Chapter 1: fatherhood

Chapter Text

The soldier sat in his cell room, the hard concrete floor grounding him. He doesn't know why they unfroze him this time but he does know it's something important. They said they had to “get it ready”. He continued staring at the wall, it would have bent under his will if he wasn't interrupted by his handler opening the door. The soldier stood at attention, waiting for his inevitable orders.

“Soldier, HYDRA has a new mission for you.” His handler said pausing most likely for that dramatic effect he always loved, or to show dominance over the soldier, probably both. But what surprised him was a guard coming in holding a toddler. “This is паук, and your new priority, make sure he doesn't die and train him. Hail HYDRA.”

“Hail HYDRA.” he repeated and his handler and the guard left, leaving the small toddler to waddle around. The soldier watched him for a moment before the child started coming towards him, babbling.

“da da da da” the child held onto his leg, the Winter soldier felt his icy heart defrost at the sight of this innocent creature smiling up at him. He would protect him. Picking up the child he held him close to his chest, the baby giggled before he settled him on the thin bed. He rubbed the baby's back as it yawned and rolled over.

_____________

It had been a few months since his handler left the soldier a child, who he since found out very much lives up to his name's sake. More than once the soldier has found паук on the walls or hanging from the ceiling. He was easy to take care of, for a baby at least, and hey he was almost potty trained. For the soldier it felt more like taking care of an adorable puppy. But it was his puppy.

Currently he was taking the child for outside time. It was sometime they got in a controlled courtyard of grass where they allowed the soldier's child to play. The soldier watched as the baby held his finger “dragging” him around trying to show him things he found. The soldier never smiled but every time they went outside he could feel one sneaking up on him.

______________

Паук was 6 now. It felt like a flash, the soldier could still remember when his little паук was babbling at him, now he was constantly talking to him about books the guards let him read. He had also started training. It hurt the soldier to see him get hurt but it was all worth it, he would be able to protect himself. Outside time was now time for his kid to read, they allowed him in a small library. The soldier wasn't allowed in, they sent him to extra training.

The only thing that made it worth being forced away from his kid is what he heard the doctors talking about. His little Паук was destined to become just as strong maybe stronger than him. It was a day the soldier looked forward to. When Паук was old enough he would take him and escape, they would be free.

______________

The winter soldier was forced to leave.

Паук was 8 and crying as the winter soldier suited up. The handlers never allowed much physical contact or comfort when Паук was of age. But now they looked away, understanding this was an exception. Placing his metal hand on his kid's cheek he reassured him silently.

I will be back my little паук.

It was a few days later when the soldier returned, his brain was fuzzy. He had killed the starks and taken the serum but something felt off. All he wanted was to see his kid and sleep, that always made the fuzzy feelings better.

______________

Паук was 9, but was still as scrawny as ever. His clothes hung off his thin frame slightly. He was lifting weights in the training area, The soldier watched him silently.

“Hey winter?” the boy asked when training was over, coming up to him, he clearly had an embarrassing question, he was never afraid of asking him a question. The soldier grunted slightly and directed them back to their cell room, the guards going around them.

When they entered the soldier listened as the door was locked and the guards walked away before turning his attention back to his son. He heard the word on a mission, his target begging for his kid, his sons, life, but there must be no witnesses, the fuzziness in his brain was heavier that night. But he could feel, in the back of his mind, that the word was perfect for Паук.

“W-what are missions like?” Паук asked looking down at his feet, the soldier sighed. Leading his son over to the bed he sat down next to him.

“They aren't too bad, as long as you listen and don’t hesitate you get to come back sooner, did the handlers say you were going on one soon?” he asked petting the boys hair a he leaned against him.

“No it’s just you're always different when you come back.” the boy whispered into the air, the soldier's hand stilled.

“Have I ever hurt you?” he asked, something like despair in his voice.

“No, never, you're just quieter, you always ask me to call you Bucky.”
