Chapter Text

Lucy Heartfilia knew she was different.

She had always known.

Back in Crocus, her hometown, the coven made sure of it. They watched her every move, whispered behind her back, and caged her so she could never prosper.

Her mother, the current supreme, recognized her magic to be too strong to control, too unpredictable to trust, so she hid her for her safety. “A witch with no control is the easiest target to ruin the natural order.” Layla would always say.

That is why when she turned 18, Lucy chose a university far away. Her mother agreed as long as she concealed her power.

It sounded easy enough especially since her mother used a spell to seal her true strength.

While leaving Crocus should have felt like freedom, Lucy quickly realized it was more like being in exile.

Though most of her strength was sealed, she still lacked magic control. Until she could control it, she was scared to make friends, scared to show who she truly was.

So promised herself she would keep her distance.

If she stayed invisible, no one would get hurt.

Her first semester, she kept her head down, only going to class and back to her dorm.

She longed for a normal life. She envied the girls in her dorm that had formed incredible bonds.

She watched as they laughed together in the common room, ate together during dinner and whispered secrets only they knew.

There were so many times she wanted to talk to the girls, but she stopped.

Then she met Jellal.

The moment Lucy crossed paths with him, she felt his magic.

Her gift allowed her to channel the whispers of witches and warlocks from ages past, and those voices confirmed what her instincts already screamed: Jellal Fernandes was a warlock.

That realization, instead of frightening her, settled something deep inside.

For once, she felt like she wasn’t completely alone.

Jellal was intelligent and kind.

When they met he asked her how long she had been in Magnolia. She was honest and he said “Give it time, I’m sure you’ll be surprised by this school.”

He spoke about philosophy and survival, about living unseen in plain sight.

While Lucy wanted to develop a friendship, there was one problem.

Erza Scarlet

Erza Scarlet was one of her dormmates. She had welcomed Lucy at first, almost like an older sister.

But the closer Lucy grew to Jellal, the colder Erza became.

Her stares sharpened to feel like blades, her presence suffocating.

Lucy couldn’t understand until she visited Jellal unannounced one afternoon and interrupted a very intimate moment between him and Erza.

After it all made sense.

The next time she saw Erza, she explained there was nothing between her and Jellal beyond research and guidance, Erza went red.

“I- Im so embarrassed. I'm sorry Lucy, I can get protective when it comes to Jellal.” she admitted,

“It’s okay, I totally get it. I’m glad we cleared that up.”  Lucy let it go, though unease lingered.

Later that day, Lucy was heading back from the library when a guy approached her.

“You just might be the most beautiful woman I have ever laid my eyes on. The name’s Leo. I think you’ll make a delicious snack.”

His eyes raked over her like she was nothing but prey.

Suddenly she felt a small fear, maybe even a little disgust. Her body began to tense up, she looked around but she was alone.

Her hands moved in instinct, ready to protect herself.

But, before she could slap him, someone else stepped in.

A tall man with crimson hair bridged the space between them radiating serial killer energy.

The man who introduced himself as Leo went pale, his eyes going blank as he began to  stammer out two words “Im Sorry, I-I have to go.” before fleeing almost as if under a spell.

Lucy blinked, startled, and he smirked, “Sorry if that was weird, I hate guys like that. I'm Ignia, it's a pleasure to meet you.”

“My name’s Lucy! I should be the one thanking you. He was weird.” Lucy explained with a nervous laugh.

“If it helps, I could walk you to your next class, you know, to make sure you get there safely.” Ignia asked with a mildly flirty tone.

“I think I would enjoy that Ignia.” Lucy replied as a faint pink appeared on her cheeks.

From there, he walked with her, people watching and filling her in on the characters around the university.

Lucy shared her stories of the people she had met so far and her misunderstanding with Ezra.

She learned from him that Erza came from a long line of law enforcers, with ancestors rumored to have been samurai.

Cana was always drunk, but somehow predicted game scores, test answers and worse, which couples would break up.

Levy may be quiet and brilliant but she wasn't weak. “Once, when someone tried to hurt her friend Lisanna, Levy nearly shattered the girl’s arm. All I remember was she said she lost herself,” Ignia recalled, and no one’s pushed her since.”

Finally, he explained Juvia was practically royalty. She and her cousin Gajeel were a part of Magnolia’s founding families, their bloodlines woven into the town’s history.

Juvia carried herself like a princess, kind and welcoming, while Gajeel was her opposite—harsh, judgmental, and down right scary. “Its hard to believe they’re related sometimes,” Ignia joked.

The pair continued their walk when Lucy watched as Ignia tensed at the sight of a raven haired guy across the campus.

The tension between them was undeniable, leading to Lucy curiously asking, “What’s going on with you and that guy there. He's giving us some pretty serious daggers.”

Ignia’s jaw tightened. “That's Gray. The idiot best friend of my baby brother Natsu.”

“If he's close to your family, why the death stare?” Lucy questioned. She was always observant.

“Because, before Gray, Natsu was better. Once they got closer, he got roped in the wrong crowd. Gray is an arrogant prick who thinks he's untouchable because his family owns the Medical center in town. Natsu started to lash out against the family and the more he saw Gray, the less we recognized him.”

“How can one person make that much of an impact?”

“I wish I could answer that. We still don't know, nothing about it makes sense. Please, for your own good, stay away from him and my brother.”

Lucy listened carefully, weighing his words. She gave a small nod of understanding.

Life here was nothing like back home. In Crocus, danger came from covens and politics.

Here, it was tangled in secrets and unspoken grudges.

“I'm sure he'll come around. Thank you again for showing me around. Since I moved here, I've been a bit of a loner. Back home, my mom worked hard to protect me. Being the mayor, my family often faced political scrutiny so it meant I couldn't have many friends. I supposed I reverted to being alone from comfort. But this, our talk made me feel normal.”

Ignia’s expression softened. He handed her his phone number with a grin that was both teasing and sincere. “Just hearing those words makes me smile. Please, call me whenever. You don't have to be alone here, Lucy.”

And for the first time since she left Crocus, Lucy didn’t feel alone.

That night, Lucy went to sleep feeling a bit of hope.

As she drifted into a deeper slumber, she began to dream.

The dream started normally with her having a conversation with Juvia. The conversation was a great one full of laughter. But in an instant, Juvia’s eyes shifted, glowing with unnatural colors, and Lucy watched in horror as her bones began to snap and bend unnaturally.

The sound of it tore Lucy from her sleep, heart hammering, sweat dampening her hair.

Her intuition screamed that it was more than a nightmare.

Something was wrong.

When she awoke, she knew what she had to do.

She needed to uncover the meaning behind it.

The next day, Lucy approached the girls at their usual table. Levy, Erza, Juvia, and Cana were chatting with high energy.

Cana leaned back with a sly smile. “Told you guys!  Hi Lucy. You’re finally going to become one of us. I know we’ll all be great friends.”

Lucy smiled nervously, then turned to the girls, “Thanks Cana, I hope so too! So where are you all from?”

Levy answered first “Fiore!”

Her answer shocked Lucy! “No way ! I’m from Crocus, what a small world!”

Levy laughed, “Yeah! But honestly I’m happy to be in Magnolia! Fiore was a great place to grow up but it’s turned into a total shit show. “

“Yeah, tell me about it. In Crocus, let just say the political climate is … intense.”

They giggled together before Lucy’s eyes stopped at Juvia. “What about you? You live in the countryside, right? Why come all the way here if you go home every weekend? Wouldn’t it be easier to go somewhere closer?”

Juvia’s expression softened as she spoke. “This is the closest school to home. Plus since my family is a part of the founding families, we get to attend for free! I don’t mind going home every weekend. We Locksers have strong family values.”

Lucy nodded, impressed and grateful for Juvia’s honesty. “Thank you for being so open.”

Juvia chuckled softly. “Of course! To be honest I’m always an open book.”

Levy giggled at the remark, shaking her head fondly. “My father has been like a brother to Uncle Rave. Even though we’re not blood, I can tell you, it’s incredible to be part of a family like hers.”

Lucy hesitated for a moment, then added, “That makes me smile. Forgive me if I’m being too forward, but… I had a strange dream last night. Juvia, you  were…in trouble… I can’t really explain it but just know if you ever need anything I’m here for you.”

Her words caught the girls by surprise.

Erza tilted her head, curious. “Are you like Cana?”

“No? At least I don’t think so?” Lucy said quickly. “It’s just…sometimes I have dreams that feel really vivid, almost like I’m experiencing them. Most of the time, they don’t mean anything. But sometimes…they do.”

The girls exchanged looks, nodding in quiet understanding. Juvia spoke, clearing the tension.

“Juvia is thankful ! You don’t know me, yet you have offered support. I think I speak for all of us when I say I can tell Cana is right. We’ll be great friends!”

Rushing to her next class, Lucy’s thoughts were still tangled with their reaction.

She couldn’t tell if they were shocked or scared.

Her mind raced causing her to bump into someone.

She looked up to see a young man with striking pink hair.

For a split second, his eyes seemed completely black, then they were normal again.

“I’m so sorry,” he said, stepping back.

Lucy shook her head, slightly flustered. “It’s fine. I wasn’t looking where I was going.. To be honest, I am…a bit lost.”

“Do you need help?” he asked, his tone easy but oddly magnetic.

“I’m trying to find my next class,” she admitted.

He smiled, “I can walk you there! This way you can remember how to get there quickly! “

She moved, following him. The closer she got to him, the more she felt a sense of familiarity.

There was something about him she couldn’t quite place.

“ Here it is! And your name was?” he asked casually.

“Lucy! Thanks again…. uh ” she said.

“ Natsu.  It’s nice to meet you Lucy.”

“You too,” she replied, smiling before slipping into class.

Inside, she paused for a moment.

The name sounded familiar, echoing in her mind, but she couldn’t remember why.

Something told her it wouldn’t be long before she found out.

Chapter Text

Natsu hadn’t expected to feel anything that day.

He’d gotten used to moving through campus angry at his life.

It was far too complicated.

At 16 his father Igneel made it clear he was next in line.

Although he was the youngest son, he was the only son who possessed the demon trait.

That meant he was held to impossible standards.

Each day, school became an escape where he could be himself without the pressure of the crown.

Usually he would come on campus, go to class and hang out with Gray.

Gray being the only son to the original vampire family, he understood the weight.

The two bonded over their situations, training, laughing and making lots of jokes.

His college days repeated, almost like a cycle.

But today, his world was turned upside down.

Lucy.

Golden hair, soft eyes, a voice that still lingered in his ears.

She was different.

And after Natsu saw her, he couldn’t stop himself from finding Gray to tell him.

“She was the prettiest girl I’ve ever seen,” Natsu said as soon as he found him, half-smiling like he didn’t want to admit how much she’d rattled him. “Her name was Lucy.”

Gray didn’t even look impressed. He leaned back against the wall, arms crossed. “Careful. Ignia was with her yesterday.”

The words hit Natsu like a slap. His grin vanished, jaw clenching tight. “Of course he was,” he muttered bitterly.

“Ignia is somehow always first with half the effort. He gets the power that keeps him human. He gets to pretend he’s this good guy when really he’s not. Meanwhile I’m stuck in the demon realm, doing the deeds that should have been his as the eldest son. Even Zeref helps more than he does.”

His fists tightened. “And what do I get? He makes rumors and lies about me. He’s the worst brother.”

Gray nodded agreeing with Natsu, “It’s honestly ridiculous that he can control the dead at all. A living being shouldn’t have that power.” His gaze hardened. “Did you see Leo this afternoon? Ignia broke the sire compulsion and made him his bitch for half the day. That’s not supposed to happen unless by an original. It’s fucking up our natural order in our faction.”

Natsu sighed, the weight of his brother pressing heavy on his chest. “Yeah… Sorry about that dude. He does that on purpose to fuck with you. Don’t worry, I’ll make sure Leo’s okay later. Tell the others to take the blood bags Wendy made! It will help to build immunity against him.”

Gray’s expression softened, almost grateful. “Thanks. Good thing I’m an original so that shit doesn’t work on me.”

That earned a grin from Natsu. “Right. Imagine the strongest vampire in history turned into a puppet by the biggest scammer in the Dragneel family.”

Gray chuckled. “I would rather eat garlic and be staked.”

As they laughed, Natsu observed the subtle flicker of Gray’s attention.

He followed his concentration straight to the blue-haired girl across the courtyard. Juvia.

“Gray, honestly dude you should just talk to her instead of just staring like a creep,” Natsu teased, jabbing his elbow into Gray’s side. “But be careful. Remember she’s a part of the founding family.”

Gray stiffened. “I’m only staring because …...  I get a feeling she’s hiding something.  I want to talk to her, but with Erza still on the hunt for the vampires that hurt Freed last week, the last thing I want is to be on her radar. Especially since Juvia is one of her bestfriends.”

Natsu smirked, impatience bubbling in his tone. “Dude seriously? I know Erza is pretty scary but that’s a lame excuse. She already knows you don’t feed on humans. Just talk to her.” Natsu cupped his hands and called out, “Hey, Juvia!”

Gray nearly panicked. “What the hell are you doing—?”

Juvia looked over, confused. “Are you talking to me?”

“Yeah, come here!” Natsu waved her over, ignoring Gray’s glare.

She approached slowly, smoothing her skirt and tucking her hair behind her ear. Her gaze flicked nervously toward Gray before dropping to the ground. “Hey Natsu, Gray, What’s up?”

Gray’s throat tightened.

Every inch of her smelled sweet, intoxicating.

His instincts clawed at him. He swallowed hard, forcing the hunger down, but the words caught in his throat.

“I…” His voice cracked. He clenched his fists, nails digging into his palms, fighting himself. “I’m sorry. I can’t.”

Before Juvia could respond, Gray turned sharply and walked away, leaving only silence in his wake.

Natsu chuckled awkwardly. “Sorry, he’s a bit shy. Don’t mind him.” Then he jogged after Gray, leaving Juvia standing there in bewilderment.

By the time she returned to her dorm, Juvia was still unsettled.

She sent a quick text to Gajeel.

Juvia : Fullbuster tried to talk to me today .

The response was immediate.

Gajeel : I’ll handle it.

She sat on their couch as she contemplated why Gray had looked at her that way.

She was deep in thought, so much she hadn’t heard Levy enter the room.

Levy peeked over her shoulder, curious. “ I don't mean to interrupt…..But…  I have a question. How does it feel? To turn, I mean.”

Juvia smiled brightly, “It’s the most freeing experience you can imagine. The first time is painful of course. I mean you’re breaking every bone. But once you’re in your wolf form, it’s incredible. You’re faster, stronger, more alive.”

Levy bit her lip. “I hope I get to experience that. Being half wolf half human, it’s something I’ve always been jealous of.”

“Half or not,” Juvia said firmly, taking her hand. “Wolf or no wolf. You’re my family, and I’m proud to call you that. Don’t stress too much about turning, it’ll happen naturally.”

Levy’s eyes glistened as they hugged, the bond between them was truly unbreakable.

Across town, Lucy found herself at Ignia’s apartment.

He had texted her to hang out. Since she had no plans she figured why not?

The moment she stepped inside, her eyes widened. Security systems lined the walls with cameras, locks, and monitors.

“Wow,” she murmured. “Paranoid much?”

Ignia smirked, kicking the door shut. “With the way crime’s been rising, I like to be careful. Can’t be too safe these days.”

They settled on his couch, and Lucy tilted her head curiously. “So… tell me what you are passionate about? Besides safety?”

Ignia chuckled, surprised by the question. “Passionate? The dead, I guess. Sounds weird, doesn’t it? But I can explain. My first passion is science. My mom died when I was young and I could never understand why. She was only 35. I remember being so confused. I decided to  study kinesiology to learn all about the body. One day, I’d like to own a funeral home. I want to be able to help families through that process since I wasn’t.”

Lucy blinked. “I’m sorry to hear about your mom. When you put it like that, it makes sense and I hope you accomplish your dreams even if that means you like the dead a little too much.”

He laughed. “Thanks Lucy. When you put it like that, I guess I do enjoy the dead a little more than the living. Don’t tell me that scares you off.”

“Not at all,” she said softly. “As long as you don’t mind me rambling about magic now and then.”

His brow arched. “Magic?”

“Sorry, let me rephrase, it’s really manifestation,” she explained, her voice brightening. “All living things have energy. That energy can be used to attract what we want. My hope is to return home one day and become mayor like my mom. But I want to come home to something better. Every night I manifest the changes I hope to see.  As for school, I’m studying political science, and just… trying to be truly happy.”

Ignia studied her for a long moment, he could tell she was being vulnerable. His arms wrapped around her pulling her into his chest.

She embraced him. For the first time in a long while, it felt good to talk.

To be heard. To be accepted.

Chapter 3

This is more of an intro chapter still and also our B story with Gruvia

Chapter Text

Lucy’s night with Ignia ended better than she ever imagined.

They talked until nearly midnight. He drove her back to campus and they spoke more. When she finally looked at the time it was nearly 2 am.

“I had an amazing night Ignia, I have to go in before I’m locked out for the night.”

“Please, let me walk you to your door. It would make me feel better.” He begged.

“Thank you,” she said softly, a little shy, a little smitten.

Ignia smirked, his tone light but his eyes serious. “No problem. The freaks come out at night. Like I said before, please be safe and try not to wander around in the dark.”

She tilted her head. “Why?”

He hesitated, something flickering in his expression. “I can’t say. But… just trust me.”

Her heart skipped. She smiled, whispering, “I do.”

When Lucy closed the dorm door behind her, his words lingered in her mind.

What did he mean by that?

Her overthinking swelled, and with it, her magic overflowed.

The light bulbs in her room burst, showering sparks.

“Shit! Not again!” Lucy groaned, fumbling for her phone. She switched on the flashlight, then dragged herself to replace the bulbs, yet again.

The trash already overflowed with shattered glass and empty packages.

She sighed. “I really need to get my power under control…  I’m just glad mom sealed some of this. Maybe I should ask Jellal for help.”

The next day, Lucy spotted Jellal with Erza and nervously approached. “Um—can I borrow him for a second? Promise, it’s not… flirtatious. Just personal.”

Erza narrowed her eyes, but nodded.

When they were alone, Lucy blurted, “Do you… have any spells, potions, anything that can help me control my magic?”

Jellal’s brows shot up. “Wait, so you’re telling me the future supreme of one of the most powerful covens in the country can’t control her own magic?”

“Yes!” she snapped, embarrassed. “That’s exactly what I’m saying. My mom never taught me how to connect with it. I possess a massive amount of mana, but it was easier to protect me than to teach me I suppose. So I never practiced. But now… it’s… exploding out of me.  Although  my mom sealed some of it, it’s still too much for me to handle. Please help me!” She begged.

Jellal pinched the bridge of his nose. “That’s so Idiotic! Not to mention dangerous. Lucy, you could put everyone in danger!” He sighed. “But fine. I’ll help you. On one condition.”

Lucy stiffened. “What condition?”

“You tell Erza what you are.”

Her face paled. “No. I can’t.”

He leaned closer, voice firm but not unkind. “ I don’t know if she’s told you but Erza’s a slayer. She only wants to kill demons and vampires, things that feed on the innocent. She’s not your enemy. But she does mean everything to me, and I won’t risk our bond over secrets.”

Lucy swallowed hard, then nodded reluctantly.

When they walked back, Jellal announced, “ Erz, I just wanted to let you know I’ll be spending more time with Lucy.”

“Care to explain why?” Erza pressed.

Lucy’s throat tightened. But she forced the words out: “I-I … Look, I’m a witch.… actually next in line to be the supreme. But, I have immense magic power, and no control. I’ve already blown out five sets of lights today. I need Jellal's help.”

Erza blinked, then gave a short laugh. “Sheesh. Well… thanks for being honest. I’m sure Jellal can help you a great deal.  And Lucy… you should consider also telling the other girls. You might be surprised at how they react.”

Lucy exhaled in relief.

But her thoughts drifted back to Ignia. If this gets serious… would he accept her too?

Their messages had been nonstop, she felt like they were really connecting.

But she was scared. Being different, liking a human, it sounded complicated and dangerous. She wanted to keep everyone safe.

Elsewhere, Gajeel cornered Gray.

“Fullbuster. Let’s talk.”

Gray groaned. “Here it goes.” He excused himself from his friends.

Gajeel’s eyes narrowed. “Juvia is off-limits. Especially for you.”

Gray’s tone was flat. “Relax. I’m not into her.”

“Your eyes say otherwise.” Gajeel sneered. “Always ogling her like a starving animal. It’s disgusting. She’s the daughter of the founding family. You’re the trash that comes out at night.”

Gray’s jaw tightened. “Last I checked my family were also founders, we just lost the war.”

Gajeel leaned in, voice low. “Either way, leave her alone. Bloodsucker.”

Gray froze. “…She’s the last thing on my mind. I don’t even drink human blood.”

Gajeel smirked. “Sure you don’t. Listen, it’s my duty to protect my cousin. Breathe near Juvia again and a stake will be the least of your worries.” Flashing his bright yellow eyes.

Gray knew what that threat meant. Their families had been at war for decades.

Gajeel and his father were wolves. But Juvia, she smelled different.

He couldn’t explain what she was.

There were rumors their whole life that Juvia was special. She had a power different from those around her.

Gray didn’t know if it was true until her smell became insatiable.

It drove him insane because he was nearly mesmerized.

She was the first human he felt he couldn’t resist.

To be honest, Gajeel was right to protect her.

Every day he feared his hunger for her would consume him.

So he nodded, and walked away.

That night, hunger clawed at him.

Gray slipped into the woods, hunting.

He preferred deer.

Years ago he stopped drinking human blood because it was too messy, too dangerous.

His parents supplied blood bags at home from the hospital but the hunt is what he liked.

But as the centuries went on, he liked humans. He didn’t enjoy toying with people, or stalking them for blood.

So he switched to animals. In their world it was predator or prey.

As he stalked his deer, the hairs on his neck rose.

Someone was watching him.

He thought to himself, I’m an Original, I’m stronger and faster than who’s out there.

He crouched low, eyes locked on the deer until a scent hit him.

Sweet, impossible, distracting.

A wolf appeared from the shadows, its coat shimmering faintly blue under the moonlight.

Gray’s breath caught.

He knew wolves were lethal to his kind.

But instead of fear, he felt… wonder.

Before he could react, another wolf burst forward. This one smaller, rabid, its teeth bared. It lunged.

The blue wolf intercepted, slamming it to the ground. With a growl, it snapped, “As your alpha, I order you to leave. Now!”

The rabid wolf whimpered and obeyed.

Gray stared in shock as the blue wolf shifted, fur melting into pale skin, hair tumbling in waves. Juvia stood before him, her eyes blazing.

“Now you know my secret,” she said coldly. “And I know yours, fangs. Speak of it, and I’ll kill you myself. Also, hunt anywhere but our woods, these are sacred grounds.”

Gray’s chest tightened.

He should have been afraid.

But instead, joy flickered through him.

Juvia wasn’t just a wolf—she was the alpha. Wolf alphas were known to have special powers and an unmatched strength.

And that made him want her even more.

After sending out a text to meet at his place, he arrived home in a hurry.

Gray called out, his voice low but sharp. “Leo. Natsu. You’re never going to believe what happened to me.”

The two of them glanced at each other before moving closer, Natsu already smirking like he knew it was about to be good.

“What’s up?” Leo asked, sliding his hands into his pockets.

Gray rubbed the back of his neck, suddenly feeling stupid for even saying it out loud. “I finally figured out why she drives me insane…”

Natsu’s grin widened. “Let me guess, you stalked her again?”

Leo blinked. “Wait, are you talking about Juvia?”

“Yeah,” Gray muttered.

“This has to be good, especially after Gajeel's threat. Gray, you really are stupid.” Natsu burst out laughing. “Did you confess your love to her or something?”

Gray glared at him, but his voice was tense. “No, not even close. I figured out her secret. She is a wolf. But, she’s the alpha of her pack. That’s why she smells different, she is different. I know it sounds weird cause I’m a vamp but even in her wolf form .. she smells… sweet. It’s weird how drawn I am to her.”

Leo raised his brows, thoughtful instead of teasing. “You know Gray, they say your one true partner usually smells insane and is hard to resist.” He shrugged. “Not saying it’s true, but maybe it’s worth looking into.”

Gray froze. Then he and Natsu exchanged one look before bursting into uncontrollable laughter.

“Yeah, right!” Gray wheezed. “Like my one true partner would be a wolf. That’s absurd.”

“Fates got one hell of a sense of humor if that’s the case,” Natsu snorted.

The laughter died down, and Gray shot Natsu a look. “Speaking of girls… did you ever talk to Lucy again?”

Natsu’s grin returned instantly. “Not yet, but I will soon. He won’t beat me this time.”

Leo shifted uncomfortably. “Lucy… the name sounds familiar. Is that the one Ignia’s with?”

Natsu nodded, “Unfortunately.”

“Yeah, I don’t think that’s a good idea.” Leo hesitated, then added, “I overheard Lucy talking to Jellal and Erza today. Turns out she’s a witch. The future supreme.. And she can’t control her magic yet.”

The words hit.

“No Fucking Way,” Gray muttered.

“You’ve gotta be shitting me,” Natsu groaned. “This night just keeps getting weirder.”

The door creaked open, and Silver stepped inside.

His eyes swept over the boys before he said, “Good. You’re all here. I just left our faction meeting. I have news.”

“What the heck is a faction?” Natsu replied clearly confused.

“Must you always be so confused Natsu, I know you’re dead but don’t you still have a brain!” Gray aggressively scolded.

Silver lifted his hand, silencing the room.

They all straightened, listening to his words .

He began, “Factions are like families. They’re the different supernatural groups that all exist together. We have these meetings to discuss any threats, changes , and more. Witches and Oracles are one faction. They’re the source of nearly every other faction. Their magic twisted nature itself, and nature responded so they keep the balance. Take vampires—we were given eternal life and strength, but cursed with the need to drink blood.”

Gray and Leo exchanged a glance.

Silver continued. “Then you have the Wolves. They’re the founders of this territory. A hundred years ago, wolves and vampires fought neck and neck. In the end, vampires weren’t strong enough. The Locksers remain the strongest wolf bloodline in history. Their daughter is said to be an Alpha and powerful beyond comprehension. Beautiful, too. Some even whisper she has sire powers, because people can’t help but follow her lead.”

Natsu cut his eyes toward Gray.

Gray clenched his jaw, pretending he hadn’t noticed.

Silver pressed on. “The last faction is ours. Demons and Vampires. Ignia, with his necromancy, technically falls under this faction as well, even though he hasn’t died.”

“Yeah, yet.” Natsu muttered darkly.

Gray swallowed before asking, “Dad… is it possible for your one true partner to be from another faction?”

Silver frowned. “I’ve never heard of it. But if it were… it would depend on their attributes. Why do you ask?”

Natsu opened his mouth, but Gray cut in quickly. “No reason. I’m just curious since someone has been testing my restraint.”

Silver’s eyes lingered on him for a moment before he finally said, “Gray, now more than ever, please remember restraint. The faction warned vamps about bad feeding habits. Make sure you all stay out of trouble.”

The guys nodded in agreement.

Chapter Text

The next day at school, Natsu felt restless.

He couldn’t explain why, but something inside him kept pulling him toward Lucy.

It wasn’t just curiosity, it was like instinct.

His legs began moving, searching for her like it was normal.

But when he found her, the sight that greeted him fueled him with rage: Ignia, draping his arm possessively around her shoulders.

Lucy looked… happy. Too happy.

For a witch who still struggled to control her own magic, being so close to someone who thrived on controlling others was dangerous.

Ignia was poison, and Natsu knew it.

Granted, Lucy would have to die before Ignia could ever puppeteer her.

But Natsu wouldn’t put it past his brother to try.

A flash of memory burned through him.

His entire life, Natsu lived in the spotlight. Naturally gifted, he faced harsh scrutiny from his father.

Ignia, his older brother, despite having half the power, was praised for everything.

It made him arrogant, so much that he began to treat his siblings like second class citizens.

When they were younger, Ignia never missed a chance to torment their little sister Wendy.

She was bright, gentle, endlessly curious and often buried her nose in books about healing and medicine while other children played.

Although she was a demon, she wanted to fix things, to save lives.

Ignia mocked her for it. “Why heal the living when the dead are stronger? You’re wasting your time, little sister. Maybe I’ll make you my puppet one day, then you’ll finally be useful.”

Natsu would always step between them, fists clenched, protecting Wendy.

“Ignia, leave her alone. I won’t let that happen!” Natsu would scream.

But at that age, they were still too weak. Iginia would often control them, making them do his evil deeds, then exiting leaving them to take the punishment.

Zeref, their second eldest brother, left long before.

He refused to be tied to the family’s darkness, walking away to pursue peace and reason.

He found love with the Fae princess, Mavis.

Once he chose her, they barely saw him anymore.

So the role of protector fell to Natsu.

However, when Natsu was 16, Igneel, their father, made it clear that Ignia would never be king. “A ruler must be more than cruel words. He must be strength. He must be fire. You are neither, Ignia.”

Since Zeref had abandoned his duty, Igneel decreed that Natsu would one day sit as Demon King.

Natsu refused. “I don’t want to be King. I don’t want a throne.”

But Igneel didn’t care, “Natsu my son, you are the best suited to carry on our legacy.”

Ignia sneered. Although clearly jealous, he spewed “ I suppose it makes sense. A vile, disgusting being like you is perfect to lead demons, the lowest of the low.”

That day, Natsu nearly killed him.

After years of verbal abuse, years of Ignia using his powers on his siblings, Natsu was finally stronger than him.

That meant he could no longer control him for his own pleasure.

It was the day his demon power had taken over. In this state, he loses himself and his humanity.

That day he would have killed his brother.

The only thing that stopped him was Wendy’s cry “Natsu, please stop!l her small hands gripping him, begging, “It’s not you! Don’t let him turn you into him. Please!”

After that, Natsu stayed away from Ignia as much as he could.

And now… Ignia had his claws around Lucy.

A girl so radiant, so untainted.

It made Natsu’s blood boil.

He walked toward them, voice steady despite the rage burning in his chest.

“Hey, Lucy!”

Lucy turned, surprise flashing across her face. For a moment she looked uncertain, like she was trying to recognize him. Ignia cut in smoothly.

“Oh, so you’ve met my idiot brother, Natsu. Remember what I told you the other night?”

Lucy blinked, glancing between them. Then her expression softened with realization.

“Natsu! Thank you so much for helping me the other day. I didn’t realize you were Ignia’s brother… You don’t look alike, but I can definitely tell you’re related now!” She turned firmly to Ignia. “Ignia, let’s talk later. I want to talk to Natsu. If he’s your family, it’s important for me to know him.”

Ignia’s jaw tightened. “That’s not necessary. It’s not safe to be around Natsu.”

Natsu opened his mouth, ready to argue, but Lucy spoke first.

“Sure it is. I’ve already been alone with him once, and I’m perfectly fine. Right?” She smiled faintly at Natsu before continuing. “I know what it’s like to have family problems. I can’t ignore them. And if I care for you, Ignia, then it’s important to me to understand your brother too.”

Ignia hesitated. He knew Lucy wouldn’t yield.

With uncertainty in his voice, he finally said, “Fine. But don’t forget who you belong to.” He pressed a kiss against her cheek, a blatant act of possession, before walking off.

The kiss sent a surge of rage tearing through Natsu’s veins.

Suddenly his demon power began to take over. The world was about to blur until he saw her big brown eyes.

His fists burned with the urge to strike, but he couldn’t be seen like that, not in front of her.

Lucy .

When Ignia was gone, Natsu exhaled slowly. “Thanks for trusting me.” His voice was quiet, almost vulnerable. “Ignia… he tells everyone I’m the worst. That I’m dangerous. People believe him before I even get the chance to speak.”

Lucy studied him, her eyes soft. “That’s… sad. You sound like someone who needs a friend.” She tilted her head with a small smile. “I’ll be your friend—on one condition.”

Natsu raised a brow. “What’s that?”

“Promise me you’ll never hurt me.”

Her words knocked the wind out of him. He froze, staring at her.

Hurt her? The thought was unthinkable.

“Lucy,” he said firmly, “I would never hurt you. Ever.”

She smiled then, relief flooding her features. “Good.”

They walked together, conversation spilling easily between them.

Lucy told him about her family and how they had caged her in protection, treating her like a pawn instead of a daughter, until she had grown into an adult who barely knew how to make her own choices.

Jellal and Erza had been a great help, but she was still struggling with being independent.

Natsu listened, really listened, before saying, “You must be incredible if Jellal helped you. He doesn’t help anyone. Especially if it takes him from Erza.”

Lucy’s heart gave a soft, unfamiliar flutter. “You’re… different than I expected, Natsu. More thoughtful.”

Hours passed like minutes.

Then Natsu’s gaze flicked across the courtyard, catching Gray—staring, as always, at Juvia.

“Does Gray like her?” Lucy whispered, following his line of sight.

Natsu snorted. “Gray doesn’t like anyone. More like tolerates. But Juvia… She's different. He’ll never admit it, but we all know.”

Lucy tilted her head. “The way he’s looking at her… it’s like he wants to eat her.”

“Honestly?” Natsu chuckled. “He does. Just not the way you think. If you knew, you would see Gray is keeping his distance because he cares for her. I think she calms something inside him. He always says she smells good. One day, I think they'll end up together. But it’s more complicated than either of us can understand.”

Lucy glanced at Gray again.

And this time, she saw it: the way his tense posture eased the moment Juvia walked near, as though her very presence soothed the devil within him.

Natsu walked Lucy back to her room, he promised her that she would be safe.

The truth was, she did feel safer with him there.

She couldn’t explain it, she hadn’t known him long, but Natsu already had a hold on her.

When they reached her door, Lucy hesitated before glancing up at him.

“Do you… want to come in for a few minutes?”

He shook his head at first. “Nah. I don’t want to disturb your peace.”

“You’re not,” she said quickly, her voice soft but sure. “I just… don’t really want our talk to end yet.”

That tugged a grin from him. “Well, when you put it like that, who am I to deny you?”

The moment he stepped into her room, Natsu stiffened. Her magic hit him like a wave.

He thought to himself, She hides this well. No wonder no one suspects how strong she really is.

Lucy moved to the small table. “Want some tea?”

He laughed. “Not my thing.”

She smiled faintly, then lowered her eyes. “Can I be honest?”

“Of course.”

Lucy twisted her fingers together, nervous but determined. “It’s not really mine either.”

They locked eyes, giggling. “Lucy, you’re pretty cool!” Natsu joked.

She smiled slightly, “ Thanks, you too. Listen, I haven’t told Ignia this. Only Jellal and Erza know. But… I feel like I can trust you.” Her gaze lifted to meet his. “I’m not really normal. I can sense you aren’t either, maybe that’s why it feels easy to say this… but I’m a witch.”

Natsu widened his eyes, playing surprised even though he already knew. “A witch? Like a coven witch?”

She nodded. “I’m supposed to take over the coven one day… but not how I am now. I’m too weak. I want to get stronger.”

Something in her vulnerability hit him deep. His expression softened.

“I’m… different too.” He lowered his head, almost ashamed. “Ignia isn’t like me. He’s human. But… our family, we’re demons.”

He braced himself for her recoil, for the disgust.

Instead, Lucy leaned forward, eyes wide with wonder. “Demons? I’ve heard of them, but… I’ve never actually met one. They say your powers are the strongest of all supernaturals and you can even change forms.”

He rubbed the back of his neck. “Yeah, mostly true. But Gray’s probably the only supernatural I can’t beat. We’re a true tie.”

Her brows rose. “Gray? He’s a supernatural too?”

“Shit—” Natsu smacked his forehead. “Please don’t tell anyone, but… Gray’s family are the first vampires, we call them originals. That’s why he can walk in the sun, live like a normal guy. The rest of the vampires need rings to walk in the sun. ”

Lucy frowned, thinking of Juvia. “Then it’s not safe for him to look at her the way he does.”

Natsu leaned back against the wall, arms crossed. “Yeah it isn’t. But give Gray a chance! I honestly think Juvia is into him as well. But around here… nothing is what it seems.”

Lucy hesitated, then asked, “So… what kind of demon are you?”

“The fire demon, the king to be exact.”

Her eyes went wide. “King? But you’re so young!”

“Technically prince,” he corrected with a small smirk. “My father’s still alive. But I’m next in line. My family’s had unmatched fire gifts for generations. I trained twenty hours a day just to master it.”

She swallowed, then whispered, “Would you… train me?”

His smirk faded, replaced by seriousness. “I don’t know. I promised not to hurt you.”

“I’m not afraid of you,” she said firmly. “If I’m going to control my magic, I need to push myself. I know it’ll hurt sometimes, but I need this.”

His breath caught. For so long, he’d believed he was too dangerous, too unstable to let anyone close.

But somehow, the way  Lucy’s voice broke through that shell, through every wall he’d built to protect her from himself, scared him.

Their eyes locked. It was like gravity, pulling them closer, inch by inch.

Neither of them moved at first, yet somehow the space between them grew smaller and smaller.

Natsu’s hands twitched at his sides, aching to reach for her, to pull her in, while Lucy’s heart hammered in her chest, the air thick with unspoken words.

Her lips parted just slightly.

His breath brushed against her skin.

For a fleeting moment, it felt inevitable that they would close the distance.

But at the very last second, Natsu froze.

His eyes widened, panic flickering through them.

He tore his gaze away, stepping back as if distance was the only thing keeping her safe.

“I… I can’t,” he muttered, voice rough.

Natsu studied her for a long moment before sighing. “But about training, I’ll help. But only if Juvia agrees to let us train in the countryside.”

“Why the countryside?”

“You’ll understand when you see it.”

He pushed off the wall, heading toward the door. “I should get going. Thanks for trusting me, Lucy. You’re… really amazing. I hope things work out with Ignia.”

Her cheeks warmed at the mention of his name, her heart betraying her with a flutter she didn’t expect.

When the door closed behind him, Lucy pressed a hand to her chest.

The feeling overwhelmed her, so sharp and strong it made her breath hitch.

The second she admitted to herself that she liked him, her powers surged until her room went dark with another blackout.

Thanks for your patience :) I am taking my time writing each chapter and I changed this one up a few times! I just honestly love that everyone loves Lucy! Shes that girl

Chapter Text

The next morning, Lucy woke to a string of missed messages from Ignia.

Ignia: Where are you? Are you safe?

Ignia: Don’t make me come find you.

Rubbing the sleep from her eyes, she quickly typed back.

Lucy: I’m so sorry, I just needed some rest.

Ignia: Good. I thought I was going to have to kill my brother.

Lucy: No violence needed. He’s actually pretty cool.

Ignia: That’s only because you don’t truly know him yet.

She rolled her eyes at his response, shoving her phone into her bag before making her way on campus.

Her eyes met Cana’s as the girls gathered at their usual table. Lucy remembered Natsu’s words from last night.

Nothing is what it seems.

She was determined to make sense of what the hell was going on at this school. She approached the table slowly thinking of a good ice breaker.

“Cana, how are you drinking this early?” Lucy asked, her voice full of worry and surprise.

Cana smirked, swirling the flask. “Keeps the visions away. Sometimes I just want to feel… normal.”

Lucy tilted her head. “Visions?”

Cana’s smirk faltered, her eyes suddenly far away. “Sorry, I forgot. I’m way too plastered to explain. Juvia.. give Lucy a life update.”

Juvia startled, “M-Me? There’s no update?”

Lucy leaned in, lowering her voice. “You don’t have to, Juvia. But, I want you to know that you can trust me. I can tell you’re different. I can’t explain it, but… I just know. I’m different too.”

Juvia’s lips parted, but before she spoke, she exchanged a silent glance with Levy.

They were both of them almost startled by Lucy’s intuition.

Finally, Juvia’s voice stretched in the air.

“I am different,” she admitted softly. “One day, I will lead my family. Our differences result in me leaving every weekend. It’s  safer for everyone. Lets just say …  we have .. limitations.”

Lucy let out a little laugh, trying to ease the tension. “What are you, a wolf or something?”

The table went silent.

Lucy blinked. “Wait. Really?”

Juvia gave a small nod. “I’m the Alpha of my pack. The only hope for my people. Most weekends, we turn… but I’ve been searching for something to help. So far, I’m the only one with the ability to resist it. But I want them to have the freedom of choice, too.”

Lucy’s chest ached at the weight in her voice. “Then let me help. But… I have a favor to ask.”

Juvia raised her brows. “What kind of favor?”

Lucy took a shaky breath. “I’m a witch. But not just any witch. I am the future supreme. But, my power is overwhelming, and I can’t always control it. If you’ll let me, I’ll help you with your cure. In exchange, I just need a piece of land where I can train without… hurting anyone.”

Juvia stared at her, surprised. “Would you really do that?”

“Of course,” Lucy smiled faintly. “That’s what friends are for, right?” “But, I do wish to train with Natsu. I know your grounds are sacred so I wanted to ask if that was okay first.”

Levy’s jaw dropped. “Isn’t… isn’t he Ignia’s brother?”

“Yes,” Lucy admitted, “but its not what you think. Natsu is stronger than Ignia, and I can’t train with just anyone. My magic—”

“—is too much,” Erza finished gently. “Lucy is also working with Jellal, she’s getting stronger. But you know Jellal. He isn’t suited for combat drills. Natsu is an excellent choice. It makes sense.”

Juvia frowned faintly. “Be careful. The dead can be… deceitful.”

Lucy tilted her head. “You mean like Gray Fullbuster?”

Juvia flushed instantly, waving her hands. “N-No, I—! I was only speaking in general!”

Cana let out a tipsy laugh. “Please. Juvia’s got the hots for the stripper.”

“Stripper?” Lucy repeated, confused.

Levy sighed, half exasperated, half amused. “Gray has a bad habit of overheating and… shedding layers. It’s embarrassing, honestly. But Juvia never seems to mind.”

Juvia buried her face in her hands. “Because it feels like he’s doing it on purpose! To make me… hot and bothered.” She peeked through her fingers, cheeks scarlet. “I’d be lying if I said he wasn’t attractive, but… it makes no sense. A wolf and a vampire? Wolves are alive, magical. Vampires aren’t living beings. How could I ever protect my people if I…” Her voice trailed off.

Erza reached across the table, kindly stating, “Don’t burden yourself with that now. Look at Lucy! If a witch can train with a demon, then why can’t a wolf speak to a vampire?”

Cana chuckled into her flask. “That’s rich, coming from a slayer who’s supposed to kill them both.”

Erza’s gaze sharpened. “I want to slay those who hurt the innocent. Gray doesn’t feed on humans. And Natsu… he’s only ever fought to defend others. That’s the truth I’ve seen.”

The words left both Lucy and Juvia silent.

Behind the wall next to the open space, Gray had used his vamp sense to ease drop.

He normally didn’t but he was curious of Lucy’s intentions. He could tell Natsu cared for her and didn’t want her to be entangled with Ignia and his scheme.

But he never expected to hear Erza’s words.

Sure, had grown up together with Natsu. But things were different now.

Erza had always been the force that kept them grounded, like a terrifying older sister who refused to let them stray too far.

But once her powers awakened, their paths split.

Erza walked in the light, clinging to justice, while he and Natsu were pulled deeper into the shadows of what they were.

Hearing her acknowledge their restraint now was a shock. But it warmed something inside him he hadn’t realized was cold.

She made it sound like he was a good person.

Then Juvia’s voice reached him, soft and flustered.

He couldn’t help the quiet chuckle at the fact that Juvia had noticed he was stripping for her.

The way she struggled to find words to say meant she obviously found him attractive.

Plus, it wasn’t that Juvia disliked him, it was that she felt guilty for liking him. She couldn’t protect her people if she gave in to the feeling she had for their pack's enemy.

Her declaration only made him smile more.

He respected because it was clear she was loyal, determined and a great leader.

The fact that she could change forms but still carried the weight of an entire pack on her shoulders was admirable.

She was a true queen in the making.

Elsewhere, Lucy’s afternoon took a different turn.

She met Ignia outside the market and he was different .

“So,” he drawled, gaze flicking over her. “How was your night with Natsu?”

Lucy blinked at the bluntness, “It was fine. We talked a bit and he encouraged me to talk to the girls. This morning I spent time with them. Honestly, it was really nice. I feel closer to them than ever.”

Ignia expressed the faintest smirk, “That’s good to hear. And what about us? Do you think you feel closer… with me?”

Her chest tightened. She hadn’t expected him to ask so directly, but maybe that was the push she needed. “I’m happy,” she admitted softly. “With you. I feel protected… I feel like I can be honest about who I really am.”

His smirk deepened. “I’d be honored if you felt safe enough to trust me with the real you.”

She exhaled, He sounded so eager to hear, it made her worry.

Had he already known?

Still, she told Natsu so she needed to tell him too.  “I’m a witch. I kept my distance from everyone because my moms always protected me. I wasn’t used to so much  exposure to the outside world. But, I’m learning and growing… mainly thanks to you and my friends. It feels super good.”

Ignia’s golden eyes widened, acting surprised, but he’d always known.

The moment he met her, he sensed her raw, unrefined power.

He’d targeted her for it.

A witch without mastery was easy to bend.

Lucy Heartfilia, the one destined to rise as supreme, would make him unstoppable if he could wrap chains around her will.

The thought of it thrilled him.

Yet his voice was gentle. “Lucy, I’m touched you told me. Don’t worry, your secret’s safe with me.” He paused, leaning closer. “Since you’ve been honest, I’ll do the same. I’m human… but not powerless. I can control the dead.”

Lucy’s heart jolted. “What?”

He nodded calmly. “Take Leo, for instance.  Remember how he just randomly apologized? That was me. I can control any of the dead weaker than myself. I can’t touch originals like Gray, or demons as strong as Natsu. But pretty much everyone else is easy prey for me.”

Her breath caught, horrified and curious all at once. “That’s… that’s necromancy.”

Ignia’s expression darkened, though he kept his smile. “It comes at a price. Using it corrodes my mind, little by little. I try not to use it often. Since you trusted me, I wanted to return that honesty.”

Lucy shivered. She had thought when Natsu said Ignia was human, that meant ordinary. But this? This was different.

Dangerous.

“You shouldn’t toy with the dead,” she said firmly. “Witches believe in the balance of nature, and disturbing it has consequences you can’t imagine.”

Ignia’s smirk softened into something charming. “Then you’ll be glad to know I rarely use it. And for you, Lucy, I’ll be even more careful.”

His gaze lingered on her, and then he reached down, grabbing her hand. “Come on. Let’s grab lunch. My treat of course. I want to thank you for not judging me.”

He led her to a small café, where they sat close, talking quietly over small plates.

Ignia had an aura that was almost intoxicating, hard to shake.

He spoke to her with such powerful words.

She felt her cheeks warming with each compliment he whispered.

Yesterday with Natsu, she’d felt something raw, something real.

But here, under Ignia’s gaze, she found herself forgetting all about Natsu.

“You know,” he murmured, “I could tell you are an incredible person. Your energy is contagious, not to mention your beauty is beyond words.”

Her heart fluttered at the compliment. “I… Thank you. Your words, they make my heart skip a beat.”

Ignia’s eyes glinted, “I mean it, Lucy. When you walked into my life, I felt like everything changed. Now, I finally feel like someone sees me for more than just… shortcomings.”

Her thoughts slowed, he was being so vulnerable. It was a new side to him that she was happy to see.

She felt her heart start to flutter, her mind telling her to kiss him.

Ignia smirked.

He could feel it, her emotions being influenced by his charm. It wasn't like using his power, but it was enough.

He learned early on, women will do anything for the man they love.

His hope was that she would fall in love with him.

And that love would also be enough to keep her away from Natsu.

“Stay with me today,” he said casually, brushing his thumb over her knuckles, “Forget everything else. I want it to be just … us.”

Lucy hesitated, she was scared to give her heart to anyone. She felt guilty because she felt something with his brother.

But when Ignia leaned closer, his breath brushing her ear, the warmth of that thought was drowned out.

“Okay,” she whispered.

Ignia smiled with joy.

He’d won this round. He’d win every round if it meant he could have Lucy.

Lucy smiled back faintly, feeling nervous but happy.

Ignia was a man she could see herself falling for and she would regret not exploring their connection.

They sat on the couch, their fingers intertwined while a movie played quietly in the background.

Lucy’s head rested against Ignia’s neck, it was a level of comfort foreign to the pair.

Suddenly, Ignia felt his heart beating hard, he realized he was nervous.

Lucy shifted slightly, her voice teasing. “Your heart’s racing…”

Ignia froze, until she added with a shy smile, "Don't be nervous, you make mine do the same.”

Her honesty disarmed him.

Growing up different, he always felt so lonely. There was no person, family included, he could seek comfort in.

Hell, when he met Lucy , he’d told himself she was just another pawn in his plan.

But in that moment, her touch felt like everything. The warmth he felt could only compare to his late mother and the hugs she gave him when he cried as a child.

Was she breaking down darkness within him?

“You know, I wanted to thank you,” she whispered,

His face twisted as his eyes dilated at the sight of her smile, appearing curious to her answer.

“For giving me normal moments. Growing up, it’s all I’ve wanted for longer than I can remember.”

Ignia’s breath caught. Without thinking, he leaned in, brushing his lips against hers.

The kiss heated up as the spark between them felt electric.

Ignia realized Lucy was different, she had a way with words, a way to make you feel so valued, so uplifted.

She had potential to become his weakness.

His Achilles.

When they pulled back, Lucy’s cheeks were flushed.

He could barely form words, only managing to say, “Thank you for existing.”

She looked at him, steady. “ I really care about you Ignia. This is all new to me, but what isn’t new is honesty. I wanted to let you know, I’m going to start training with Natsu. I want to be strong enough to stand confidently at your side.”

The words confused him. Did she see him as weak? But he reflected on his own words, Natsu was stronger.

Her words spoke to him, she wants to stand by me?

In that moment, he decided if she meant those words then he’d make sure she never needed to stand anywhere else.

He cupped her face, kissed her again, slower this time, as his thumb ran across her cheek. His voice was low, “That’s not a problem. Tonight was truly special. I hope your words live honestly because there’s no turning back now.”

Chapter 6

Notes:

Happy Gruvia day! I didnt really know how I wanted to take this part but here it is!!

Chapter Text

The next day, Lucy spotted Natsu and Gray standing together near the edge of the courtyard.

She waved, practically bouncing as she approached.

“Natsu! Juvia agreed,” she said excitedly. “We can start training this week!”

Her enthusiasm was so pure that Natsu couldn’t help but grin. “She said yes ?! That’s awesome! I’m excited.,” he replied softly.

Gray rolled his eyes, muttering something under his breath, but Lucy turned to him with a smile. “Oh, and Gray… you should come too. I’m sure Juvia would love to see you.”

That caught him off guard.

For the first time in a long while, Lucy saw Gray’s icy demeanor crack into the smallest smile. “I’ll… think about it,” he said. “Last time I was there it wasn't exactly… decent.”

Natsu chuckled. “He saw Juvia naked.”

Gray smacked his forehead. “You’re an idiot.”

Lucy blinked, confused. Natsu explained quickly, “When wolves change, they lose their clothes. It's another reason they stay in the countryside.”

Lucy smirked. “Well, from what I’ve learned it sounds like payback for all the times Gray strips.”

Natsu burst into laughter. “Lucy you’re hilarious.”

Lucy left soon after, still smiling.

When she was gone, Natsu’s expression softened. “She’s something else.”

Gray nodded. His tone grew serious. “You’ve got to make her stronger before Ignia gets his way. You and I both know he’s planning something with Lucy. We can’t let him win.”

Natsu’s jaw tightened. “I know. I won’t let him take her. I like her.. more than I think I have ever liked a girl before. ”

Gray let the past hang unspoken. Instead, he admitted, “That’s how I feel about Juvia. When I saw her that night… I can’t get her out of my head.”

Natsu smirked. “Perve.”

Gray shot him a glare. “Not a perve. I’d have to be blind not to notice how perfect she is. Head to toe. It’s… natural. Even if it doesn’t make sense, I just want to be around her.”

“That’s what a true partner sounds like,” Natsu teased.

Gray’s voice turned sharp. “Don’t say that. Because… I’m starting to think it’s true.”

Natsu tilted his head. “What about Ultear? If she finds out, she’ll make it her mission to kill Juvia.”

Gray’s eyes darkened. “Ultear’s strong. But Juvia… Juvia’s stronger. She hasn’t even touched her full potential yet. Wolves are faster than vampires in their beast form, and a wolf bite is one of the few things that can kill us.”

Natsu smirked. “That makes sense. A girl perfect for you needs to be strong. Only the strong can protect.”

“I think I am going to tell my parents tonight. The more I see her, the more I crave her. It’s getting hard to control myself around her. I need their help.”

“That’s smart. I’m going to also keep an eye on Ignia, I have to protect her.”

They both agreed they had a mission, to protect the girls they cared for.

That night, Gray returned home. Silver and Mika were waiting.

“How’s courting Ultear?” Silver asked.

Gray sighed. “Fine. Except she’s jealous and clingy, and calls me constantly.”

“Ah, young love,” Silver chuckled.

Gray rolled his eyes, eating more rare steak. “Sure, love.”

But Mika’s eyes narrowed. “You’re hesitating. Speak, Gray.”

Gray’s palms began to sweat unnaturally as he spoke.  “I think I found my true partner. It’s not Ultear. This girl, her scent is sweet, consuming. Nothing else satisfies me. I crave her, almost to the point I can’t stop myself.”

Mika and Silver exchanged a startled glance. “Another girl?” Mika asked. “You said she smells sweet?”

Gray nodded. “Exactly. To the point where it’s maddening.”

Silver’s voice dropped. “That sounds like your true partner. Who is she?”

Gray swallowed hard. “She’s… Not in our faction. She’s a member of the founding family.”

Their faces fell.

“A wolf?” Mika’s voice was sharp. “How could an original vampire have a wolf for his one true partner?”

Gray clenched his fists. “I can’t explain it either. But, I won’t deny what I feel. Her smell, it’s addictive. I’m afraid I will hurt her or worse, expose our family.”

Mika and Silver looked at each other, “Gray, as faction leaders, it’s our duty to protect our family and our faction. This is something we need to seriously discuss. Stay away from her for now.”

Gray grunted. In one ear and out the other he thought.

He left before their protests.

Mika’s face was pale. “This is dangerous. The Lockser family could kill us all. Gray won’t be able to control his hunger. Once you have found your true partner, you can’t stop obsessing until you’re bound. He’s going to be blinded by love.”

Silver shook his head. “If Gray feels this bond, The wolf does too. And in both our cultures, once the bond is there, it can’t be broken. They’ll have to find each other. That’s how it works.”

Mika whispered, “Yeah, I know. We need to find out who his mate is. That way we can protect him. Although this is certain to destroy the alliance with Ultear’s family.”

Silver sighed. “If a wolf is truly his mate, that alliance will prove more beneficial. I’m sure Ultear will not like this. But I'm sure, if this girl is Gray's one true partner then she’ll prove herself worthy. If not, Ultear will tear her apart. Simple as that.”

Gray retreated to his room and checked his phone. Dozens of missed texts from Ultear.

Ultear: Why didn’t you answer?

Ultear:  Why are you following Lucy, Erza, Cana, Levy… and that girl Juvia on FioreFun?

Gray: They’re classmates. Don’t make a big deal out of it.

Ultear: Don’t lie. I see the way that Juvia looks at you. I don’t like it.

Gray exhaled slowly.

Gray: Look, I can’t control how people look at me.

For a long moment, no response. Then it came.

Ultear: Our families are set to combine to create the strongest faction. If this girl may challenge that, then I challenge her.

Gray’s blood ran cold.

Gray: Ultear, no. Be mature. Acting irrationally will only make things worse. She’s a founding family member.

Ultear: Mature is killing her to ensure we have no distractions. Immature is pretending I don’t notice and being unhappy.

Gray cursed under his breath.

Gray: Listen, things for me are complicated enough, do us both a favor and don’t make it worse. Might I remind you the Lockers are the only family we couldn’t beat.

That same night, Juvia tossed and turned in her bed. She dreamed of Gray, his piercing gaze, his lips inches from hers.

She jolted awake, heat coursing through her body.

“Great,” she muttered. “I’m in heat.”

Her mother entered quietly. “Time of the month?”

“Unfortunately,” Juvia admitted, then hesitated. “And… I keep dreaming about a boy at school.”

Her mother froze. “Dreaming of the opposite sex during heat? That’s a sign you have met your mate.”

Juvia’s stomach dropped. “That’s impossible. He’s not like us.”

“Levy’s half-human, half-wolf,” her mother reminded.

“Yes, but… Gray isn’t living. He’s… a Fullbuster.”

Her mother’s eyes widened. “An Original vampire? Juvia…”

Juvia’s voice shook. “I know. It terrifies me. The one I crave, craves the blood in my veins.”

Her mother sat beside her. “You must not tell your father yet. If you’ve felt it, he’s likely felt it too. That means you’ll be a target. Silver explained at our last faction meeting that he was being courted with the second vampire family for an alliance. It’s likely his bride won’t take kindly to this news. This will make you a target for that family. Gajeel will stay at your side and please try to stay away from Gray.”

Juvia felt her inner wolf cry. The twist of her heart felt cruel. But she had to think of her people.

She agreed, not wanting to think deeper about it.

At family dinner, the truth spilled. It started with her mom admitting she’s in heat.

Followed by Gajeel explaining school would be hell.

When Rave asked why, Gajeel explained she already had one of the vampires nearly stalking her. With her in heat, it would only make him hungrier.

“I’ll call Silver right away. If any of those blood suckers even breathe on my daughter! ,” Rave snapped.

“Don’t dad!” Juvia burst out. “Look, I think he’s already restraining himself. I can feel it. My inner wolf already told me. Plus, the guy is Silver's son.”

Silence fell. Her father’s eyes narrowed, but her mother explained the signs.

Rave sat in disbelief. He couldn't fathom the words, his daughter with a vampire?

What would it mean for their faction?

Finally, her father spoke. “If fate has chosen this, we cannot ignore it. But we must be cautious. We will not weaken our queen, but we will not risk her either.”

Juvia lowered her head. “I understand.”

Then she added softly, “Lucy and I will train tomorrow. We’re working on giving wolves the power to shift at will. If we succeed, our people will be the strongest.”

Her father’s stern expression softened into pride. “You are becoming an excellent ruler. Continue your training. Protect your pack and stay away from the original until we have a plan.”

Chapter Text

The next morning, Lucy felt the mist on her palms as she approached the open field using the instructions Juvia had given.

A bright yellow filled the sky as the sun began to blaze.

As she continued to walk, she suddenly relaxed as her eyes met the familiar pink hair in the distance.

Lucy stood across from Natsu, fidgeting with her hands. Her kiss with Ignia had been full of her wants and wishes, in that moment everything made sense.

But as Natsu smiled at her waving so cheerfully, in the pits of her stomach, she felt like she had betrayed him.

The sounds of his voice brought her back to reality, “Hey Luce, you look nervous! Don’t be! Today is going to be amazing! I promised not to hurt you, remember.”

“Yeah I know, It’s just.. I  haven’t really… used my powers since moving here like this,” she admitted softly, chewing on her lip. “What if I hurt someone or worse destroy something?”

Natsu grinned, fangs flashing as his eyes sparked with excitement. “That’s what training’s for, Luce. Honestly—” he bounced on his heels, fire flickering at his fists—“I’m kinda excited to see how strong you are. So c’mon… get fired up!”

His boyish enthusiasm caught her off guard.

Lucy laughed despite herself, shoulders loosening. “Thanks Natsu. You always know what to say!”

Still smiling, she lifted her hands, letting energy swirl in her palms.

The power built fast, hotter and heavier than she expected, and when she released it,

 “Potentia libera” BOOM.

The spell shot wide, ripping into the dirt several feet away from Natsu.

Dust and smoke plumed, leaving behind a crater big enough to fall into.

Lucy groaned, covering her face. “Oh no. Juvia is going to kill me.”

Natsu stared at the hole, eyes wide.

Then a slow grin stretched across his face. “Wow! You're super strong! You just need more concentration. Think of something you love, clear your mind, and aim at what you really want. Magic only listens to you if your mind’s steady.”

“I know,” Lucy sighed. “Jellal’s already told me that.”

“Well you don’t seem to be taking his advice…” Natsu scratched the back of his head. “I’ll be honest though, Erza kinda gave me a heads-up on what to say. I’ve never trained with a witch before.”

Lucy’s eyes flared. “You mean that wasn’t even your advice?!”

“Hey! Don’t yell at your trainer! Everyone needs help from others at one point. ” he shot back, laughing.

Taking a deep breath, Lucy steadied herself.

Focus. She thought of her mom, her new life and then Ignia.

This time when she raised her hands, the magic flowed sharper, “Lux astralis, percute hostem.”

The beam struck Natsu dead on, engulfing him in light.

Her heart stopped. “Natsu! Oh no—I killed him—”

But then his laugh echoed through the haze.

He stood completely fine, brushing soot from his jacket. “Relax, Luce. You can’t kill someone already dead. Only way to really end a demon like me is ripping out the heart.”

Lucy made a face. “That’s gross.”

“Eh, kinda the same thing for humans once your heart hurts down you die.” He winked. “But, now that you’ve got your spells down, I think it’s combat training time!”

“Combat? Wouldn’t it be smarter to start with, y’know, a woman first?”

“Funny you say that.” Natsu smirked. “I already invited one.”

Footsteps sounded, and Juvia appeared, her blue hair gleaming in the sun.

“Perfect timing,” she said, stretching her arms to embrace Juvia in a hug.

“Honestly, I need to train too. My parents are convinced Gray’s future bride is going to try to kill me.”

Lucy blinked. “Wait—what?”

Natsu shrugged. “Yeah, some vampire chick was supposed to court Gray.  She’s a total nutcase. She’s obsessed with Gray. Just realizing he followed her on FioreFun, she lost it. Juvia is definitely on her target list.”

Juvia’s eyes darkened. “It makes sense. Death is the only way to break the mate bond. Once she finds out, I have to be ready for anything.”

Lucy gasped, “That’s insane! I’m sure you’ll kick her ass Juvia! Plus Gray wouldn’t let that happen, right?”

Before Lucy could ask more, Juvia looked at Natsu with a challenging smile. “I don’t think he would. But I don’t need him to protect me. I’m strong enough. Listen Natsu, before I start with Lucy, I want to fight you.”

“Me?” Natsu’s grin widened, fire already flickering across his arms. “Alpha vs. King? Hell yeah. Let’s go.”

They faced off.

Natsu charged first, flames erupting as he swung but Juvia was faster, her movements fluid and weightless, almost as if she floated.

She twisted midair, dodging his strike, and landed a flawless roundhouse kick to his chest.

Natsu stumbled back, laughing. “Damn Juvia! You’re strong!”

They clashed again, sparks flying with every strike.

Each blows deflected, none landing.

Each time one gained an edge, the other countered.

Lucy could barely track the blur of movement, it was like watching two storms collide.

Then, suddenly, the air shifted.

“Enough.”

Gray appeared, his eyes radiating anger from him as he stepped forward.

Natsu noticed, stopping immediately.

“When did you get here? Juvia asked me to fight her! We’re both helping Lucy. ” Natsu asked, panting.

Gray’s gaze never left Juvia. “I felt her fighting. I thought it was Ultear. Forgive me, but I had to come.” His voice softened, but his mouth curved in the faintest smirk. “But to my surprise, it was just her kicking your ass.”

“Tch. I was holding back,” Natsu said.

Juvia’s lips curved. “So was I.” She turned to Lucy. “Ready to begin?”

Lucy sputtered. “You expect me to fight you after that?!”

Juvia laughed gently. “Don’t worry Lucy, we’ll  start with the basics. Relax.”

And to Lucy’s surprise, she did.

Juvia adjusted her stance, guiding her through the motions.

Lucy was a quick learner.

At one point, she even managed to land a light strike on Juvia, who blinked in genuine surprise.

“Well done,” Juvia praised warmly. “You’ll be a force to reckon with soon.”

Lucy flushed, smiling. “Thank you… I’d love to practice with you more.”

“We will, only the strong survive.” Juvia mentioned.

From the sidelines, Gray and Natsu  watched Lucy and Juvia, their energies were strong yet feminine.

“Would you have ever guessed we would be in wolf territory with their Alpha training a witch.,” Natsu murmured after a while.

Gray followed Lucy’s movements, then frowned slightly. “Never. I also can’t believe how fast of a learner Lucy is!”

Meanwhile, Natsu was fired up again. “Great job, Luce! Now let’s spar again! Try the spell and combat moves together!!”

She listened closely, syncing her magic to his movements, then released her best spell yet,

Impulsum emitte

The spell caught him mid-charge, slamming him straight into the ground.

Lucy gasped. “Natsu! I’m so sorry—”

But he popped back up, grinning. “Atta girl! Great job, Lucy!”

Her laughter bubbled out, relief and pride mixing.

Later, as the sun dipped lower, Lucy thanked both of them. “I learned so much today. Juvia, I haven’t been able to find a spell that can be helpful yet, but tonight, I’ll call my mom to see if she knows one!”

“Good idea,” Natsu said, stretching. “But you guys should also talk to my sister, Wendy. She’s scary smart about magic. She could be a big help!”

Juvia’s eyes lit. “Bring her next time!”

“Only if Gray comes from the start,” Natsu teased.

That earned him a glare, but Juvia admitted softly, “I’d have to tell my family.  But I’m sure it can be arranged. Gray, I do enjoy being around you. But, as the leader of my pack, my safety is top priority. My parents will likely ensure I am protected by sending Gajeel.”

Gray groaned. “Anyone but Gajeel.”

Natsu laughed. “If Gajeel didn’t hate you before, he definitely does now.”

Right on cue, a deep voice cut in. “I heard that.”

Gajeel strode into the field, his presence heavy. “As much as I hate Fullbuster, I have orders. This freak might be  her mate, but she’s my cousin and I’ll always protect her.”

Juvia teased, “You do know I’m stronger than you now.”

He didn’t deny it, just smirked. “Doesn’t mean I won’t protect you.”

Gray chuckled unexpectedly, earning himself a deadly glare from Gajeel.

Lucy couldn’t stop laughing at the chaotic group. “Today was so amazing.”

For the first time in a while, she felt like she belonged.

“Want me to walk you back?” Natsu asked.

Lucy’s smile softened. She hesitated for a second before answering, gripping the strap of her bag. “That’s really sweet, Natsu… but you don’t need to. Ignia’s waiting for me outside.”

Natsu froze for half a beat.

He swallowed, his throat suddenly dry, and forced a crooked grin. “Right… of course. Don’t wanna keep him waiting.”

He tried to play it off like it didn’t matter, but the flicker of disappointment in his eyes betrayed him.

Lucy opened her mouth, as if she wanted to say more, but, she couldn’t. Ignia was her boyfriend after all. Natsu was his brother.

Lucy waved quickly to Natsu before hurrying over, her expression brightening again as Ignia reached out and their hand interlocked.

As the day faded to darkness, Lucy’s sleep was restless.

Shadows twisted across her dreams, and she found herself running through a dark, wind-whipped forest.

Panic gripped her chest as she stumbled over roots and rocks, her heart hammering.

“Ignia… please stop!” she begged, her voice trembling in the void. But he didn’t hear.

Her vision shifted, and in an instant, she saw Natsu and his fire dimmed, body limp and Ignia’s hands wrapped around his chest.

Horror stole her breath.

Tears streamed down her face.

“Please… stop!” she screamed, but the nightmare pressed on, unrelenting.

The world around her pulsed with terror, and the warmth of Natsu’s usual fire was gone, as blood splattered everyone.

Lucy jolted awake, her body drenched in sweat, heart racing.

For a long moment, she laid in disbelief, staring at the ceiling.

She didn’t know if it had been a deep fear of hers manifesting, or a glimpse of some future to come.

All she could grasp was one truth: she needed to get stronger.

The next morning, she arrived at the table earlier than normal. She wrapped her arms around Juvia first, then Erza, her voice soft but full of gratitude.

“Thank you both… for everything.”

“Don’t mention it,” Juvia said with a smile. She leaned closer, her eyes sparkling with a rare warmth. “This weekend, I invited Erza for training. She’s the reason I’m as strong as I am. Fighting her… it’s a whole different level. She goes easy on no one.”

Lucy hesitated for a moment, then asked, “Do you think I’m ready for that?”

Juvia’s expression softened. “In battle, it won’t matter if you’re ready or not. What matters is whether you can improve significantly during the fight.”

Lucy nodded,  “Then I’ll be ready! I’m also excited to meet Wendy. I think I’ve got an idea for a base spell to try, my mom didn’t answer last night so I’ll try her again today.”

Juvia smiled, “Same! I can’t thank you enough Lucy. I’m happy to help you in any way I can!”

Suddenly, Gajeel appeared beside Juvia, voice low and urgent. “Incoming.”

Lucy and Juvia glanced around, but no one was in sight. Confusion flickered across Lucy’s face—until Ultear stepped into view.

Ultear was stopped cold by Gajeel, who growled, “Stay back.”

Ultear’s eyes glinted with disdain. “Wow, princess. Twenty-four-seven security… shows me how weak you really are.”

Gajeel opened his mouth to shout, but Juvia placed a calm hand on his chest. “She’s unimportant,” Juvia said, eyes cold. “Unlike me, she could never understand what it means to be valued. She is a second choice. That is why she wishes to touch me.”

Ultear’s face twisted with anger. “Mongrel,” she spat.

Juvia laughed, sharp and controlled. “Yet I am the only living being with the power to kill you. I could have you groveling at my feet, begging for your life, but I choose to take the high road. Making me a target is not wise. It will only result in your inevitable death.”

Ultear’s laugh was bitter. “Your words are empty threats. You don’t even lift a finger. But know this… I’m coming for you. The second you’re alone, I’ll tear you apart.”

Before she could continue, Gray appeared, movement silent and deadly. With one swift motion, he snapped her neck, sending her into a slumber. His voice was low, tense. “Lyon, bring her home.”

Lyon appeared, nodded before vamping her away.

He turned to Juvia, bowing his head in apology. “I’m sorry I put you in danger.” He muttered under his breath, cursing himself for allowing it to happen.

He stared into her eyes, a little too long. Gray was full of hunger. Seeing Juvia be so assertive, it was sexy.

It made her smell even more delightful. He needed to get himself in control before he lost himself. She was insatiable.

Back at the table, the girls erupted in praise for Juvia. “You’re so badass,” Lucy gushed, her eyes wide.

Erza nodded. “Juvia, you may need to join in on training again this week after that threat.”

Juvia chuckled. “Agreed. And we should get Cana and Levy involved too, so we can all hang out.”

Levy shook her head with a small smile. “I’m not one for violence, so I’ll pass.”

Cana raised a brow, grinning. “I’d rather drink, but I love you guys. I’ve seen enough to know we’ll all get stronger.”

Lucy tilted her head. “What do you mean by that?”

Cana leaned back, glass in hand, voice soft. “I’m an Oracle. I see the future, but it shifts as people make their choices. I could see something happen… and by tomorrow, it could change. Drinking helps me not see too much at once”, she chuckled, “it’s overwhelming to witness so many possibilities.”

Lucy let out a soft laugh, shaking her head in disbelief at the extraordinary lives around her, but also feeling more inspired than ever to keep improving.
