Chapter Text
𝙎𝙩𝙖𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙖𝙩 𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙧𝙚𝙛𝙡𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 old, rusting mirror in the diner's bathroom, Lilian found herself thinking about what had led her up to this moment. Since she was little, she adored animals, so it was natural that she would've wanted to ride her father's horses. He taught her and Xander almost everything she knew about horse racing, and when they were old enough, they started actual horse racing. For five years, she was able to keep the illusion of her being male to the public. That was until she turned 18. Her body had slowly been maturing, but her chest had quickly got too difficult to hide underneath her clothing. After finishing in second place, a rank below Xander, which happens often, she had been approached by another racer.
"Are you a woman." The man had asked, surprising her. They were about to head back home when he had approached, which made the twins equally annoyed. "Yes-" Before she could finish her sentence, she had been punched. Xander had immediately fought the man, as Lilian shook against Bluebell, her Orlov Trotter horse. From that day on, for three years, they had taken a break from racing. They had enough money to be good for at least 5 years.
Or they did, until their father went and spent all of their money gambling, putting them into debt.
To say she was mad was an understatement, but she decided not to fight him. Their mother, a sweet woman named Anna, had spoken up after some minutes of silence. "Maybe y'all can try doing that Steel Ball Race...the prize money is more than that debt we owe." The twins shared a look, before Lilian sighed and looked at their mother. "It wouldn't hurt to give it a shot, I reckon." Xander nodded in agreement. It was settled, the Speedwagon Twins were going to make a comeback.
A soft shake at her shoulder woke her up. "Lily, get up. It's 30 minutes 'till it starts." The older twin said, stepping back to his side of the tent to gather his belongings. She yawned and sat up, rubbing her eyes. She pulled on the articles of clothing she sat beside her the previous night, before putting her belongings on Bluebell's saddle the way it's supposed to go, along with her bed roll.
She felt eyes on her and looked behind her. There were a few other racers staring at the duo as they put their stuff on their horses. "Ignore 'em.." Xander muttered. "You know that's hard for me, brother." Lilian replied, going back to what she was doing.
"Attention all participants, it is currently nine-thirty. Each of your numbers is your starting grid number. For fairness, please be at your corresponding grid by two minutes to ten."
She looked at Xander. "What's your grid number?" He looked at the paper before telling her. "C-532. You?" Lilian frowned. "Mine is B-289." They shared a moment of silence before Xander spoke up. "Stay aware of your surroundings, don't let anyone get to you." He said, his voice shaking slightly. He was nervous, he didn't want her to get overwhelmed by herself. "Let's try grouping together when its safe to, okay?" She said, holding his hand. "We can do this." Lilian said, side hugging him. He nodded, and put her hat on her head before putting on his. "Lets go."
He pulled Apollo gently out of his stable, who is also a beautiful white Orlov Trotter, with a grey behind before mounting him and waiting for his sister. Lilian mounted Bluebell, who was white with grey spots here and there, and adjusted how she sat before holding onto the reins and walking with her brother. Soon they parted ways, the older twin going further down the grids. Lilian came to a stop inside her grid, doing a few adjustments to her clothing, making sure her hat was on securely. After making sure she was situated, she glanced around, trying to see if she can spot Xander from where she was- she knew she couldn't, but she still attempted to.
Feeling Bluebell shift, she pet her mane. "We got this honey.." Lilian mumbled more to herself than to her horse. She felt the stare of other racers on her, and she glanced at them. "Hey...thats Speedy, ain't it?" One of them pointed out, sounding surprised. "..You mean that jockey who stopped racing when he-..she, was found out to be a-" The hushed whispers were interrupted by a loud noise.
The familiar sound of a firework was heard, and she held onto Bluebell's reins, leaning forward like she usually did during horse racing as she rushed ahead, quickly passing other horses around her.
"𝙇𝙚𝙩'𝙨 𝙜𝙤, 𝙡𝙚𝙩'𝙨 𝙜𝙤!"

The sounds of hooves behind her was familiar, but overwhelming at the same time. Obviously, they hadn't ran in a race this big before, so it was a lot for her. But Lilian kept her focus on the path in front of her, ignoring how some riders had fallen behind her. "Good girl, keep it up." She said, patting Blue's shoulder. She glanced to the side and saw some rider on a camel passing her. 'Woah-" Before she could steer Bluebell away from the rider, her horse had gotten scared and tried bucking Lilian off.
"No-! Calm down, Bluebell, its ok!" She said, holding onto the reins for dear life. The mare sprinted forward, continuing to occasionally attempt at bucking her rider off. Tears filled her eyes as she fought to stay on. "Speedy!" She heard a familiar voice and quickly glanced around. She spotted Xander, who was running up to her. Bluebell, now seeing Apollo, calmed down and slowed for Xander. Lilian shared a look with Xander before continuing to go down the path for the race.
Bluebell had a habit of bucking people off when she gets frightened, even if its something small. Even though that can be a death sentence to Lilian, she refused to replace her girl. Though, it doesn't change the fact it scares her when it happens. "Its okay honey, I'm fine." She pet the mare's mane, getting a small huff in return. The twins rode next to each other making sure to keep one another in their sights. She moved ahead, passing some riders with Xander following.
As she passed riders, she looked to the side and her eyes narrowed. The blonde-haired rider was very familiar, but she couldn't put her finger on it. She looked forward for a bit before turning back and locking eyes with him. Her face light up with recognition. "Well I'll be damned, if it aint Johnny Joestar." She smiled, and he looked at her silently, before raising an eyebrow. "...Do I know you?" Lilian's smile dropped. Oh, well that sucks. Instead of answering, she decided to pass him and keep going along. Xander followed, staring at the former jockey as he did so. He looked back in front of him after he passed. "On your left."
He said, passing her on her left. She nodded, staring ahead, noticing a wooden bridge. "..stay close." She told him, getting a nod in response. She threw a glance over her shoulder, noting other racers behind them, including the blonde. Lilian looked back in front of her. "How should we-" She started, unable to finish her sentence before another rider's horse kicked the bridge open. She held the reins tighter, mentally preparing herself for her crossing the stream. This was better than the bridge at least. After getting up and onto the other side, she continued on the path without her brother- he can catch up to her, so she isn't worried about that.
She wiped sweat off from her forehead that threatened to get in her eyes, before leaning forward as she had Bluebell speed up. She managed to pass some other riders, and got close to the one in first place. As soon as she started smiling, he suddenly swerved to the right. "What the.." She muttered.
"Gyro Zeppeli has gone off course to the right! He's going for a shortcut!"
After a beat, he pulled Apollo's reins towards the trees, following the other rider. Lilian followed him. "Followed by of the Speedwagon Twins!" Her eyes narrowed as she followed her brother, unphased by the branches. She focused on the path ahead of her. She felt the cool wind hitting her body, allowing herself to momentarily enjoy the feeling, before holding onto the reins as they approached a down hill section. "The downhill area is around fifty meters high, with steep angles of around thirty degrees in some areas!" She heard the announcer say, making her bite her lip.
"Damnit...go slow, Blue. Easy girl." She muttered, feeling racers catching up behind her. She finally merged back with the main group, and her brother next to her. "Howdy." She smiled, getting a small 'hey' in response. Lilian faced the hills in front of them, giving a glance to Johnny and Gyro, who seemed closer than before. She brushed it off, watching as two racers accelerated in front of everyone only to stumble and crash. Her eyes widen as she saw how bad it was. Their bodies flew into the air, a horse flying too, causing Xander to curse.
Lilian managed to move out of the way, but Xander wasn't as lucky. Apollo had gotten hit head on by the horse, causing his neck to break. Xander found himself stuck under both of the horse's bodies. Lilian gasped, and went back to him. The other racers had passed them all by now, but she didn't care. She hopped off of Blue, and ran over to help her brother out. "Are you hurt?!" She asked, pushing with all of her might to get the horse off of him. "Oh no! It looks like Wagon is stuck under his horse, good thing Speedy is helping him." She heard the announcers say, but she drowned out their voices.
"My leg.." He said, wincing as Lilian helped him up. She put him on the back of her horse, before putting his luggage on it too. She paused, leaning down to gently pet Apollo's head. "You did amazing...i'm sorry we cant stay longer hun..." She gave the stallion a kiss on his head before getting back on her horse. Xander let her put his leg securely on her saddle before holding onto her waist as she made Bluebell sprint as well as she can without hurting or exhausting her. "Keep going darling..i'll give you so many snacks when we get there, okay?" She said, fighting back tears. Behind her, Xander was sobbing into her shoulder.
The wind blew harshly against her face as the finish line came into view, she was surprised by how quickly they managed to catch up, but she wasn't mad about it. "Thank you Blue." She pat her shoulder. Bluebell whinnied in response and pushed forward, passing a few more racers.
"The twins are back!" One of the announcers said, pointing them out. She was now 20 meters away from Johnny and another blonde, who she paid no mind to. She felt Blue speed up and she worriedly squeezed her midriff. "Don't push yourself too hard, honey." She said.
In front of her, she could see Sandman, a racer who had been running with is own legs in front of Gyro, Johnny and the blonde, who she's assuming is called 'Dio' by his hat. She heard them announce 'Gyro Zeppeli' as the winner. She managed to catch up to the other two and passed the finish line.
She ignored how it felt off, and took Bluebell to her stable before carrying Xander to the medical tent. The sight was almost comical, if you didn't see how his leg looked She stepped inside and looked at a nurse. "Ma'am-" She said, getting her attention. As soon as the nurse saw them, she approached quickly. "Is this-" "Wagon, yes." Lilian nodded. She set him down on a bed and stood beside him as the nurse got to work.
Lilian watched, anxious about his well being. "..Lily." "Yes?" She looked at her brother. "Go, you need to hear the results." She hesitated. "..but-" "I'll be okay." He said, squeezing her hand. His hazel eyes locked onto hers, his usual hard gaze softening. "I promise." She stared worriedly for a moment, longer before sighing. "Alright.."

𝙁𝙤𝙡𝙡𝙤𝙬𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙗𝙧𝙤𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧'𝙨 𝙬𝙞𝙨𝙝𝙚𝙨, Lilian walked out of the medical tent and walked into the store- looking for some fruit. She picked up an apple, and looked at it, checking if it was still good. "By deliberation-" She perked up at the announcer's voice and walked to the cashier, putting down three apples. "Just these." She said, setting a hand on her hip. The cashier raised an eyebrow and glanced over her. His eyes seemed to narrow on the pants she wore. "Why are you wearing trousers." He said, going to his register to type in the amount she owed. She got quiet and put her hands by her sides.
"...its hard to ride horses in skirts." She muttered, giving him the money and grabbing her apples. "Maybe that should be proof enough as to why you women shouldn't be competing." Lilian paused as she turned to leave, before looking at him.
She contemplated snapping back at him, but deciding not to. She's supposed to be the nice twin, after all. "..maybe your right."
She said, before leaving the store. "..but because he disrupted Sandman during the race, he will incur a penalty." She bit back a smile, heading her way towards Bluebell. There were shouts of anger rippling through the air as she got to her girl and started fixing how the supplies held on her. "Don't worry darlin', i'll talk to Xander about what to do with his stuff for now.." Lilian mumbled, finding herself zoning out, her hand resting on Blue's hip.
She never thought for a moment that any of their horses would get injured, let alone killed. Maybe she is too hopeful, always ignoring the dangers in fear of them actually happening. She absent mindedly pet Bluebell, tears filling her hazel eyes. "...oh blue, i'm so sorry.." She mumbled, putting her head against her neck, earning a huff in return. Blue turned her head and licked her face, making Lilian laugh slightly and move her muzzle away. "I'm okay."
"..second place will be given to the Speedwagon Twins, who snuck in at the last second, third will be Diego Brando, fourth will be Pocoloco, and Mountain Tim, whose horse managed to sneak a nose in as well, is in fifth, sixth is Johnny Joestar, seventh will be Hot Pants.." Her eyes widened as she heard her name, and she felt a few stares from the people around her, making her blush with embarrassment. She pulled her hat down slightly to hide her face. She wasn't used to the spotlight, not after five years of being hidden and especially after her true gender was revealed.
Blue stared at Lilian, until the girl sighed and looked at Blue. "Alrighty girl, i got you those treats i promised. " She broke one of the apples in thirds, before feeding her one at a time. "I wonder if pa let momma come.." The statement made Blue whinny in excitement, making Lilian laugh. "What, you want to see your grandma?"
Her laughing was interrupted by a cork hitting her in the jaw, knocking her back. She fell on the ground, holding her jaw as pain blossomed through it. She fell to the side, landing on her right shoulder as she clutched her jaw. She had to stop herself from curling up into the fetal position just from the pain. Soon she felt hands touching her body, trying to help her up. She opened her eyes slightly, her vision focusing on Johnny's baby blue eyes, and a pair of annoyed green ones that belonged to Gyro.
"Stop babying him Johnny, he'll live," Gyro muttered, crossing his arms. "If he stopped hiding his face in that scarf-" "Wait..No, i recognize you now." Johnny said, interrupting the long haired blonde- angering him in the process. "Your one of the jockey's i also used to race." He stated, momentarily making Gyro pause his angered yelling. "Took you long enough.." Lilian mumbled, pulling down her scarf to spit out the blood and a molar that had gotten knocked out of her mouth.
"I didn't really read the newspapers to know the reason, but why did you and Wagon quit racing?" Johnny asked, making Lilian stare at him for a moment. She blinked a few times before laughing. "Wait- are you serious?" She asked, making Johnny nod. "A hundred percent."
She sighed when she finished laughing. "They found out I'm a woman, so we hid from the public." Johnny looked surprised, before nodding slightly. "Now that you said that it makes more sense. Why you cried so easily after races, I mean."
