SEPTEMBER 1965 - MAY 1966
PRIMARY SCHOOL.

It was an exceptionally cold autumnal morning, and James Fleamont Potter was crying. It was his first day of primary school and his mother was kneeling in front of him at the gates of Godric Hollow’s Primary school, comforting her son as he cried into her arms. He was a tiny boy of five, with dark hair and deep brown eyes. Euphemia Potter swiped a warm hand across his face, wiping his tears from his bright pink cheeks. “Now love, remember what I said? You’re going to have a great time, and you’re going to make some great friends here, I am absolutely sure of it! You’ve got to give it a good go Jamie, and all you need to do is just be yourself.” to James, she was so warm and comforting, and James stopped crying almost immediately, scrubbing a tiny fist across his tear-stained cheeks.

She stood up and took his small hand in hers and squeezed. “You’re going to have a great time. Let’s go. Remember, it won’t be long at all until I’m back.” He nodded and they both made their way through the crowds of parents who were also comforting smaller children, or those who were wishing older kids goodbye. Euphemia’s patent heels clicked rhythmically against the paved entrance, where they met a kind looking older lady who was wearing an incredibly ugly, fluffy, blue angora jumper. She gave James and his mother a welcoming smile before explaining how the school worked as they walked down the corridor.

She led them through the large navy doors at the entrance, and slowed to suggest that James should go into class alone. Euphemia bent down to kiss James on the top of his head of dark curls, said goodbye and left quickly. The nice lady took James to a brightly coloured classroom filled with other students in polo shirts and grey jumpers. “I’m Mrs Smith, dear, and this is your class for the year.” the older lady said, ushering him into a small plastic seat before hurrying back out the classroom door to greet other students. Another younger lady sat at the front of the room, keeping a watchful eye over the kids.

The classroom had large windows with patterned curtains tied at the sides, posters and drawings were scattered over the walls, huge tubs of toys and craft supplies lined the walls, and a huge blackboard sat front and centre, with a scene of a garden drawn out in different colours of chalk, with a yellow smiling sun in the corner.

James looked around, waiting for something to happen. He saw some of the other kids had cheeks stained with tears, like his, but there was a dark haired one sitting in the corner who looked pale and stoic, surprisingly serious for such a small kid. James thought he looked… odd. Being as curious as he was, he decided to get up and toddle over to the boy in the corner. “Hello. I’m James” he stated simply, smiling, waiting for a response. The other boy appeared to light up immediately, beaming at James like it was Christmas morning.

“Hi! I’m Sirius, I like dinosaurs!” The boy looked ecstatic, bright eyes shining while he tapped his tiny fingers against the blue plastic of his chair. “Sit next to me?” he said. James grinned and nodded before plonking himself down in the yellow chair beside Sirius, and they both began talking about their favorite kinds of dinosaurs.

From that moment on, the two boys were practically inseparable, doing the kiddy arts and crafts together, sitting together at lunch babbling at each other over their ham sandwiches, and running around the playground together at break playing races and make-believe.

It didn’t take long for James to notice another boy who was sitting alone on a bench at lunch. He had a pudgy face that still had tears drying on it, and had sandy hair that was sticking to the sides of his face. The pair went up to him, and James offered him a hand, which the other boy took. He said his name was Peter, but both Sirius and James immediately took to calling him ‘Petey’. The three of them became fast friends, and James went home with a bright grin on his face.

James presented a pasta bracelet he made for Euphemia during class, with no glitter glue or brightly coloured paint spared during the creation process. “I met two friends today mummy! One with black hair who likes dinosaurs like me! He was called Siwius! And- and the other likes trains and has blond hair! His name is Petey!" James was bubbling with happiness, and his mother bent down to pick him up before twirling him through the air, then pulled him close, basking in her son's joy.

James spent the rest of the night talking to his mother and father about how great his new friends were and how happy he was that he was going to spend the entire rest of the school year with them. Even at bedtime, after his mother had tucked him in, he dreamed about playing with them.

From then on, time flew by. Days of school turned into weekends of playdates, which moved into months of friendship. Christmas of that year came and went, with James getting a tiny red bike, which he excitedly showed to Sirius and Peter. Peter showed the pair his new toy train set at a playdate at his house, which still had fairy lights spelled to float about the house, even in January. Sirius appeared to get nothing from his parents, but the other boys didn’t question it. However, both Peter and James were quite confused as to why they couldn’t ever go to Sirius’s house, or why they only ever saw an old lady picking Sirius up from school. Anytime James asked his mum about this, she just said that Sirius’s parents weren’t very kind to him, and from that moment, James promised to make sure that everyone else was kind to Sirius, always.

MAY 1970
THE POTTERS'

The boys were taking a rather unnecessary break from their year 6 homework to build lego. .A marshmallow pelted Sirius in the side of the head with a light ‘thunk’. Peter, at ten years old, found this ridiculously funny, and giggled until his face was a harsh red. James joined in, wiping icing sugar off his hands onto his jumper, while Sirius fumed at the other side of the Potter’s kitchen table. “GASP! How dare you pelt me with sugary delicacies like some sort of heathen!” Sirius said in a high voice, pulling more laughter from both James and Peter.

“It had to be done.” James said through another stifled laugh. “I can’t physically bear you going on about Isobel for one more minute, you’ll actually make me ill!” Peter had resumed munching on the snacks on the centre of the table while Sirius was trying to balance their precariously leaning lego tower.

Sirius grinned, chucking another sweet at James, which missed and skidded across the floor. “No girl can resist my overwhelming charm, Potter. I could teach you how to impress girls you know, all you have to do is ask” Sirius gave an over-exaggerated wink to James, who only smiled harder.

“ Oh really, like that time you had to hand in your paper, and on the way up to the teacher’s desk you tripped on Isobel’s desk right after winking at her then?” Peter added, face sticky from the sugar.

Sirius sighed and shook his head. “Can you blame me, even the masters of their crafts make mistakes. And I am definitely a master at the craft of impressing girls, thank you very much!” Peter and James roared with laughter, and the already weak tower crumbled onto the shaking table. James laid his head on the table, trying to catch his breath, while Peter leant back in his chair attempting to do the same.

They all stayed quiet for some time, a calmness began to wash over the hyper boys.

“I can’t believe it’s next year that we’re going to Hogwarts. I am so excited to get away from… here.” Sirius broke through the quiet to state what they were all thinking about. It was only a matter of months until they would all be packing their suitcases and getting on the train to Hogwarts. The three friends were absolutely ecstatic about going to the place that they were told about for all of their childhood.

James blew out a breath, and began to ramble about how great is was going to be, and how all of the magic they were going to be able to do by the end of the year would be so impressive.

Peter was still quiet, meekly sitting with his head in his hands, before muttering “Do you think they’ll even let me in?” Peter had always been seen as the weakest of the three by most outsiders, Sirius and James were both incredibly charming, with outstanding grades and tons of achievements between the two of them. Peter had only gotten one sign that he was magic so far, although he tried to appear unbothered by it to the others, he was sulking more often than usual.

“Don’t even think about that Petey, of course they’ll let you in!” James spoke with his most encouraging tone, smiling brightly at Peter. “If, by some impossible chance, they don’t let you in, then me and Sirius will start an absolute riot.” Sirius patted Peter on the shoulder encouragingly, and this seemed to satiate Peter.

Silence took it’s place among them again, as they all began daydreaming about their futures at Hogwarts. “What house do you think we’ll all be put in?” Sirius asked, repetitively throwing and catching a dusty marshmallow he found sitting on the floor. His expression was thoughtful, but James could see the fragment of fear left behind his eyes.

“Oh we’re all definitely going to be in Gryffindor together. No way we aren’t, me and Peter’s family have been in Gryffindor for decades!” James quickly added “And of course you’ll be put with us Sirius, no doubt about it” Sirius grinned at him, before tossing the marshmallow at James, which hit him square in the chest.

“Hey! What was that for?” James cried.

Sirius smirked, “Revenge for earlier, idiot.”

The two began squabbling back and forth, only broken by Peter swinging too far on his chair and falling backwards onto the floor. James and Sirius looked at him in stunned silence, before Peter raised his hand in a thumbs up.

It was at this moment that James’s mum came into the kitchen with a basket of washing at her hip. “Oh hi boys! James didn’t tell me you two were coming round today. Do you boys want anything?” she commented, putting the washing on the table.

“You think we’re all going to get into Gryffindor right?” James asked his mother.

She smiled down at the three young faces sweetly staring up at her. “Of course, dear. You’re all so strong, and you’re going to grow up to all be great wizards too.” She reached over to ruffle James’s hair before leaving through the back door to hang up the washing in the warm spring sun.

The pile of brightly coloured legos was long forgotten for the excitement of Hogwarts. “See Petey, you’ve got nothing to worry about, my mum is always right. You too Sirius, I know for a fact there won’t be any separating us.” Sirius gave him a small smile, and at this the three boys fell back into a comfortable rhythm of chatting and arguing about various menial things, and before they knew it the sun was setting, and the Potter’s house elf, Sophie, was starting to cook a late dinner for the family.

James walked the other two to the door, waving them goodbye as Peter hopped on his bike, and Sirius began to trudge back to his house.

He shut the door, and padded back into the kitchen to sit on the wooden chair beside his mother. “Have a good time, honey?” His mum looked up from her rolls of parchment, waiting for a reply.

“Yeah mum it was great… You know earlier, when you said we’re all going to get into Gryffindor?” His mum nodded, and he sheepishly looked up at her. “I’m worried Sirius won’t.” He almost whispered. His mum had told him about Sirius’s family before, about how they weren’t very good people, especially to Sirius. She leant over to give him a quick hug, before pulling back and squeezing his hand.

“Honey, fate has a funny way of making things happen. I think you and Sirius are going to be together for a long time. You know he’s strong and brave, and incredibly good, but it’s important that you’ll be there for him no matter what house he gets into, okay?” James nodded enthusiastically at this, eager to protect his best friend.

After James’s dad arrived home from the ministry, the three ate dinner, and after, Fleamont Potter once again recounted his times at Hogwarts for his son who was listening eagerly from the other side of the sofa. Fleamont was just talking about a particularly fun jaunt about the castle when he sat up straight all of a sudden, seemingly remembering something.

“Wait there!” He called on his way out of the room, heavily walking up the stairs. James stared at his mother for answers, but she only gave him a knowing smile.

“You’re going to love this James!” Fleamont hurried back into the room, with a brown, rather decrepit box in his arms.

He handed the box to James, and sat beside him, waiting expectantly for him to open it up. James was quite reluctant, wondering about what could possibly be so important in such an ugly box. He lifted the musty cardboard lid, and what was inside was a fabric only describable as looking like it was made from liquid silver. He was curious now, and lifted the swirling fabric out of the box. It appeared to be a rather large cloak, big enough to fit at least two people in.

“Try it on, Jamie” His father still looked terribly excited, and he couldn’t help but feel a little bit confused, like he was given the wrong parcel. He lifted it up anyway, draping it around his shoulders. He even put up the hood to give the full effect, and stood up to give a spin to his parents. He let out a yelp, as he looked into the mirror about the fireplace, and saw… nothing? There was no reflection looking at him.

His parents both looked in his general vicinity, smiling still. “It’s an invisibility cloak. It was my faithful friend for going around the castle late at night without being caught. Now, I expect you to use it wisely and not get up to anything nefarious, but I hope you like it.”
James pulled the cloak off before giving his dad a hug. “Thank you so much, this is so super cool, Sirius and Peter are going to be SO jealous!”

2: SEPTEMBER 1ST 1971 The Hogwarts Express.

“James! Come on honey, we don’t want to be late!” Mrs Potter called to James, who was still standing beside the boot of the car, fighting with his overpacked leather suitcase. After some more struggling, he finally tugged it out of the car and onto a trolley, before scurrying over to his parents. The three hurried into King’s cross, which was bustling with businessmen and other people trying to get about their day.

They walked through the train station, and James peered at the other people, trying to figure out who was going to Hogwarts as they marched past the numbered platforms, brushing past herds of people. They arrive between platforms nine and ten with James’s various bags, and James’s parents pushed through the crowd and through the brick wall, appearing to vanish as James trailed after them.

The platform was full of people who were evidently witches and wizards, all dressed in robes and hats, but there were also small groups of muggles with their children. James’s father sighed, smiling as he looked around himself. “I missed the excitement of this place. I can’t believe it has been so long since we were at Hogwarts, Effie.” James’s mother smiled warmly back at him, before stopping to kiss James on the cheek.

“Remember, you’re going to have a great time.” She bent down again to give James a hug, squeezing him tightly. His father gave him a reassuring pat on the shoulder.

They said their goodbyes and pointed James in the direction of Peter, who was standing with his mother and looking rather unsure. James hurried over to him, bubbling with energy from both the nerves and the excitement of it all.

Peter instantly brightened when he saw James making his way through the crowd, grimace fading into a smile. “All right Petey?” James called as he dropped his luggage at his feet. Peter nodded, but was now saying his goodbyes to his mum while James rocked back and forth on his feet, scouring the crowd for the missing member of their trio.

“I think my mum packed half the bloody house. I wouldn’t be surprised if I open these to find the cat folded between my school uniforms.”James sighed, gesturing to his bags. Peter giggled at this, seeming to further relax, the laughter soothing his nerves.

“I dunno about you, but I think I’ve forgotten at least half my things. My mum made me pack by myself, I really hope she doesn’t send a howler if she has to send over anything I forgot.” Peter glanced uncertainly at his small suitcase, which paled in comparison to James’s pile of luggage that had his new barn owl teetering on the top of the stack.

They were interrupted by the whistling of the Hogwarts express lazily rolling up to the platform, in all of its fiery red glamour, steam pouring out of the blastpipe in misty swirls.. The crowd seemed to get louder, as families hurriedly said their last goodbyes and children began lugging their belongings onto the train once the shiny doors had sprung open.

It was ten fifty according to James’s watch, so both of the boys hauled their bags onto the train in pursuit of an empty compartment. They trailed down the aisle, peering into the overflowing compartments lining the sides of the train, filled with students of all ages, some in robes and others in muggle clothes. James bumped headfirst into a girl with bright red hair, who looked rather lost. Flashing a grin, he continued onward.

Eventually, they had gotten far enough that there was a compartment with only one small, slightly scrappy boy holed up in the corner. They looked at each other before James slid the door open and cleared his throat to get the boy’s attention, which was fixed on the emptying platform. “Alright if we sit here?” James chirped, which received a brief nod from the boy, who almost immediately went back to staring out the window, with his legs now protectively in front of a moth-eaten fabric suitcase.

James and Peter shoved their bags onto the rails above the seats, before sinking down on the other side, opposing the other boy. Seeing that they were going to be stuck together for some time, James thought it would be best to at least attempt to talk to the boy, despite how close off he seemed. He smiled brightly at the other boy, but he was preoccupied with the view of the platform. He decided on a different approach. “So what’s your name then?” James asked. The boy seemed startled, but was quick to compose himself with a questioning look.

“Remus.” He blurted out shortly, clearly not expecting the interaction.

“Cool name, mate. I’m James, and this is Peter.” James said, gesturing to Peter who was staring at Remus like he had just arrived from mars. Remus did have a rather large amount of scars criss-crossing his face, but James thought it was rude of Peter to stare, who seemed totally entranced by his appearance. James gave him a sharp shove with his elbow, jolting the other boy into a response

“Oh yeah, nice to meet you Remus.” Peter added quickly, avoiding eye contact.

Remus looked less than pleased, but nodded at them regardless, and then promptly went back to wordlessly staring out onto the platform.

James was becoming increasingly worried, as he watched the seconds tick by on his watch. It was ten fifty-five, and the train was supposed to be leaving at eleven AM sharp. James gave a sideways glance to Peter, who was blankly staring at the floor. “Do you think…” James trailed off, leaving an unspoken question in the air, of whether or not Sirius was even going to appear, of what his parents might be doing to him at that very moment, or how he mightn't be able to bear leaving Reggie, his younger brother.

Peter picked up on his nerves, and was quick to try and comfort him. “He’ll be here any second mate. You know what Sirius is like with arriving ‘fashionably’ late.”

As if by magic, Sirius appeared at the entrance to the platform looking quite ruffled, accompanied by the very grumpy Kreacher, the Black family house elf. James instantly relaxed, breathing out a short sigh.

The two watched as Sirius strode away from the house elf and onto the train. He even managed to grab the attention of Remus, who had previously been avoiding staring at anything in particular for too long.

Sirius appeared in the compartment, suitcase with the Black family crest stamped on in hand, which he flung onto the baggage rack. James noticed the crest had been scribbled over in what looked like red marker. “Hey guys! God it took me forever to finally get out of that house, they were both absolutely raging at me today..” he said, accompanied by an eye roll. James and Peter both greeted him, and Sirius finally seemed to recognise the presence of the other boy. Sirius stuck out a hand to Remus, who gingerly accepted it. “I’m Sirius.” he said, drawing back his hand to wait for a reply.

“Remus Lupin” The other boy grunted, flushing ever so slightly.

“Do you know what house you’re going to be in?” Sirius asked, collapsing into the seat facing James, to the side of Remus.

There was an odd sense of tension in the compartment, but James thought it was probably because the trio weren’t used to having another person being in the midst of their usual chaos, piled on top of the nerves they all shared. “Dunno.” Came Remus’s short reply. Sirius seemed pretty clueless to Remus’s discomfort, so he began monologuing about how he was going to get into Gryffindor and be the captain of the Quidditch team, and a whole hoard of other things to do with the school.

The Hogwarts Express’s whistle blew, and the slow chugging of the train started as they began to move. After buying a ton of sweets from the trolley to share, the three boys fell into their usual easy chatter. Remus began to relax after a while, even quietly laughing at parts of conversations, which he covered with a fake cough. The tension held in bated breaths in the compartment was melting, slowly but surely, and as the train drew closer to Hogwarts James couldn’t help but feel as though this was the beginning of something great.

THE FEAST

The first thing James noticed about the ‘great hall’ is that it truly was quite great. There were hundreds of floating candles in the air, giving the gargantuan room a soft, golden glow. His eyes followed the path of candles to the ceiling, or really how there appeared to be a lack of a ceiling. It was bewitched to mirror the actual sky outside, which was currently a rich navy, smattered with stars and the nearly full moon was lurking off to the side, not quite a full moon yet.

The trio were sitting at the first year’s section of one of the four huge, wooden tables in the great hall. To their great relief, James, Peter, and Sirius had all made it into the famed house of the Gryffindors. James was immediately sorted into Gryffindor the second the old sorting hat was placed on his head, not much to anyone’s surprise, due to his pureblood gryffindor ancestors. But, long before him, Sirius had to stumble through the crowd and onto the three legged stool. James thought the seconds that ticked by with the sorting hat deliberating Sirius’s future were some of the most tense of his life. He was terrified on behalf of Sirius, who was clearly trying to play it cool. The hall was rendered completely silent, only a stifled cough could be heard from the back of the hall.

The great hall roared with applause from all four tables every time another new student was sorted into one of the four houses, However, when Sirius had his turn at the stool which sat in front of the entire school, it was less of a roaring acceptance and house pride, but slow clapping, where the students’ confusion was evident. James couldn’t really blame them all, Sirius once said that all of his family had been in Slytherin. Like all of his family, ever. He couldn’t imagine how it would feel to be in Sirius’s position.

They were picking through the last of the food that they had piled onto their respective plates, roast beef and chicken, porkchops, all types of potatoes and a variety of vegetables. There was any and every kind of food imaginable, even a few small bowls scattered around, which appeared to be full of … mint humbugs? James couldn’t help but wonder why.

A comfortable silence had settled on them, and a calmer mood had set upon the great hall, and now only murmurs of conversations could be heard along with the vague scraping of cutlery, which combined into a quiet buzz.

Remus, the boy from the Hogwarts Express, was sitting not too far from the trio and patiently listening to the redheaded girl that James had walked right into. From what James could hear, they were talking about what classes they thought were going to be cool. James was looking about the hall, until his eyes landed on another pair that were staring at the girl Remus was talking to. They belonged to a thin, sallow looking first year who had beetle-black eyes and greasy, long hair. The way he was staring at the girl made him slightly uneasy. He accidentally caught the other boy’s eye, and was met with a stern glare. Sirius was busy trying to chat up a girl next to him, and Peter was completely in his own world.

He cleared his throat and decided to interrupt the two. “Oi red, do you know that guy over there? He’s looking at you like a right weirdo.”
She looked him up and down frostily. “That ‘right weirdo’ happens to be my best friend. And, don't call me 'red' you hooligan.” She immediately turned back around, huffing slightly before resuming her conversation. In all honesty, James was wondering who on earth looks at their friends like that?

James looked at her sheepishly, while Sirius snickered. "Sorry. What is your name then?"

"Lily" Came the short reply. She hadn't even turned back round to reply. James felt a little bit embarrassed, his usually undefeatable ego slightly bruised. So what he made a slight oversight? It wasn't his fault her friend is a creep.

James slugged back the dregs of the pumpkin juice in his goblet, and wiped his mouth with the back of his hand. Sirius sighed dramatically, propping his head on his hand. “I don’t think I can move from this spot. They’ll have to drag me to the dorms at this point.” Peter and James both laughed in response, feeling warm and incredibly tired due to the long day of travel, and the good food.

“ALL FIRST YEARS FOLLOW THE PREFECTS TO YOUR RESPECTIVE COMMON ROOMS” Came the strong voice of professor Dumbledore. There was an immediate scuffle of students from all years getting up from the benches and scurrying to the exit at the back of the hall. Sirius, Peter and James all looked around for the prefect, who was a tall, dark-haired seventh year who was wearing crimson robes with a Prefect badge attached.

James grinned at Sirius, who happily returned it. Hogwarts was truly begging to feel like it was really happening, and they couldn’t help themselves but to feel proud for getting into their dream house. They began to follow the prefect, wandering through long hallways lined with portraits calling out to older students they recognised, moving suits of armour studded the corridors every few metres, creaking while adjusting themselves. There were trick steps here and there, disappearing doors and best of all, the moving grand staircase. At least James had an excuse to be late to class.

As they finally reached a stop at a stairwell, the prefect called out the password to a portrait of a singing lady in a ruffled pink dress. She made them wait a whole five minutes, as she said she was ‘giving them a welcoming performance’.

The large group clambered through the portrait hole and into the lushly decorated common room. The floors were lined with a crimson carpet, and there were little huddles of mismatched wooden chairs seated around wooden tables. There were plenty of sofas and armchairs in varying shades of red and gold, with pillows and throws scattered about the place. There were candelabras left on tables and sideboards, washing the room in a soft golden glow where the light of the roaring fire in the large stone fireplace couldn't reach.

The next matter of business was to get everyone allocated to their dormitory, which proved to be an easier task than expected.

The trio walked up to another prefect, who had ginger hair, and a bright, crooked, smile. He introduced himself as Gideon Prewett, and he began searching through the pile of parchment he had collected of what dormitory each of the boys would be staying in. James asked if they could have a room just for the three of them. After furiously looking through the pile, Fabian said that all of the three person rooms were occupied. He called over Remus, who they had met on the train. He looked mildly alarmed at this, but Fabian had firmly suggested that the four of them could share a dormitory together. They all knew it wasn’t really a suggestion though, with how much chaos that Fabian and the three other Gryffindor prefects were trying to deal with.

James offered Remus a warm smile, which was not returned. The light haired boy stuffed his hands in his pockets, turning away from them to go up the stairs to room four, where they’d all be staying for the next five years. At least. James couldn’t help but to feel a little bit bad for Remus, he was being lumped into a room with three complete strangers.

Sirius made to go upstairs, but James caught him by the sleeve of his robe and pulled him and Peter into a tight huddle. “C’mon guys, we’ve gotta make a bit of an effort to make him feel a little more comfortable. I wouldn’t be over the bloody moon if I was thrown into a room with you two idiots if I didn’t know you.” Peter nodded slightly, a vaguely vacant look on his face.

“Of course mate, I’m sure he’ll love us anyways. Not so sure about you two, but I happen to make great first impressions on everyone I meet.” Sirius grinned.

“Oh really? Like who.” Peter replied.

“Your mother.” Sirius offered a high five to James, and they both began laughing as Peter became slightly pink-tinged with anger.

“Of course, sooo mature Sirius- With the looks old Remus was sending your way earlier, I wouldn’t be surprised if he murdered you in your sleep for being so annoying!”

“Right, shut your traps you two. We’re going.”

“Whatever” Peter replied.

James led them up the stairs, and into their room. They were joking about Sirius’s serious snoring problem, complaining about how they were all doomed to be sleep deprived all year. James pushed open the heavy hardwood door, revealing the place they’d be calling home for the next while. There were four beds, each with crimson curtains that could be drawn around them for more privacy. Each bed had a window that the bed was pushed up against, so they could see out while sitting in bed. There was a writing desk in the corner of the room, beside another door which James assumed led to their bathroom.

“Well, this is all ours for the next year.” James said, tone remaining bright.

Their beds were already chosen for them by their cases, which were all beside their beds. James, once again, smiled at Remus. This time he nodded. Well, at least that’s progress.

The rest of the night passed by quickly, with James chatting to Sirius and Peter while they all unpacked. He even said a few offhand things to Remus, like saying how big of idiots the other two were. He wasn’t expecting a reply, but felt as though he should say something to him anyways. While James and Sirius started arguing about whose bed was better, James caught a glimpse of Remus smiling.
