Wings of fire and eyes of death

Summary:

It’s Merida’s second year at the Skyfall Academy, and life is finally settling into something that almost resembles normal. She has friends. Her dragon, Seraphrax, is growing stronger by the day. The sky feels closer, the fire in her chest burns brighter.

Of course, peace never lasts.
At Hogwarts, students and ghosts are turning to stone, and somehow her twin brother’s ability to talk to snakes has everyone convinced both of them are the Heirs of Slytherin.

Merida’s solution? Maybe she can just self-study her Hogwarts classes this year instead.
…What do you mean that’s not allowed?

Chapter 1: World building.

Notes:

Alright I promised to make an updated version of the world building from the first part of the series and here it is.

As always you can skip this chapter and head for chapter two if reading the worldbuilding isn’t what you want to do, or if you just want to get to the story.

Edit 4/4/2026: all relationships tagged in this fic are background, I had initially intended for them to be actually included, but the story said; no. Na-ah.
So sorry if anyone expected the couples to you know be an actual part of the story— all characters appear at some point, but it didn’t become what I had planned.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Dragons: a single species.

Many species of dragons exist in the world, but not all can be ridden or bonded with.

Most can not as a matter of fact be bonded with, but there is one, one we know to be older than most of the known species, one there’s records of having bonded with humans, with beings of magic before.

Appearance

Our dragons, unlike other species, look like what some may describe as a Wyvern, but to us? To our court? They are simply a dragon.

They come in every size and form. Some are sleek and narrow. Some are big and bulky. Some are fast, with long, sharp wings.

Some are slow, by personality or by form.

Our dragons do not have four legs and wings, they have only two legs and two wings.

Some have horns, some have spikes, spines.

It all depends on the genetics of the dragon and sometimes, not even that.

Our dragons come in all colors, from deep and muted, bright and glaring to soft pastels. A dragons egg will tell you how a dragon is going to look.

Personality

Some dragons are temperamental, others are mild and rarely ever get angry.

Narya, the dragon of Prince Celegorm Feanorian is a very temperamental dragon that most do not ever wish to cross, whereas Lord Círdan’s Lilynor is far calmer, far less likely to burn you to a crisp, no but she will likely drown you.

A dragon’s personality and temperament can and in most cases will be affected by their rider, just as their personality and temperament can have an influence on their riders.

The Hatchery

The skyfall hatchery is a round, circular structure, with six floors. The hatchery has two large main doors, heavy in structure that no first, second or third year could open on their own.

Within the hatchery the ground, the first, the second and the third floor is open and accessible to all, the fourth, fifth and sixth floor is accessed through locked doors where you need an older student or an instructor to access.

There are other, smaller entrances to the hatchery but the main doors are always used when introducing the first years.

The dragon eggs cannot under any circumstances become too cold, as this can and has killed the dragon in the egg before.

For that reason the hatchery always has hearths roaring, runes and enchantments to keep the heat inside.

The heavy wooden doors help in this regard, especially as it is an acknowledged if unspoken rule that the main doors are only opened for the first years.

students are given a small, standard sized brazier once they have been chosen by a dragon.

The students are expected to keep the brazier going by themselves and to regularly tend to it. Though they are given help the first couple of days before they are expected to completely manage on their own.

The bonding ritual:

The bonding ritual is an old ritual, one dating back to before the court was formed.

It is performed by someone over eighteen— usually by three people or more. It allows the dragons to see the students personality, and if the dragon is powerful enough, to see a few important core memories.

This all is to help the dragons choose the rider best suited for them.

Yes, it is the dragon, and not the rider that chooses, a lesson well learned centuries ago, a lesson some unfortunately had to relearn.

The dragons use a kind of pull technique to draw the students to them, but the students has to wander around the hatchery— has to let the dragons feel and decide. To snub a dragon, well it has brought bad luck before. The more respect and care you show, the better received you’ll be by the dragons.

Bonding with a dragon can, but does not always cause a change in a rider's magic. Some may find their elemental affinities have become stronger. This is not a guarantee, as some riders have no change in their magic.

Some experience more dragon like behavior and instincts after the ritual— this is normal but it does not happen for every rider, that too is normal.

If the unlikely happens that a rider gets weakened by bonding to their dragon, well that’s why we have healers or healers in training around us constantly.

The quicker we find out why a rider is being weakened the better for both rider and dragon.

Hatching and forming the bond:

Hatching typically happens between 1-3 months, which is when the hatchling and you will slowly start to solidify the bond.

A student can’t demand a dragon hatch before they’re ready, that won’t work, in fact it may end in the hatchling rejecting the bond with the student, which can do harm to both student and hatchling alike.

A dragon will hatch when it’s ready and not a moment before.

Some test their riders, a last test to see if they are worthy still.

The hatching of a dragon is a private thing, even if it takes place in an open or public space.

Do not crowd the rider and their dragon, as it can cause them to lash out.

You are not owed to witness the hatching to demand such, well you might find that mark following you for years to come.

Dragon growth and flight.

Dragons usually grow between the first twenty five to fifty years of their life.

Within the first year of hatching a dragon is expected to grow roughly to the size they’ll be at when they can carry their rider at the age of three.

Their second year is less size growth but rather their bones and muscles, because while they usually have the correct size by that point, their bones and muscle aren’t developed enough or strong enough to handle the weight of a harness, a saddle and a rider.

At least, not for flight, ground movement in short periods? Yes, when supervised but absolutely no flight then.

Year three is when the fun truly begins for the dragons and riders as they learn to navigate the sky together.

After that, each year to every other year sees a steady if slow growth of the dragon until they have reached their full size.

Deaths and broken bonds

Death is unavoidable, even for dragons and their riders.

Sometimes that death happens too soon, and it’s no easy thing, either the rider or the dragon.

Death breaks the bond between the rider and the dragons, leaves an open gaping chasm of a wound in their minds and souls.

Some dragons choose to retire after the death of their rider, never taking up a rider again.

Some choose to become wild, a natural protection of our borders. If you cross one, remember to be respectful of where they dwell, the world is theirs before it was ours.

Few dragons are lucky enough for the bonds to be mended, the most famous of these cases are the three Feanorian brothers currently serving as the survival instructors at the Skyfall Academy.

Former King Ereinion Gil-Galad being another example, his dragon waiting thousands of years for his return, not knowing if he would or could.

The point is, if a bond breaks, it is not the end, riders are not turned away for that loss, just as dragons aren’t abandoned.

They can choose to retire, to help the court in other ways.

A rider does not have to choose to bond to a dragon to stay a Skyfall student or to even graduate, it is the student and the dragon’s choice if they are willing to take the chance of bonding again, to take the chance of heartbreak once more.

How the rest of the world sees the skyfall students and the Storms court riders.

Most Hogwarts students find the skyfall students  to be intimidating and strange. They do not understand the life a rider lives and the rules they live by.

They do not understand the discipline, the training a rider goes through, and that is alright.

The life of a rider isn’t for all, it’s harsh and at times cruel in ways no one expects.

Some of them look at us with awe, some of them look at us with fear, and the ones you better appreciate are the ones who just see the person you are.

Not the rider, not the person capable of ruining lives in seconds, not the person who trains day and night to survive, just you.

the ministry wishes they could get involved, that they could get a foothold in the skyfall academy. That they could get inside the Storms court. They see the riders as too independent, dangerous and too unpredictable— especially the desert hunters.

The hunters who took their pound of flesh when the ministry killed one of their founders and leaders Leonora Black.

Too bad that there’s laws prohibiting them from getting their claws in the court and academy.

riders are elite and tend to keep to themselves. They don’t really interact with the witches and wizards of magical Britain. This is because of past tensions and fights over the centuries that have ended ugly for both parties.

Most riders see magical Britain as sheep, lazy and sitting ducks. They do not like the way they treat magical creatures or their children for that matter.

If it wasn’t because they do not want to deal with the questions then the Storm’s court riders would likely have whipped them out of existence a while back.

Other dragon species.

Not every court uses the same kind of dragon that the Storms court does.

The Japanese and Chinese have their preference in the dragons national to their countries.

Most of America prefers to use western dragons.

And as for the breeds such as the Welsh green, the Hungarian horntail and Swedish short-snout? Well they certainly existed, but no one in the Storms court was going to try to bond with those dragons, simply because one couldn’t.

Incomparable magic for one reason. A lesser intelligence than their chosen kind.

Not to say they’re stupid, they aren’t, bonding with them and riding them simply isn’t doable or advised.

—————————————————-

Court: the storms court- protects the Northern European counties from outside and inside threats.

Country of origin: British.

 founders: Leonora Black, Lysander Storm,

The storms court is the dragon order that protects the Northern European countries such as England, Sweden, Ireland, Scotland, Norway, Iceland, Greenland and Denmark.

They protect their borders from outside influences like rouge dragons, riders that has deserted their dragon orders and at times even internal threats. The storms court has their main headquarters in Scotland, with some smaller ones in Denmark, Iceland and Sweden.

The Storms court is the only authority over the riders and dragons. Neither the ministry nor the crowns of the kingdoms they protect have a say or sway over them, nor does the ICW.

They have clauses and agreements with them which are in place to protect magical, mundane and riders alike.

Laws:

1: if a rider or any person forces a bond with a dragon there is only execution. We do not play or give second chances, not for this.

2: consent is everything- to dragons and humans alike. Force yourself on anyone in any kind of way and you will be exiled, with potential for execution.

3: A rider who abandons their dragon is a dead rider and not of our court, not one of ours. You will find no friend among our allies and let’s hope our enemies will be more merciful than we will.

4: The bond with your dragon is the most sacred, break it and you will be hunted, never welcomed anywhere.

5: Teach the young, do not break them. Nurture them, guide them and protect them for they are the future.

6: Anyone guilty of abuse is executed. Be it spousal, parental or otherwise, no abuser is welcome among our ranks.

7: Punishments aren’t to punish, they are to guide, to teach and care. A punishment is not effective or of use if it does nothing but cause pain. A punishment isn’t of use if one does not understand or know why they are being punished.

8: no pregnant rider is allowed to fly past the second trimester- it is too dangerous. Try and your flight privileges will be revoked, that is if your dragon will even let you get in your saddle.

9: protect the young, the sick and those who can’t defend themselves.

10: casual sex is fine, so long as all parties are fifteen and above, so long as everyone has contested and agrees.

11: never let the ministry get so much as a fucking toe in our ranks again, no thank you, I think NOT.

12: if a rider attacks another rider with their dragon the dragon is removed and an investigation is launched.

13: No matter what the case is, there will be an investigation- to ensure that the condemned is indeed guilty.

14: all riders have full authority and autonomy over their own body and if a rider finds themselves pregnant but does not wish to keep the baby then a termination is supported. Termination is allowed without risk the first six months as its first there the fetus gains a magical signature of its own.

15: a rider who struggles with self harm, with their mentality isn’t weak or a burden but a member in need of care and support.

16: a rider who takes their own life is not shamed or criticized- we know that some of the hardest battles are the ones within, and not every battle can or needs to be won.

17: A rider who works better alone is no less a rider than the ones who work in larger teams.

18: Do not force someone into a team, even if on paper that team looks perfect, it will only breed anger and resentment. It will destabilise the team, lead to unpredictable or unwanted behaviour. It can and has led to situations that wouldn’t and shouldn’t have happened.

19: Don't fear a lone rider, but do not underestimate them— they are the ones you never see, never hear. The ones who strike when it’s least expected.

20: flight teams are important, so are the riders who work better in smaller ones or on their own. All riders have a commander— a person who they report to, for and after every mission.

21: Do not fear the desert hunters, so long as you don’t betray the court for if you do then they are your worst enemy.

22: not every rider stays active, some become healers, historians, smiths they are all important, valid they are our backbones— we’d be nothing without them.

23: A deserter isn’t evil— they just didn’t agree with us, that’s fine, not every deserter is lost.

24: not every deserter is a threat— not every one is hunted. Stick to the hunter list— do not hunt those not on it. Leave the hunting to the desert hunters— it’s their job, and it’s not a kind of easy one. Do not make it harder for them by interfering.

25: the skyfall program can only remove students within the skyfall program, we have no authority over the regular hogwarts students.

26: the ministry once had the court leashed— we lost over three hundred riders and nearly as many dragons, including one of our founders.

27: while intercourse is allowed at fifteen, marriage is first allowed at eighteen. No one expects riders to marry at that age, many riders never marry at all.

28: physical intimacy between flight teams is not uncommon— please remember to talk about everything, consent  and communication above all else. No flight captains are allowed to abuse their position as flight leader. If a flight leader is found to do so they may be publicly punished or let their team privately handle it.

29: relationships between instructors and students have happened before, it will happen again, just keep it to the laws and rules and report it to the superiors.

30: an exile can be a deserter, a person who has betrayed the court

31: no rider is of legal age until they are 18, but first seen as an actual adult before 22-24.

32: adhd, autism and other such diagnoses does not mean riders are less, or a burden, their brains just function differently than most.

33: riders who have diagnoses such as: pyromania, sociopathy, psychopathy, bipolar disorder, rage attacks, multiple personalities will be given whatever help they need from mind healers, medicine, they are not turned away but they will be monitored for their and everyone else’s safety.

They will only be removed if they are deemed too big of a risk to themselves and others.

This does not always mean the end of their career, sometimes the medication isn’t working and needs to be changed.

34: students do not have to pay for their standard gear as The Storms court has a deal with their partnered shops so everything the students need goes over the schools account. They just have to show their acceptance letter to the Skyfall, which gets then verified by a spell.

If a student wishes for more expensive or luxurious things then they will have to pay for it.

35: students who have a fear of heights aren’t forced to fly if they aren’t ready or comfortable. Not all riders belong in the air.

36:…why do you all EXPECT TO HAVE TO PAY YEARLY FOR BEING A SKYFALL STUDENT?! I repeat, there is our entrance fee, that’s it.

For more expensive materials, yes you have to pay, but no, you do not have to pay us yearly for your kids education!

No not for the Hogwarts classes either! It’s paid by us! The Storms Court!

Punishments:

1: public punishments include whipping, beating, branding, stripping or flogging. In worst case execution.

2: flight teams is expected to handle punishments for their members, including the flight captain and second (this does not include the skyfall students, they fall under other rules)

3: exile can be seen as worse than death, depending on the person and the case.

4: being hunted by desert hunters means there’s a bounty on you from the courts bounty or kill list.

5: Grounding is the lightest punishment you can get, as you just aren’t allowed to fly on your dragon for a set period of time.

————————/—————————/

Clauses with the ICW & the crown:

1: the ministry is not allowed any kind of power over the Storms court or the skyfall academy.

2: the Storms court operates on its own— they are not bound by our laws but their own.

3: no auror is allowed to arrest or apprehend a rider without having gone through a rider & ICW repentant.

4: The Skyfall Academy is legally allowed to remove its own students from unfit homes. This includes them just suspecting that things are not safe at home for their students.

5: the ministry is not allowed to meddle with the Storms court’s things; this includes their information gathers, their missions or diplomatic deals.

6: to not repeat the past of the ministry killing riders— as they did shortly after the courts formation twenty years before hogwarts completion, a ban has been placed by the British crown, danish crown and the ICW stating that if the ministry starts unjustly executing again the storms court is allowed to retaliate in any form they please.

——————————————————

Everyone knows what happens if the ministry gets power over the riders- the past will repeat and they’ll start executing riders once more. No one wants to be part of that mess again. The storm court will rather disband or commit court wide suicide than allow the ministry to get a leash on them again.

The storms court has ranks and expects its riders to follow their laws and rules, but they aren’t that militant. They want their riders to be curious, to ask, ponder and debate.

The storms court does not tolerate abuse, of any kind. Be it towards dragons or humans.

The storms court while have a none tolerance for abuse can’t control every rider and sometimes someone fall through.

Desert hunters aren’t evil, or scary— they just have one of the hardest jobs of all the riders.

Most riders hold deep respect for the desert hunters as it’s not an easy task to have to go hunting people you once worked with.

No one complains when they request to retire earlier than most.

———————————————————-

Ranks: each rank has to be earned, a rank is never just given. Just because you have been in the court for a certain amount of time does not mean you get an upgrade- the court functions on merit and experience.

The storm king/queen: the leader of the storms court. The storm king/queen has the last say but there has to be an agreement from the council and no, the leader cannot choose who is in the council.

The storm council: made up of twelve senior members both active and retired. Is chosen via an election by the riders. This happens every tenth year.

Storm warden: senior riders who are active and have been for over ten years.

Storm tempests: riders who have been in the court for over five years.

Storm criers: riders who have been in the court for three years.

Storm fallers: newest riders who has just graduated.

———————————————————

Positions and titles outside of ranks.

Researcher: a person who researches, magic, dragons, elements, everything that researcher does.

History master: keeps account of all missions and their reports, battles, lists of act and inactive riders.

Assassin/ infiltrator: infiltrate and gathers information as well as assasinate.

Healer: heales mainly riders but can with help of the care takers heal dragons too.

Instructor: teaches students how to care, fly and fight with their dragons.

Care taker: takes care of retired, injured or sick dragons.

Runesmiths: makes the focusie for the riders.

Weapons smiths: makes the weapons for the storm courts riders and the Skyfall students.

Desert hunter: the riders tasked with getting rid of the rouge riders and their dragons— usually small flight teams or solo riders.

A desert hunter is a specialized rider who usually takes out traitors to the court.

3 year: flight teams are assigned here, each flight team is between six to seven members. The flight captains can be a person between seventh and tenth year.

Smaller flight teams also exist for the riders who work better in smaller teams or on their own— they are still required to learn to work in teams.

The second in command can be someone between sixth and tenth year.

Each team is a mix of years between third to tenth. You are expected to spend time with your team and bond with them outside of mandatory training.

The skyfall instructors can and will remove a student from their home if they suspect abuse, neglect or mistreatment of any kind.

The skyfall program allows students to stay year round, they do not need to have their parents permission for this.

Students starts to receive missions in their fifth year and is paid for their missions.

————————————————-

Rules and punishments:

1: flight hours are regulated by the flight instructors, if one wishes to fly outside of the mandated flight hours you need permission from a flight instructor and someone from seventh to tenth year.  Fail to follow this and you will find yourself grounded.

2: It is not allowed to fly near the castle! If one flies near hogwarts they will find themselves grounded and having serious conversations with the flight instructor’s.

3: Reckless flying is only allowed in emergency situations and within reason. If a student is found to be recklessly flying they are grounded and not allowed to see their dragon for a period of time, the time may wary depending on the severity of the situation.

4: Unsanctioned fights are prohibited and the fighting students will find themselves in detention and having serious conversations.

5: To harm or force yourself onto another student usually ends with the offender expelled and executed by the storms court.

6: Casual sex is allowed and fine as long as all parties are above fifteen and have agreed and given clear consent.

7: And students- both male and female take contraceptives, though it’s not mandatory.

8: If a pregnancy happens it up to the student whever to keep the baby or terminate, either choice is supported.

9: Corporal punishment is a last effort, it’s not to punish, it’s to correct- it’s to teach that actions have consequences especially such as self destruction, repeated self harm, recklessness that endangers others and one self.

Punishment is handled by teachers but also by flight captains and seconds if they feel they can handle being the ones responsible for the correction.

10: If a student is self harming, self destructive or has trauma with corporal punishments then that is taken into consideration and every other method is used— they do not wish to cause their students harm, much less ones who are already in pain.

11: flight teams are evaluated every couple of months to make sure that the teams work. This helps ensure that riders who work better alone do not wind up being forced to play teammate.

This includes riders who naturally are better on their own, riders who has severe trust issues or trauma and for that reason can’t work in a large team where you have to trust and rely on each other.

12: A rider who is better suited on a smaller flight team or a solo flight team is no less a rider than those on a bigger flight team.

13: physical relationships between skyfall students, flight teams or even with certain instructors aren’t uncommon, but it is expected that everyone talks it out and instructors report it to the head teacher of the academy.

14: It is advised that students do not bring pets if they do not wish to see them eaten by a dragon.

15: failing classes will result in talks with the skyfall instructors on what is going on and why the student is failing.

16: students removed from their homes can become a warden of the storms court, a specific rider, other family member or if they are near their majority ask to be given a person who checks up on them.

————————————————//—

The skyfall students have two houses

The skyhold: a fortress built into the cliffs on the other side of the forbidden forest, this is where the hatchery, dragon enclosures for the young dragons and first through fourth year live.

The skyhold has five floors, the first four are where the students live and the fifth is the instructors.

Each student has their own room.

The third and fourth floor has common spaces with the flight teams built around them. This allows for privacy and more private bonding.

The hatchery has six floors, the first three floors are the only ones openly accessible to the new students on their first night. The other floors need an instructor or seventh to tenth year student for access.

The dragon enclosures are where the younger dragon live after having hatched, both the bonded and the unbounded when there are any.

The storm fortress: a fortress built into the mountains near Hogwarts, it’s where the older students and the apprentices live.

The storm fortress has a lot of common spaces where the flight teams spend time together, they are usually equipped with their own kitchens the riders are expected to keep stocked themselves.

Their dragons live in caves in the mountains.

Both fortresses have underground systems that leads to hogwarts for easier access to the school.

The instructors live in both fortresses, and have offices in both.

Both fortresses have their own libraries but they also use hogwarts.

Students may eat in hogwarts great hall but most don’t as they have a vastly different diet than the rest of hogwarts.

Skyfall Weapons: Named Arms & Their History

“A weapon is not just steel. It is legend, it is blood, it is the voice of those who wielded it before.”

The skyfall and the the storms court value their weapons as much as their dragons. Many weapons have unique names, legendary histories, and specific purposes in combat.

1. Weapon Categories & Their Traditional Names

1. Sky Sabers (Curved Swords, Aerial Combat Weapons)

“Light as the wind, sharp as lightning.”
 Designed for dragonback combat.
Used for quick, slashing strikes in high-speed fights.
Often enchanted to channel elemental power.
Some famous Sky Sabers are passed down through generations.

Examples of Named Sky Sabers:

It is rumoured to be modelled after an ancient weapon once wielded by a famous Stormborn duelist.

Allows for quick, precise cuts while moving.

5. Windknives (Throwing Daggers, Used for Precision Kills & Disabling Foes)

“Strike fast, strike true. A single cut can decide the battle.”
