Chapter Text
The One with the Pregnancy Test
It had been a chaotic year.
Well chaotic was an understatement.
But what other word more suitable to describe a year where:
- The Honmoon was slowly starting to turn cold
- A demon boy band, the Saja Boys, made their debut with Soda Pop, gaining their own fandom ‘Join the Pride’ and trying to basically defeat the Huntrix
- Jinu learnt Rumi was part demon
- The Honmoon started to weaken from the Saja Boys’ growing popularity
- Multiple missing people cases
- Bobby arranging a meet and greet which the Saja Boys decided to hijack
- A train of people going missing
- Rumi and Jinu getting closer
- Soda Pop everywhere
- Gwi Maa getting mad with Rumi and Jinu being close
- Takedown being leaked and Rumi being exposed as a demon
- A brief Huntrix breakup
- ‘Your Idol’ almost taking everyone’s souls
- ‘This is what it sounds like’ reuniting Huntrix and turning the Saja Boys against Gwi Maa - defeating Gwi Maa, creating a new Honmoon
Yeah a chaotic year.
But post the events, everything had changed, maybe for the better. Rumi had finally learnt how to relax and not always be in control. She didn’t need to hide. She didn’t need to always keep working to distract herself.
She had her girls, her manager who was basically the ultimate girl’s dad, a cute blue tiger with OCD, a sassy sarcastic judgemental bird and….Jinu.
They had been dating in secret for a year now. Well - Bobby knew. Mira and Zoey obviously knew because they agreed no more secrets. The Saja Boys knew - by accident since Abby walked in on Rumi and Jinu and screamed like a dumbass, so everyone in the boys’ shared apartment heard and found out. Bobby had to force them all to sign an NDA because that man did not trust those demons. Not one bit. Though Bobby did love Jinu. Basically his son-in-law.
But besides them, the fans didn’t know.
Probably for the best since fans went crazy when their favorite idols started to date.
There were multiple incidents in the industry when idols started to date - it ranged from hurtful comments to even harassment and in worst case scenarios stalking.
Like poor Katrina when she announced her relationship and some of her fans actually drove a truck to her management agency.
Or when ECHO9’s member Lee Beom-seok was caught kissing actress Park Ahnjong and the internet imploded, with fans burning his photocards and trending #BeomseokOut for weeks.
So yeah, probably for the best.
Zoey and Mystery were also dating for a few months now, they started to date a couple months after Rumi and Jinu did. Like the two, they were also keeping the relationship on the down-low with only the inner circle knowing.
But other than two secret relationships; everything was perfect. Rumi had never felt more at peace until now.
Famous last words.
…
It was late in the evening in Seoul. The Huntrix had done their final rehearsal before their tour started on Monday. Which meant a whole weekend of relaxing and couch.
“Couch! Couch! Couch! Couch! Couch! Couch!!”
Mira and Zoey exclaimed in unison, dressed in their robes and carrying bowls of snacks before falling onto their beloved couch.
Rumi finally came after they had settled down, taking her seat. She would have done the whole couch chant earlier, but she had a phone call with Jinu to make sure he wasn’t being stupid or Abby wasn’t making him do anything stupid, given that the Saja boys decided to take on Apgujeong - what they were doing, she had no clue.
Okay so she didn’t actually check on Jinu to make sure he wasn’t being stupid - although that was included in the conversation. Jinu was the one who called her to make sure she was going to relax with Mira and Zoey, and not work.
“I missed couch so much,” Rumi said, settling into the pile of couch cushions.
“Same, rehearsals have made me exhausted!” Zoey replied, digging into a box of Swedish Fish - her dad had sent a box of American candy a couple days ago, fresh from the States since he knew how much Zoey and the girls loved the authentic stuff. “Where are Derpy and Sussie by the way?”
“Bobby has them tonight,” Rumi said as she grabbed her pack of Hershey’s Kisses. “He loves those two like his own kids.”
Mira chuckled “literally, at least we can relax without worrying if Sussie is going to bully Derpy for knocking over a trashcan.”
The girls chuckled before turning their attention on the screen where Zoey had put together a playlist of 2-second videos of dolphins. She had quite an obsession with sea animals.
It was quiet and peaceful for a bit.
Just Rumi, Mira and Zoey chilling on the couch, no stress about the upcoming tour, a spread of American candy and of course Korean candy included too since Rumi and Mira were in love with Choco Pies and just the general serenity of the moment.
Until….
“Okay so this is a safe place to talk about anything right?” Zoey asked, sounding serious, biting the bottom of her lip as she paused the TV.
Rumi and Mira nodded, prompting Zoey to go on.
Zoey took a deep breath and then spoke “okay so I think I’m pregnant.”
“WHAT?!”
Mira choked on her bite of Choco Pie whilst Rumi started coughing on her Hershey’s Kiss.
Zoey raised her hands defensively. “Okay, okay, don’t freak out. I’m not saying I am , I’m just saying… my period’s been late for like… three weeks now. And, y’know… Mystery and I are… uh… pretty active.”
Mira blinked. “Define ‘pretty active.’”
Zoey gave her a look. “Mira, I’m not drawing you diagrams.”
Rumi tilted her head. “Zoey, it could just be stress. We’ve had rehearsals, travel, practice, practice, practice, promo - your body’s probably just tired.”
Zoey chewed her lip. “Maybe… but now I’m curious. When did you guys last have yours?”
Mira shrugged. “Well, I’m on the pill, so I can skip mine whenever I want. Haven’t had it in months - on purpose.”
Rumi, without missing a beat, unwrapped another Hershey’s Kiss. “I’ve been late for two months.”
The room went dead silent.
Then -
“ TWO. MONTHS?! ” Zoey and Mira screeched in unison.
Rumi waved them off. “Relax, it’s probably just stress from the upcoming tour.” She popped the chocolate into her mouth like it was no big deal.
Zoey stared at her. “Girl, you can’t just casually drop that and act like it’s about your schedule .”
Mira was already on her phone. “Nope. Nope. I’m ordering a test. Or five. Coupang same-day delivery. Hold still, I’m adding three different brands - ”
“-and I’m getting you a giant bottle of water,” Zoey added, already heading for the kitchen.
Rumi sighed, burying her face into her hands, mumbling “guys we don’t need to do this. I’m not pregnant.”
Zoey came back with a water bottle - three water bottles as she said “better safe than sorry. And Mira and I are also going to take a test in solitude because I want to double check to make sure I’m not pregnant.”
Mira had just made the order when she let out a groan. “I am definitely not pregnant.”
“And how many one night stands have you had recently? The pill isn’t 100% effective, you know.”
“Fine I’ll take one - only to be supportive.” Mira said, now waiting by the door for the parcel.
Rumi was quiet now. There was no way she could be pregnant. She was only 24 - she was still young. Her career was going so well. Everything was going so well. Throwing a baby in the mix would mess up everything.
Besides, she and Jinu had been careful. She wasn’t on the pill like Mira, but Jinu always used protection and in some cases where he forgot to restock or bring one to her place then he had a good pull-out game.
She could definitely not be pregnant.
…
An hour later, the water bottles were empty and the parcel had been delivered. Mira clearly had Coupang wrapped around her tiny finger for it to arrive faster than some pizza places.
The three of them sat staring at the box of tests like it might explode.
Zoey broke the silence. “Okay… we all know how this works. Everyone gets their assigned bathroom. No peeking, no swapping, no commentary.”
Mira raised an eyebrow. “Is this a pregnancy test or the Hunger Games?”
Zoey ignored her and shoved a box into Rumi’s hands. “Yours.”
Rumi groaned. “Guys, this is ridiculous.”
“Rumi, just take the damn test,” Mira said, already walking toward the hallway. “If it’s negative, we can all laugh, order fried chicken, and move on. If it’s positive-”
“It’s not going to be positive!” Rumi interrupted.
Zoey ignored her completely, continuing “and after we all pee on the test, we meet at my bathroom, the tests turned upside down, we set a timer and then when the timer goes off we all turn the tests over - sounds good?”
Rumi and Mira just mumbled a yes. They were not interested in this at all.
…
A couple minutes later, true to Zoey’s plan, Mira and Rumi were at her en-suite with the tests upside down. Zoey set up a timer for 3 minutes on her phone, then looked at the girls.
“It’s going to be okay guys,” Zoey said, hugging the two.
Rumi and Mira hugged her back. Rumi didn’t know if it was going to be okay though. Being pregnant a year into the relationship, outside of marriage especially as a K-Pop idol - her relationship wasn’t even public yet.
The timer went off and the girls turned the tests, only looking at their individual test for their eyes only, but before anyone could actually register the results and tell the others…
“Hey girls, we thought to drop by with Buldalk!”
The boys!
Mira immediately grabbed the tests, still upside down and chucked them in Zoey’s empty trashcan. They'd have to check again the Saja boys left.
“Look normal guys,” Mira whisper-yelled as she ushered the girls out of the en-suite only to find all five guys outside.
“Who let you into my room?” Zoey asked, crossing her arms, trying to act as normal as possible.
Abby crossed his arms back, his muscles struggling to stay in his shirt sleeves, “a better question is why are you three all in an en-suite together?”
“Were you three making out in there?” Romance joked, “because if so, we support it.”
Baby just rolled his eyes, clearly not bothered with this conversation. Mystery simply sighed, leaning against the wall as he finally spoke up “well?”
“Even if we were making out, which we weren’t, what’s it to you guys?” Mira asked, giving a side eye to everyone.
“Hey, we just wanted to know,” Abby said, raising his hands, “Jinu, you’ve been quiet. You going to say something?”
Jinu, who had been quiet since he had come into Zoey’s room, finally spoke “you girls are hiding something.”
“No we’re not,” the three said in unison.
Jinu narrowed his eyes, signing Abby to follow him into the en-suite. Zoey grabbed Jinu’s arm whilst Mira grabbed Abby’s arm, attempting to pull them back.
“I do not give you permission to go into my bathroom!” Zoey shouted, hanging off Jinu’s arm like an anchor. Mira had both hands on Abby, heels digging into the carpet.
Abby glanced down at her. “Mira, you weigh like a feather. This isn’t working.” He lifted her out of the way like she was a cat.
“Abby, I swear-” Mira started, but he and Jinu had already slipped past into the en-suite.
“Don’t you dare touch anything in there!” Zoey yelled after them.
There was silence for a beat. Then the faint rustle of a plastic bag. A pause.
And then Jinu’s voice, sharp and flat:
“…Okay. Who’s pregnant?”
The room froze.
Zoey’s jaw dropped. Mira’s eyes went wide. Rumi’s stomach dropped to the floor.
The boys stepped into the bedroom with the girls following them, Jinu holding up the bin with the three used tests visible inside. Abby’s expression was somewhere between shock and delight, clearly ready for the drama.
Jinu’s eyes scanned the three of them, lingering on Rumi just a second too long.
“Well?”
“So I would like to confirm it is not me,” Mira said quickly, pointing a finger at the trash like it was a crime scene. “And this is why, ladies, we go on the pill. Anyone wishing to go on the pill, I’ll hook you up with my gynac.”
Zoey crossed her arms, glancing at the boys. “Not me either. Mystery, before you start sweating, I’m fine.”
Mystery blinked, halfway through opening his mouth, then closed it again. “…Okay. Good to know.”
That left one person.
Everyone turned to Rumi.
She sat very still, eyes locked on the far wall like if she didn’t make eye contact, she could actually disappear.
“Rumi,” Jinu said slowly, his voice somewhere between concerned boyfriend and detective in a drama. “Is there something you want to tell me?”
Mira and Zoey exchanged a look. They already knew - they’d seen their own results. And Rumi’s face, right now? It was confirmation enough.
Rumi finally blinked, forcing a laugh that sounded about as real as a plastic plant. “Uh… maybe we should talk about this later? Like not in front of an entire demon boy band?”
Abby grinned like Christmas had come early. “Oh no, I need to hear this now.”
“Abby.” Mystery’s voice was low, warning.
Baby groaned. “I hate drama nights.”
Jinu didn’t move. His eyes were still locked on her. “Rumi.”
Her throat felt dry. “It’s…probably just stress,” she tried again.
But the way Zoey buried her face into her hands and Mira muttered “oh my god” under her breath…made it pretty clear that nobody in the room believed her.
Mira broke the silence, clapping her hands like a teacher trying to get a rowdy classroom under control.
“Okay. Here’s the thing. I ordered a lot of tests. Like… bulk deal levels. So, Rumi, just take another. Could be a false positive.”
Zoey nodded vigorously. “Yeah! Science! Percentages! Statistics!”
Abby tilted his head. “Wait, so you are saying she’s…”
“Nope!” Rumi interrupted, standing up so fast she almost knocked over a bowl of Swedish Fish. “We are not having this conversation in front of you lot.”
Jinu didn’t budge. “Rumi - ”
She pointed at him. “Later.”
Mira was already rummaging in the shopping bag. “Bathroom. Now. I’ve got a SmileCheck, a WONDFO, some off-brand one that promises ‘results in one minute,’ and….ooh and this digital one that literally says the word ‘pregnant’ so there’s no reading lines or guessing.”
Rumi groaned, but Mira shoved the box into her hands and physically turned her toward the en-suite. “March. Pee. Prove us all wrong.”
“Yeah, because nothing says ‘romantic Friday night’ like urinating under pressure,” Rumi muttered, disappearing into the bathroom.
Behind her, the boys immediately started whispering like middle schoolers.
“What if she is?” Romance asked.
Mystery’s jaw tightened. “If she is, it’s none of our business.”
Abby smirked. “It’s somebody’s business - ”
Zoey threw a Choco Pie at him. “Shut. Up.”
As for Rumi, the moment she shut the door behind her, the mutters and chatters died down. Kind of. Abby had a loud voice and she could hear Jinu telling him to be quiet.
Rumi sat on the closed toilet lid for a moment, the unopened test resting in her lap. Her hands felt cold.
She didn’t want to open it. Didn’t want to see those little pink lines again.
Her head felt heavy, thoughts buzzing too loud to pin down - the tour, the fans, Bobby’s face when he found out…though he would be more supportive buying out three whole baby stores but Celine…oh god she did not think about Celine till now, Jinu’s reaction, etc. The walls felt smaller.
Still, she tore the foil open, her fingers clumsy, and did what she had to do.
The minutes stretched like hours. She set the test face-down on the counter and gripped the edges of the sink, breathing slowly, in through the nose, out through the mouth. She’d done this earlier tonight, the same three minutes, but somehow this time felt different. More final.
When the timer on her phone chimed, she hesitated.
She flipped it over.
Two pink lines. Clear. Unmistakable.
Her vision blurred before she realized her eyes were wet. She pressed her palm to her mouth, a small, shaky sound escaping…not quite a sob, not quite a laugh, just something raw in between.
There was a soft knock at the door.
“Rumi?”
His voice.
She froze.
Another knock, gentler this time.
“Can I come in?”
Her throat ached. “It’s… it’s not locked,” she managed, barely louder than a whisper.
The door opened slowly, and there he was - Jinu, framed in the warm hallway light, worry etched in his face. She couldn’t see anyone else with him so he must have told them to get out. His eyes searched hers, then dropped to the little white stick trembling in her hand.
She didn’t need to say a word.
He stepped forward, closing the door behind him. She thought maybe he’d be shocked, or speechless, or angry, but instead, his arms came around her, steady and certain, pulling her against his chest.
Her forehead pressed into the curve of his shoulder, and that was all it took - the tears came freely now, hot and relentless.
“I don’t know what to do,” she whispered, her voice breaking.
Jinu’s hand smoothed over her hair, his other arm holding her like he’d never let go.
“We’ll figure it out,” he murmured, his voice low and steady. “You’re not doing this alone, Rumi. I’m here. Always.”
For the first time that night, she let herself lean into him fully, the little stick still clutched between her fingers, the reality settling in with each heartbeat.
They were going to be parents.
And somehow, in the middle of all the fear, his arms made it feel just a little less impossible.
