The Fire Isn't Gone

Summary:

✦ Boscha has been showing noticeable favouritism toward Amity Blight after their Grudgby games, much to the dismay of the rest of the team. ✦

My very first fanfiction posted. I obviously wanted to see if I was up to scratch to write a rarepair that I particularly enjoy and I do hope that people enjoy.

This is specifically season one Amity!

Feedback is welcome and appreciated.

Chapter 1: Ember

Chapter Text

It was best to keep appearances. That was the lesson that the Grudgby Captain had learnt quickly while at Hexside.

It was best to act like everything was normal. It was best to ensure that you acted the same so you could stay at the top, and nobody had a chance to swoop in and take anything, especially if it was the chance to potentially overthrow someone whom was deemed as the Queen of Hexside.

Boscha was the Grudgby Captain, and had quite the reputation and control over the school of magic and demonics. Most notably during Grudgby season, where people enjoyed reveling in her presence the most.

It was nice, sure, but it felt a lot less… Complete. Amity had stepped down from Grudgby Captain but offered to continue to play as a regular teammate after she had left some of her teammates injured during a game.

At first, Boscha was annoyed and upset and frustrated. She wasn't sure why. Amity had changed. She was much less competitive and willing to send jeers toward the losers within the halls and it made Boscha's chest burn with annoyance.

Boscha didn't like change. At all.

And this was a change she most definitely didn't appreciate. She had been friends with Amity for a while, and while Amity had dug her heels in the dirt and actively stated that she had been forced by her parents to do so, and she wasn't really fond of Boscha in the grand scheme of things.

Boscha was of-course, not convinced. Amity had visited her house rather frequently, and while Boscha was mainly aware it was to get away from the twins and her parents, Amity had other options, but she chose Boscha instead.

They walked together and ate together consistently. There was no way that Amity didn't like her company.

She was stubbornly set on that, to the point where she was incredibly keen on proving it to Amity. She'd begin to show Amity special treatment during practices much to the dismay and confusion to the rest of the team. Boscha hadn't even noticed she was doing so.

It started small. The occasional check-in after a practice game to ensure that Amity wasn't too injured, and the complete disregard of the rest in favor of the witch. Of-course her teammates had noticed. Boscha had never expressed much concern for them, either.

It evolved into more furious checking when real games happened and they'd face other schools such as Glandus, and Boscha was incredibly keen on making sure she wasn't injured.

Of-course, Amity was clever. She was more than intelligent enough to recognize that Boscha, was in-fact, showing her special treatment. She watched with narrowed eyes but didn't complain verbally as Boscha did check on her, but she didn't seem very pleased, either.

It had reached a boiling point when Boscha had assisted her in walking home after a game. They were walking along the stone path and Amity didn't look very happy, and Boscha seemed to notice immediately.

'What?' Amity couldn't help but demand in a hiss. 'You've been desperately plodding after me for days. Don't think I'm up to scratch for the team because I'm not captain?' She demanded dryly, her voice withdrawn and her yellow eyes slitted.

There was no response from the three-eyed witch. Not for a while. They continued to walk.

Amity felt a lot of tension building. Boscha was still acting aloof despite her recent behavior.

'Stop.' Amity then grunted, moving with a limp in-front of Boscha and finally halting the witch. She was glaring at her feet as if she was trying to dig a hole into the concrete mentally. 'Explain,' she then demanded, crossing her arms over her chest and narrowing her eyes.

'Yes, okay,' Boscha relented, albeit she sounded seriously annoyed which in turn frustrated Amity more. 'I don't think you're not fit for the team, of-course not,' she then replied, sounding curt. 'But you've changed and you're acting different and it's… Annoying.'

'Change is good!' Amity snapped. 'I've spent ages doing nothing but schoolwork, regular work and Grudgby! I need something different.'

'So your 'different' is doing a one-eighty in personality?' Boscha retorted hotly, now seemingly just as frustrated as Amity as the two glared at each-other. If looks could kill, both of them would be dead in the street.

'It's not a one-eighty,' Amity replied, trying to calm herself as she attempted to harness the frustration out of her voice, to pull on the reigns. Simply arguing with Boscha would never be enough and it wouldn't actually help. 'You shouldn't be seeing my personally as black and white. I'm experiencing my life in a full-range, just as you are.'

Boscha tapped her foot against the concrete, and she could practically see the witch tense in response. As much as Amity wanted to view Boscha as complex, she wasn't. She was rather easy to read in regards to her emotions and that was because Boscha was either annoyed or happy, there wasn't much in-between.

'It doesn't change anything,' was the hesitant and curt response from Boscha. 'It doesn't change that you're changing and pushing me away. I hate it.'

Amity took a deep breath, scuffing her feet against the ground before sighing. Thankfully, she felt a little calmer than before. She had learnt how to keep her temper in check as of late.

'This is the first time you've genuinely communicated with me beyond dry texts,' Amity mused, albeit that lace of frustration was still there. She couldn't help me.

'I talk to you more than that!'

'I'd hardly consider it talking.'

Silence stretched between them again. For several moments, Boscha had said nothing which was new. She always had something to say.

'..Okay?' Boscha then grunted. 'What do you want from me?'

'I want to know why you're so upset because I'm changing.' She grumbled. 'Because it's not nearly as serious as you're making it out to be.'

Boscha seemed to sigh, before then closing all three of her eyes to consider what she was going to say. Amity stood patiently, still standing in-front of her but now she was a lot more calm than before.

'..I just don't want to lose you,' Boscha responded after a few heartbeats, which was normally far too vulnerable for the witch. All three eyes had glared away and refused to look at Amity. 'I don't want you to walk away and leave me behind.'

A thoughtful expression formed on Amity's face, and she then furrowed her eyebrows. 'So you started showing me special treatment?' She asked, before then letting out another sigh in return.

Wow, both teens sighed quite a lot.

'It wasn't meant to be special treatment!' Boscha responded defensively, shooting another glare full of daggers at Amity. 'I just wanted to…' She trailed off. Titan, she didn't really know what she wanted to do.

Convince Amity that she really wasn't that bad? Yeah, sure. But, what was her goal beyond that, if there even was one?

She felt rather stunned and stood there for several moments and Amity noticed too, grumbling in reply. 'You didn't know,' she offered as explanation, which Boscha simply nodded. '..Okay, well stop. I don't need special treatment. I'm more than capable of watching myself and caring for myself.'

Boscha narrowed her eyes, before a smirk suddenly formed and she whisked past Amity, making the witch stumble due to her injured leg from the match prior. '…Mm, you say that,' she responded almost wickedly. 'But obviously, you aren't captain. I am now. And besides, you always end up the most injured in the field.'

'Watch your tongue, you're only captain because I stepped down.' Amity retorted, but there was some unfortunate truth to her words. Amity had been getting rather careless and got injured more than the rest of her teammates despite knowing how the field worked.

'..You should let me help you,' Boscha then grunted.

'Why? I don't help you.'

'Because, idiot, you're my friend. We've been friends for ages. I want to help you, even if it's something stupid.'

'..Mmm.' Amity's response was a hum and she could tell Boscha was getting wound up all over again so she raised her hands in a peaceful gesture. 'As-long as you do it for the rest of the team.'

'…We'll see.'
