced, holding his hand up to her. She repeated the motion over her own palm. She sat up on her knees and laced her fingers through his. Their blood soaked hands pressed together. The droplets of their blood formed a red thread that looped around their linked fingers and hands “Then let this magic bind us.”
