Darkness.
It’s the first thing I remember.
…
It was cold..
It was dark..
..And I was scared.
…
Then, I saw the Moon.
It was so big, and it was so bright, it seemed to just chase the darkness away. When it did, I didn’t feel scared anymore.
…
Feeling the moonbeams upon my face, I started to relax, they were peaceful, pleasant, friendly.
“Jack Frost”
It was almost like a whisper, but yet not. I could hear it in my head, feel the warmth of the moonbeams dancing around me as I stared up at the full moon.
As I was smiling, I felt myself stumbling forward, slipping on what I quickly realized was ice below my feet. Flailing around for a moment, I was able to regain my balance and slowly started making my way toward what appeared to be the edge of a lake and the outlining of a forest. The moonbeams continued to light my way until I reached the end of the ice, then a cloud started to block them out.
Staring up in dismay, unsure what to do now, I waited. Waited for a sign, another moonbeam, something.
So I sat.
And I waited.
Yet.. nothing..
Then the wind came.
The wind seemed to scoop me into the air, almost as if I were a leaf. Yelping, I flailed around again, trying and failing to grasp for something, until I realized.
This was my sign.
So I enjoyed it.
Yelling and whooping, the wind dove me through the air. We twisted and turned until the clouds above grew darker and snow started to fall. I felt myself being softly placed down back by the lake, only to stumble upon a piece of wood.
As I stared at it, it seemed to call to me. So I bent down to pick it up, only for something to happen as I did. Frost appeared where I touched the wood and I dropped it immediately, startled. Staring for a moment, I picked it back up and watched as it continued to spread. Giggingly as it spread more and more every time I tapped the stick upon the frozen lake.
It was like magic!
So I started running. Dragging the stick around and dancing with it. Getting more and more excited every time more designs were created. As I did so, the wind continued to pick up and the snow fell faster.
As I spun on the ice the wind picked me up again, this time I leaned into it, allowing for it to take me wherever it wished. Trusting the breeze completely as we followed the snowfall.
It was a wonderful feeling, creating these beautiful designs and dancing with the wind. Almost as though they were their own being, had a subconscious of their own. We twisted and turned, spun and dove, created frost and snowflakes. It was magical and mesmerizing.
As the sun slowly appeared higher in the sky it started to feel like someone was watching me. Trying to sense where the presence was coming from, I moved along to the edge of the lake. Looking around I wasn’t able to find where the feeling was coming from until I saw a shadow move.
There!
A man, cloaked within the shadows, stood beyond the woods edge. Just across the pond and outside the moon light.
My eyes met theirs, golden, they seemed to glow. The figure didn’t move, just continued to observe me as I did the same in return.
Slowly, I made my way across the ice, unsure of their presence within the shadows.
The man did not move closer nor further, so I continued until I was at the edge of the lake.
“H-hello?” My stuttered greeting seemed to only cause their eyes to glow more intensely somehow.
The shadowed man finally moved towards me after a moment, with a glance towards the moon, then back at me. His whole figure was cloaked in moving darkness and it was so very intriguing.
“And who might you be, frost child?”
His voice! How could a voice be so smooth? It was nearly entrancing.
Realizing the man had asked a question, I attempted to answer as I felt my face frost up in embarrassment, “The moon told me my name was Jack, Jack Frost.” He stared at me as I glanced at the moon, trying to figure out if that was correct. Shrugging at the puzzled look on his face, I continued, “I, uh, just popped up out of there,” I pointed to the lake, “and then he,” pointed up at the full moon,” told me my name. So yeah, its uh, Jack I think.”
There was suddenly a hand on my cheek as the man forced me to look at him. “That’s all he has said to you? All the information he provided to you?”
I blinked a few times before nodding.
The man's face turned angry as he turned to the moon with a glare before breathing deeply and turning back to me.
“My name is Pitch Black. If you would like, I may be able to help you adjust to your new situation.”
My eyes widened at his words. “R-really?” My voice probably came out a little squeaker than I would have liked, but I was too shocked to care.
Pitch chuckled, “Yes, really. I do believe you have far too much potential young frostling. Plus, I know what it feels like for The Man In The Moon to abandon you, I would not wish that on another.” A look of utter sadness watched over his face at those words that I could not explain. “So what do you say? Would you like to come with me, Frost?”
He extended his hand to me, allowing me to form a choice. As it lay there in front of me, the moon's glow seemed to brighten, trying to defer me from Pitch’s offer, yet the look in those golden eyes and the warmth that his hand on my cheek had offered seemed to sway me.
“I’m in.”
His smile lets me know I made a good choice, but it's his hug that lets me know that I made the right choice. That Pitch would protect me from whatever it was The Man In The Moon was going to abandon me to. I was going to be alright, and it was all thanks to him.
…
Somehow, Pitch Black, The Boogeyman himself, became my protector, and I was and still am completely fine with that. Even after 300 years, countless snowball fights, pranks and accidental blizzards. Frozen nightmares and frosted off eyebrows can’t get rid of him. He found me when I needed him and I will never let him go.
