Chapter 1: Yew new, new beginnings
Chapter Text
Oj woke up at around five in the morning as per usual. He forced himself up and out of the comfort of the warm bed just so he could go and endure suffering with a bunch of high school kids that were most likely going to be hard to manage, after all it was like that every year. He walked over the smooth and rather cold floorboards of his and his fiancés home to the bathroom to freshen up. Looking in the mirror nowadays was a scare, he had dark eye bags from constant work and stress even over the summer. He brought his hands over the sink and turned on the water to a chilly temperature. Splashing cool water on his face knowing that it makes him feel a little more alive when he looked the opposite, especially when he’s just woken up. Oj washed his face and brought a brush through his curly, bright- almost orange- ginger hair. It was shaved at the sides and at the top of his head sat his locks.
From the open door he could see Paper slowly awaking. They both worked at the same damn school just different jobs. Oj was a math teacher while Paper worked in the office area. Even though their occupations prevented them from seeing each other often it was still nice to visit during breaks, after all his boss didn’t know about the fact that the two were an item.
Mr. Steve Cobs was the principal at the place he worked. Cobs was a rather… opinionated person, he was the type of guy that would give you harsh criticism on your work, end up going too far with the rude comment, then tell you it was a joke, no harm no foul. He’d done it to Oj a few times but bit his tongue about it. It was his boss after all, and they were rather close, not at all because he liked Steve in any way, it just felt like more of an obligation when they talked with each other or visited each other for corny barbecues at coworkers houses, being neighbours with each other also wasnt a huge bonus. Although, he preferred it over the idea of a higher up-especially someone like Cobs- being angry at him, their ‘friendship’ at least, spared him from some of the cruel words that spewed out of Steve’s mouth. Paper, however, was different. He absolutely hated the guy and cared less if he knew that or not- in fact it was obvious the hatred went both ways. One of the only reasons Paper was still working there was because Oj always made sure to put in a good word for his lover. His almost- husband was a little bit less reserved and often called Cobs out for his unnecessary feedback, which of course angered the other. Paper, again, only tolerated his boss for Ojs sake, not wanting to drag the ginger down with him.
“Mm..” Paper mumbled with a drawled out groan, his voice still groggy from sleep. Oj walked over to him, now dressed in his work clothes.
“Morning Paper,” Ojs said, his words sweet with love for his partner.
“Morning,” the other said with a raspy tone, “What’s the time?” He asked, the sentence laced with slight concern of him sleeping in on his first day of work back from the holidays . Oj checked his phone from the desk top.
“Uhh- it’s only five thirty.”
Paper shot up all of a sudden wide awake.
“Five thirty!? Oj why didn’t you wake me up? We have to be at the school in like-“ he took a pause calculating the damage of sleeping in an extra thirty minutes would cause, “an hour!” He cried.
“Hey- it’s all good,” his fiancé said, trying to sooth him. “I’ll whip some coffee and toast up, you get ready, then we’ll be on our way- no stress,” it was a little hypocritical when Oj told people to relax or calm down when he himself lost multiple hours of sleep worrying about the dumbest things.
“Besides you deserve the rest Paper.” He said with a softening smile. He was right of course, the days leading up to today were always busy with getting preparations ready for the new year but then again Oj has never been one to get a good rest either. Spending most his nights staring at the ceiling with a fascination like no other until it was somewhat of a reasonable time to wake up.
“Oj it’s fine I can make my own breakfast,” Paper told the other, not wanting to add the chore of tossing bread in the toaster to Ojs to-do list.
“It’s fine- I mean it, now you get ready,” he leaned down to Papers head and gave a light peck and not even a second later Oj was speed walking out of the room with a pink blush that stood out against his freckles. They’ve dated for six years, engaged for one, and had been crushing on each other for an unholy amount of time before that, still, however, Oj got flustered with almost every gesture. Especially the ones that he initiated, not being super educated in relationships despite the fact that they’ve been together for a while.
Paper gave a a chuckle- he of course thought Ojs whole thing was cute.
He rolled out bed and started getting ready for the day.
A bright stream of sunlight shone through the window of Mephone4s dusty room accompanied by the blaring alarm that was going off. He had been awake for a few hours but couldn’t bring himself to start getting up. The alarm, however, snapped him out of his trance. Four grabbed his phone that lied down on the night stand and took a look. The screen read ‘6:26’. His dad had most likely already left for work. He tore the covers off him and dragged his feet down the stairs to get food.
On the kitchen table, his eldest brother, 3GS, sat there absentmindedly taking sips of coffee. His sibling looked up at him from one of the chairs. “Hey Mephone- by the way there’s cereal in the cupboard if you’re looking for something to eat.” He took a closer look at the other, “did you even sleep?” He asked the younger one.
“Uh yea, don’t worry about it,” Mephone told him, very clearly half awake. In fact during the summer it felt like that was all he did do, just lying in bed as the slow hours ticked by, not having the energy to get up. That’s one of the reasons why he was not looking forward to starting up classes again and it would be the first time he started the school year without his twin, 4S.
He’s in the hospital because he had fallen through ice. Around winter time the two were just playing until they both went under- Mephone got out fine but 4S ended up in the emergency room with monitors on every corner of the place stuck in a coma. Just the thought of the memories with that incident and all the years before where they both would get on the bus and spend the time just talking to each other about almost anything it reminded him of somthing.
He missed it. More than he wanted to.
“If you say so.” 3GS replied, snapping Four out of it. He got out his cereal and started to eat the dry crispy food, not bothering with the milk, in his opinion it was better that way. The older one glanced at the others bowl then at him who was eating it as if it was popcorn and gave a soft smile. It was rare to see Three happy and had been this way for quite a bit, he always seemed so distant no matter the conversation. Although recently he’d been a little bit more present which was good. Still though he didn’t blame the other for being so out of it. Their dad wasn’t exactly easy to please and that showed with his high expectations.
Mephone4 was the youngest besides his twin. Which meant that all these years of good grades and excellent scores on everything was now pushed on to him. Although he wasn’t like 3GS or Mepad. he was more imaginative and in the clouds, and the only other person who had understood that, understood him, was 4S. Who obviously wasn’t here right now.
The two of them looked up when they saw Mepad slowly enter the dining room in his usual neat vest and slacks. Four grimaced, now remembering that he was just in his pyjamas.
“Morning,” Mepad called out to them. Heading over to the counter to grab a cup of coffee, his morning rituals were always so scheduled Mephone wouldn’t be surprised if the other followed a script insides his head.
“Hey Mepad,” Three replied.
In a way the two older ones were similar, both very organised and methodical, knew what they had to do and did it no questions asked. So why couldn’t Mephone do it too. Why did he have to be the weak link in a family of stars. Mepad excelled in mathematics being put in the highest class possible for his age and 3GS was now studying in business, and talking about taking over dad’s old tech business. Four was positive that 4S would’ve also achieved somthing that made Cobs proud. And him…nothing. Unless you counted the dumb doodles that he made, or at least that’s what his father thought of them as.
He gave a wave to the other then went back to eating his makeshift breakfast he’d thrown together. Mepad checked his watch and gave Mephone a look. “Are you all ready?” The watch read 7:25. In five minutes the bus would make its usual round and come pick them up.
He couldn’t believe how fast the time went. He was used to the slow summer days of him rotting in his bed with nothing to do. Just wanting the clock to move slightly faster so we could just so he could go back to sleep another eleven hours. But now he was doing things. He’d have to be doing things for the next few months of school. The weight of the realisation was already draining him, thinking about the long nights ahead of him studying for tests he knew he would fail, and the constant homework, always having to keep up with grades and his fathers looks of disapproval before yelling at him until Mephone4 felt the familiar pain in his throat from holding back tears then the sharp echo of skin hitting skin that came from his own fathers hand and the pain etching its way across his face.
“Uhm, I’ll go get ready now.” He climbed out of his chair and up to his bed room that was full of posters about bands, artist, video games, and shows he watched. Those were good distractions from what happens in his reality.
He put on some clothes and gave a brush through his shaggy jet black hair that almost looked blue in the light. He gave a look at himself in his body mirror. He had on a pair of dull, dark blue jeans, a navy top, and the first jacket he pulled out of his closet. Definitely not the cleanest outfit, especially compared too his sibling, but who cares. Just in time he heard Three call up to him that the bus was there. He grabbed his phone and backpack then rushed out the door where Mepad was patiently waiting for him.
Chapter 2: A Favour
Summary:
Oj walked into the building until Mr. Cobs stopped him to ask him a favor regarding one of his sons, Mephone4.
Mephone drags his feet through the class room doors and enters with Mepad. He didn’t deserve to be there not like Mepad did. The day just seems to be getting slower the more he wants it to end.
Notes:

Chapter Text
Oj grabbed the handle of the double door that lead into the large building. He opened it up letting his partner walk through and was greeted with the smell of coffee and someone’s far too strong perfume. At the front desk chatting to one of the teachers was Suitcase. She was familiar to the both of them.
She had on a long layered skirt that touched her ankles, a light beige dress shirt, and a sweater that had the seams of a warm yellow. She had her hair up in two messy buns that hung on her shoulder that were paired with the same yellow tied in bows attached to the hair bands. Suitcase was the counsellor of the school and a good one at that. She just had that vibe to her, she could make someone calm with just a few soothing words. She was also good at getting to the point both during her job when talking to students and when voicing her concerns on other things. She turned around hearing the small bell on the door make it’s rather annoying dinging noise (Ik this isnt a connivence store but idc- H0wdy). “Oj! Paper!” She exclaimed, her face scrunching up from the joy of being able to see the two again.
“Hey suitcase! How’ve you been?” Oj responded, it had definitely due for some catch up time. Oj and suitcase first met when she took over as the new high school president back when the they were younger. He had been going into college so he taught her the ropes. Years later they met again right here in the same room, crazy to think how many years had already passed by. They weren’t super close but they shared many things in common like the love for leadership and academics. Paper liked to call most of their conversations ’nerdy’ which sounds childish, but it was still pretty true… the two would never admit that though.
“Oh, hi suitcase!” Paper said, copying Suitcases enthusiasm. While the two didn’t know each other too well Paper had a good level of respect for her. She was mature, especially for being rather young for a teacher but she didn’t let that maturity make her sour. She still saw flaws in both people and life but she didn’t let that hold her down and she did a good job with sharing that to others who needed to hear those kind but honest words of hers.
The three of them talked for a bit catching up on the three months apart from each other and just how everything’s been going. The atmosphere in there was light. With others chatting around them whether that be awkward small talk or full on conversations. It stayed like that until an office door opened up and out walked Mr. Cobs.
His slick, black shoes that looked like it would be on someone during a church reading, clanked against the floor of the building. A crisp suit that wasn’t too over the top for where he was but definitely not necessary. His yellow, bleach blond hair stretching all the way to his shoulders bouncing with each step. He smelled strongly of gel and curling cream. His glasses sat atop the bridge of his nose and his lanyard around his neck, after all Cobs wanted everyone to know who he was and his status.
Paper turned and quickly changed his scowl upon first spotting him to a tight smile and Suitcase doing the same with giving one that didn’t quite reach her dark brown eyes. Oj just stood there knowing that he’d have to talk to his ‘good pal’ so he put on his best confident demeanour.
“Oj! Good to see you,” Steve called out to the other raising his hands as if they hadn’t seen each other for years on end.
Oj gave a fake chuckle, “good to see you to-!” He tried his best to copy Cobs and raise of his hands in the air that just looked like a makeshift wave.
Cobs turned to the other two that were now trying to make their escape by pushing themselves in a random conversation between two other coworkers they barely knew. “Paper, Suitcase,” he said as some sort of a replacement for the oh-so-tricky-word-to-say, ‘hi’. He turned back to Oj that same shit eating grin plastered on his face.
“How have you been- you know what, tell me all about your summer in my office, we need to have a little chat!” The man said, it was hard to tell if Oj was in trouble or not and that was driving him mad.
“Oh! Uhm- alright..” he was still concerned about what they could possibly need to talk about, it’s not like he had done anything wrong. He turned his head to Paper with an apologetic look. Paper responded with an understanding smile and a slight nod before looking back at Suitcase, most likely going to start up conversation again.
Cobs opened the door and took a seat, addressing Oj to do the same, in his big black chair that looked like his leather shoes. “First things first, how has your summer been?” He was clearly trying to clear the air of the nervous tension.
“All good hear heh, nothing too interesting.” Oj didnt want to mention the fact that he and Paper were planning to get married, it’s not that he was worried per se it was just that…, it was exactly that actually. He was worried about it and it showed. The annoying part was, was that he didn’t know why he was so scared about it or if anyone knew and felt terrible when flinched his hand away when their hands touched around others. He just wanted it to be normal and not be ashamed of it.
He had grown up in a conservative house where everyone was strong and coordinated leaders and then there was him, a guy who taught high schoolers math that most would forget two weeks after school. He liked his job though, he liked the students who cared at least. The ones that actually tried. That was the thing though he loved his job and he loved Paper so why did he feel this shame.
He just hoped that Paper knew the first part of it.
“Good good.” Cobs looking around at his spreadsheets of work for a second before glancing back at the other. “So Oj, I have to ask you a favour.” Oj let out a breath he didn’t know he was holding, he was honestly just relived he didn’t just get fired.
“Of course, what is it?” trying to keep his voice steady but rather shaky still being unsure about what it would be.
Cobs took a breath and the asked, “So you’ve meet my sons right?” Oj had been to a few dinners at his place for birthdays and other work celebrations, and he’d seen his kids. The two he’d met, Mepad and 3GS he thought, searching his brain for the names, they were two well mannered kids. He had taught 3GS for his last bit of school and he was pretty sure he would be teaching the other one this year.
“Yeah I have! Mepad and 3GS right?” He asked wanting to make sure he didn’t absolutely botch the names.
“Yes, those are two of them, but who’ve met Mephone right?” That same almost forced smile on with face but now laced with a slightly confused expression. “Im pretty sure the two of you met at one of the new year parties.”
Oj was starting to get nervous and hoping his head would come up with a face, thankfully it did. He remembered the kid, he had given him a small wave when his father introduced each other. The guy just sat in the corner most of the time doing what looked to be little doodles in his star covered note book while his two other brothers made small talk with coworkers, it was obvious non of them wanted to be there. He remembered Mephone4 making an attempt to forfeit to his room until Cobs caught him and gave him a scolding. Oj didn’t notice it then but the kid looked… scared. More than he should have been. For example when he was a kid and he tried to head up to his bedroom, because what else are you going to do at a Christmas party with relatives you didn’t even know existed, his mom would catch him, he’d be annoyed, but in the end he was most the time allowed to go to his room once the drinks were served. But all the siblings just stood there until the thing ended.
“Ohhh right, Mephone, I remember him.” He said with new found confidence.
“Perfect, good to know you two have already met,” Cobs took another pause.
“I was wondering if you would be open to tutoring him?”
Oj had to do a double take to check if he heard that right. He’d never done tutoring before especially one on one. Sure, he has office hours almost everyday during lunch and for thirty minutes after school so kids could finish up work or tests but that was it. Sure he’d help out the kids if they had questions but he didn’t have time for a whole tutoring lesson, normally after all his students had gone from his classroom he packed up and went home to see Paper. They talked for a bit, Oj talked about which kid was being a shit head and Paper let him in on the latest news which was definitely more gossip than anything. They would make dinner then just have each other, of course Oj would still work for a couple long hours but it was just nice to do some sort of relaxation and get most of the day done with. Especially spending it with his partner.
“Uhm,” he didn’t know what to say. On one hand if he turned it down Cobs would be angry and he could lose that artificial bond he had with the man, the one that gave him promotions and raises, but on the other hand if he agreed Paper wouldn’t take it well, he already made comments about Oj always being too in this work mind that the two of them didn’t have any quality time. Sure the two saw and talked every day but Paper missed those sweet dates when they were younger and Oj not having to worry about his job, grading tests, and Cobs, he just wanted them to be able to actually have each other again, and just each other.
He was about to open up his mouth until Steve stopped him. “Now I understand that it takes up time and I wouldn’t want you staying overtime at school so I can arrange for him to just head to your house when you’re home.” He said, as if that wouldn’t still be time consuming. He looked to have noticed Oj still not being to keen on the idea, “look I get it, it’s a lot, but I’m willing to pay you and I mean c’mon do it for a friend.” Again with the sickly sweet smile. That however slowly was turning disappointed towards Ojs lack of an answer. So he said the first this that came to his mind.
“Yeah, don’t worry about it, it’s no problem,” instantly regretting what he said.
“Perfect! Let me know what your schedule is so we can plan days where Mephone can come over, sound good?” Cobs looked like he had just achieved somthing great, at least Oj was gonna get paid. He just hoped Paper would be fine with it.
Oj exited out of the office with a weight lifted off his chest and then as if someone slammed an even heavier one on his shoulders than the one he went in with. Paper had already gotten his things out at his usual spot in the front desk. “Alright Im going to head to my class alright?” He looked at him, trying to avoid telling him.
“Alright see you later hon,” a smile that Oj could get lost in, it only made him feel worse now that he knew he wouldn’t get to see it as often.
He’ll tell him about the other thing later.
Right, later.
He walked down the long hallway of the place, muscle memory leading him to where he needed to go. Along the way he met another familiar face. Cabby wore glasses and her hair was tied in a messy bun and left her side bangs to flow nicely into her face with a purple clip to keep it out of her eyes. She had on a long sleeved dress shirt that was slightly rolled up at the wrists and a periwinkle vest over it. A long pencil skirt touched her below her knee with white tights under it. Cabby sat in her wheelchair that was covered in stickers that the kids liked to apply.
She taught and helped the students that needed the extra support and other disabled kids around the school. Before she had come here, the school didn’t have a very good program to help any kids with mental or physical disabilities and it was good to see that change.
She was writing down in one of her files until she noticed Oj waving at her. “Oh hi Oj!” She called over to him, she wheeled herself over, wanting to catch up for a few minutes. “How’ve you been.”
“I’ve been well, me and Paper finally got a house.” Him and his fiancée hadn’t had a house last year, they were in a decent sized apartment, after all teaching wasn’t exactly the best paying job. But over the summer they finally got one and settled in at the start of it.
“Congrats to you guys! It’s nice to know you and Paper are settling down.” She and Suitcase were the only coworkers that knew about him and Paper. At least thats who Oj had told, he was more reserved about the relationship while Paper would let anyone know about it if the person asked a question remotely close to one where he could answer with the fact that he and Oj are a couple.
“What about you?”
“Same old same old,” he’d met her through his sister Test tube. When they were a lot younger her and Tube weren’t on the best of terms but slowly become friends again, he got to see Cabby a lot, mostly while the two did ‘experiments’. Test tube did the mathematics and the physical portion while the other wrote the outcomes and other measurements. He also saw her at family dinners and holidays occasionally.
The two talked for a little more until they both headed to their classrooms. Oj placed his coffee on the table and set up his comically large stacks of paper he needed to fill, grade, and sign. He checked his watched and it was around the time people started coming in. Almost exactly after the thought that a group of presumed friends filled the silent room with surprising comfortable chatter.
Mephone dragged his feet through the classroom doors, Mepad walked behind him. Four wasn’t supposed to be here, not like how Mepad was. The difference was that his brother was smart, he could do things and do them well, he worked for this and he deserved to be in the ‘gifted’ kid class. Mephone however, gave up. He didn’t try. He felt so fucking stupid, not being able to compare or come even close to his older siblings.
His dad probably couldn’t handle one of his kids not being in advanced math so he pulled some strings and now he’s here. Now hes forced to sit in a class and while everyone knew what they were doing he was just lost. It was like that for most things but it only made him feel worse.
Mepad took a seat and gestured for him to sit down. Next to Mepad sat a platinum blond boy with hair that was almost white, he had it done in a bowl cut. He looked to have braces and a nerdy little, clip on bow tie. He had on a white collared shirt and beige shorts, paired with knee high socks and a dirty pair of sketchers.
Mepad turned his head to the boy and they started talking, like actually talking. Not just stiff conversation and small talk that he was used too but an actual easy going chat. Like one that you would have with a friend. Mephone just sorta stood awkwardly started unpacking his bag and flipping through his math workbooks that looked like Chinese to him.
His brother took a pause in his conversation and turned over. “Toilet, have you met Mephone?” He glanced over trying to get Four out of that awkward limbo.
“Oh no I haven’t! Hiya there Mista Phone!!” The kid- toilet, was… loud. It was eight in the morning and the guy was acting like he got a free ticket to an amusement park. It was annoying. So Mephone just pursed his lips and hope that gave the guy a clue that he didn’t want to talk. Toilet didn’t catch that but
Mepad did, he glared at him with a look that shouted ‘why can’t you just be nice’. He didn’t know why, maybe he just hated seeing people happy doing things he hated or maybe he was jealous of that happiness and that obliviousness to people being jerks to you.
The teacher, a ginger man with dark skin with freckles across his face and a ridiculous level of orange on his clothes, called the class to attention. The guy went over you basic first day things, don’t throw things, dont chase people with scissors, etc. he grabbed a stack of papers from his desk and started to pass them out. Four internally groaned, it was the first day at school early in the morning, he wasnt ready to do math that he didn’t actually know how to do.
He sighed and tried to look anywhere but his paper, the walls that were littered with posters, the whiteboard, and the window. It was a sunny day and definitely not the type of weather you correlate with the sad truth of school beginning again of all things. He gave up on trying to ignore the work and when he looked to the side he saw Mepad and his, apparent, friend, doing it with no trouble. So why couldn’t he. Just having to take it all in felt like a lot. Meanwhile everyone else was fine.
He turned his attention back on the all of a sudden daunting worksheet. Four tried to read a few problems and tried him best to answer them. It wasn’t long before the bright almost white lights felt they were beating down on him, his head hurt. The words and numbers on the page looked to slowly spin, not being able to stay in one place. Trying to unjumble the mess only gave him a throb in his brain, his eyes didn’t want to focus. The faint talking of students felt so loud. All he wanted was to go back to that bed. The one where he spent most of his days in. Maybe if he just rested his head for a bit the headache would subside and maybe he would get the same almost addictive feeling of slowly rotting in his bedroom, just being able to get lost and get out of his reality. It was better than facing it.
