Work Text:
Tanjirou's entire village knows about demons, slayers and all the hashira. They've been working for the Ubuyashiki family for a while now in order to make their little town a nice place for slayers to stay in and get the food they need.
Working for the Corps, even though he's still just a charcoal seller, has changed Tanjirou's life and his family's. His father died when he was young, that's why he had to take care of his siblings and his mother since he was able to work, and he can tell the difference. Everyone makes a lot more money now that they work for the Ubuyashiki family.
It's a blessing. That's why everyone does whatever Ubuyashiki asks them to.
Now they all know one of Ubuyashiki's priorities is to keep the slayers, especially the Pillars, very happy since they're the ones risking their lives every day for everyone.
That's why sometimes, he makes matches or tries to, between one of them and his Pillars, although so far his plan hasn't worked quite well. The hashira, except one, remain very much single to this day.
The Kamado family doesn't get surprised when Ubuyashiki's crow arrives; he explains they have been selected to try this new idea the leader of the Corps has in mind, if they want to.
Tanjirou immediately volunteers; he's eighteen now and is very grateful for everything the Pillars do for everyone (even though he hasn't met any of them yet) and he wouldn't mind getting married to one of them if the matchmaking works.
The crow explains that one of the Pillars will come to meet him, and if they like each other, they could get married in a couple of months.
"Are you sure about this?" Nezuko asks with a concerned expression on her face. Tanjirou smiles and pulls her into his arms.
He knows she cares a lot about his happiness.
"Listen, I'll be fine if they agree to marry me," he assures her. "However, I honestly don't think they will. I'm just a charcoal seller and I'm not that good look–"
"You're absolutely beautiful!" Nezuko cuts him off, rolling her eyes. "I can't believe you can't see that! A lot of people in our village have a crush on you!"
Tanjirou feels himself blush to the tip of his ears. Trying to calm himself down, despite thinking his sister is exaggerating, he pulls all his hair up into a ponytail.
Sometimes he plays with his own hair when he's flustered.
"I don't think that's the case," he mumbles, shaking his head. "Anyway, you shouldn't worry because they won't choose me."
"They will, if they're not an idiot! You're perfect!"
"Nezuko, please! Nobody is perfect!"
She only shakes her head in response. She seems to be a lot more worried about this than he is.
Their siblings are too young to understand, and their mother asked Tanjirou if he was sure about it once and then relaxed as soon as she heard her oldest son's response and saw the determination on his face.
A few days after agreeing, he gets a letter from the water hashira; the Pillar who was chosen to meet Tanjirou and eventually get married to him.
However, Tomioka Giyuu lets him know he's not interested in getting married anytime soon and that he'll only meet him to please Ubuyashiki.
Tanjirou is more than okay with his choice and tells him they could be friends instead, if he wants to.
He doesn't get a reply to that letter, because the water hashira arrives the very next day.
Tanjirou is in the village selling charcoal when he accidentally meets him.
He bumps into him on his way to the local restaurant; he's taller than him, black hair, mismatched haori and deep blue eyes that stare into Tanjirou's for a little bit longer than what's usual among people who don't know each other.
"Hi!" He beams at the stranger. Tanjirou's nose tells him he's a good and very strong person. "Can I help you with anything?"
The man with deep blue eyes blinks, but he keeps his gaze fixed on Tanjirou. He turns slightly pink as he nods.
"I'm looking for the Kamado family. You know where they live?"
"Of course!" Tanjirou chuckles, prompting the stranger to blush even more. "I'm Kamado Tanjirou!"
"Oh!" He blurts out, looking even more flustered somehow. "I'm Tomioka Giyuu, the water hashira."
The redhead can't help but chuckle again; even if Tomioka hadn't told him he wasn't interested in marriage before, Tanjirou knows he wouldn't want to marry him anyway because he honestly looks like a mess at the moment.
Perhaps that's why he reacted like that. He's relieved to have chosen not to marry Tanjirou.
There are a lot of pretty girls and boys in the village whose hair is not a mess and don't have charcoal stains on their faces or clothes.
Although, Tanjirou really hopes he still wants to be his friend.
"It's a pleasure, Tomioka-san!" He beams. "Just let me finish with this and I'll take you to my house so you can have a nice meal."
Tomioka nods and insists on carrying the basket himself. They talk for a while as they walk in the village. Well, Tanjirou does most of the talking, but the water hashira seems genuinely interested in everything the redhead tells him.
He's really nice.
When the basket is finally empty, they head back towards the mountain.
"Do you always go alone?" The Pillar asks suddenly, frowning with concern.
Tanjirou smiles.
"Yes, but don't worry, I always carry an axe with me!"
Finally, Tomioka smiles at that. It's a genuine smile that even makes his eyes glimmer.
"Something like that wouldn't work on a demon."
"I know," Tanjirou nods. "But ever since we all started working for the Corps, this has been a safe place. Ubuyashiki has made sure of it."
"Oyakata-sama is a great man," Tomioka says then. "And he's right quite often, especially on the choices he makes."
Tanjirou notices that his scent changes at those words, but he has no idea what it means.
After a while, Tanjirou introduces the water hashira to his family. Kie stares at him for a while before smiling at him. It seems she likes him. It's the same for Nezuko; she keeps an eye on him as he eats and sometimes talks with Tanjirou, and only after they finish eating, she nods to herself and smiles at Tomioka.
Tanjirou's siblings, the young ones, are too busy being in awe at Tomioka's katana and clothes to mistrust him.
What he likes about the water hashira is that he answers to each and every single one of their questions, even Rokuta's, like he takes them seriously. Not a lot of people do that when they're speaking to children.
It's actually Nezuko the one who stops them from asking more.
"Well... that's enough. Tomioka-san is here to spend time with our older brother."
The little kids pout, but let Nezuko take them to another room, except for Rokuta, who's very much asleep in Tanjirou's arms. He doesn't mind carrying him for a while.
"When are you going to tell Ubuyashiki about your decision?" Tanjirou asks then with a kind smile. "Although you'll always be welcome here. I'd like for us to be friends."
Looking slightly nervous, the water hashira starts rubbing the back of his neck as he blushes to the tip of his ears.
"I... I think I made a mistake," he admits. "I shouldn't have written that before meeting you. But... this has happened before and I have never... what I'm trying to say is that I'd like to try this time, if you're okay with it."
"You mean that you want to agree to the marriage?" Tanjirou mumbles, blushing. What could have made him change his mind? "I really hope it's because that's what you truly want and not–"
"I really want this," Tomioka cuts him off, surprising even himself. "I mean... I think we'd make a good couple and I–I really like you."
Tanjirou smiles at him.
"Alright. Let's try."
Even though they'll eventually marry, Tomioka insists on courting Tanjirou. And he keeps telling the redhead he can change his mind at any moment. They'll always be friends no matter what.
But Tanjirou has already made his choice; Tomioka is a good person and has sacrificed enough to keep innocent people safe. He's kind to his family and his mother seems to like him and has welcomed him into the family since she found out he doesn't have anyone left.
Tanjirou really wants to make him happy.
After a couple of weeks, when they're walking down the mountain, Tomioka gives Tanjirou a kiss on the lips that makes them both blush.
Their first kiss.
"What do you think about getting married in October?" The water hashira asks, intertwining their fingers together.
"I'd like that," Tanjirou mumbles, moving closer to him.
Only three months left.
Tomioka smiles back, eyes shining. Tanjirou has never seen him that happy before.
"I want to do this properly so we'll have to go to the hashira headquarters and tell the others in the next hashira meeting. Are you okay with that?"
"Of course, Giyuu-san!"
It seems he's getting married in three months, he can't wait. Tanjirou is sure they'll both make each other happy.
