Chapter 1: Mission Gone Wrong
Chapter Text
None of this was supposed to be happening. Kakashi would admit that he deserved to take some of the blame, especially when the outcome was more than undesirable.
"You idiot, duck!"
"As if you're one to talk!"
It was supposed to be a simple escort mission, to help this bridge builder in the most simplest way possible. Now? Now his three genin were facing a life-and-death situation much earlier than he had hoped. He had grown attached to the three, dammit, and now he was fearing for their safety? How could he not? He knew damn well that his heart and facade would not bode well with his new team. There was Naruto, his own teacher's son. He was the spitting image of both Minato and Kushina. He was loud and obnoxious, but he was true to himself and his beliefs. He reminded him so much of Obito, it hurt. So how could he not be fond of the boy?
How could he not be fond of Sasuke? The little Uchiha was so much like Kakashi, it scared him sometimes. The hurt, the pain, the anger, the confusion, all of it was familiar to Kakashi. It was familiar to Sasuke. The loss that the two were forced to face at such young ages was agonizing. He couldn't help but want to reach out to the boy, to let him know that he would be okay. He wanted to let him know that he wasn't alone, that he had a team who cared for him, flaws and all. Still, those little moments where Sasuke would let out an amused snort or smirk when Naruto acted dumb, or when Sakura said or did something amusing. The small smile that broke across the boy's features when Naruto seemed to understand his silence was so much like the boy's mother. The soft expression on the boy's face when he was having a bad day, and Sakura would just sit and keep him company in silence was so much like the boy's father. They would have been proud of him, just as Kakashi was.
Then there was Sakura. What was there to say about his little kunoichi? She was intelligent, no question about it. He was sure that she was the smartest of his kids. She also had low chakra reserves, but that only convinced him that she would have no problems mastering it. It was, after all, partially why he had a little tree exercise planned for his kids. He was sure that she'd be the first to master it, to help motivate the boys to do the same. She reminded him of Rin, it really hurt sometimes. He knew that, with the dynamic he's uncovered so far, she could be the very thing the boys needed to stay grounded. Still, he wanted nothing more than to keep her safe and away from all missions. He wouldn't let her down, not like he did with Rin.
Oh, how he really wished he could keep that promise.
"Look out!"
He was quick to throw a kunai at the enemy headed straight for Naruto. Sakura stayed on defense, doing her best to keep the bridge builder safe. Sasuke was the closest to Sakura, working on keeping her and the builder away from harm. It was when Naruto, while avoiding a nin, bumped into Sasuke that things went south. Poor Naruto was panicing, unsure of what to do. Sasuke turned to snap at his teammate, but was interupted when Sakura scream.
"SASUKE-KUN! NARUTO! LOOK OUT!"
Both boys turned to look at her, the horror evident in her eyes. They followed her gaze up to see a third nin jumping down on them.
Straight for them.
With a kunai in each hand.
"Move!"
It all happened in slow-motion for Kakashi, thanks to his eye. He felt helpless as he watched it all happen, his hands full with two different ninja. Sakura bolted forward, a determined look in her eyes. Both Sasuke and Naruto gasped as they were pulled back by the pinkette, who had a firm grip on the collars of their shirts. The two hit the ground just as the young kunoichi brought her fist back, readying a punch. The attacker seemed momentarily surprised before moving to rearrange their attack. A scroll slipped out of the ninja's holder, opening just as Sakura threw her punch. A singular smoke bomb had slipped, hitting the ground before Sakura and the attacker made contact with one another. Smoke filled the air just as a scary and deadly CRACK was heard. Kakashi couldn't find his voice, but his boys did.
"Sakura!"
"Sakura-chan! Are you okay?!"
Naruto was scrambling to stand up, panic written all over his face. Sasuke was already on his feet, weapon drawn as he tried to search through the smoke, worry swimming in his eyes.
"Sakura! Answer me!"
Kakashi finished with his ninja, hurrying over as he finally spoke up.
"Sakura!"
The smoke eventually cleared, making all three pause in confusion and shock. Naruto scrunched his face in disgust, sticking his tongue out as he stared at the sight before him.
"Aw, gross! That's sick! Why is he twisted like that?"
Kakashi didn't even know how to respond. If he weren't a skilled ninja himself, he was sure he'd be as grossed out as Naruto was. After all, seeing so much blood in such a way could be traumatizing.
"How…?"
The ninja was dead, there was no question about it. His body was all twisted, blood trailing out of his mouth. The most blood, however, was on his stomach. Or, at least, what was left of it. A small, fist-sized hole had been made in the man, a giant pool of blood surrounding his body. Splatters of blood were on the nearby trees, rocks and ground. The scroll was left on the ground, now dull in color and covered in blood. The man's kunai were both stuck on the ground. It was truly a sight to behold, something Kakashi never thought he'd see, much less on a C-Rank mission.
"…!"
Kakashi staggered as Sasuke pushed him back, kneeling down in front of the kunai. He stayed like that for a moment before standing up. His gaze was firm as he looked around, panic in his eyes. It was Naruto who broke the silence, confused.
"Sasuke, what are you-?"
"Sakura? Sakura, where are you?"
Kakashi and Naruto's eyes widened as Sasuke turned to them, holding up strands of pink hair. The Uchiha heir didn't even wait to see their reactions, still calling out as he began to walk around the perimeter.
"Sakura! Answer me! Where are you?!"
Kakashi felt a pit form in his gut as he watched both boys call out for their missing teammate. He brought his hands up to his masked mouth, joining them in calling for the pinkette.
"Sakura!"
"SAKURA-CHAN!!!"
"Sakura! Where are you?!"
Kakashi was really beginning to feel as if this was all his fault. He should have never compared her to Rin.
Chapter 2: Wherever We Are
Summary:
Sakura sure doesn't know where the heck she ended up.

"Shanna-"
"-ro?! Woah!"
Sakura fell face-first into the ground before her. She spat out the dirt that ended up in her mouth, clearly disgusted. It only took her a second, however, for her to realize her new situation.
"Sasuke-kun? Naruto? Sensei? Hello?"
The young kunoichi quickly brought herself to her feet, dusting off the dirt from her outfit. It only took a few swipes for her to realize that something was wrong. Peering down, she gasped as she let out a small shriek.
"Kyah!"
She jumped back, horror in her eyes as she stared down at her right hand. Blood covered her entire forearm, small bits of skin and muscle stuck on it. Her dress and legs were splattered with blood and bits of human, and she was pretty sure that she could see bits stuck in her hair. She could only presume that her face was in a similar state. She felt the urge to throw up, her body lurching in disgust and horror as she began to gag. She eventually gave in, puking whatever was left in her stomach before groaning. Tears filled her eyes as she sniffled, spitting out as much of the leftover vomit before wiping her mouth with the back of her "clean" hand. Taking a few breaths, she looked turned to look at her surroundings.
"How…?"
She was surprised to see that she was no longer in the forest with the others. No, she was, instead, surprised to find herself in a meadow. Letting out a few coughs, she grimaced as the taste of vomit was strong in her mouth. Doing her best to not throw up again, she slid off her backpack and grabbed her water. She used a bit to wash out her mouth before taking inventory of what she had. Slipping on her backpack again, she sighed as she tied her hair back, grimacing as she felt the drying blood.
"Okay, Sakura, don't panic. It's okay, you're okay, we're okay-"
"Okay? You've lost your damn mind! We don't even know where we are!"
"Shut up!"
Sakura hissed back at the voice in her head, shaking her head in annoyance. Sighing, she frowned as she held onto the straps of her bag, deciding to walk in a random direction.
"Panicking isn't going to save us."
"Neither is running fist-first to a deadly enemy, yet you still did that."
"Hey, you supported that idea!"
"I didn't support you bringing us to a strange place!"
"Wha- I didn't! This wasn't me! I'm just as confused and freaked out as you are! But the sooner we find a way out of here, the sooner we can find the others. Any complaints?"
She was met with silence, the voice in her head not responding. Nodding in approval, Sakura continued to walk. It took her ten minutes before she stopped, staring down at the brick path before her.
"What the hell?"
"What are you waiting for? Just follow the road."
"What happened to having survival instincts?"
"This situation doesn't count."
"I feel like this situation is the perfect scenario where it counts. However, given the fact that we have nowhere else to go, I'll follow it."
So, swallowing her fear, the small pinkette wore a determined face before going down the path.
