Chapter Text
Neil took a long drag of the cigarette sitting between his pointer and middle finger, the flame had almost licked all the way up to the butt. Neil glances up as the door to his right makes a high-pitched squealing sound signaling someone shoving it open.
“You really shouldn’t smoke those on campus.” Rowlen his history teacher chimes in. Rowlen wasn’t a bad guy, in fact he seemed to have a soft spot for kids who looked like they needed a helping hand, although he just did it his own way. Not by butting his head into things Neil didn’t want him involved in, that was probably why Neil liked him so much, he was just a pillar to lean on instead of someone who thought they needed to fix him. Neil knew his mother would beat him to hell and back if she saw him now, signed up to a high school pretending nothing was wrong. Pretending he hadn’t had to burn his own mother’s cold dead body on a dark sandy beach in California not even three months ago. ‘Promise me you won’t look back Neil, you can afford to stop running. One day you will know the truth, the truth about me and your father. Promise me you wont look into it before you have to.’ “Yeah, well shouldn’t you tell me not to smoke them at all?”
Rowlen chuckled a bit to himself taking the butt of the cigarette form Neils frozen fingers and flicking it off into the dark parking lot Infront of them. “I suppose I should, but you wouldn’t listen anyway.” Neil tilts his head to the sky, the feeling of long dead, forgotten hands reaching for him making him shiver. “What did you come to me for Mr. Rowlen, we both know you didn’t want to just lecture me on smoking In the deserted parking lot.” Rowlen shuffled on his feet before leaning back on the brick wall looking away from Neil to stare at the sky as-well “Some recruiters came ‘round earlier looking for you.” Neil’s blood went cold. The only thing someone on the run wouldn’t want to hear someone is looking for you. He tried to calm his racing heart as his fingers itched to get another cigarette, the scent more then the nicotine calming Neil. It reminded him of his mother, not just from when he had watched her body burn his stomach emptying itself into the sand, but her being an avid smoker even on the run, it seemed to calm her she wasn’t as jumpy with a cigarette between her fingers.
“Oh yeah? And what were they trying to recruit me for, I’m not in any sports.” Rowlen must have noticed how stiff and closed off Neil was getting as he tried to remain relaxed as he explained. “They said they were some college recruiters, they saw your testing scores and had to have you.” Neil took in a deep breath putting a hand in his hair pulling slightly to steady himself, just some college recruiters nothing to worry about. His father’s men hadn’t found him, not yet at least. Neil rolled his shoulder sore from leaning against the wall for as long as he had. “You told them I’m not interested in college?” Rowlen rolled his eyes pushing off the wall and walking back to the door, turning to Neil. “Nah I thought you should tell them yourself, told them to come back tomorrow.” Neil scoffed pushing off from the wall as-well, perhaps Rowlen wasn’t as interested in staying out of Neil’s business as he had given him credit for. “You just took that upon yourself, huh” Rowlen sighed pulling open the door regarding Neil once more. “Listen Neil It’s not my business so I haven’t said anything, but don’t think I haven’t noticed how you wait till the last possible second to leave campus, or how I’ve conveniently never seen your parents. Hell, kid I just want you to have the option to leave this small town and your baggage behind with it.”
Neil’s hand closed into a fist as Rowlen slipped back inside, he didn’t understand why that was never a option for Neil, why he couldn’t even stay in this town long enough to graduate or why he could never leave his baggage behind, for Neil it was stuck to him with glue. Neil sighed letting his arm go limp as he looked up to the stars once more, wishing he was someone else, someone who could go to college like a normal person, someone who could at least graduate high school. Alas that was not an option, sure his father was in prison for now, but who knows how long until he was released and came for Neil, and Neil wouldn’t survive another rematch.
When Neil thought he had put it off long enough he grabbed the strap of his duffle bag slung around his shoulder and made his way to his, well Neil wouldn’t call it a home more like a place he liked to crash in not totally legally. It was a few roads down from the school covered in trees and bushes an abandoned house, Neil knew how it sounded but it really wasn’t that bad. He had lived in worse. The house itself was pretty much intact with minimal trash and drug equipment around making it perfect for Neil to use until he left this small town behind him. After his mom died Neil moved around aimlessly for around a month before finding this town, it was small and mostly had old people, making it perfect to hide from most people and even if someone did come Neil would have to count on small-town gossip. Although he hadn’t heard anything about college recruiters arriving so clearly this small town had failed him, Neil would have to leave sooner then he thought, He would meet the recruiters and send them away tomorrow then by next week he would hotwire a car and go to the next stop, Spain maybe. Neil was able to drift off holding onto his duffle at the thought.
-
To say Neil wasn’t impressed would be an understatement, it would be more accurate to say he was annoyed. He had decided to meet with the recruiters after lunch, but didn’t expect them to call him to the principal’s office in the middle of lunch because they were impatient. He started his slightly embarrassing trek to the office all eyes on him from the announcement people leaning into each other to whisper about the boy they hadn’t even noticed in their school before. His face was burning by the time he arrived at the office all but slamming the door open. The first thing he noticed was the big burly man with tribal tattoos down his arms, Neil hesitated his innate fear of men bigger than him causing him to stand in the door way. The second thing he noticed was the two guys who appeared to be around his age standing around the bigger man. One had an eye-catching tattoo of a number two on his face and was standing slightly off to the side holding himself with an air of confidence, although for some reason he was cradling his hand to his chest. The second guy had taken most of Neil’s attention as soon as he laid eyes on him, half because he was shorter than Neil which was a feat in itself as Neil was only a staggering five foot three inches. The other half was the way he carried himself he had this air of danger around him that Neil only recognized as it was the same danger in himself.
“You going to stand there and stare or come in.” The one with the tattoo on his face said impatience clearly written all over his face, and if only to annoy the man he leaned against the door frame instead. “So, this is some college recruitment?” The annoyed man glared at Neil but the bigger one with tribal tattoos stepped forward holding a hand out in Neil’s direction. “David Wymack, and you must be Neil ignore Kevin he’s not so good on manners.” Neil stared at his hand not sure if he waned to shake it, on one hand he didn’t want to seem like so much of a charity case that he couldn’t even shake someone’s hand but on the other hand he liked to be at least arm’s length from anyone old enough to be his father, it was easier to dodge blows that way when they inevitably came. Though Wymack seemed to have gotten the hint slowly lowering his arm, and clearing his throat.
“Ahem, well uh it’s true we are college recruiters but, this conversation would be better in private,” Neil looked at him skeptically not moving from where he was leaning against the door frame. “I don’t know coach; he looks to jumpy; I don’t think he trust’s us enough to close the door.” The blonde one chimed in, his hand was messing with the edge of the armbands he had on that went from wrist till it disappeared under his shirt. Neil narrowed his eyes at the gesture, the man seemed to notice smiling at Neil almost mockingly holding his hands up in a placating gesture. “Shut it Andrew, you aren’t helping.” Wymack muttered taking a step back from Neil and waiting patiently for Neil to be ready. After a minute of tense silence between the four, Neil sighed giving in and closing the door behind him stepping fully into the room. “So, what did you need to talk about alone.” Wymack took a deep breath, running his hand through his black slat and pepper hair. “Listen kid, what I’m about to tell you I don’t want you to freak out about okay?” Neil’s eyes suddenly darted to the window at the end of the office directly behind them, if he really ran, he thinks he could make to out without them getting him first. “This is always the worst part.” Wymack mutters seemingly to himself. “Have you ever, you know felt different from everyone else-?” That gave Neil pause it was almost funny how random that sentence seemed.
“What is this an intervention or something? What do you mean different?” Wymack sighs rubbing a hand on his face as Kevin seems to get impatient. “Our college is for the supernatural, we have a way of identifying them and you Neil Josten are confirmed to be of supernatural decent.” Neil blinked once then Twice then let out a startled laugh, the kind that escapes from you throat without you noticing, he then takes a step back reaching for the door. “You guys are some crazy fuckers; I don’t care if you believe in that shit or whatever but leave me out it.” Andrew took a step forward hand outreached but Wymack put a hand out Infront of him stopping him from getting any closer to Neil. “Neil listen, just hear us out-” Wymack started before Neil interrupted him “No, I don’t want to join your cult or whatever this is.” Kevin scoffed shaking his head. “Listen I know it hard for your small mind to comprehend but it’s true and we can’t just leave an untrained, ignorant supernatural like you wandering the streets.” Neil balled up his hands making fists. “Fuck you.” He spit glaring at Kevin with all the malice he could without rushing over to punch him. “Calm down kid- just answer me this one question and you can go, okay?” Neil frowned at the use of the word kid but slowly nodded if only because Andrew looked ready to drag him back to the room kicking and screaming if he left. “Have you ever encountered something strange? Something that couldn’t be explained?” Neil didn’t know why but his mind flashed to that faithful day the day he last saw his mother before he had to watch the life slip from her eyes.
Alex had been awoken by his mother screaming at him from the front seat of the car they had just hot wired “your so selfish! If you don’t want to be dragged back to Baltimore wake up and help me navigate this road, Alex.” His mother yelled reaching her hand back to yank once on his hair to make sure he was awake before focusing back on the road. Alex rubbed his scalp his whole-body sore from having to jump out of a moving car last night when one of his fathers’ men had found them in some cheap motel, He moved around till he was upfront. Reaching for the compartment Infront of the passenger’s seat he pulls out the map of the US they have taken with them to get around. “Where are we now mom.” She didn’t spare him a glance instead suddenly hitting a left the whole car almost tipping from the sudden turn, Alex yelped, grabbing onto the seat as to not fly out. “Fuck” Mary cursed under her breath her normally reclass driving getting even worse. Alex trembled slightly glancing at his normally composed mother even when they are running from his father’s men, she would yell sure, but never cursed or almost killing them with her driving. Alex dared a look back and to his surprise, it wasn’t men no not at all but three large wolves running up the road after them. Alex couldn’t believe his eyes I mean wolves didn’t get that big and they Definity didn’t chase after random cars like they were hunting them. Alex glanced at Mary then glace back out the window, but just like that they were gone.
Although they didn’t appear for the rest of the night when his mother was slaughtered by his father’s men, he still couldn’t explain wat he saw or Mary’s haunted look that she didn’t even get when his father was mentioned. Neil knew he could just lie to these strangers and they would never know better, but what if they were really telling the truth? What if there was more to his and his mother’s story then he knew. Was trusting these men really worth finding out? Neil snapped out of it as Kevin snapped his fingers Infront of hid face turning to Wymack “He’s not going to listen to us I told you we should have just-“
“Should have just what.” Neil chimed in venom dripping from the words. Kevin floundered, before Wymack sighed shoving Kevin away from Neil. Neil sighed then counted to ten in German and English before opening his mouth again. “Say I have seen something, maybe a little supernatural feeling. Not saying that I have but IF I had, what does that even matter.” Andrew stepped forward causing Neil to take a step back, Wymack let out what sounded like a waring to Andrew but Andrew ignored him. “It matters because it would make what we are about to show you way easier for you mind to comprehend.” Andrew stated his eyes shifting from a hazel brown to a deep rich red, Neil made a small sound he couldn’t identify maybe one of distress, but couldn’t look away, the eyes seeming so mesmerizing in that moment. He felt like he was someone else, his feelings mixing and twisting till eh just felt one thing, he wanted to please Andrew do whatever he wished. Andrew opened his mouth but just as quick as it had been there it was gone, with Wymack grabbing Andrew’s arm and pulling him away causing him to break eye contact. “Andrew!! What the hell do you think you are doing!? We are trying to recruit him not make him join by force!” Neil shook his head his hands coming up to cradle the raging headache that suddenly sprouted when Andrew looked away “What the hell was that.” He managed to get out through gritted teeth.
“The proof you were looking for.” Kevin so helpfully chimed in. Yeah, it was pretty clear to Neil at this point they were telling the truth, nothing about that was human. ‘Fuck off captain obvious I mean what the fuck was it!” Neil staggered slightly the headache so bad that he could barley stand, Wymack took a step forward as if to catch him. “A vampire’s thrall” Andrew said now across the room staring out the window looking slightly more haunted than he had been before. Neil groaned clutching his head Wymack cursed taking a step closer to Neil buy when he flinched away, he chose a different tactic, Wymack crouched down. “Kid focus on my voice, okay?” Neil shook his head but it was like he was speaking directly into his head; Slowly Neil almost didn’t notice the pain ebbed away before it was none existent altogether. “What the fuck.” Neil glanced between them his heart beating out of his chest they had just taken control of his mind giving him a head splitting headache then took it away just as fast.
“You have to listen closely Neil, Now that you have seen our power first hand you know we are telling the truth, we have somewhere safe, safe for people like us-“ Neil scoffed interrupting him backing away till his back made contact with the door. “Us? I’m nothing like you people.” Wymack shook his head but could see anything he would say at this point would serve to only make Neil inch further away. “Fine, this is enough for today.” Kevin went to disagree throwing his hands up in the air when Wymack shushed him. Wymack put a hand in his pocket pulling out a wallet, then pulling out a slip of paper. “Here call this number or come to the schools address if you change your min.” Wymack tired to smile but he just looked tired, worn out for the day. Neil moved out of the way of the door as they walked through, Andrew shoulder checking him on the way out. Neil glanced at the card he begrudgingly took from Wymack, sure he wasn’t going to use it he crumpled it then shoved it into his back pocket.
-
It was after the last bell had rung that Rowlen had approached Neil, he had known it was coming. “So, did they somehow manage to change our mind about going to a college?” Neil frowned, his earlier annoyance from the whole interaction reigniting, it felt like a fire under his skin. Fuck those guys for showing him something he would have rather lived his whole life without knowing, fuck them for just leaving after dropping a bomb big enough to spin Neil’s whole world on its axis. “Not really.” Neil responded curtly, Rowlen just nodded so Neil assumed the conversation was over, grabbing his bag until Rowlen spoke once again. “Hey Neil, you uh well you have a home right-“ Neil froze had someone noticed? Clearly Neil took to long to respond scrambling for a reply because Rowlen tensed up looking suddenly way to old for his age, Neil could see how so many kids like him alone in the world had come to trust him. “Look, not for nothing but I have a spare bedroom across from my son’s.” Neil shook his head tense and ready to run. “No thanks, I mean I do have a home.” Rowlen just stared at him with that calm wise look that made Neil want to hide in his hood away from those knowing eyes. The fact was, Neil was tired. So tired, it was like he had never stopped moving since his mother had passed. After the conversation with Wymack and his feral looking kids Neil really just wanted to sleep on a bed, and the only one he trusted in this stupid town was holding out for him on a silver platter.
That’s how two hours later he ended up eating dinner with Rowlens family. “It’s nice to have someone my son’s age come visit.” His wife Vicky smiled at him although she seemed more then a little confused when Rowlen had hauled a barley of age boy through his front door, not explaining why Neil had to stay. It didn’t look to be to strange occurrence to the family although as they quickly warmed up to Neil, who in reality had barley contributed to the ongoing conversation. Rowlens son Mick had also seemed excited to see Neil walk through the door, in-fact he hadn’t taken his eyes off Neil the whole time he had been there. “Uh yeah.” Neil vaguely replied shoving his face with the food Vicky had made when she saw them walk through the door. Seeing how Neil was eating like he never had a proper meal before Vicky sent Rowlen a look, that he proceeded to wave off giving her a stern look. As the meal ended without them trying to make anymore small talk with Neil, Rowlen had showed Neil to his bed stopping in the doorframe Turing to Neil opening his mouth as if to say something before closing it again and just setting a hand on Neil’s head ruffling his hair. It felt so affectionate Neil didn’t know how to feel it felt like the fire that had been building since the meeting had been doused in water. “Goodnight, buddy.” Rowlen said as he gently closed the door Neil slumped into the bed, he really couldn’t sort his feelings it was a whirl wind, one he was almost lost in.
It seemed like hours later when the door opened, Neil had always been a light sleep so even just the light moving as the door opening had Neil sitting up reaching for a weapon that wasn’t under his pillow, he had left all his weapons in his duffle bag which was currently under the bed. If he was quick, he could grab one and fight his was out but the door just opened revealing Mike, Neil took a deep breath calming himself not wanting to freak out Rowlens son. “Oh hey, you need something?” Neil says rubbing the sleep from his eyes he sits up. Mike moved in the bedroom sitting at the edge of his bed, Neil couldn’t describe the look on Mikes face besides blank. Neil reacted without thinking rushing to move off the bed, Mike grabbed his arm shoving him back on the bed. Mike was built probably went to the gym with the height of around six foot, he easily dwarfed Neil. Neil’s eyes widened as his fight or flight or fight kicked in, he struggled with Mike kicking and biting but Mike took it in stride, his eyes an almost black color it was like he couldn’t even feel the pain. Mike made no sound nor talked his face that same blank. “Mike what the fuck.” Neil practically yelled hoping someone else in the house might hear but no such luck. Mike simply put his hands over Neil’s mouth. Then his hands started to wander, up Neil’s shirt down to the waist band of his shorts. Neil tried to bite his hand but he didn’t even reach. Neil shook his head his eyes feeling wet, he was crying he realized. He hadn’t stopped fighting the whole time it was happening but suddenly his pants were shoved down to his ankles and Neil couldn’t see anything. It felt like flame like revenge like safety. Neil was engulfed in flames.
Neil came to moments later; all he could see was ash. He shakily stood a hand over his mouth as he looked around, the house that he had just been in, the one where Vicky had treated him kindly, the one where Rowlen had taken him in off the streets was burned down to nothing but ash and wood. Neil took in gasped breathing his eyes sight waning as he fought off a panic attack he took a step forward, his foot hitting something. He glanced down to see the smokey charred remains of Mike. He shook his head “No. No. NO! this isn’t happening” Neil moved away from the body his ears picking up a sound. Moaning was coming from behind Neil, he turned so fast he almost fell to see the sound there laying on the ground with multiple third-degree burn was Rowlen. “NO ROWLEN.” Neil rushed forward so fast he fell to his knees Infront of the body, so unrecognizable. Had Neil done this? No, he couldn’t have. “Rowlen, Rowlen.” Neil repeated cradling his scarred head between his arms. Rolands gaze was in an out glancing around almost frantic. “Neil, are you there? I can’t see anything.” The sound of his voice barely even human made Neil shake, his body trembled as tears streamed down his face landing atop Rowlen’s “Neil are you crying? Cough Don’t worry about me if you can still move then get to safety.” Rowlen trailed off is breathing ragged “Hey try and get Vicky and Mike help, okay?” Then he was gone. Neil had seen enough dead people to know when the life left the body, but he couldn’t bring himself to move crying, sobbing into the smokey air. “NO, Rowlen stay with me please just stay.”
Neil sobbed until he heard sirens, he staggered to stand wincing as he felt every burn on his body, but they felt numb like her wasn’t himself, wasn’t in his body. This hadn’t happened no way this had happened. Neil moved into the word walk far away from the house numb. All he knew was he couldn’t stop moving his mother was right, he got to comfortable and now someone else was burned. This was the moment Neil knew he lost something that he would never get back, Wymack was right he was a monster just like them.

Chapter Text
The branches and thorns cut open Neil’s already searing flesh as he runs through the forest as fast as his feet will carry him, until he doesn’t hear the sirens anymore. His mind racing as the memories hit him all at once, he didn’t know how it happened but while he was in trouble his supposed ‘powers’ had reared their ugly head. He wishes they didn’t. This would mean that Wymack, Andrew, and Kevin were telling the truth. He wasn’t human he was like them; he wishes he had just followed them then and there no more questions asked instead- Neil’s trail of thoughts gets cut off as he doubles over onto his hand and knees, scrapping the wooded ground, his stomach emptying itself not for the first time that night. “Rowlen..” Neil whispers the name; it forces its way out of his throat leaving everything in its wake bleeding. He shakily stands once more daring a look back, he was far from where he started now far into the forest, he wasn’t in control of his body when he started walking back. It was a split-second decision, He had to go back, to turn himself in it was what he deserved. He didn’t mean to but in one decision he had changed his whole life, killing three mostly innocent people in the process.
Neil runs back not sure what he will say to police, but he knows he can’t leave it like this. Not for Rowlen, he deserves better. Maybe he could get a plea deal and make sure he didn’t end up with his father, although he was sure his father would know people and get him killed either way. It was what he deserved wasn’t it? Neil slowed as he got to the tree line, not because he was second guessing turning himself in but because of what he saw. Instead of police and fire trucks posted all along the house there were two black cars. Neil watched, his breath coming out in quick pants as four men emerged from the cars two were dressed in classic black suit attire, sunglasses over their eyes they headed straight for the what was left of the house. The other two men on the other hand were dressed just as formal but more relaxed they stood along the line on the housing but not doing anything as the other two did. Instead, one of them opened their mouth to speak. “Not just any supernatural could cause this, a whole house up in smoke just like that. Must be a wild untamed one. Strong, At least A rank.” The other man nodded neither seeming to take notice that Neil was standing just outside their eyeline but in listening distance. “Yes, they are lucky the Moriyama’s sent us instead of one of the higher ups, or this mutant would have been gutted by now. Although Ichirou will be pleased to take notice of a new strong supernatural.”
Neil tuned out the rest of the men’s conversation, the Moriyama’s? What did they have to do with anything, Neil had heard that name before sure, they were huge in the business world, his dad had business with them on more then one occasion but Neil had never personally seen any of them. Not to mention why were they here instead of actual police, Neil didn’t have much time to think this over as one of the men turned around sharply. “You think Ichirou will let us hunt this one? I mean he caused this much damage they have to clean up.” The other one shook his head. “Nah, ever since they lost their toughest supernatural-“ Neil couldn’t hear the rest his gaze pulled to the other two men as with one wave of their hand Neil’s eyes widened. The house reversed the wood falling back into place grass re growing the explosion of fire, bottled back up into the house, until it looked like nothing had happened. Neil held a hand over his mouth to keep from making any noise, with everything that had happened tonight he felt like he was falling apart at the seams. They were turning back time. “What about the people in the house?” one of the men asks. “Just erase their memory and throw them back in. Ichirou doesn’t care to question the mortals this time.” The worker nods stepping back, muttering something under his breath then stepping back again. “It’s done.”
Neil took back off running, this time he didn’t stop, didn’t let himself think about what he just saw.
-
It was sunrise by the time Neil was back in his body, his mind slowly resetting. He had ended up on some road he didn’t recognize, seeing a gas station a little ahead, he trudged inside. There was a man inside, looked mid to late twenties sitting on his phone behind the counter. “Can I use your phone please.” Neil asked although it didn’t sound much like a question even to his own ears his feelings had been stretched out and sliced up over the course of the night and he didn’t have time to try to try to force any emotion on his face. “Holy shit man your face it’s all…” The man trialed off, Neil had been feeling pain in his face through the night, but hadn’t had any time to really analyze why. Now seeing the look on the guys face Neil could only guess what he looked like. “You need like a ambulance or something I-“ the man looked around frantically typing on his phone. “No. I’m fine I just need to make a call.” The man blinked at Neil looking surprised, but slowly holds out the phone not taking his eyes off Neil as if he had come back from the dead right before his eyes. Neil didn’t know who he was going to call, one of his mother’s associates’ maybe, someone who could take care of his face and keep him in hiding for a while. Just then he felt his pocket. He was still wearing his pants from the night before and in the pocket was a crumpled card. Neil knew he didn’t really have any other choice.
-
“Hello?” A gruff mans voice answered clearly awoken from his sleep.
“Hey it’s Neil, that guy you tired to recruit yesterday. You still in town? I changed my mind.” Neil knew his voice sounded scratchy and no longer like his own and Wymack seemed to sense something was wrong to.
“Yeah, we are still here, are you alright? You need us to come get you?” Neil glances at the panic-stricken worker who looked between him and the phone.
“I’m fine.” The worker shook his head in disbelief grabbing the phone before Neil could react.
“Hey, your kid is barely on his feet and looks like Freddy cruger. Please come get him before he dies in this gas station.” Neil sighed wanting to get annoyed but he didn’t feel much of anything, he did snatch the phone back though.
“It’s not either of your business and I’m fine, I’m not going to die, not right this second at least.” But Neil already heard Wymack hollering for someone and getting ready in the background.
“Just stay there you damn brat.” Then he hung up not even asking where Neil, although Neil guessed they didn’t really need to ask when they were supernatural’s. He didn’t really know the rules yet.
-
Neil waited on the curb, his legs tucked into his chest his head resting on his knees, it sent immeasurable pain across his whole body, but it felt good, like in a way this was his karma. Around thirty minutes later a junky rusted SUV stopped Infront of Neil, he didn’t bother looking up. “What’s wrong with the rabbit? Life chew you up spit you out?” Neil heard a scoff from Andrew as Wymack walked forward shushing him. “You don’t know what he’s been through yet.” Kevin scoffs this time loudly opening the car door. “I bet he realized we were right and came running back after calling us freaks.” Wymack sighed “He didn’t call us freaks and besides he right here. Hey, Neil buddy can you lift you head for me?” Neil didn’t want to, he wished they were right so bad, Neil wondered what he looked like, how bad the scars were. He knew he would have to face it eventually though so he slowly lifted his head. He heard a loud gasp from Kevin then saw Andrew turn right around back into the car yanking Kevin with him, Neil assumed that was Andrew’s way of granting him some privacy for now. “How bad is it. I look like Freddy cruger?” Neil had never seen the movie but knew it wasn’t positive. “Wymack flinched back then cooled his expression like water crouching down Infront of Neil. “Nah, your still ugly as before just with some new stories.” Wymack tried to seem calm but he looked like he was shaking slightly his hand balled into fists just as Andrew’s had been.
“Tell me what happened Neil.” Neil shook his head moving back into himself, Wymack must have decided he needed treatment more then the truth as he took a deep breath then held out a hand. “Come on, with the magic at palmetto you will be good as new. For now, I will seal the injuries so they can’t get worse or bleed out. “ Neil winced and raised his hand to grab Wymack’s.

Chapter Text
Andrew wasn’t born immortal, it just happened sometime in his fucked up life. He was born crying and shitting himself just like everyone else. It was the rest of his life that took an unfortunate turn, in that he was born at all. Sometimes as a kid Andrew would cry and cry wondering what he did to deserve this, of course he grew out of it fairly quickly after all now he knew, the thing was he had not done anything at all, and yet it happened anyway. That was life.
-
Andrew had grown up, having gone from one shit hole foster home to the next he was already a cynical child. The head of the orphanage had labeled him a difficult child, urging the Adults to choose someone more tame to take into their household. Andrew didn’t mind, he hated foster homes, they were always hitting him or keep food from him as punishments for stupid stuff. Not to mention what the men would do at night, Sometimes at night after he was returned he could still feel those hands on him, pulling and whispering, he would plead with them all night, only for day to come and they would still be there. Andrew wondered if they would ever let him go.
-
He had just turned seventeen his first week at Cass spear’s house. She cooked for him chatting away with a smile, making Andrew lower his guard, maybe this time was finally different. Then Drake came. Her son who was supposed to be deployed had come home early. Drake was the kind of guy all mom’s wished was their son, he was tall, strong, and a happy person making others smile when with him. He was Andrew’s nightmare, he had finally felt like he was safe when he started to feel Drake’s eyes on him, he knew what was coming. The thing was the way Drake looked wasn’t normal, but it wasn’t like those other men had look at him with either. They had looked with lust or maybe a bit of shame, Drake looked at him like he was a new plaything or how someone looked at an interesting object.
Andrew wasn’t surprised when a few days after the staring started Drake started entering his room at night. That was something Andrew understood, and in a weird way he reveled in it, this home had always felt to good for Andrew, Cass had always felt to good for Andrew. In his own way this felt right, like it was a balance. Although nothing could beat the feeling of peace after slicing into his wrists but that was a story for another time.
Drake would take advantage of his body each night for a little over three months before the incident occurred.
It was like every other night except something felt..off. Drake was touching him as usual, but there was something wrong. His eye shone a dark ruby red as he stared at Andrew. Andrew acted without thought, fighting harder than he ever had, not that he hadn’t tried to fight him off before, but it was a fight or flight reaction. Andrew instinctively knew if he stayed he was going to die. Drake held him down with what seemed like super natural strength his lips stretching into a huge smile, long sharp teeth sticking out. Andrew screamed, but no one came, not even Cass. “You know, I would have loved to keep you but, mom says I shouldn’t play with my food” He smiled huge his eyes seeming to shine in the moon light, and Andrew knew he was going to die.
-
Andrew suddenly woke, his eyes flying open sitting up before he could even string together a thought. He was outside now, lying in a field as naked as the day he was born, no memories of what happened after he blacked out, but he knew one thing. He was hungry.
Why had Drake left him alive? why had Drake turned him into..this. Maybe he felt this a far more cruel fate then ending Andrew’s life that night.
-
Andrew stares at Kevin in the rear view mirror as he petulantly kicks the drivers seat for what seems like the hundredth time, if he was still human he would have a headache by now. Kevin had started pouting the moment Andrew ripped him away from Neil. Andrew was sure Kevin wanted to study the scars, see if they were from a super natural, everything super natural fascinated Kevin. Much to Andrew’s dismay, as he on the other had despised anything super natural.
Andrew knew scars and the ones on Neil’s face didn’t seem to be from another super. Andrew glanced outside the window of the car to get another look at Neil. He had a huge burn mark starting under his right eye down to his neck disappearing under his shirt, with a few more minor scars along his arms. They didn’t seem life threatening, on the other hand they didn’t look fresh at all. If Andrew hadn’t seen the boy a day earlier he wouldn’t have believed they happened over night. It seemed as if the burns had tried healing themselves but left scars behind.
Perhaps a healing power then, although if he did have one why did it leave behind marks. Andrews closes his eyes tired of looking at the battered boy, his brown eyes and dark hair lingering in Andrew’s mind.
Since becoming immortal Andrew hadn’t felt any pull to any humanly emotions like, longing. In fact Andrew didn’t let himself feel much at all, not anymore. Although something about this Neil guy made Andrew want to reach out, to touch another. “You think the Ravens got to him first?” Kevin asks sitting forward to look at Andrew in the passenger. “If they have then this is a trap, no one leaves once the Moriyama’s get their hands on them.” Andrew sighs when Kevin tenses cradling his hand to his chest. “Except you, stop pouting you stupid mutt.”
Kevin sputtered, giving Andrew a glare which he ignored. “I know the whole mission of the school is to help super naturals, but do we really have to bring him in? Seems to be a danger and not just to others.” Andrew shrugs his hand automatically moving to his arm bands, suddenly wanting to stab something. “If he does I will get ride of him the same way I got ride of the others.” That makes Kevin lean back.
After a few minutes of Wymack talking to Neil like a hunter would a baby deer, Neil hobbles with Wymacks help to the car getting into the back seat. Kevin turns to glare at the side of Neil’s face as Neil gazes out the window not speaking to any of them.
-
Wymack had kicked Kevin and Andrew out of their own hotel room for the past hour, nursing Neil back to health claiming Neil would only be uncomfortable with them there. Wymack was always a bleeding heart but normally it didn’t affect Andrew this much. It was annoying. The burns weren’t even life threatening plus the kid didn’t seem to be in that much pain, he complained enough to seem fine.
The second Andrew and Kevin had went back to the room, Andrew deciding he was done being kicked out after finishing a pack of cigarettes, Andrew noticed the stupid burned runner on his bed. His. Andrew wasn’t one to show much emotion but he could feel his eyebrow twitch as he walked up to Neil staring him down. “Can I help you?” The petulant burnet replied to Andrew’s gaze. “Yes. Get off my bed.”
Neil blinked once then stood up, looking to the other bed that was occupied by Kevin. “Well where am I supposed to sleep.” Andrew laid out on his bed pulling out his phone. “Im sure you will find somewhere, there’s always the floor.” Andrew had to stop himself from rolling his eyes at the boys dejected expression, as he trudged over to the arm chair on the other side of the room. Andrew almost felt bad, for one thing he couldn’t even sleep anymore. He just closed his eyes and let his thought consume him.
“You guys are jerks.” Neil muttered throwing himself of the chair wincing. That made Andrew feel less bad. Andrew kept playing on his phone making sure to keep an eye on the boy in his peripheral, he had crashed hard after laying down on the chair. Kevin following soon after leaving Andrew to stare at the ceiling thinking, he knew Wymack would still be awake also being a vampire, but he didn’t want to talk to the old man right now.
His gaze flicked over to Neil as he moved suddenly sitting up panting loudly. Neil flinched back as he saw Andrew’s gaze on him before slowly calming himself down, pushing off the chair he opened the patio door slipping out into the night. Andrew took a breath then two before following after, making sure to leave a large gap between them as he leaned against the railing. Neil didn’t say anything instead closing his eyes and breathing in the night. After a few seconds Andrew pulled out his second pack of the day lighting a cigarette.
“Can I get one?” Neil said his voice wavering slightly. Andrew eyed the burns on his face then shrugged pulling one out and handing it to him. Neil nodded his thanks then let Andrew light it for him. After a few more minutes of silence Neil broke it. “So, the super natural is real huh?” Andrew tilted his head blowing out a large cloud of smoke. “You’re rather slow aren’t you.” That made Neil chuckle a bit his hand moving up to cover his mouth. Andrew suddenly felt a roll of something in his stomach, maybe the elk he had drank last night didn’t agree with his stomach. “I guess I am. So you and Wymack are uh vampires, what’s Kevin?” Andrew took another drag of his cigarette debating continuing this conversation with someone he didn’t yet trust.
When Neil didn’t get an answer he just sighed stubbing out his cigarette he hadn’t taken a single drag from. “You don’t like talking.” It wasn’t a question so Andrew didn’t answer instead lighting another cigarette offering it to Neil who shook his head. A few more minutes passed before Andrew spoke again. “I’ll make you a deal. A truth for a truth. Neil tilted his head like a confused dog ugh. Andrew did roll his eyes this time looking away at the streets below.
“Wait like you get one question then I do?” Andrew nods. “Okay, but there are some things I won’t answer.” Andrew looked at Neil thoughtfully as shadows passed over the brunettes face. “Can’t or won’t?” Neil shrugged leaning in to smell the smoke coming from Andrew’s cigarette. “You go first.” Neil nodded thoughtfully. “Okay…so what happened when we first met.” Andrew froze crushing the cigarette between his fingers the burn instantly healing itself. “You’re going to have to be more specific then that.” Neil frowned. “I mean when you were in my mind, then looked like-“ Neil cut himself off waving a hand helplessly.
Andrew debated in his head for a few minutes before deciding he would let Neil have this one piece of information. “You don’t have to answer I just-“ it seems Andrew took to long as Neil was already over thinking waving his hands as he turned to go back inside. “I’m what they call a youngling, which means I am a recent vampire, I haven’t had years to perfect my powers. So I lost control.” Neil paused looking at Andrew then nodded. “What happened to your face.” Andrew wasn’t one to pull his punches and this guy was a runner wrapped in mystery and if Andrew was going to allow him to stay around he needed truths.
Neil’s hand flew up to his face his eyes widening before he shook his head seeming to choke on air. Andrew moved off the railing looking at Neil confused as his breathing picked up, then his hands flew to his hair. “Neil.” Neil didn’t seem to be listening as he tugged on his hair over and over muttering under his breath. Andrew frowned taking a step closer, normally he would just go into someone’s mind and make them calm down but he felt like it was a invasion at this moment, a line he wasn’t going to cross. Instead he slowly, slow enough that Neil could move away, put his hands on the back of Neil’s neck.
“Breathe.” He spoke the one word and it was like Neil had just found out he was able to, almost collapsing against the railing as he forced air into his lungs. “Not that. Don’t ask that.” Neil managed to force out Andrew blinked moving his hands away from Neil before nodding. “Okay.” It took Neil a few minutes of deep breathing before he stood on his own again his breathing going back to normal. “What are you running from.” Andrew asked instead when Neil was steady.
Neil took a sharp breath. “Someone dangerous.” Andrew’s eyes narrowed as he looked towards Neil. “Are you bringing this danger to Palmetto with you?” Neil closed his eyes. “I hope not.” he breathed out. Andrew decided that was enough sharing for one night going back inside and laying back down, his thoughts were buzzing even louder after the talk, but it would wait till they were back in Palmetto with his family back in his sight.
