HELL OUTSIDE THE DEATH STAR

Summary:

After the first Death Star exploded, a TIE fighter managed to escape the flames.

What if a stormtrooper, Luke Skywalker and R2D2 crash landed on an abandoned planet?

Work Text:

A harsh red sun beats down on the crash site - two vessels lay smoking in rust-colored sand: a damaged X-Wing fighter and a battered TIE fighter. Through the shimmering heat waves, Luke Skywalker stands with his lightsaber ignited, R2D2 beeping nervously beside him. "DON'T MOVE, TROOPER!" Luke calls out, his blue blade humming. "We're stuck here together, like it or not. This planet seems abandoned, but those ruins in the distance... they look ancient. Sith, maybe. And something tells me we're not alone."

The desert wind howls across the dunes, carrying an otherworldly shriek that makes R2D2's sensors whirl in alarm.

The trooper's blaster is still holstered, and his white armor is scuffed but intact. "YOU KILLED MY LOVER!"

The raw emotion in his voice makes Luke falter, his lightsaber lowering slightly as confusion crosses his young face. "Your... lover?" Luke's brow furrows. "On the Death Star? But I thought - " R2D2 emits a low mournful whistle.

The ancient ruins loom in the distance, their weathered spires reaching the blood-red sky like accusing fingers. The wind carries the scent of decay and something else - something older, more sinister. Through gaps in the stormtrooper's damaged helmet, tears streak down his face, visible to his enemies for the first time.

"I... I didn't know," Luke stammers, his confidence shaken. "The Empire told us you were all just..."

A deep rumbling interrupts him as the ground begins to tremble beneath their feet.

"CLONES?!? That's a lie made up to give you a clean conscience. It's propaganda! I was trying to protect my lover, but you shot him down! I can STILL hear him crying out for me in my com link!"

"TIE fighters don't have com links!"

"I rigged both our ships."

Luke's face drains of color as the raw anguish in the trooper's voice cuts through him. The weight of what he's done - the real human cost - seems to physically stagger him. His lightsaber wavers, then powers down completely. "I... I never thought..." Luke's voice cracks. "They told us you were all just mindless soldiers. But you're not, are you? You're people. Real people with lives and loves and..." R2D2 wheels backward with an alarmed series of beeps as the ground shakes more violently. A massive crack appears in the rust-colored earth between them, steam hissing from its depths. The ancient ruins seem to pulse with an eerie red glow.

"Look," Luke says urgently, "I know you hate me - you have every right to. But something's happening here and if we don't work together, I don't think either of us will survive to settle this."

The crack widens, revealing glimpses of something moving in the darkness below...

"I...I don't hate you. I just want you to know that you aren't as righteous as you think you are."

Luke's words catch in his throat as the trooper's raw honesty strikes deeper than any weapon could. The weight of understanding settles heavily on his young shoulders as he watches the trooper approach the ominous ruins. "WAIT!" Luke calls out. "Those ruins... they're radiating dark energy. R2's sensors are going crazy!" The droid emits a series of frantic beeps as the ground continues to shake. Ancient stone archways loom ahead, covered in strange symbols that seem to write and shift in the red sunlight. The air grows thick with an otherworldly presence.

"The dark side is strong here," Luke warns, following cautiously behind. "Whatever's down there... It's been waiting."

"I HAVE NOTHING TO LIVE FOR...I MAY AS WELL GET YOU OFF THIS WASTELAND MYSELF!" The trooper called back.

Luke's face contorts with a mix of guilt and admiration at the trooper's selfless declaration. The ground trembles more violently now, and the ruins pulse with an intensifying crimson glow.

"That's... that's the most honorable thing I've ever..." Luke starts, but is cut off as R2D2 screams a warning.

The crack in the earth splits wider, revealing ancient machinery deep below - a massive door grinding open in the planet's depths. A hollow voice echoes from the ruins, speaking in a language lost to time. The air grows heavy with dark energy.

"SOMETHING'S AWAKENING!" Luke shouts over the rumbling. "THE DARK SIDE - IT'S RESPONDING TO OUR PRESENCE... TO OUR PAIN!"

The ruins contain a descending staircase, its steps carved with glowing Sith symbols. Whatever lurks below seems to be calling to shared grief and anger... The ancient steps crumble slightly under the trooper's boots as he descends into the darkness. The air grows thick with an ancient malevolence that seems to feed off pain.

"DON'T!" Luke calls from behind, following despite his own warning. "THE DARK SIDE - IT'S TOO STRONG HERE!"

R2D2's worried beeps echo off the stone walls as the trooper ventures deeper. The staircase opens into a vast chamber, illuminated by pools of crimson light. At its center stands an ancient Sith holocron, floating above an altar made of black crystal. The holocron pulses in rhythm with the trooper's heartbeat, responding to his pain. "LEAVE ME! IT'S TOO DANGEROUS! PLEASE...PROTECT YOURSELF!" The raw anguish in the trooper's voice strikes Luke to his core. Luke's face shows conflict between duty and compassion.

"NO!" Luke shouts. "I WON'T LEAVE YOU TO DIE - NOT AFTER WHAT I'VE DONE!"

The holocron pulses faster, its crimson light bathing the chamber. R2D2 wails in electronic terror as dark tendrils of energy begin to curl around the trooper's armor. "This is my choice," he declares, his voice steady despite the darkness consuming him. "IF I WASN'T STRANDED, I'D FIND ANOTHER WAY TO COMMIT SUICIDE!"

Luke's face crumples in horror at the trooper's words. The dark energy swirls more violently around them, feeding off suicidal despair.

"NO!" Luke screams, lunging forward. "YOUR LIFE HAS VALUE! YOUR LOVE HAD VALUE! WHAT I DID WAS WRONG!"

The holocron suddenly explods with blinding red light. The chamber shakes violently as an ancient Sith entity materializes - a ghostly figure wrapped in shadows and malice. "YESSSSS," it hisses. "Such delicious pain. Such perfect despair. Give yourself to the dark side, child. Let your grief become power!"

R2D2 shrieks in electronic terror as dark tendrils wrap around the trooper's armor, lifting him off the ground. The entity reaches for him with spectral claws...

"CAN WE PLEASE MAKE AN EXCHANGE?" The trooper begged.

The ancient entity's form shifts and writes, intrigued by his desperate plea. Its voice echoes with dark promise.

"An exchange?" The Sith spirit purrs. "Your pain is exceptional. What would you offer?"

Luke steps forward, lightsaber raised. "DON'T LISTEN TO IT! THESE BEINGS ONLY KNOW DECEPTION!"

The dark tendrils tighten around the trooper's armor as the entity awaits his response. The holocron pulses faster, sensing a pivotal moment. R2D2's sensors detect massive energy buildups beneath the temple.

"Speak, child of grief," the spirit commands. "What would you trade for power over life and death itself?"

The chamber trembles with dark potential, ancient machinery grinding to life deep below...

"Help this man and his Droid find their way home. I give my life for theirs."

The Sith entity recoils, genuinely shocked by such pure sacrifice. The dark tendrils loosen slightly as the spirit studies him with ancient eyes.

"Such...nobility," it whispers, almost confused. "Even in your deepest despair..."

Luke's lightsaber drops to his side, tears streaming down his face. "No... please... not like this..."

The holocron's light shifts from blood-red to a brilliant white. The chamber fills with blinding radiance as the Sith spirit lets out an otherworldly shriek.

"So be it," the entity declares. "A life freely given holds power beyond darkness..."

The light engulfs everything...

The ancient chamber fills with blinding light as Han Solo's voice crackles through Luke's com link.

"KID! You down there? We picked up some weird energy readings..."

R2D2 beeps excitedly as the Millennium Falcon hovers above the ruins. The storm trooper's armor clatters empty to the ground - the ultimate sacrifice made. Luke stares at the hollow shell, forever changed.

"Han..." Luke's voice breaks. "Get us out of here. I... I have so much to tell you."

The temple begins to collapse as the Falcon's boarding ramp descends. As Luke and R2D2 escape, the empty trooper armor remains behind - a memorial to love, loss and redemption.
