Chapter Text
Dolly stands beneath the towering branches of a dying tree, watching as crows circle the decaying interior of the place Carmina calls home. Light shines in through the exposed roof, and it dances along the murder of crows’ feathers. The sound is deafening, but it’s familiar in such a way she can’t help but smile.
Carmina walks in after her, cawing in the distinctly human way that separates her from the animal she calls kin. The noise dies down, and some of them fly to meet her, landing on the ground. Inquisitively looking up at her in that way that makes Dolly forget they’re weapons made to kill.
The expression on Carmina’s face softens, her head tilting to mirror her crows.
They saved me, you know.
“I know,” Dolly replies, gaze still fixed on the crow looking at Carmina. “I’m so, so glad they did.”
