Unspoken

Summary:

Kakashi has thoughts he can't control and doesn't say out loud, but being jealous of an Uchiha was not on his bingo card this year.

Notes:

I'm baaaaccccckkkk...

Yeah, yeah, it's only been a few weeks but it's been a couple of weeks without any pain and I'm not dying, so I'm on the up and up! I just have two new diagnoses, but they're controlled as of now :D

I don't know how I got this idea. Yes, its a different one but this time i wasn't drinking ( i know... right?) But i like the idea and I hope it takes off.

But let me explain...
🥓a lot of this? The italics is Kakashi thinking to himself. He will be doing that a lot.

🥓Itachi and Sakura are an established couple in the beginning ( i just want to make that clear) Whether or not they are in the end...? Well you just have to see ( i already have 4 chapters fleshed out...)

🥓THIS WILL BE SLOW TO UPDATE!-- Yes, I'm back but with my job and all, I'll be kept busy until my birthday.

🥓 Why the bacon emoji? I don't know! I just like it.

So with all of that out of the way...
I hope you enjoy it :)

Chapter 1: A Dance Unseen

Chapter Text

Kakashi didn’t mind being the Hokage. There were just a few things he disdained about the position, the biggest usually being when he had to go to events like fundraisers and balls and such. One; he was never one to go to these events and for two, they always drained him. After becoming Hokage, he had found himself, more often than not, at said events where he would have to make an appearance. Even though it got him out of the office, he would rather be reading his books in peace.

Though he didn’t mind this…

Out of all three of his students, there was one he was incredibly proud of. Don’t get him wrong, he valued all three of them equally, especially after the war and all, but the way Sakura grew and blossomed just hit differently. So when he got an invite to the gala she had for the new children’s mental hospital she wanted to open up, he didn’t mind going at all.

Some people might think “Why Sakura? why not Naruto or Sasuke?” Well the answer was simple, to Kakashi anyway … because when he failed her, she found a way to better herself. She wasn’t a jinjuriki, or a prodigy with a sharingan, she literally came from nothing with no abilities whatsoever.. Besides perfect chakra control for her age. Now, Kakashi could admit, when she was younger, he didn’t go out of his way to help her. It’s not that he disliked her or anything but because he didn’t know how to handle her. Yes, Naruto and Sasuke were a handful, one reminded him of himself and the other reminded him of his old teammate so he knew how to handle him. But Sakura, out of the three of them, was someone he couldn’t relate to. He had no… connection to her so to speak. So when he was handed an envelope with an invite he was elated, happy that she thought of him.

With his tuxedo and tie, Kakashi found himself in one of the ballrooms, standing next to the bar. He looked around to see who all was there and sure enough, it was all the clanheads and the people who ran the hospital. Kakashi had a tumbler of whiskey in his hand, swirling the amber liquid in circles as he tried to hide himself. Lucky for him, though, no one approached him yet. He was hiding his chakra the best he could so many people just didn’t know he was there yet. Sighing, he was happy for that, happy that no one had noticed him just yet.

It wasn’t for another thirty minutes when Itachi approached him. The Uchiha head was eyeing Kakashi, but it wasn’t with any malice. It was just him being him essentially. Kakashi noticed and held up his hand as usual. Kakashi didn’t know why but Itachi took that as it was okay to approach the Rokudaime. The white haired man sighed internally, but he could admit that it wasn’t entirely unwanted. If there was anyone he could have a good conversation with, it would be his former ABU teammate, besides his own students of course.

“Surprised to see you here,” Kakashi said, though there was a hint of sarcasm to his voice. Itachi just answered with a ‘hm’ as he ordered his own drink.

“Big day, huh?” Kakashi went on. Once Itachi got his drink, he went and stood beside Kakashi, taking a sip before putting a hand in his pocket.

“A little bit. She was a mess this morning.” Itachi answered with a small smile on his face.

That’s right.. They’re dating… Kakashi thought to himself, forgetting that tidbit. It hadn’t been long since she began to bring Itachi around on their tiny get togethers. Besides, he had sent Itachi on a few missions that lasted a while so he’s surprised they were still together.

Kakashi nodded, looking over to the pink haired medic who was charming her way through the crowd. Even though her dress was simply black with white trim across her bust, she was the best looking out of all of them. There was something about the subtle, classy look she was trying to pull off… and she most definitely did pull it off. Thank goodness he had a mask on, or people would see how… fond… he was of Sakura.

Yeah… fond

“Knowing her, she probably thought over her speech she’d have to give about twenty times in the shower before asking you what you thought, then change it half way through even though you said it was fine.”

Itachi nodded his head, taking a swig before he answered.
“Yes, she did exactly that. I don’t blame her, though. This is a… big day for her.”

The two drank from their tumblers, enjoying the silence for a bit.

“I know you’ve talked to your clan. Is your clan going to be a financial backer for the hospital?” Kakashi questioned, getting the small talk out of the way.

Itachi thought over his words, not wanting to give anything away he nodded his head slightly.
“It took a bit of a push, but I got tou-sama to back some of it. I convinced him it would benefit the clan in so many ways.”

The Hokage turned to look at Itachi, wondering what he had meant. Itachi then continued.

“You already know this, so it’s pointless to explain to you, but in order for us to unlock our full potential, we have to experience something… life altering. And to move on from that we would have to suffer loss like we never experienced before. As much as I would like for the future generation to be strong, I don’t wish for them to experience any of that, and if they do we at least have a safety net of sorts… just in case a kid goes through anything that we went through when we were younger.”

Kakashi nodded his head, thinking of when he was younger. If he was able to cope with what happened to his team or able to understand what happened to his father, then he wouldn’t have gone through everything that he did. Even though it shaped him to what he was today, he would never wish it on anyone. So he agreed on how… beneficial it was for them.

“Well, hopefully this era of peace would mean that there wouldn’t be a need for the mental hospital.” Kakashi shrugged, but Itachi answered with a ‘hn.’ Kakashi knew with the way he said it meant that Itachi didn’t fully agree with him, but the Hokage wasn’t one to argue his point. Not to someone who could outsmart him easily.

Kakashi straightened up when Sakura came over to them, her smile bright and cheery as always. He watched her straighten Itachi’s tie with love in her eyes… something that he hadn’t seen since she was obsessed over Sasuke so long ago.

It could have been me…

Kakashi inwardly shook his head, wondering where that thought came from. Yes, he has had thoughts about Sakura before, but he wouldn’t think of them for more than a second.

She’s my student…  There’s no way I could like her like that…

He didn’t hear what she was saying to Itachi. It wasn’t that he couldn’t, more so that he didn’t want to impede on their privacy, but when he finally did listen in, she was going on about how handsome and great looking the Uchiha was. Kakashi couldn’t explain it, but there was a ping of disappointment, something that he never thought he’d feel.

“What about me?” He interrupted. Sakura chuckled and looked Kakashi over, fixing his tie as well.

“Well, of course you look handsome, Sensei!” She smiled, thinking that the bit of jealousy Kakashi showed was a joke. Of course she always had a thing about not knowing he was joking, but this time he was only half way there. He smiled under his mask at her and she smiled back, taking Itachi’s hand and leading him away to talk to someone.

Once Kakashi was alone, he sighed, running a hand through his hair, feeling a little bit stressed out…

Where did that come from? He thought to himself.

I never really thought about her like that before… Okay.. Maybe that one time she went to Suna with me for a diplomatic thing and we shared a hot tub together… logically speaking she is an adult now, I don’t need to feel guilty about this…

Kakashi kept his thoughts to himself, his eyes still on the pink haired medic. He wasn’t able to explain the mini crisis he was going through, but one thing he wasn’t going to do is dwell on it. He wasn’t going to think of her in any way, shape, or form that deviates away from their sensei/ student relationship they had. Besides, did he want to ruin what they currently have at the moment?

No.. obviously not…

To get his mind off of Sakura for the moment, he began to focus on the music. The string quartet in the opposite corner from him was playing some sort of ballroom music. The swell of the notes began to calm him down, making him think less of Sakura… or it was until he turned to see that Sakura was dancing with Itachi, her hand holding up her gown as they went in circles.

I didn’t know Itachi could dance… Does she know I can dance? I could definitely dance better than him… wait… why am I comparing myself to Itachi of all people?

Sighing, Kakashi looked up at the ceiling, internally berating himself for the thoughts he had. This was something that he would have to think over but not in public. He looked back at the budding couple, seeing that the rest of the guests at the gala were watching them, too, everyone else smiling and encouraging this because they were some sort of power couple.

Tsunade’s prodigy and the prodigy of the Uchiha clan… makes sense…

Kakashi rolled his eyes at that thought. He was a prodigy too, but no one would ever look at him that way… which is weird. Kakashi never thought of himself as an unwanted person, but the idea that he can’t have what he wants… wait– does he want Sakura? Yes, he felt jealous for a minute, but does that mean he actually wanted  her? She was his student for kami’s sake, he can’t think of her like that!

Not knowing what to do, Kakashi placed the now empty tumbler on the bar behind him and left the gala for the night, a bottle of sake waiting for him.

Chapter Text

It’s been about a month since the gala, and getting the news about it was bittersweet in a sense.

Kakashi was ecstatic to hear that Sakura raised all the money she needed. Of course he was happy about that, but to know that it was basically because of Itachi talking his father into backing it, it made him a little… sour? Was that the right word for it…?

Kakashi was sitting in his office, reading the newspaper to see that Sakura and Itachi were on the front page; The opening article for all to see was about Sakura’s plans to start the clinic and why she was. It was nice that she said that most of her team were orphans to war and that she wanted a way to make it better. His heart swelled reading that. Of course, he technically wasn’t the only orphan on the team– everyone but Sasuke was raised without parents, but the idea that he had motivated her in some way made him feel better, that he was actually influential during a part of her life.

He put the paper down and sighed. Of course, there was something about Sakura that all in all made him feel like he did what was best. That when she came to him all those years ago and told him that she was leaving his tutelage to work with Tsunade was probably the best thing he had done for her– but she wasn’t that little girl anymore. She was an adult with adult needs and–-

Why did my thoughts go straight to that?

Kakashi sighed once again, trying to get rid of those devilish thoughts. Thoughts that would never end well for him. There was a reason why he didn’t have romantic thoughts about people.

For one, they would never go the way he wanted it to go.

He has wanted them in the past but every time he got that close to someone, platonic or romantic, they would leave him in some sort of devastating way. His team, his sensei and his sensei’s wife… it just never turned out the way he genuinely wanted. Hell, even the people he had an attachment to now had left him once before… they came back but those few years without his students after being so… so…  devoted to them in some sort of way was crushing. There was no other way he could explain it rather than it was crushing.

It crushed his spirit, it crushed his emotions, just–

Kakashi slapped his face with his palms. He didn’t need to feel this kind of self pity in the morning. He didn’t need the doubt and the worry that came along with thinking like that. He turned to look out the window if only to distract himself from his thoughts. It shouldn’t get any worse than this, right?

But seeing them together a month ago stirred something in him. It made him think of things that he shouldn’t have thought about. He has never thought about Sakura in that way before so where did it come from?

That’s a stupid question….
Kakashi chuckled to himself.

He knows exactly where the thoughts came from. It was eight years ago at Sakura’s eighteenth birthday party that Ino threw for her. Sakura had a little to drink and Kakashi was the one to take her home since Naruto and Sasuke were off doing.. Whatever it is they do together. He didn’t want to think about it.

He wanted to make sure she got home okay and Sakura was going on about being single and that it was too bad that Sasuke wasn’t into her… though Kakashi never knew that until she said something. She then went on about how she was ready for a relationship, that she was actively looking. At that time, Kakashi didn’t think anything of it, but she looked at him with a big, goofy smile on her face and said the words he had dreaded to hear.

If only you weren’t my sensei, I would have asked you on a date already…

Wait–

If Kakashi had dreaded those words… then there had to be something that happened before that…

Kakashi sat at his desk, sighing for the tenth time that morning, racking his brain when he first thought of Sakura as, well, more than a student or a teammate.

Oh…

It was then…

After the war had officially ended and Naruto was saying goodbye to his father, Sakura held Kakashi as they watched the intimate moment. It was then, the softness of her hands against him, after he just saw what exactly those hands can do. There was no other time before that where he was that.. Comfortable… around her, that he felt at home. Afterwards, the two of them would help Naruto and Sasuke with their studies. Until she became a doctor at the clinic at least. Then it was just Kakashi dealing with the two dunderheads. How those two were able to stop the world from being destroyed as demi gods but couldn’t pass a simple test was beyond him. After that he became Hokage and simply promoted both of them. Now Kakashi is just waiting for Naruto to take over… When? He doesn’t know. Naruto said he wanted to get his life together before anything happened…

Later, Kakashi would have thoughts and dreams about having a domesticated life. Sometimes it was with his previous lovers… or what he calls lovers. He never had a real relationship before, but they would bring him his breakfast. He would thank them and look up to see a plethora of different faces, but lately he would see pale skin with a purple diamond on their forehead, yet no actual facial features and no hair. So that meant either he was dreaming of Sakura those few times or Tsunade and, no offence to his predecessor but, he never had thoughts of her like that before. He had never seen Tsunade in that light.

Kakashi was trying to stop his train of thoughts, but when he finally closed his eyes there was a knock at the door.

“Enter…” Kakashi said quietly. Thankfully it was loud enough for the person on the other side of the door to hear.

Itachi had walked in, moving to stand in front of the desk to see the hokage himself with his eyes closed. He stared at him and sighed.

“Did I ruin your nap, Hokage-sama?” Itachi asked. Kakashi sighed once again, opening his eyes, blinking to get his vision back as he began to look up. The Uchiha had papers in his hands, staring back at Kakashi. As much as he respected Itachi, he didn’t want to see him right now.

“No, Itachi. I’m trying to stave off a headache... What do you need?”

Itachi paused, not sure what to make of what Kakashi had said.
“I just have the paperwork for the rezoning of the Uchiha compound. You said to give it to you before the clan head meeting so I thought I might drop it off a few days early… Are you okay?”

“Yes. I mean a headache is a headache. You know what that’s like.” Kakashi joked lightly.

Itachi nodded his head.

“You might want to see Sakura about that. She’s pretty good at getting rid of headaches.” The Uchiha suggested, and for some reason that had irked him.

“I do know that of course.” Kakashi said.

She was healing my headaches before she was healing yours–

Kakashi shook his head, trying to not give away his inner thoughts. Itachi looked at him, very confused. He didn’t have very good interpersonal skills, but he could pick up when someone was… annoyed…

“Uhm, Hokage-sama… is there something you’d like to talk about?”

Kakashi shook his head no.
“Though there is something I’m curious about… How long have you and Sakura been together?”

It was Itachi’s turn to blink in confusion. He started at Kakahi, a little surprised he had asked that.

“It will be a year this month… why?” Itachi questioned skeptically, not sure where Kakashi was going with this.
“No real reason. I just don’t really remember.”

Itachi nodded his head.

“You know what I don’t get?” Kakashi said aloud, his brain not catching up with his mouth. His voice was kept even in its normal lazy draw.

“Why would she be obsessed over Sasuke for years and then move on to you?”

Itachi stared at Kakashi intensely. He didn’t have an answer for that.

Kakashi laughed inwardly, though in his head it sounded as if he wanted to stump the Uchiha.
“It’s like you’ve asked yourself that question before.”

Itachi sighed, looking at the clock before bringing a chair to sit down.
“I have… thought about that. But she reassured me that it’s not the case. That she isn’t trying to bag my clan… so to speak.”

“--but you’ve thought about it…” Kakashi continued.

“Yes. I have. And so has Tou-sama and Kaa-sama. But she was confident that she wasn’t thinking like that.”

Kakashi nodded, pondering what to think next, but the way that Kakashi had asked meant that either Kakashi has thought of it too

Itachi cleared his throat before standing up.

Kakashi inwardly cheered himself on.

1-0, Hatake…

“Hokage-sama…” Itachi said quietly.
“I don’t know where that came from, but the only reason why you would ask that after asking me about my relationship with Sakura is because you have a point that you want to make. What is it?”

Kakashi kept a blank face, shrugging his shoulders, but he didn’t want to talk about how jealous he was of the clan head at the moment.

“I’ll look these over, give it to the counsel and you should get your approval by the next clan head meeting. If you need anything before that, you know where to find me.”

Itachi should know better, but he didn’t ask. Simply leaving the office altogether.

The sound of the door shutting echoed through the office.

Kakashi knows that Itachi knows he wouldn’t just ask a random question unless he was trying to figure something out, but alas, Kakashi kept it to himself. He didn’t want anyone to know the kind of thoughts he was currently having of his former student. If any of them came out, it would ruin his position and ruin his relationship with.. Well his whole team. There was only one person he could talk this through with, but he was miles away watching after Orochimaru.

Well… he does come home soon… I’ll see what he thinks…

He looked at the clock and saw that it was only noon. Kakashi sighed for the last time this morning, getting up to get ready for lunch.

Chapter 3: A Taste of Jealousy

Summary:

Sakura says and shows off a little bit too much.

Notes:

Yo!

1. I know, three updates in 3 days. How amazing! I'm just so excited and the comments are making me want to post
2. I know this says 10 chapters but it may be more than that. So I changed that part about the fic.
3. So many people are asking me about the ship and the end game. I'm getting there! My [second] favorite ship *is* KakaSaku. BUT go ahead and comment who's side you're on. If you're team KakaSaku as the end game or Team ItaSaku.

Oh! And i got a new keyboard. It has nothing to do with the fic, but i just want people to know. Its a tactile keyboard that just so happens to be Naruto colors. I found a Kakashi tactile keyboard that i want but its like 350. Though i did get a big mousepad that has kakashi on it. So there's that. :D

No beta, all mistakes are my own!

Chapter Text

Sometimes when you didn’t find Kakashi in the office or at his beloved bar, he would be found at Ichiraku.

He sat in his normal seat as he churned his ramen in circles with his chopsticks. After the conversation with Itachi a couple of days ago, he had to have time to himself. He was sure Itachi had picked up on Kakashi’s thoughts; The man was too smart not to. But Itachi didn’t say anything to him after that. Kakashi knows if Itachi had a problem with him, he would have said something already. Thankfully, they simply avoided each other.

He was deep within his own thoughts when he smelled a whiff of cherry blossoms. He knew exactly who that was and was surprised she was even here. Normally Sakura ate at the hospital since they were given free food in the cafeteria for lunch and dinner. It was something she and Shizune had implemented once Sakura took over, thinking that if the medics were going to practically be living there then they should have access to free food… another admirable thing about her.

Kakashi looked up to see she was talking to Ayame, being handed a covered bowl of something.

She probably had ordered something… Kakashi thought to himself. It was then he noticed bruising around her neck. He couldn’t explain it, but looking at those subtle marks made something tick in Kakashi. Someone had hurt his muse–

His student… Of course he meant student.

Kakashi cleared his throat loudly, garnering the attention of everyone in the space, including Sakura. She turned to look at him, smiling gently as if nothing was wrong. He motioned for her to come over, and she listened dutifully, moving to stand in front of him.

“Do my eyes deceive me, or do you have bruises on your neck?” He asked, raising a brow as he spoke. Sakura began to blush, putting the order she just picked up on the table to bring out a compact mirror she carried with her in her bag. Sakura opened it up and began to look at the marks on her neck, making her blush even more. Her cheeks were as deep and red as her shirt.

“Oh… shit– I thought I healed that.” She chuckled nervously. Kakashi motioned for her to come closer. Confused, she leaned forward when Kakashi brought a glowing hand to her neck to try and heal it himself. He concentrated hard as the marks began to face. Once he was finished, he removed his hand and Sakura chuckled, though the look she had on her face showed her she was impressed.

“I didn’t know you could heal.” She crossed her arms across her chest with a smirk on her face.
“Have you been holding out on me, jiji?”

Kakashi nodded, though you could tell he was smiling underneath his mask.
“I had asked Tsunade to teach me a few things. I can’t do what you do, but I can at least heal small cuts and bruises. So… are you going to tell me where they came from?”

Sakura began to giggle nervously, her hand going to rub the back of her neck.
“Well… you see…”

“It’s okay, you can tell me…”

“It… was Itachi.”

Kakashi froze. If it were anyone else, he wouldn’t feel the unbridled anger he felt, mostly because someone had hurt Sakura. It was as if Sakura had noticed he was getting riled up when she began to wave her hands in front of her, shaking her head.

“No–no! It’s not what you think. You see..” The blush came back full force. That’s when it clicked for Kakashi, his eyes narrowing into a smirk.

“Oh? Our little blossom likes it rough?”

“Don’t– don’t tell anyone. But we do… try new things in bed. And because I can basically heal myself we might get a bit… rough… sometimes, but no. He didn’t hurt me. I just forgot to heal it before my shift… So you're telling me I walked around the village all day with hand marks around my throat?” She sighed.
“Great.. What a way to ruin my reputation…”

“I don’t think your reputation was ruined. It just looks like someone either attacked you with a vacuum cleaner or a patient tried to strangle you.” He joked, though on the inside he couldn’t help but think about this new revelation about his student he never knew… or even knew he wanted to know.

“Well.. I have to get back to the clinic. Anything else?” The doctor asked. Kakashi shook his head no before she turned around and waved over her shoulder. Kakashi waved back before sighing, his mood ruined.

It wasn’t that he was upset that Sakura was experimental in bed. He was mostly upset over the fact that she had tried that stuff with Itachi. She didn’t know about Kakashi’s… tastes… that he knew of, but there were ways to do things like that and ways not to. Like… using chakra as a buffer to not make a bruise… but with his time being on a team with Itachi, he knew the Uchiha knew that. It's how they got away with assassinations in the past…

But knowing this new thing about Sakura stirred something in him.

What all is she interested in trying out? Would she be that experimental with me…?

Then the unwanted thoughts began to pop up in his head. The thought of how she would look underneath him, her cheeks flushed, her eyes closed, her mouth slightly cracked enough for him to hear her moan–

Kakashi sighed heavily, putting his head into his hand as he held it up. He needed to get these thoughts out of his head. He can’t  think of Sakura like that… Can he?

No… I shouldn’t. She has Itachi and she’s obviously happy… but she would be happier with me– no!

He shook his head to try and eradicate these thoughts… these x rated snippets and dreams he’s been having. He needed to stop torturing himself and thinking of something that could never happen. Besides, they were what… thirteen, fourteen years apart? Her and Itachi are much closer in age, both very mature. He was just an old geezer that had thoughts about a younger woman… though she was an adult…

Conflicted, Kakashi didn’t even finish his ramen. He got up and placed enough ryo on the table before leaving, his hands in his pockets. He would beat himself up tonight, he was sure of it.

Chapter 4: A Face That Wont Fade

Summary:

Kakashi asks Yamato to come over

Notes:

So...
I might as well warn you guys...

I've been cranking this out this past week but I'm going to have to let up a little bit. Long story short, I had some tests done and they found something bad on my thyroid. So within the next month (has not been scheduled yet) I'm going to have surgery to have my thyroid taken out. It's always one thing, huh?

Anyway, just in case TW, it gets a bit sexual in this chapter. If you're not a fan of it then skip over it.

No beta, all mistakes are my own.

Chapter Text

The room was quiet. Kakashi woke up to noise in his kitchen. He was surprised but– this wasn’t his room. He got up from the queen sized bed he apparently fell asleep on, making his way out to the table. There was the face again… The pale skin, blank face and purple diamond.

“Good morning, Kakashi!”

The voice was distorted.
He wasn’t able to pin who the voice belonged to …
Kakashi looks out the window to see cherry blossoms floating past them, the shade of pink that looked all too familiar…

“...then you wake up?” Tenzou asked as he sipped at his sake.

Kakashi nodded his head. Normally he would have taken Tenzou out, but he needed to talk to someone and if anyone overheard the conversation he would be ostracized, his team would disown him but the internal conflict was killing him. The only person he trusted with his thoughts was his former partner in crime so to speak.

“Well it’s obvious it’s Sakura.” Tenzou concluded.
“I mean the cherry blossoms, the purple diamond on the forehead… it’s subtle but it's there.”

Kakashi topped off Tenzou’s dish before staring at the bottle. Then, without warning, he began to drink straight from the bottle. Once the bottle was empty, he pulled his mask up and sighed.

“I need to stop, though. This isn’t healthy.”

Tenzou nodded, understanding what Kakashi had meant.
“You don’t need to beat yourself up over it though, or feel guilty. Now, if it was 10 years ago, I would have tried to put a stop to it. But she’s twenty six. Now, I might not be good at the whole social thing, but that’s more than an appropriate age… so what’s the problem?”

Kakashi looked at Tenzou, his finger on his chin while he thought to himself, trying to come up with the best way to explain it.

“Well… for one… I am the Hokage; I am in a position of power. Sakura is my subordinate. We aren’t the same rank anymore, haven’t been for a while. If others saw us together like that, they would think that I forced her. Secondly–”  Kakashi put two fingers up. “We were on the same team for years–”

“Well that’s a stupid excuse. I know for a fact that you’ve slept with people on the same team as you before. There was Yugao and then–”

“--then there was you…” Kakashi pointed out. Tenzou nodded his head slowly.
“Yes. There was me. And then Yoji would brag about how he saw you naked that one time, but I don’t think anything has come from that–”

“Well you are wrong about that. It was a one time thing” Kakashi sighed.

“Right…” Tenzou continued.
“So what’s the difference? You’ve done it before, why would it be any different with Sakura?”

“Thirdly,” Kakashi held up a third finger.
“I was her sensei. It would cross a line.”

“Yes.. but what line? She’s never stated a boundary with you.” Tenzou concluded.
“Look… either try something with her or don’t. There isn’t a need to guilt trip yourself over something that hasn’t happened yet, senpai.”

“I know.. But she’s with Itachi now. So I can’t really get a word in edgewise, now can I?” Kakashi reminded Tenzou, who rolled his eyes.

“You’re punishing yourself over an unknown. It’s… unlike you.” Tenzou went on.
“What’s so different about her and me?”

“You were never my student.” Kakashi answered as if it were a simple question.

“Right…” Tenzou sighed, taking his head protector off, a sign that he was relaxed. Kakashi was sure it was the sake.

“Anyway… I need to take my mind off the whole thing… erase it from my memories for now…”

“...Which is why you invited me over…” Tenzou said sadly as he got up. He walked to the other side of the table, straddling Kakashi’s lap. He looked down at the hokage to see that he was.. Conflicted. Normally what he and Tenzou had was to let off steam, to scratch an itch so to speak, but whatever was going on in Kakashi’s head really was starting to bug him. Tenzou knew that and yet here they were, trying to get their mind off of someone he was pining for… for one of them at least.

Kakashi ran a hand through Tenzou’s hair, looking up at him with the same look he always gave him when they were like this– his eyes full of wanting yet it was obvious Kakashi needed this. Tenzou pulled his mask down, pressing his dry lips against Kakashi's, making him sigh, calming him down. Kakashi put his hands on Tenzou’s hips to hold him still, Tenzou trailing his lips down his current muse’s neck. Tenzou felt the cloth around Kakashi’s neck, using his teeth to pull it down further.

This was normal for the two of them… when one needed release the other was there to help it along, but alarm bells were ringing in Kakashi’s head once he felt Tenzou’s hands going underneath the band of his sweatpants, Tenzou’s hand ghosting Kakashi’s member before he grasped it in his hand.

“I don’t know what the answer is, but if you want me to stop… tell me…” Tenzou whispered. Kakashi nodded his head, his eyes closing as Tenzou’s hand began to move against him.
It felt familiar, but it was wrong.

Kakashi opened his eyes and saw the same damned blank face again. The same blank face with the purple diamond in the middle, except this time there were pink pips attached to it. Tenzou’s voice became light and feminine, and the smell of cherry blossoms began to flood his senses… which was weird… they were inside. Where is this coming from??

Kakashi shook his head.

“Are you alright?” The soft voice asked.

Kakashi looked up, the purple diamond staring at him.

“Yes.. I’m fine…” He said. He pulled away to lift this all but familiar stranger up, feather light in his arms as he carried them to the adjoining bedroom. Thank goodness the door was already open.

Kakashi sat Tenzou down on the bed, him in between his legs, his hand holding the other’s neck. Kakashi leaned forward and kissed him deeply once again, his tongue tracing his bottom lip to ask for permission. Tenzou relented, opening his mouth so Kakashi could map out the familiar territory. But this was different. He could still smell the cherry blossoms, even in this room. He pulled away, Kakashi looking up at Tenzou’s forehead to see there wasn’t a purple diamond anymore. Confused, he moved to lay beside Tenzou, pulling him down with him.

“How about we just lie here?” Kakashi muttered, trying to keep his disappointment to himself, but Tenzou heard it in his voice.

“Yeah… we can do that…” Tenzou sighed, curling up to Kakashi’s side. Tenzou then kissed Kakashi’s collarbone tenderly, trying to test the waters but Kakashi didn’t let up. He simply took a deep breath and let it go.

“You’re thinking of her now, aren’t you?” He asked quietly. Kakashi didn’t answer. He reached out to turn the lamp beside his bed off, the button making a click noise.

“Goodnight, Tenzou. You have a long day of traveling ahead of you.

Chapter Text

A week has gone by since that unfulfilled night with Tenzou.

Going back to the daily grind was rough, especially since Tenzou looked hurt when he had left.

Kakashi knew why though.

Tenzou knew that Kakashi was thinking about Sakura, that he was imagining her touching him instead. But the words Tenzou said were still too fresh…

Don’t do that again… I can’t take it…

Kakashi berated himself as the clan heads talked at the table in front of him. Everyone knew that he was spacing out. Heck, he did it every month when these… Well mostly, old geezers came together. Today, though, was a little bit different.

Instead of Fugaku sitting in his normal seat, Itachi was there. He was talking to everyone as if nothing happened. As if it wasn’t long lost, members of his clan had planned the world’s demise. Actually, if it wasn’t for the fact that Kakashi was as connected to the Uchiha clan as he was, no one else would be humoring them. But since it was Itachi that led the platoon of Uchiha through the war and stopped the edo tensei with Shisui, the rest of the village decided to put all prejudices aside and let him sit at the table... quite literally, actually.

The rezoning of the Uchiha compound was Kakashi’s idea.

The rest of the village didn’t know about the planned coup that Shisui was able to stop, but he only knew all about it once Itachi caught him up to speed after the war. Itachi let him know that it was Danzo who tried to ostracize the Uchiha clan after the Kyuubi attack, incidentally the same day as Naruto’s birthday and the fateful day Kakashi lost his mentor and their wife. Now that Kakashi thinks about it, a lot of things tend to happen around his student’s birthday–

“Is that okay, Hokage-sama?” Itachi asked.

“Yeah.. yeah.. It’s perfectly fine.”

Ino, who had gotten the title of clan head after her father perished in the war, stared at him and smirked.

“Kaka-sensei… you were spacing out again, weren’t you?” Ino asked. Kakashi sighed.

“Ino-san, I know you’re not used to these meetings but you can’t call me that here.” He said aloud, though there wasn’t a bite to his words.

Besides, only two people would willingly call him that. And he wanted to keep it that way.

“...but Sakura still calls you that. Do you not make her call you by your title?” Ino asked, half heartedly.

Kakashi saw Itachi stiffen up as the name escaped Ino’s lips, bringing Kakashi back to their last conversation. The look Itachi had on his face said he was conflicted but his body language said he was unbothered. If it wasn’t for the years Kakashi had spent as his team captain, up until he had taken the position as sensei of Team Seven, then he wouldn’t have been able to tell.

“...let’s get back to the matter at hand. Does anyone disagree with the rezoning? Or are we all in agreement?”

There was a sound of harmonious ‘ayes’ filling the room, making Kakashi relax. He thought this would have been harder since the Uchiha would be taking up more space in the village but, like he assumed, everyone was so grateful for what Itachi and the clan had done so they wanted to give this to them. Kakashi was surprised that Tsunade hadn’t thought of it.

“Okay, the meeting is adjourned. We will meet up again next month.” The bored draw of his voice was obvious.

Kakashi stood up, his kage robes swishing at his feet as he moved across the room. He opened the door, ready to leave as the clan heads lingered for a bit… or he was about to leave when he felt the all familiar chakra of his students approaching the meeting room.

Once he stepped outside of the room, he found all three in front of him.

“Oh, we missed it,” Naruto joked. Sakura rolled her eyes and Sasuke stayed silent. Kakashi took a deep breath before he stepped aside to walk past them. All three of their eyes followed Kakashi before their feet decided to move and follow their sensei.

“Why are you running away? We have something we want to ask you.” Sakura called out.

That voice…

It was the same voice he heard when Tenzou was over that night… Kakashi stiffened up once he realized it. Sasuke and Sakura noticed and looked at each other though Sakura shrugged when Sasuke spoke up.

“What was that about?” He asked his former sensei.

“Don’t worry about it… and the answer is no.”

“But you don’t know what we’re going to ask!” Naruto said loudly. Sakura, like old times, swung her fist at him to try and get him to shut up, but Naruto was smart enough this time and side stepped her as if it was nothing.

“Naruto, you’re either going to ask me to treat you guys to ramen, ask me for a mission for all three of you and quite frankly I can't spare either of you right now, or you’re going to ask me to go to the bar.. In which case, I would probably say yes but later.”

Naruto laughed.

“Actually, none to either of them.”

Kakashi rolled his eyes and turned himself around to look at his three students.

“Then what is it?”

“Why are you so testy?” Sasuke asked bluntly. Kakashi ignored his question. The last thing they needed to know was that he was pent up.

“What do you guys want?”

“We wanted to spar. Like old times, ya know?”

Kakashi smirked underneath his mask. He was itching for a fight, but not with any one of them.. But Sasuke could be a good substitute…

“Okay, bar it is.”

Kakashi turned around to walk past them, Naruto cheering, Sakura smiling and Sasuke being Sasuke.

It didn’t take long for them to make it to their all familiar bar. The smell of alcohol was all too recognizable to them.

Kakashi sat across from Sakura, Sasuke beside her while Naruto slid in to sit beside him the sensei. Kakahi got his book out and began to read as the waitress came over to take their orders. There really wasn’t a reason to, it wasn’t like the waitress didn’t know their orders by heart already.

When the bartender left, Naruto turned to face Kakashi.

“Why say no to the spar? We thought that after the meeting you’d be up to let off some steam.”

“Because you two are demi gods and Sakura can break me in half with a finger.” Kakashi answered, his eyes staring at Sakura.

Naruto noticed, a little confused but didn’t say anything.

“Anyway… why can’t you spare us? We could have finished whatever mission you put us on easily.” Naruto went on.

Kakashi thought over his words carefully, his eyes still glancing at Sakura. He couldn’t help but think of how… great Sakura would look in one of his sweatpants after a night of passion, her hair mussed a little, her eyes half closed–

Kakashi sighed aloud, getting Sakura’s attention.

“Something wrong, Kaka-sensei?” She asked. But of course Kakashi wasn’t going to say that was on his mind.

“Nothing just… talk to Ino about calling me that in front of the clan heads. I understand that she is… relaxed.. But there has to be a tone set and I don’t want her to address me disrespectfully in front of everyone. We’re lucky Fugaku wasn’t there or we would have had an argument on our hands.”

Sakura was confused.

“Well… I call you that. Why can’t she call you that?”

“Because you are different.” Kakashi’s eyes smiled. Sasuke noticed how he said that and stared, but he didn’t say a word. The mismatched purple and black eyes were unsettling but Kakashi didn’t let that fact be known.

“Right… that’s how she knows you– wait… why wasn’t Fugaku there?” Sakura asked as she straightened up. Sasuke decided to intervene.

“Because Tou-sama is stepping down. Did you not know this?”

Sakura shook her head no.

Sasuke, for some reason, smirked.

“I’m surprised he didn’t tell you… He really should have.”

Kakashi noticed the way Sasuke had said that. He took his eyes off of Sakura and went to Sasuke, who was relaxed as if nothing had happened.

“...and why would he have told her? Isn’t the clan stuff not any of her business?” Kakashi questioned Sasuke, who shrugged.

Sasuke kept quiet as their drinks were delivered, Sasuke being handed his in a blue glass with an umbrella and a pineapple on the rim. Naruto snickered but Sasuke didn’t pay any attention to it.

“I don’t want to taste my alcohol…” He murmured, going to nibble on the pineapple.

Kakashi rolled his eyes, not paying attention to the other two guys at the table. His focus was on Sakura. The pinked headed kunoichi noticed and smiled at him like she normally would, making Kakashi’s heart stop. With a nod of his head, he went back to reading his book.

“Speaking of the meeting… Naruto.. Are you not going to make your presence?”

Naruto took a swig of his beer, thinking to himself for a minute.

“I don’t want to until I’m actually married and with kids. I mean.. Come on. There's technically only two people in my clan left, and the other one doesn’t even live in Konoha. So what would be the point? It’s two people…”

Kakashi kept his nose in the infamous orange book. He decided to tune Naruto out for now. Good thing Sakura wasn’t paying attention to him because if she noticed, it wouldn’t work out too well. She would literally rip him in half if she knew the thought he had in his head… but because of the thoughts he had and the conversations they had before this, Kakashi had to get away. Deciding to come up with an excuse, he stood up, making sure to pay for his sake.

“Wait.. where are you going?” Sakura asked, trying to make sense of him getting up so abruptly.

“I have to walk the dogs… I forgot that I let them out of their scroll this morning.” He murmured under his breath. All three of his students knew that was a lie, Sasuke getting up with him.

“I’ll help.” Sasuke said, his voice monotone. Kakashi nodded as he began to walk away, Sasuke following.

Naruto and Sakura watched as they left, neither of them saying anything.

Once they made it outside, Sasuke caught up with Kakashi.

“You might want to tone it down a little bit.” Sasuke said quietly. Kakashi didn’t say anything for a few moments

“I don’t know what you’re–”

“You were undressing my ex with your eyes.”

“One, I wasn’t and for two, your brother’s girlfriend.” Kakashi pointed out, keeping his gaze ahead.

“No– no.. stop.” Sasuke said. Kakashi stopped walking as Sasuke did and sighed.

“Sounds like someone is jealous?” Kakashi raised a brow, loving this new discovery. So the demi god still likes his ex… who just so happens to be his brother’s long-term girlfriend… the same woman that Kakashi hasn’t been able to get off his mind for a while now…

Kakashi looked Sasuke in the eyes, unafraid of what his eyes could possibly do to him.

“I’m not jealous just… stop. It’s okay when it’s coming from my brother, but you? You were her sensei, you’re so much… older than her. It’s simply not right. Go and get laid tonight and don’t think of Sakura in that way.. okay?” Sasuke concluded before he finally walked away. Kakashi ran a hand through his hair, stressed

I’ve stepped in it now…

Normally he didn’t care what his students thought of him, but now that Sasuke of all people knew that he was interested in her in some sort of way, it was dangerous. Sasuke was obviously closer to Itachi than he was, so the idea that all Sasuke had to do was tell Itachi what had happened and there would be… Well not necessarily a fight. As strong and witty as Itachi was, he was more of a pacifist. He wouldn’t literally fight Kakashi… would he? Though without his eye, Kakashi probably didn’t hold a candle to Itachi anymore. In that way… at least. Itachi could do a lot of damage if he wanted to.

Kakashi finally got to his quarters for the night, looking up to see that he was going to be alone… Maybe if he did get laid, he wouldn’t have these thoughts of Sakura. Without another word, he walked past his quarters and went to one of the bars he was sure he could find someone for the night. At least try again…

Chapter Text

A month had passed since he went to find some company but, unfortunately, his thoughts haven’t subsided.

Now that the children’s mental health clinic’s ground breaking ceremony was today, it would mean he would most likely see his nightly muse and the bane of his existence today. Which was fine, he can be professional about it. It’s not a big deal. So to support her, Kakashi had decided to at least give Sakura flowers. He stopped by the flower shop that Ino runs and picked up an oxalis plant. He knew for a fact that she knew it meant good luck and hope she didn’t see beyond that.

Kakashi made his way through the village, wondering what Sakura was doing to pump herself up for the ceremony. He knew she would probably be at her office in the clinic, or on the clinic floor. Either way, he knew where she would be. The only reason why he was happy to reach out to her was for more reasons than to support her but he wasn’t afraid of his thoughts straying, especially when he is there as Hokage and not as her former sensei. Like he thought before, he is able to keep things professional when things need to be.

Instead of going through the clinic, Kakashi decided to make an appearance through the open window where her office was but before he got to close, heard an all familiar voice speaking.

Itachi…

Of course Itachi would be there. He was probably trying to calm her down, but it didn’t sound like he was giving her encouraging words. Now that he thought about it, Sakura’s voice was filled with worry and… anger?

Good… let them argue. Kakashi smirked.

He got closer and decided to try and listen in on the conversation, thinking that if Itachi was going to make her cry then he could swoop in and be the hero for the day.

“--I’m not suggesting it to be mean. It… Sasuke was the one who brought it up and I thought that I might talk to you about it.” Itachi sighed, his voice trying to be as low as possible so no one else would hear it.

“I know, but Kaka-sensei? There’s no way. He’s a good guy and he would never think of me that way.” Sakura countered.

“There isn’t a reason why Sasuke would lie to me like that. He cares for the both of us and I highly doubt he would say anything to stir up trouble. If he said Kakashi was staring at you with some look in his eye, then I believe him. Now I’m not asking you to stay away from Kakashi forever just.. Don’t be alone with him… okay?”

Kakashi gripped the planter he had in his hand. Why Sasuke would go tattling on Kakashi didn’t make any sense. Yes, Sasuke cared for Sakura, always has, but unless he felt threatened or something… it simply didn’t come together in Kakashi’s mind.

Kakashi moved closer as he heard Itachi sigh. He was close enough to look into the office and not be spotted, but once he looked inside, he saw Itachi stiffen up as if he knew someone was there.

“I’m sorry… I’m not the one to make demands or anything, but just… keep an eye on him… okay?” Itachi concluded before placing his finger under Sakura’s chin to make her look up at him.

“It does a little.” He admitted, a bit of worry in his eyes.

Sakura chuckled. The confused look on Itachi’s face was all that Kakashi needed to know about this whole ordeal, but he didn’t expect Sakura to say anything after that. She straightened the collar of his shirt, traced a finger across his chest and smiled.

“Even if Kakashi was looking at me in any sort of way then let him look. We both know who’s allowed to touch me when I come home at night… right? Just know that I wouldn’t let anything like that happen.”

The hokage’s eyes widened when Itachi laughed. He leaned his head over, kissing her on the lips. To the untrained eye, it would simply look as if it were any old couple kissing, but Kakashi knew for a fact that Itachi was making his claim, letting him know that Sakura was his and only his.
Sakura let out a little moan, her hand going to rest on Itachi’s chest as she deepened it, her eyes closing as if she was enjoying what Itachi was giving her. Itachi's own hand traced Sakura’s side as she relaxed against him. Kakashi knew he shouldn’t be watching, that he should let them have their moment, but the whole time he did watch he imagined it was him Sakura was kissing, not Itachi. That it was him who was moving to take off her labcoat, letting it drop to the floor as she moved her arms to let him. That it was Kakashi who was unzipping her shirt and turning her around to bend over her desk, as if they had done this before.

Kakashi’s eyes stayed as Itachi pulled up the skirt Sakura was wearing, exposing the black lacey panties she was wearing, but there was a bit of hesitation in Sakura’s movements. That’s when, Kakashi decided, enough was enough. He stomped his feet in the hallway to make it sound like he was coming towards the door, making Sakura quickly pull her skirt down. She cleared her throat while Itachi sighed in frustration, moving himself around slowly to make it look like nothing was happening but when Kakashi went to the doorway, he smiled under his mask. To the untrained eye, Itachi would look indifferent, but it was obvious, to the hokage at least, that Itachi was frustrated. He stared at his former teammate as Sakura smiled at Kakashi.

“Wh–Hi… Kaka-sensei…” She said awkwardly. Kakashi waved nonchalantly as he held up the planter with the oxalis.

“Thought I might give you a good luck charm for your big day.”

Sakura stuttered over her words, straightening out her skirt one last time as she approached him, taking the plan and putting it on her desk. “

“Thank you.. You didn’t have to.” the pinkette smiled.

“Well it’s the least I could do,” Kakashi countered. Then all three of them fell into an awkward silence.

“Well…” Sakura said as if to make it less awkward.
“Might as well get into place. I’ll see you two later?” She said, exiting the office.

Both Kakashi and Itachi let go of the breath they were holding before they stared each other down. It was apparent Itachi wasn’t having any of it today, his eyes flashing red then going back to black in a thinly veiled threat.

“A little hawk told me about your last… what do you guys call it… “Get together”. I would appreciate it if you didn’t make it so obvious.”

Kakashi nodded his head.
“I have no idea what you’re talking about.” He shrugged, feigning ignorance for the moment.

“Here’s the thing… you’re her sensei. You are also the hokage… you seriously shouldn’t even be humoring it. It’s unprofessional and bound to make someone angry. Not just me, apparently it would alienate your team. So please…” Itachi said before walking past Kakashi to leave.

Once Itachi left Kakashi alone in Sakura’s office, he sighed.

For some reason, that whole display stirred something in Kakashi, something that told him he needed to step in before Itachi’s claws were deeper into what was his. Taking a deep breath, Kakashi turned to leave. He had to make it to the ceremony to give a speech, and knowing that he had to dedicate so many minutes to talking about how much he admires his little cherry blossom was going to kill him.

Chapter Text

The room was quiet. Kakashi woke up to noise in his kitchen. He was surprised but– this wasn’t his room. He got up from the queen sized bed he apparently fell asleep on, making his way out to the table. There was the face again… The pale skin, the purple diamond but this time… soft green eyes full of love and wanting

“Good morning, Kakashi!”

The voice was all too familiar, something he had heard many times before for many years
Tonight he was able to pin the voice it belonged to.
Kakashi looks out the window to see cherry blossoms floating past them, the same shade of pink that has been haunting his thoughts and dreams as of late.

This.. woman… came over to him, using her admirable strength to pull the chair away from the table, one leg moving to straddle him, her hands on his shoulders, a gaze of intent looking down at him. With a smile she leaned forward and…

That’s as far as the dream got lately.

And it told Kakashi what he needed to do.

Kakashi was in his office for the afternoon, staring at the missive that went straight to his desk, which meant that it was meant for either Naruto or Sasuke, but Kakashi had other plans. It was one of those missions that would take a while, that would keep one of them out of the village and into possible danger that only they could handle, but he had another idea.

It was petty of him.

It was really petty of him… but he had faith that Itachi would come back unscathed… or at least he hoped so, but for now it wasn’t his problem.

There was a knock at the door, the hokage knowing who was on the other side. He felt Itachi’s chakra even before he made it to the tower, but he wasn’t going to make a big deal about it.

“Enter.” Kakashi said, his voice monotone, unbothered about what he was going to do.

Itachi walked in, his face blank but it was obvious he didn’t want to be there. It was obvious that their last encounter had bugged him enough to make Sakura actually listen to Itachi and only come around him when she was with either Sasuke or Naruto, making getting alone time with Sakura a little hard to do at the moment.

“Hokage-sama.” Itachi addressed Kakashi, nodding his head.

“Good. You’re here. I have a mission for you.” Kakashi said. After Itachi nodded his head, he continued.

“You are to go to Tsukigakure and try to figure out some things. There’s talks of a coup happening so the Tsukikage, who is a part of the Edo family, had requested someone to step in and help them. One small family against a whole village, you’d understand that… correct?” You are to protect them and their doujutsu wielders, and try to stop the coup. Once you’re done, report back to me so we can come up with a plan where this won’t happen again.”

Itachi’s eyes widened slightly.
“Doujutsu users… I didn’t know that people outside of Konoha and Kumo had a doujutsu…”

“Comes to show you don’t know everything. This is going to be a long mission, so if you need to bring someone with you, tell me who and we can see if we can spare them.”

Itachi knew what game Kakashi was playing, but his duty to the village overrides whatever feelings he has about the hokage at the moment.

“Okay… I might need to bring someone with me. I request Sakura.” Itachi offered, trying to play the same game Kakashi was playing.

“Unfortunately, we can’t spare her at the moment. She is helping run the clinic right now. How about you take your brother? At least the two of you can get work done. For all I know, if you took Sakura with you, you’d have your hands all over each other and ask her to do things that aren’t in her best interest.” Kakashi smiled underneath his mask, trying to seem more innocent than he was leading on.

Itachi didn’t say anything, but he could admit that Kakashi got him in check. Itachi nodded his head and agreed.
“Fine, I’ll take Sasuke, but you have to do one thing for me.”

“Anything,” Kakashi said, leaning back in his chair.

“Stay away from Sakura.”

“Except that.” Kakashi sighed.
“Here’s the thing…” he said, leaning forward, his fingers intertwined. Kakashi was winning this mini fight. He hasn’t won the war yet, but he will get there and get what’s his.

“You can either do this mission… with your brother, come back unscathed and I’m able to be around my adorable students… actually, that’s all you can do. You see, Itachi, I know you and I know your sense of duty to this village. You’re going to accept this mission anyway and you're going to let me do my job here. And I will see my student and you won’t be here to stop me. But I can at least be nice about it and say that I won’t see her alone and that I will have someone chaperone. Is that okay? I mean, that’s what you asked of Sakura last week, wasn’t it?” He said.

Checkmate… Hatake 2- Uchiha 1…

Itachi took a deep breath and sighed.

“Fine.. .you win this round. I know you’re cheering yourself on in your head… But if I come back to hear you overstepped, there will be consequences.” Itachi said quietly.

“Oh now no, Itachi-kun. An Uchiha threatening a Hokage… that would cause an uproar… just do your mission and come back once you’ve stopped the coup.” Kakashi said. Itachi took the hint and turned to leave. He paused at the door one last time before closing it. Kakashi swore his eyes flashed red again.

Too bad your eyes don't scare me… He chuckled to himself, glad he won that small fight. Now, he would have to implement the second part of his plan. And that would be later in the week.

Chapter Text

It’s been a week since Kakashi sent Itachi on that mission. He felt like it was a victory since now it meant that he was able to be around Sakura without Itachi’s nose up her as… or so the thought.

When he walks to and from his quarters to his office, he would see a crow somewhere with tiny red eyes, which meant that Itachi was looking after him but he wasn’t phased. Technically, Itachi told Sakura that he wanted her to be with someone when she was around him, and he can technically do that. It doesn’t matter anyway. If she knew that Itachi was sent on a mission with an unknown end date, she would be here and question Kakashi, thinking that her former sensei would be kind enough to give her details that Itachi wouldn’t have given to her. Either way, he was getting what he wanted and he was confident it was going to happen.

Kakashi heard footsteps coming close to his office door. He felt for the chakra signature and sighed, thinking it was Sakura. Unfortunately, that powerhouse on the other side of the door was Naruto. Before Naruto even knocked on the door, Kakashi called out to him.

“Enter!” He said, loud enough for Naruto to hear.

The door opened and Naruto with his big, goody smile stepped in, wrapped arm rubbing the back of his neck.

“Oy, it’s lunch time. Are you busy?” Naruto asked. Kakashi sighed, rubbing his hand with his face.
“As much as I would love to get ramen with you, I can’t. I’m waiting for something.”

“--Waiting for what? That’s weird… you try and do anything to leave your office.. Is it something important?” Naruto kept his questions up, but before Kakashi could answer, the door opened as Sakura came in. The aura she had about her seemed like she didn’t want to play any games right now.

“Hokage-sama.” She said, nodding her head.
“Where did you send Itachi? And why did he have to go with Sasuke? And why the hell did he tell me that the mission would take an undetermined amount of time?” She asked in quick succession.

Kakashi chuckled, feeling a little nervous. As much as he wanted her to be there, she didn’t expect her to be mad. The hokage cleared his throat and looked up at Naruto.
“Maybe some other time,” he said. Naruto looked at Kakashi as if he wanted an answer as well.

“Look… the mission is classified, and I can't give you any information. Instead of yelling at me, you can be kinder, Sakura-chan.” He smiled underneath his mask.

Sakura huffed but what he said was able to calm her down for the moment.

“Fine.” She said, but it was obvious that the conversation wasn’t over with.

“How is the clinic going?” Kakashi asked Sakura after a minute of silence. Sakura seemed to soften after the question, Kakashi happy to have placated her for the moment. She smiled and nodded her head.
“Good… good. It’s originally why I came here, but Itachi was leaving when I had the guts to come here.”

Kakashi responded with a nod of his head, asking her to continue.

“I would ask Itachi or Sasuke, but they are very secretive about clan stuff. Just… is there any other way to unlock the sharingan? One way that won’t torture them for the rest of their lives?”

Kakashi thought to himself at the moment.
“In all honesty, it was unlocked before I got Obito’s eye. Apparently though, it unlocked when he saw me get hurt, then it further unlocked when… What happened to Rin happened.”

He knew the look he had on his face was probably something that showed off he was uncomfortable talking about it, but he genuinely wanted to help Sakura. As much as he was trying to woo her, the kage wanted to see her succeed in every endeavor she pursued. It was just the icing on the cake to know that he was the one helping her right here and now.

“But… don’t go asking any and all Uchiha you run into. It could be something simple to you, but it was life ending for them. That’s probably why Itachi or Sasuke doesn’t want to talk about it.” Kakashi concluded.

“Anyone up for some ramen?” He asked, Naruto finally getting excited. The blond raised a fist in the air and smiled.

“It’s on Kaka-sensei!” He said. Sakura rolled her eyes, but looked at Kakashi softly.

“We can talk later when Naruto is gone.” She said quietly. Kakashi nodded.

I might get alone time with her soon enough… He said to himself as he got up to grab his robes.

“But, if i’m paying then one bowl each, Okay Naruto?”

After the… ramen adventure, Kakashi and Sakura decided to take a walk through the village. They were enjoying each other’s silence like always until Sakura began to speak up.

“I’m sorry about the other day.” Sakura said quietly.

Kakashi blinked, feigning ignorance.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about…”

So she didn’t know I watched..

“ I didn’t mean to run off so quickly. It wasn’t like you caught us in the middle of something.” She said quickly. Even if Kakashi didn’t watch what they did, what she had hinted at was as clear as day.

“What you said is incriminating… Was I about to walk in on something?”

Sakura’s cheeks turned red, something that Kakashi can admit he had always enjoyed.

“Well… don’t tell anyone but maybe?” She chuckled nervously.
“Either way, I feel like I was being rude, running off the way I did. And I want to thank you for the flowers… so if there’s anything you want to do, it's on me.”

Kakashi’s thoughts strayed a little. Having the reminder of Itachi’s small threat but he disregarded it for now. Sakura was offering and he wasn’t a rude person to turn down such a thing.

“Fine… we can just go out for drinks if you’d like.” Kakashi said, taking her up on her offer.

Sakura hesitated, probably thinking of Itachi's warning, he assumed.
“That’s fine, but Naruto comes with us.”

Kakashi sighed, deciding to be open about what he saw the other day.
“I… might have overheard what Itachi so kindly suggested.” he finally admitted, a sigh escaping his lips. Sakura’s face once again became red as she looked ahead.

“Why didn’t you say anything?”

“Honestly, I wanted to hear why he proposed that kind of suggestion. I haven’t done anything untoward, have I?” Kakashi questioned, wondering if Sakura even noticed the way he looked at her lately.

“Of course not! You never would in the first place. Besides, I think I would have noticed if my sensei had nasty thoughts like that… which is why I’m wondering why Sasuke would have told Itachi that anyway…” Sakura admitted with a shrug. They went silent again as they walked, both of them standing close. To the people on the outside, they looked like a leader and subordinate, Teacher and student. No one had any clue about what was on Kakashi’s mind.

Kakashi doesn't know why he decided to say this. Maybe this tiny fake hint would push Sakura in the right direction.
“Maybe Sasuke is jealous?”

Sakura laughed, her arm going to her stomach as she tried to control herself in public.
“Why– Why would he be jealous?”

“Come on, why wouldn’t he be? You were all over him for years, and I mean years , and then when he turned you down, you went straight to his brother and he got a glimpse of what it could have been with you.”

That was an asspull, Hatake. She isn’t going to believe that…

Sakura finished laughing as she took Kakashi into consideration.

“Maybe.. I can see that… but I don’t believe it.” She concluded.

Kakashi shrugged. Maybe the earworm would settle and Sakura would believe it eventually.
They walked past the line that led to the Hokage Mountain and Kakashi had an idea.
“When do you have to be back at work?”

“Honestly? I took the week off. Itachi wanted to take me out of the village for a weekend. I just took the week off because I had the time to do it and Tsunade-sama is on my back about taking more time off to myself. Why? What’s up?”

Kakashi looked around, seeing there was a bar nearby. He took Sakura's hand and walked over to the building. Once there he asked for a bottle of their finest wine and two glasses if they could spare it. The owner gave it up, no charge, because of course ‘you are the hokage, we would be  honored to do so!’ Kakashi felt bad and put money on the bar. Passed over the glasses to Sakura, who was giggling the whole time and Kakashi had to admit that it was a great sound. He liked seeing her this relaxed.

He took her hand once more, taking the bottle of wine to where the line of spectators were. Once they noticed who he and Sakura were, they let him cut the line.

“What are you doing, Kaka-sensei?”

“You’ll see…” Kakashi said, not even hinting at what he was doing. Once they were at the front of the line, he smiled and let go of Sakura’s hand.
“Follow me.”

Using Chakra, he began to run up the side of his face. Sakura laughed and followed behind closely. When they were on the top, he stopped what he was doing and sat on top of his head. Sakura stopped as well, walking over to sit herself beside him.

“So… we are drinking wine on top of your head? Do you take all of your dates here?” Sakura asked, placing a glass on a flat part of ‘him.’

“I have before, yes. And she was impressed.” Kakashi winked, grabbing one of the glasses, making sure to pour an ample enough wine in it. He handed the glass over and did the same wit the second glass though he kept it to himself.

Sakura took a sip.
“Red wine… I’m surprised you remembered.”

“I did… though I didn't ask for red wine. I just said the best. Now, what I’m about to do, you saw nothing, okay?”

Sakura was a little confused but once he took his mask down, she stared at him in awe before blushing and looking away to give him privacy. Kakashi sighed loudly.

“You can look, just don’t tell Naruto or Sasuke. If either of them really wanted to, they’d be able to pull it off this time.” He winked, going to sip at the wine.

The pinkette shook her head and smiled.
“Well, who ever knew you were so handsome under there?” She joked, her cheeks still crimson.

“Only a few people knew… Yamato, Itachi had seen my face.. Ayame–”

“Ayame? The noodle girl? How in the world did she–”

“Sakura, how many times did I take you to Ichiraku and eat there? I did have to take my mask off to eat, I just did it quickly so you guys didn’t see it. Ayame was just lucky enough to catch it before I pulled it up.” He said, seeing that Sakura was finished with her wine. He motioned for her to bring her glass close to him. He topped her off before going to sip at his slowly. Her eyes were on his face. He noticed her eyes wondering as if she was trying to commit it to memory before she sighed.

“I’m sorry… for what you overheard.” Sakura said quietly.
“I don’t know what prompted Itachi to say that, but I’ll talk to him.”

Kakashi nodded  his head, taking her apology though deep down, he wished that she didn’t even consider not being around him. He could at least admit that if she did what Itachi asked of her, he would have died a little on the inside.

“It’s okay. When people are fed lies, they get defensive.” His expression did not reveal anything about the lie he just told her. At first he felt bad for throwing Sasuke under the bus like that but, hey, Sasuke started it first.

Sakura smiled, holding up her glass as if she wanted to toast something.
Kakashi held his glass up as well when she cleared her throat.

“To a life long friendship!” She said, Kakashi nodded and their glasses clinked before they both took a drink.

Deep down, Kakashi didn’t want to hear that, but when he saw one more crow with beady red eyes, he smirked, making sure to drown the rest of his glass. He won’t hear the end of it, but he’s gone until further notice. It’ll give him all the time in the world with Sakura.

Chapter Text

Ever since the moment on the Hokage Mountain, Sakura had been around a lot.
And Kakashi was ecstatic to finally get what he wanted.

He made sure to keep his distance emotionally when they were together, but she actually went out of her way to be with him. When she needed a quiet place to do paperwork and not be bothered, she went to his office and worked on it. When she wanted any sort of company, she would go over to his living quarters and they would play card games to distract her. Sometimes they would just sit and drink wine together like they did the first time during this development. All in all he was happy.

The only thing Kakashi wasn’t happy about was the random crow that would show up and watch the both of them. Kakashi would have pointed it out to Sakura, but he was afraid that if he did, she would stop coming around.

On one particular night, the village had a thunderstorm and it was a pretty bad one; The wind toppled over trees and some parts of the village even lost electricity. Kakashi was lucky that the hokage quarters had a generator and apparently Sakura remembered it. It was around midnight when she knocked on his door. Kakashi opened it and was surprised to see her, especially in a storm like this. Kakashi stepped to the side to let the pink headed medic in. He noticed that she was wearing particularly white pajamas, and the rain didn’t leave much to the imagination.

“Sorry… the electricity is out at our place. Do you mind?”

Kakashi shook his head no. He went into his room and grabbed an oversized shirt for Sakura to wear. It was grey and would hide anything Sakura didn’t want to show him. She thanked him and went to change. Minutes later she came out of the bathroom, the shirt going to her knees.

“Do this often?” She joked. Kakashi chuckled along with her.

“Youd be surprised to know that I don’t have many women over.” He said, holding his hand out for the wet clothes she had in her hand. Sakura surrendered the wet clothes and the kage went to watch and dry them for her. Once the clothes were in and going, he came back and looked over. He was pretty sure it was obvious but she didn’t say anything or even indicated that she had noticed.
“Tea?” He asked, walking towards the kitchen. Sakura nodded her head and answered with a ‘hn.’

“Careful, you’re beginning to sound like an Uchiha.” Kakashi joked. Sakura rolled her eyes and laughed lightly as he began to make the tea.
“ So why here and not Naruto’s place?”

“He spent the night with Hinata. Or at least Ino told me they were going out. Plus I think Naruto and I are on the same grid so we couldn’t have been at his place anyway. You know, wouldn’t be any electricity there either.”

Kakashi nodded, turning around as the water began to heat up. Sakura sat herself on the couch, crossing her legs at her ankles but the way she was posed was alluring. Kakashi stared at her and smiled underneath his mask. Even though he knew he was pushing his luck, he went over and sat beside her, him in a simple pair of grey sweatpants and a white shirt, mask off of course.

“So… I assumed you’d wear your mask to bed.” She joked. Kakashi sighed and shrugged.

“I used to but then in my old age I snored in my sleep. Kind of hard to breathe with a mask on if I snore, correct?”

Sakura thought his words over carefully, the medic in her screaming loudly.
“Sounds like you might have sleep apnea.”

Kakashi shook his head.
“If I did, they would have found that out during my physical, wouldn’t they?”

“Not if they didn’t do a sleep study. I’m being serious. If you are having problems sleeping, you should stop by. I can help.” She said, hoping he wouldn’t protest. Kakashi shook his head once again.

“I don’t think that is the case but I’ll keep it on the backburner. If it gets worse, I’ll let you know.” he winked. He noticed Sakura stopped breathing for a second but he didn’t say anything.

They fell into silence, Sakura tapping out an unknown rhythm on her thigh. The clock on the wall cut through the peace but it wasn’t unwelcome.

“...so… how’s the clinic going?” The kage asked if only to keep his thoughts to himself. She came to him for comfort and he wanted to be that kind of person, but having her alone in the room with him made him antsy. This is what he wanted..right?

“Good… good.” She said quietly. She sighed and rested her head on his shoulder. Without a second thought, Kakashi wrapped an arm around her shoulder.

“Do you not like thunderstorms?” He asked, not knowing this about her. Which didn’t make any sense… he had known her for years and Sakura has never brought that up about herself.

“No… I just don’t like being alone.” She admitted.
“I get why you can’t tell me where Itachi went, but I don’t like being alone.”

Kakashi stayed silent reveling in the touch. He could smell that she used the shampoo that she had since she was a kid, but there was a hint of amber, as if she put on a spritz of perfume sometime during the day. Which means she probably takes a shower in the morning and–

Kakashi didn’t let the rest of his thoughts wander, but when she sighed and curled up against him even more, he felt… calm. As if this was meant to be.

“...why are you with Itachi anyway?” Kakashi asked quietly. Sakura thought over her words, trying to come up with the best answer.

“He’s… safe..”

“Safe?”

“Yeah…” Sakura answered with a sigh.

“The night of the opening, we got into an argument over what he… Suggested. I always told myself that after that fiasco with Sasuke that I wouldn't do things to appease a man, and to have him tell me who and who I couldn’t hang out with due to an insecurity or whatever the hell Sasuke is trying to pull off, it just… irked me.”

Sakura seemed like she was on auto pilot, her hand reaching out to rest on Kakashi’s thigh. Kakashi looked at where her hand was and took a deep breath.

“Truth is… You’re an important person in my life. I would hate to give you up just because Itachi said so. As much as I love my relationship with him, the more I think about it, I… don’t want to give you up. And I wouldn't.”

Kakashi nodded, smiling gently as she spoke to him. He knew she was being genuine about it.
“I’m… glad to hear that.” He said, his other hand going to rest against the top of her head. Sakura sucked in a breath but she let it go instantly, smiling as they sat there.

“...are you going to leave him? Just for that?” Just for me? He said to himself.

Sakura chuckled but she shook her head.
“I can’t. I’m indebted to his family. They funded my dream. It’d be a slap to the face if I up and left him just because he asked me something that I’m not willing to do. He can leave me if he’s that bothered by you… but something doesn’t make sense… I thought it over. I don’t think Sasuke is trying to break us up.. So is what he said… true?”

Now it was Kakashi’s turn to think over his words. He carefully went through all the scenarios in his head.
If I explain that, there is a possibility that she might get disgusted with me, but then being truthful with her is probably the best way to go about this. She said she wasn’t willing to lose me… maybe that would be the same even in this situation…

“There is… some truth to it.” He admitted.

Sakura went silent, the clock ticking now unwelcomed.

“How long…?”

Kakashi sighed.
“Does it matter?”

“Yes. I’d like to know.. How long?” Sakur asked once again, her gaze in front of her.

Kakashi squeezed her hand gently, words finally coming to him.

“Remember your eighteenth birthday, when I took you home?” Kakashi asked. Sakura nodded her head, knowing what he was talking about.

That was life.

That was a definite lie.

But if she knew it was anytime before that, then she’d just leave him and he didn’t want that.

“Well, you told me that if I wasn’t your sensei, that you would have asked me out already. I’ve thought about it on and off since then and when I saw you at the gala dancing with Itachi, I got… Jealous…” He sighed.
“Look, I didn’t mean for it to happen. It just…did.” He went on. The white haired man thought that Sakura would pull away after that, that she would go home, but she didn’t;  grounding his thoughts by tightening her grip on his hand. There wasn’t any malice to it. He relaxed a little, feeling better about this whole thing, finally telling the truth.

Sakura took a deep breath.

“...after the war for me…”

Kakashi’s eyes widened. He turned to look at her but she didn't face him, her gaze still ahead of her.

“We just spent a lot of time together before you became Hokage and it was nice. But I thought that you’d never look at me like that, and that since you were in line to be in charge that you’d back off or just be disgusted… but I can’t leave Itachi, you don’t understand how much that would crush him. I know he’s not petty enough to pull the money, but his parents are and they will.” She concluded quietly.

Kakashi nodded.
“So I told you all of that for nothing,” He laughed, but there was a tone of bitterness to it and he knew Sakura would catch it.

“No… not for nothing. Just… give me time.” Sakura said lightly
“Look at me.”

Kakashi kept his hand on hers, him turning in his seat to face Sakura. There was deep regret in his gaze but a tiny glimmer of hope was there behind it.

Sakura took a deep breath and faced Kakashi as well. She brought her hand off of Kakashi’s lap and cupped his cheek, her thumb rubbing circles on his cheek bone.

“You really do look good underneath the mask,” She chuckled before confidently leaning in, pressing her lips against him.

Kakashi was overjoyed when she deepened the kiss. He relaxed against her, the kiss grounding him. She moved her hand from his cheek and placed it back on his lap, exciting Kakashi even more when she opened her mouth for him to claim. Kakashi couldn’t help but close his eyes and melt into her, mapping her with his tongue to make a claim and to commit it to memory. The teakettle they both forgot began to whistle and it scared Sakura. She jumped back, accidentally biting Kakashi’s tongue. He hissed but it really didn’t hurt. He was simply surprised.

“We shouldn’t be doing this…” Sakura sighed.

“Th– this did not happen… okay? Not because I’m ashamed or anything, but I can’t… I can’t hurt Itachi.”

Kakashi ran a hand through his hair, sighing loudly.

“I’m going to go home, and I was there the whole time…”

Kakashi nodded his head, keeping silent until she got up from the couch. With the speed he was known for, he reached out for her hand, stopping Sakura from moving. She stood there for a moment before Kakashi spoke up finally.

“...stay…” He said quietly

“What?”

“Stay… we don’t have to do anything... I just want company.”

Sakura’s green eyes softened. He gently pulled her hand away and sat back on the couch.

“Okay…” She whispered lightly

Feeling better, Kakashi put his head on her shoulder, reveling in the fact that she was close.

The kettle whistled in the background, long forgotten for now.

Chapter Text

Kakashi was surprised that his plan had worked.

Sakura came by his office to see him every other day this month while Itachi and Sasuke were gone. Sometimes Naruto would join them but lucky for the both of them, the blond was too oblivious to the signals they were giving each other; little brushes here, looks that lasted too long there. Sometimes she just laughed at his no-so-funny jokes but he didn’t care if she thought it was funny or not. He was simply happy to be close. It was perfect!

Until it wasn’t.

Kakashi was sitting in his office when he heard light stomping outside of his office. He was curious to know what was going on, but he didn’t care. He was too happy at the moment to even care about what it could be, but when he heard Sasuke’s voice outside of the door, Kakashi took the smile he had all month off his face.

Both of the brothers entered the office without knocking, making Kakashi think that either one of them or both of them were annoyed. He straightened up in his seat, intertwined his fingers and kept his comments to himself. Itachi stared Kakashi down, though his face was void of emotion. Sasuke on the other hand kept quiet… not that Sasuke was a talkative person in the first place. Kakashi decided he had to be the one to break the silence.

“How did the mission go?” He asked, glad he had his mask on.

Itachi took a calming breath but continued on with his report.
The coup was stopped. The Edo family is safe. There were a few casualties and a clinic was burnt down, but everything turned out fine.” Itachi said, placing a scroll on Kakashi’s desk. ITachi then looked at Sasuke, nodding his head towards the door.

“Can you excuse us?” He asked his younger brother. Sasuke looked like he wanted to stay for whatever conversation they were going to have, looking at Itachi as if to say ‘don’t hurt him’ before turning to leave, his cloak making a small sound as he left the office.

Itachi straightened up, his aura a bit more menacing than it was minutes ago.
“You know I have eyes, correct?”

“No, Itachi, I never would have guessed.” Kakashi deadpanned.

Itachi pinched the bridge of his nose.
“No. I literally had eyes in this village the whole time I was gone. I know what you were up to…even after I warned you… why?”

Kakashi sighed, trying to show indifference but it was impossible with Itachi drilling him at the moment.
“Why what?”

Itachi started Kakashi down as if he wanted to say more knowing that his guards had to be somewhere close.
“I asked one thing of you and you couldn’t even manage to do that.”

“Well… if you must know she came to me, I didn’t go to her. So maybe you need to be having this conversation with Sakura and not me.” Kakashi concluded. He could tell that Itachi wanted to argue that, but there wasn’t anything to argue. It really was a conversation to have with the woman they’re currently arguing over. Itachi let go of a breath through his nose telling Kakashi that he was annoyed.

“Look, I enjoyed this battle of wits of sorts, I honestly have to get back to work–”

“We both know, you’d do anything to avoid work. So I’m going to take my time and make it clear. Leave Sakura alone… please.”

Kakashi sighed heavily. He was over this conversion already. It wasn’t much of one, but he was already exhausted by this afternoon’s events. He knew he shouldn’t say anything else but the word vomit was strong today.

“Or what?” He questioned, leaning back in his chair, his gaze showed he wasn’t threatened by Itachi, but as much as he was unthreatened, there was no way he could fight him and keep his life.

“I would tell you, but there are ears in this room and I don’t want them to think my clan is starting another coup.” Was all Itachi said before turning around to leave.

The kage’s eyes were on Itachi as he left through the door. There was some muffled talk outside of the door before he heard the people leave. Kakashi rubbed his face with his hand, turning his seat to look out the window. He saw Sasuke and Itachi walking across outside of his window. The two were whispering something to each other. The only way that Kakashi knew was that their lips were moving ever so slightly. He then turned his seat one more to face the door, placing his face in his hands because he felt stressed.

As much as Itachi could wipe the floor with him, he really wasn’t afraid of him. If there was one thing worth fighting for it was that sweet, pink headed beauty. It was worth getting into Itachi’s crosshairs.. But even Kakashi knew that it wouldn’t be worth it if he didn’t even get the prize in the end. And with Itachi making thighs hard, he wasn’t sure how he’d be able to do it.

Maybe I meddled enough… Kakashi thought to himself, thinking that he had probably put Sakura through enough trouble as it is, but then again he doesn’t know what Itachi is saying to her behind closed doors. When he hung out with Sakura this past month, they never talked about her and Itachi’s relationship or how it worked out for them, so he wasn’t sure what all she was being fed if she was in the first place.

The hokage sighed one last time before getting up to grab his robes. He needed a drink and a place to think, so to his beloved bar he went.

Chapter Text

Tenzou was back in the village for the weekend, and this time Kakashi was going to take advantage of it.

It’s been a couple of weeks since Itachi came back from his mission. Kakashi hadn’t seen Sakura since either… and it was driving him crazy. He was sitting in a booth at the bar with Tenzou, who was nursing a bottle of beer. He listened to what Kakashi had to say, but he didn’t know what else to do about his predicament.

“You know… even if it was a small threat, you shouldn’t tolerate it.” Tenzou said quietly.

“Technically he didn’t threaten me. He just asked me to stay away from Sakura.”

“...and you won’t because your ego won’t allow you to?” Tenzou questioned, wondering why Kakashi didn’t leave her alone in the first place.

“No… because…” He didn’t have a good answer for this. He had rehearsed that answer just in case Sakura had asked him but he didn’t know what to tell Tenzou so he simply shrugged lazily.

Tenzou shook his head slowly.
“I’m the last person you should be talking about this to. I mean, come on! I was on a team with Sakura and Itachi… and I kind of want them to work out. Itachi deserves a little bit of happiness.”

“What about me?”

“Well you had your chance and you didn’t take it.” He reminded Kakashi ever so bluntly. The white haired man simply took a sip of his whiskey, the burn numbing his mind for the moment.

“Where did all of this come from anyway? I know you have liked Sakura for a moment, but what exactly spurred this on?” The brunet questioned carefully, eyeballing Kakashi while he took a swig of his beer.

“I– I don’t know. Just the way she was all over Itachi at the gala made me wish it was me… I think?” the kage answered, running a hand through his hair.

“And what exactly did she say when you finally confessed your… admiration… of her?”

“Just that she can’t leave Itachi. She said that it would make everything look bad and his parents would rescind the money they donated to her clinic. I don’t blame her. She worked very hard for it and I don’t want to ruin it for her.”

Tenzou nodded, understanding what Kakashi was saying.

“I think you just need to back off a little bit. If she comes to you, then she does. And I’d support it but if you actively pursue her while she’s with Itachi, then that just makes the both of you look bad to the Uchiha. I don’t want either to be honest.”

Kakashi didn’t say anything for the moment. He was about to get up and pay for his drink when he smelled the floral shampoo she was so accustomed to. Tenzou must have smelled it, too, because he stiffened up, his eyes on Sakura as she approached.

“I thought I'd find you here…” She said quietly, her eyes darting back and forth between Tenzou and Kakashi.

“Hey, Yamato-taichou… do you mind?” He asked. Tenzou nodded his head and looked at Kakashi, almost glaring at him as he got up from his seat. It was like he was saying “Try to not screw it up” or something. Or at least that’s what Kakashi was getting from it.

As soon as Tenzou left, Kakashi focused his attention on Sakura. She was wearing a red dress, something a little too fancy for a bar.

“Night out?”

Sakura sighed.
“Yes, but it ended up in an argument.” Sakura muttered under her breath, the look on her face telling him she was hurt.

Kakashi waved down the bartender, asking for another saucer for Sakura, hoping she would continue.

“It was over you.” She said simply, putting her forehead into her hands, her elbows holding her up.

“How did this get so.. Fucked up?” She asked, a bit of frustration coming from her voice.
“We kissed… he saw and he’s not happy about it… but to get mad weeks later? I understand it’s not something to easily get over, but I just…” she sighed. The bartender brought over the sake dish, placing it in front of Sakura. She smiled and thanked him as Kakashi filled her dish.

“Don’t worry, it's the strong stuff you like.”

“Thank you” Sakura smiled, taking a sip. She hissed at the burn a little but she leaned back in her seat, relaxing slowly.

“What exactly did you argue about anyway?” Kakashi asked.

Sakura paused, downing the rest of her sake.
“Well he was more curious about why I went over to your place in the first place. He thinks I'm lying about the village not having any electricity.”

“...does he not trust you?” Kakashi questioned, pouring her more sake.

Now he doesn’t and it sucks.” Sakura said, tearing up a little.
“I never had anyone tell me they didn’t trust me. And now my own boyfriend is the first to say it! What am I going to do?”

Kakashi nodded his head. He wanted to say what was on his mind, what he wanted to do so Itachi had a real reason not to trust her, but he didn’t want to take advantage of the situation.. Not right now anyway.

“I should really do something to make him not trust me.. Huh?” She scoffed, rolling her eyes.

Kakashi was elated to hear that. He wanted her to rebel a little bit, but he thought of what Tenzou had said.

Maybe I should let them be…

Sakura drank more of her sake, smiling as she relaxed even more.

“I wanted to come and see you but I really have been busy. What have you been up to?” She asked.

“You know, being bored out of my mind, ruling the world, the usual.” He said, smirking under his mask. The medic laughed at that, making Kakashi smile a little.

“Now, you can stay with me as long as you need, anytime you need to get away from Itachi.” He said, drinking the rest of the sake in his saucer.
“I can say I don’t mind the company. Though Yamato is going to be mad at me…”

“Why would he be mad at you?”

“Maa, Sakura-chan. I’m not the type to air out people’s laundry. Let's just say he’s waited a couple of months to see me and we’re not doing anything tonight.”

Sakura nodded her head, thinking she understood what he had meant.
“Well you can meet up with him tomorrow. When does he leave?”

“Sunday, actually, so we have about five more days left. He’s also staying with me so there’s that.” Kakashi picked up the bottle of sake and swirled it to see how much he had left. Once he realized he only had enough for one more drink, he used it to top off Sakura, the medic thanking him with a smile before sipping at it. Afterwards, she began to frown which, in turn, made Kakashi frown in return.

“What are we doing?” Sakura asked through a murmur.

“I think we are having drinks together.” He answered as if it were obvious.

“Well, no shit, but we,” she motioned between the both of them.

“Itachi has a problem with you, so what do I do after an argument? Run to you…”

Kakashi knew where she was going with this, thinking she was going to end everything... Whatever it was. He didn’t even know either.
“Well, I feel as if you would have done it anyway, even if you were or weren’t with Itachi.”

Sakura looked at him, wanting him to continue this little theory of his.
“When you have problems, you run to either me or Naruto. We’re your safe space. The difference between me and him is that you admitted liking me in some sort of capacity that goes beyond our dynamic. I mean, as of recently, you–” He held up a finger.

“Came to me when your electric went out, thus needing the company because you were afraid–”

“I wasn’t afraid of any–”

“And now you came to me after you and Itachi had an argument.” He said, holding up a second finger.
“And you came to me when Sasuke didn’t want to be with you… and you always came to me when you had a hard lesson with Tsunade-sama… I’m your safe space.” He concluded.

The look of realization on Sakura's face was something Kakashi never thought he’d get out of her, so he was happy to see the expression. But then hearing her groan before rubbing her face with her hands made him go back to the frown he had earlier.

“Then what are we going to do about this?”

“I can’t answer that for you. All I know is that if Itachi has a problem with that, then you either need to not tell him you were with me or just leave him.” Kakashi shrugged, thinking that it was a good answer. He didn’t want to admit that they were extremely bad ideas, but she would listen to him in some sort of capacity.

The kage went into his pocket to pull out the ryo needed for the sake they had drank, Sakura was so confused when he got up from his seat.

“Come with me,” He said simply, walking towards the bar door knowing she would follow him, which is what she did. Sakura picked up the pace, making sure to walk beside him.

“Where are we going?”

“To my place.”

Sakura laughed but didn’t say anything as they walked, Kakashi listening to the click of her heels. He was a little nervous, but he hoped she didn’t think he was going to take advantage of the situation.

Am I taking advantage? I mean she did just say that she had gotten into an argument with Itachi… but we aren’t going to do anything… though I really want to…

It didn’t take long to be at his carters, him unlocking the door and letting her in. Kakashi looked around to see who all was close, but all he noticed were his ANBU guards, which he knew weren't going to say anything to anyone.

Kakashi took his shoes off at the entrance, Sakura slipping hers off as well. He then went over to his liquor cabinet and grabbed his vintage whiskey he was gifted from the Raikage years ago. It was something that was coveted in Kumo. He grabbed two tumblers and walked over to the couch, motioning for Sakura to sit down.

“Can I borrow your clothes again? This dress is ridiculous…” She chuckled.

Kakashi put everything down on the coffee table, going inside to grab something she could fit. He brought it back and handed it over to her.
“You know where the bathroom is.”

Sakura nodded, going to change as Kakashi went to grab some ice for their drinks. Once both were finished, they met back at the couch; Sakura in an oversized, baggy tshirt, Kakashi in his classic black, sleeveless shirt and pants.

“I thought you said Yamato-taichou was going to be here?” She asked.

“He was supposed to be here, but he probably made himself scarce because I ditched him for you. It's okay. He will get over it.” The Rokudaime said, going to put the ice in the glasses then pouring the amber liquid into the tumblers, giving the both of them a healthy amount. Sakura sat herself down on the couch, grabbing a tumbler to take a sip.

“Oh, this is good…” She hummed, Kakashi pulling down his mask to show off the smile he had on his face since she came out in his clothes.

“You know, I’m liking the sight of you in my clothes. It’s only happened twice but I'm beginning to like it.” He complimented her, going to sit beside her. He grabbed his glass and began to sip at it.

“This is from Kumo, right?” Sakura asked. Kakashi was impressed that she knew. He raised a brow in question and she simply laughed.

“A had given Tsunade-sama some and she shared it with me on my twenty-first birthday.”

“And here I thought the three of us got you drunk on your twenty-first.” He said, remembering that night.

“Yes, but Tsunade-sama thought it would have been a good idea to pregame before we went bar hopping, but if I remember that night we just stayed at one bar and met up when we all could ever since.” Sakura said, sticking her tongue out teasingly.

“That, ma’am, is a dangerous game you’re playing,” He joked, referring to her sticking her tongue out. Sakura laughed, moving herself closer to rest her head on his shoulder, sticking her tongue out again before she began to giggle.

Kakashi was over the subtle teasing. After having a few drinks in him, he decided this was a very bad idea but he was going to do it anyway. He placed his glass on the coffee table, moving to wrap an arm around her to pick her up and place Sakura on his lap. She squealed, giggled then calmed down, wrapping her own arm around his shoulder.

“What are we doing?” She asked once again.

“I think you were subtly flirting with me and I am acting on it.” He said, Sakura turning her head to stare at him. They looked at each other for a moment before Sakura leaned in, pressing her lips against his, closing her eyes. She then moved herself to where she was straddling him, keeping a hold of her drink.

“You’re not drunk, are you?” He asked, making sure he wasn’t taking advantage of her. He knew he was taking advantage of this situation, but he had enough playing it safe.

“No, I know what I’m doing.” She said, moving to kissing where his neck and chin met. Kakashi sighed heavily, placing his hands on her hips to make sure she wouldn't fall since she was trying to balance herself on him while holding up a glass of whiskey.

Kakashi turned his head to look out of the window, making sure there weren’t any crows or hawks hanging around his windowsill.

“We don’t want to do this here…” He whispered, moving to kiss her neck. As much as he thought it was a bad idea, he didn’t want to stop. Kakashi looked up to Sakura from where he was, trying to gauge whether or not she wanted him to keep going since her breathing pattern had changed from relaxed to somewhat excited.

Sakura moved her head to expose more of her neck, a smirk on her face as if she was egging him on. He took the hint, going back to kissing down her neck to her what was exposed of her collarbone. Sakura apparently enjoyed it, sighing when his lips met her skin again. In a way, he didn’t like her being in his lap, knowing that she could feel what was going on below him. Once she figured it out, her eyes widened as she looked down to him.

“If you’re uncomfortable, then tell me now.” Kakashi said, going to suck on her skin where he just kissed.

Sakura took a grounding breath, closing her eyes, a moan slipping as Kakashi looked away to look at the mark he just made.

“Make sure you heal that before you go home..” He whispered under his breath. Sakura nodded her head, biting her lip as she thought.

“Take me to your bed.” Sakura spoke softly. Kakashi didn’t need to be told twice as he wrapped both of his arms around her waist, picking her up. He then carried her to his bedroom, shutting the door with his foot.

This may be a bad idea, but it’s what he wanted for ages now.

Kakashi woke up with a pounding headache, but he was surprised to hear the sound of someone moving around in the kitchen. He thought it was one of his dreams again, so he didn’t pay any attention to it, though he did get up to see what the noise was. When he got to the kitchen, he found Sakura at the stove with the kitchen table set.

“You’re awake!” She said, coming to walk over, motioning for Kakashi to sit down. Confused, he did just that, his eyes on Sakura out of confusion.

“You didn’t leave?” He asked. She shook her head no.
“I’m not that kind of person.” Sakura chuckled, using her impeccable strength to move his chair to make him face her. She then straddled him, placing her elbows on his shoulders, her hand going through his hair.

“Have a good night?” The pinkette asked with a sultry tone to her voice. Kakashi closed his eyes and took a calming breath, moving his head to look at her.

“I did…” He said. She leaned forward to kiss him, deep and loving, something that Kakashi had never felt before. She pulled away when the kettle began to whistle, getting out of his lap to go and make the tea.

“What’s on the agenda today?” She asked as she moved around the kitchen. Kakashi was still in shock, this whole domesticated thing as a little too much of a surprise. It was like his dream literally came true.

“Well, I’m going to send Pakun to tell everyone at the office that I’m going to take the day off. And then I’m going to stay home.” He answered as she walked over with some braised saury on a plate. She placed it in front of him with some rice and a pair of chop sticks.

“I think I’m going to take the day off, too. Last night was too good and I don’t want to go home yet.”

Kakashi thanked over his food and began to eat, his eyes on Sakura as she moved. She was still in his clothes from the night before and all he could do was eye her. He felt that no one could rip the smile off of his face. Sakura came back with the tea, sitting the cup down for him as she sat herself down in the other chair.

Kakashi continued to eat as he thought to himself when they went into silence.
Where do we go from here? I’m not sure what to do now… are we together? Is she going to break up with Itachi? I’m not sure what to do… it would kill me if she was still with Itachi after this…

Kakashi finished his food quickly, placing his chop sticks on the table in front of him. He looked over to Sakura, a smile on his face, but she was frowning, looking as if she was thinking too hard.

“Kakashi... What happened… can’t happen again.”

Kakashi’s heart dropped into the pit of his stomach. He knew it was coming but he wasn’t expecting it to happen just like that. He looked into Sakura’s eyes to notice a bit of shine to it, as though what she just said is killing her.

“So.. that’s it? You sleep with me after an argument you have with Itachi and you’re just going to end things?” He asked. Sakura shook her head.

“It’s not like that. I wasn’t using you–”

“Then what were you doing?”

“I’m sorry… I have feelings for you, I really do, but– I love Itachi more. Last night was probably the best I've ever had, but I can’t leave him. Not now.”

“Last time you said it was because you were afraid the clan would pull their funding. Is that still the case?”

Sakura didn’t say anything. Her gaze went down to the wooden floor of his quarters.
“That’s not only it… look.. If I could have both of you, I could, but he isn’t into that and he doesn't want to open our relationship.”

“...you’ve thought of that?” Kakashi questioned, pulling up the cloth to his mask.

“I have, and he said no. Technically it’s what we actually argued about.” She admitted.

Kakashi didn’t know what to think. On one hand, he wanted to kick her out of his place, never see her again but on the other hand…

“You weren’t looking for anything more than a fling, weren’t you?”

Sakura shook her head, answering that question with a simple ‘no,’

Kakashi was upset, but he couldn’t blame her. Maybe this was karma for all the time he’s done it to other people, like Tenzou. Maybe this was the universe’s way of getting him back.

“I can’t convince you, can I…?”

“...as of right now? No. You can’t” She answered.

“Maybe after the clinic is established, maybe then, but right now I can’t leave him.”

Kakashi wanted to argue it. He wanted to convince her to be with him, but if she made up her mind, then he’s not going to push it.

“Will our friendship change?” He asked faintly. She shook her head no.

“Our friendship will stay the same… but maybe we should see less of each other?” She offered.

Kakashi let go of the breath he didn’t know he was holding in, trying his best not to blow up.
“Well fuck.” He said.

“Look.. you’re a good friend and an amazing person, but–”

“But you’re putting Itachi and your clinic… before me.” He concluded.

“Don’t look at it that way–”

“How else am I supposed to look at it? Look, what if I can find a way to help fund your clinic after you leave Itachi? Besides, there is a chance he could convince his parents to not pull funding. At the Gala, Itachi explained why he wanted to do it in the first place. He fully believed in it. What if you do leave him and he doesn’t pull it? What then?”

“Then I wouldn't have a problem with doing so, but you can’t guarantee me that you’d find funding and he wouldn’t pull funding… there’s too many what if’s and too many unknowns for me to leave him.” Sakura explained, trying to tell Kakashi she was only being careful.

Kakashi sighed, getting up to put the dishes in the sink.
“Look… go home and think it over. Don’t make any rash decisions just yet.”

“Kakashi–”

“Please.. Just call me sensei from now on.” He said, trying to hide how hurt he was over this ordeal. Sakura didn’t say anything, simply going into his room to grab her dress and leave.

“I really do have feelings for you…” She concluded, grabbing her heels before going through the door for good.

Chapter Text

It's been months since Kakashi had seen Sakura since that fateful night. And it was the last time he was able to see her. As much as he wanted to think about it, he didn't. He wanted to keep his through free of her. So when he went out of the way to avoid her at all costs. It was as if Sakura had the same idea… or she finally listened to Itachi and stayed away from him. Hell, he even avoided the meetings they had once a week with the team to shoo their shit. It wasn’t until when he received an invitation to Sakura’s opening ceremony for the clinic.

The invitation came across his desk and he stared at it, noticing the pink blossom seal on the back of the envelope when he threw it away in the bin and caught it on fire. Shikamaru was the one who found it and sighed.

“So… you’re avoiding Sakura… why?”

The kage looked over to Shikarmau and shook his head as if it was none of his business.

Shikarmau wasn’t the stupid one. He noticed the way he looked at Sakura when she stopped by when she could. He tsked the Hokage and brought a chair up to his desk.

“No one is coming in, tell me… what happened?

Other than Tenzou, he could put his faith in Shikamazru of all people. So he went through all the accounts; How he began to develop feelings for her, the date on top of his head on the mountain, the night they spent together and if someone always ended with Itachi… and how it was the night they spent together where she decided to part ways.

Shikamaru listened, not in a judging way at all, before he spoke up.

“Did you think she was going to leave the love of her life?” Shikmamaru concluded.

“I would have been nice, but can see why she wouldn’t have wanted to anyway.”

Kakashi looked at him confused, trying to figure out where he was coming from. Shikarmaru continued.

“Look she had feelings for you, but it seemed like you had your chance. So do something for me.”
“Anything,” Kakashi said, leaning back in his chair.

“Stay away from Sakura.”

“Except that.” Kakashi sighed.

What Shikamaru said was right. Sighing, Kakashi got up for the day and ended his stint at the office to get ready for the opening ceremony.

“With the same tux he had on before, Kakashi found himself later that night dressed up and ready to… well not mingle. He stayed in his normal corner to nurse a tumbler of whiskey he had been all night. He blocked out the speeches that were given until Sakura gave them. It was full of hope and thank yous .It wasn’t until she thanked the Uchiha when he decided to blush off and not listen to that far of the trope.

He doesn't want to think of it this way, but he didn’t want to think of the Uchiha. One of them was the rea And the same on why he wasn’t with the love of his life at the moment and that put a damper on things. And he was the one who actually got what he wanted. Unless Kakashi was hallucinating., Itachi would glare at his way to say that he got the chick. Kakashi couldn’t take any more. He ordered another drink when a blonde haired woman approached him.

“Hey, Kaka-Sensei…” She said quietly.

Kakashi answered, “ Hello, Yamanaka-san” but didn't say anything else as their drink was made.

“What will you have?” He asked.  “Just a lemon drop, really.” She answered, the bartender bringing her her own for the event.

“Sakura made a mistake, you know.” Imo said under her breath.

“She came to me and told me her dilemma and I chose you but she chose Itachi because of the clinic. You know, any woman our age would be lucky to have you.” Ino winked before she grabbed her drink and went.

Kakashi’s eyes followed Ino, a smirk on his face before he shook his head. He wasn't over Sakura but he needed to get his whistle wet so to speak.

“Room 908, if you’re interested.” Ino called over her shoulder.

On one hand, he wanted to be there for Sakura, but she had made her choice and hadn’t seen him since they fucked that one night. But then… There was someone offering up something he had been looking for… well for the time being. After downing his whiskey at breakneck speeds. Hen needed to get over Sakura so why not try with someone who actually was unattached and see where it went.?

He placed his glass on the table and followed the Yamanaka out of the bar and to her room for the night.

If Sakura wants to be happy with Itachi, then he can be a free agent. Not a way to get over her, but only to see what was out there.
