Chapter 1: :3?

Chapter Text

Honestly. The day was inevitably coming. Rui sat in the cold, damp alley, wondering what hes done this time such that his parents kicked him out for the night again.

The samurai clan in power was looking more evil everyday, picking off specific targets to kill. He didn't know who lead them, no one did, but Rui doesn't think he wants to know. Maybe theyll pick him off soon. Maybe his misery will end. Not like his shitty parents would care, with how much they force him out. He decided to stay out, having some money he knew would run out eventually. He had his job but he knew with the state he was in hed get fired soon. Whatever, he thought as he eyed a passing cat, oreo and eyeing him back before running off.

A month. When he tried returning home he found his belongings on the doorstep. All he did that day was cry in an alley. Since then, that oreo cat stuck to him, leading him places he learned to follow. Not like he had much to lose. He had his termination notice, the shelter wasn't helping, and he didn't exactly know anyone.

That was, until the day he ranted off to the cat that tomorrow he was gonna climb a building and- Well. he was half serious. He woke up the next day without the oreo near his head like always, and when he just went back to sleep, he woke up to the familiar meow of his cat, with a figure now standing over him.

Sharp sunset eyes, and a frown unlike any other, emitting dissatisfaction and disapointment. The man had his arms crossed and he was sure he was going to die today, because he knew from his clothes alone that he was part of the gang.

"What's your name?" The man spit out.

He had nothing to lose, may as well tell his murderer what to put on his grave. "Kamishiro Rui."

"Have you been the one taking care of my cat?"

"More like looking after him."

The man hummed, before extending his hand. "Get up," he extended a hand, "Come with me."

"Oh? You aren't going to murder me?"

The man sighed, as if it was a long explanation. "No."

His name was Tenma Tsukasa. As they walked, Tenma eyed him up and down.

"What do you have to lose?"

"Nothing." Rui answered curtly.

"No family? Friends?"

"None. Only child, my parents don't hate me but they wouldnt hate it if I was gone. I have one childhood friend that went missing, so no. Nothing to lose."

Tenma hummed. "You'll be my servant then. At my side at all times. Loyal to me."

"Is that allowed?" Rui asked curiously as they entered the compound, the guards automatically opening for Tenma when a few minutes before, Rui had seen them question who was clearly another member before letting them in.

"Of course. I'm the leader!"

Rui was shocked. "But youre-"

"20, just like you. I'm aware. My father passed it down secret to me when I turned 18, the clans been running beautifully since."

They passed by younger samurai training or sparring on their way to the main mansion. they passed by the kitchen where the smell of delicious food wafted through the nearby halls. They passed the second floor, full of rooms half of which were obviously not used. And finally up to the third floor where the higher up rooms were located. Yes, Rui had peeked through to the second floor rooms, they contained a sizable bed, wardrobe, desk, and its own bathroom. But the rooms on the theird floor were obviously bigger for those in higher power. Tenma led him down that hall, and gestured to a room.

"Get washed up, and changed. There are different uniforms to choose from. I'll be downstairs in the kitchen, come meet me there when you are finished." He smiled.

When Rui thanked him after asking if he was serious, he took his time, making himself look as presentable as possible with his long hair. it was put into a low ponytail, the bangs swept to the side. He chose a nice black uniform with a blue black jacket he hung around his shoulders. When he entered the kitchen about an hour later, Tenma was sitting with a smile, offering the seat next to his at the head to eat.

As they ate, the cat, now identified as Tenma's, climbed up and slept on the table a few bits away.

"Her names Miku." supplied Tenma.

"After... our goddess?"

"Yes. She helps me like our goddess wouldve wanted. I knew I had to make you a higher up as soon as I saw you, with how she's taken a liking to you."

"How so?"

"Miku goes out finding people in need of my help. She sticks around a day or two, coming during nights for meals. She'll usually refuse what they offer her, since she knows they need it more than she does. Though, when she dissappeared for almost a month... without even barely coming for meals... I was going to go out searching for her."

"What if she had been..."

"Killed? No. I trust our Goddness Miku wouldn't hurt a cat named after her. Though before I could go searching, she appeared and had me follow her like usual, but she was more in a hurry, more insistent than usual. I knew youd be someone important just from her."

Rui looked towards the purring cat with a bit of awe. "Well then. Thank you very much, Miku. I'm lucky you found me."

"She was going to find you sooner or later."

"But... you guys... this clan, I haven't heard very good things..."

"You'll understand why we do what we do while we do it. Do you trust me, Kamishiro?"

"Wholeheartedly, Tenma-kun."

"Then you're in the right place. Forget about your past, you have us here at the clan now." He smiled warmly, extending a hand to Rui's damp hair. "We'll need to get that cut, long hair for any samurai is a risk."

"Noted. Thank you so much for letting me stay temporarily."

"You have no where to go, Kamishiro Rui. Who said it was temporary?" Tenma smirked as he cleaned up his plate.

"But what if I cross you?"

"Will you?" He got up from the table with a smirk.

"No. You know my face and name." Rui muttered. "N-not that I was considering it!"

"Then you stay here permanently." He walked away towards the inside kitchens with power in his step. Rui could only look between his food and Miku, who stared back lazily.

Chapter Text

Another month has passed. Throughout it, Rui trained. The basics, but he worked. he got himself to lift weights, train in stealth, flips, and katana weilding. Today, as he took a break in his room, his javket discarded as it was getting warmer, a knock resounded.

"Come in."

The door opened. "Rui," Tsukasa smiled bright at him. "Come with me, today we will spar."

"Oh, will I be against someone of my skill level?" He buzzed in excitement. Tsukasa chuckled. "As my future second hand, I cannot. You will spar with me."

Spar with- "But-"

"You will fail." He said with a smile, as they walked through the courtyard, smaller ranks sparring too. "Though time and time again with failure comes a lesson of improvement. My word of advice before we start, chase potential, not perfection."

Rui stayed silent, anxious nerves settling in- his first real training, and its against the strongest. His hand shook as he reached for the sparring katana, turning around and holding it in the starting position.

Not 30 seconds in, he was on the ground, katana to the side.

"Fail!" Tsukasa announced. "Get up, again."

I'll be hearing those words a lot, wont I.

Again and again, Rui ended the match on the ground, or his katana away from him. The murmurs of other students rang loud in his ears, humiliation and embarrassment evident on his face. He could only look up at a smirking Tsukasa, who held his hand out for him. "Last one, then we break for lunch."

He got up once more. In his now perfected starting position, he stared at his boss. When he lunged, Rui deflected to the side, where-

An opening...! Tsukasa had his side open to him. In that split second, he swung for it. Only to get blocked by Tsulasas katana. He looked at his face, only to see a satisfied smirk.

"Well done. I was hoping you'd catch the opening." Rui lit up at his words. They got up together and put their katanas away. "I'm in charge of your training from now. Come, lets eat." Tsukasa took his hand and pulled him inside. He has a warm hand...

"So I presume we'll be training again?" Rui inquired.

"No. We'll be going to the market. I asked the chefs for a list of things they needed to restock, we will be getting what we can today."

"Ah... interesting," Rui smiled as they sat at the table. Right when Rui went to speak, a new figure emerged from a door, leaving Rui speechless. "Nene..?!"

--

"... and that is how I got here." She said. "I don't miss my parents, I'm greatful Tsukasa's father had them killed. They, as yours are, werent the best." Tsukasa had a sad smile on his face.

They ate in silence, Rui catching up with Nene when she came to serve them, eventually sitting and eating at Tsukasa's request.

"My girlfriend Emu likes being a samurai. I also like it, but its calmer working behind the scenes, so I found myself fitting here as sous-chef the most, with my friend, the head cook, Akito-kun and a cook, Len-kun."

"I'm glad you've found something that makes you happy."

"Yeah, Akito and his friend Shiraishi, I think a trainer, lets me sing, even puahes me to pursue singing, but maybe not now..." She said quietly.

"Go for what your heart desires, Nene." Tsukasa said softly, placing a comforting hand face up for her take.

"My heart tells me to stay here, where it's safe, for just a bit longer." Tsukasa nodded with a smile, finishing his soup. When Rui finished not long after, they placed their bowls at the counter to the inside kitchen bowing to Akito behind who was cleaning up, who then smirked and took the bowls with a sense of pride.

As they left Nene, who went back inside the kitchen to finish her soup, "Akito does take pride in making sure others get a good diet. I trust him fully."

30 minutes later, the two were heading out, and Tsukasa had taken his arm once more to hold. "Come along now, Rui, we don't want to miss the good produce." He only chuckled in response.

They scanned the stand of fruit, picking up strawberries and blueberries per Akito's request. The people around them were wary, but not afraid. It was only when Rui picked up a mango to inspect that he heard it.

"Rui! I see youve made a life for youself!" Said boy froze. It was the voice of his mother. "We knew having you be independent would make you stronger darling, why don't you come over for dinner sometime?" His father trailed behind, eyeing his son up and down.

"I-" He faltered.

"Rui! Have you chosen mangoes yet? I'm done with the bananas. Oh? Who are you guys?" Tsukasa greeted cheerfully.

"Rui's parents of course! Are you the one taking care of him?" Tsukasa took one look between the panicked Rui, and the parents. He remmebered the day he met him. Ragged, no light in his eyes. Then a few minutes ago. Bright, smiling, warm. Before he could say anything, Rui's father noticed their matching clothes and brooches of the clan symbol.

"You- You joined the samurai?! The one who kill?" Tsukasa's face fell. Rui couldn't look up as he put the mango away in a bag and continued looking.

"I don't know who you are. Leave us alone." Tsukasa almost shuddered from the venom. They clearly had something to do with his state that night, and Tsukasa did not like that thought.

"If you'll excuse us, please stop bothering us, we have errands to run." Tsukasa continued for Rui.

His father scoffed. "Keep being the errandboy, maybe you'll finally be something for that shitty leader."

Tsukasa replied without missing a beat. "He takes him in high regard and respect, and wouldn't just ask anyone to do things he can do himself. Leave us alone before you instigate a fight you'll regret." Rui could only stay silent, silently defeated, silently on the verge of tears. He didn't want to go back there.

As soon as they had left the stall, Tsukasa had started sticking to him. Obviously not overbearing, but almost wanting to ask. With little words, they brought back the groceries and Rui excuses himself to his room. Not 10 minutes later, a knock went through his door.

"Rui. Let me in." Not like he could refuse his boss. A moment later, he was kneeled next to the lying form. "Rui. You've been off since..." Tenma looked away before looking back at him. "...Anyways. Can you tell me what that was? Who they were?"

For the month that he was here, that he had met Nene, Akito, Luka, Emu, even Mizuki, he had refrained from speaking of his past. It was accepted, as most were in the same boat as he did. Luka tried the most, but gave up and asked him to come to her on his own terms, so that she could help him. Tsukasa now wanted to know, and the look on his face told Rui he would tell. At least he trusted he wouldn't. "They were my parents, of course they were my parents. I... They..." His voice broke. "It's..."

A hand placed itself on his, as Tenma moved to sit on the edge of his bed. "Breathe." He smiled ever so softly. Rui turned to lie on his back. "They left my things on the porch. Told me to return when I was successful, more inde-" He gasped for air between his sobs. Tenma only sat closer and places his hand on his cheek, wiping stray tears. His other hand held his hand. "Independent. They never once checked on me during the month I was on the street." Rui turned to Tsukasa's direction, curling up. "They didn't care when I was on the verge of death..." Tsukasas hold only tightened. He pushed himself down, turning himself and rui on top of him.

"I don't do this often. Only to those close to me. Cry into my shoulder for as long as you need. then we're going to Luka's."
