Harry is bored out of his mind and regretting the decision to help Ron pick a present for Hermione when he spots the ring.
It is in its own case, separate from the other jewellery in the shop, an emerald gem reflecting beautifully at its center. Harry has never seen anything more beautiful. Somehow, it reminds him of Malfoy.
“See something you like?” the shop owner asks, momentarily distracted from talking up his wares to Ron.
Harry nods. “It's beautiful.”
“This is a one of a kind piece from Boucheron, the last one he ever made. It was only put on the market almost a century after its creation,” the man brags, obviously pleased with himself for having it in his shop.
All Harry can think about is how it will look on Malfoy's finger. He imagines everyone at the Ministry seeing the ring on Malfoy and knowing that Harry put it there. A hot wave of want hits him.
“Sounds pretentious,” Ron says, pulling Harry out of his fantasy. “Looks exactly like something the ferret would wear.”
Harry turns to the owner. “How much?”
“Excuse me?”, the shop owner asks.
“The ring.” Harry nods to the ring. “I want it. How much?”
“Mr Potter—” the man starts, only to be interrupted by Ron.
“You're buying the ring?” Ron exclaims. “You're not seeing anyone.”
Ron is right: Harry is not seeing anyone, but he is about to be engaged.
