Childe of Chaos

Summary:

You ever have a strange basin full of weird magical liquid appear in your room and tell you you're special? No? Just me?

Sick, well, I've apaprently got a ride coming to take me to an equally magical camp where I'll be safe, maybe, so I'll catch you in a bit!

Chaos Gacha OC Character in AU Percy Jackson.

Chapter 1: Fairly certain that sink wasn't there before

Chapter Text

Well, either I've finally gone all the way mad, or... No I think that's the only reasonable explanation. Though if I've gone mad is what I think a reasonable explanation actually reasonable?

In fairness, I can't think of another explanation even if I ignore the 'reasonable' part.

The swirling black and purple liquid in a silver basin that sprung up from my floor seems unlikely to be anything other than madness.

Though, in double fairness, I thought the same on my 16th birthday last month when that dog's eyes started glowing red, and then it tried to eat my face so maybe I should learn to have a bit more caution.

Eh.

Leaning over the basin my vision shrinks until all I see is the swirling liquid as it starts bubbling.

The liquid seems to slowly start resolving, turning into purple text on black, and while I couldn't even begin to tell you what language it is, I can read it. The closest I can get is like runes maybe? I don't know.

Childe of Chaos. Our apologies it has taken so long to become aware of your existence. It has been long since any child of ours reached maturity, and never before as a half Deity. The Aspect has compiled further information in a letter. Know that We are watching.

As the liquid swirls again and I pull back, a silver envelope rises out of the basic, sitting calmly on top.

With shaking hands I take it, feeling the stupidly high quality paper, the basin vanishing in shadow as I do so.

The orphanage is mercifully quiet, and checking that my door is locked I sit down on the bed, popping open the purple wax seal in the shape of a droplet.

¬¬¬¬

Jaxen Cole-Gray

It is my sincerest apologies that I did not know of your existence. I am an aspect of Chaos, the primordial. What you know as the mythologies of this world are true, for the most part. Deities may have children with mortals, creating Demigods. It had been millennia since as Aspect went out to the mortal world, and just over 18 years ago I went on such an expedition. It is possible to know all through the lens of chaos, but that does not remove the worth of experience.

Around Sixteen years ago I met a woman, one who felt more alive than any I or the other Aspects had ever met, you would know her as Maria Cole-Gray. I felt drawn to her, and experienced what I believe you call a 'whirlwind romance'. However, my time in the mortal world was drawing to a close. But I did not know I had left a part of myself with Maria. Truly I did not know it was possible, an outcome I had never had need to look into. I should also use this chance to make you aware that your mother was a legacy demigod, a child of a Greek demigod of Tyche.

And thus, you came into this world. Your minor connection to chaos alongside your mortal half meant We could not see you. As such, you grew up alone, unaware of your heritage, for that We can only apologise, but especially I.

We have arranged for transportation to a safe location for you. In addition, as the only demigod child of Chaos, We saw it fit to grant you a boon, as the other gods do to their own children. Thankfully, we have more freedom than most, and so have designed something befitting your connection, with some aid from a Traveller of sorts.

This will not be out last communication, but We suspect you will need some time to 'take all of this in'. Please remain at your home to await transportation, We will await tales of your exploits.

- Varana The Spark, Aspect of Chaos

¬¬¬¬

Varana... The name my mother said belonged to my father. He was a primordial god? And all of that's real? Greek gods?

I let my head fall into my hands, even as I feel a new 'pressure' within me. I'll deal with that in a minute or five...

What the fuck does this mean for me? Is this why Mom died? Some monster god bullshit?

And I'll be going 'somewhere safe'? I mean, not that there's much to miss here, school is shit and it's not like I'm that close to any of the other kids here. About the only time I get any attention is when people first see... my eyes. The fucking violet eyes that people talk about, good or bad. I knew they were from my father, well Mom said so at least.

Fucking hell. Wait, is hell real? I guess if the Greek gods are then Hades or the Underworld are. But Fa- Varana said 'mythologies' as in plural. How does that work? Do Apollo and Ra carpool to make the sun rise?

As much as I'm freaking out, and trust me I don't think that would be possible to overstate, this all feel strangely 'right'.

Well, I'm not going to get any answers like this, and I'm supposed to just sit around until my magical taxi or whatever gets here.

I'm sure I'll have a proper freak out at some point, but also, this sounds like some fantasy webnovel type shit, and as someone who pretty much had books and fanficiton as the only reliable entertainment I am a little excited. I mean, what orphan with a boring life hasn't wished to discover secret powers and be whisked away on an adventure?

Reaching for the 'pressure' inside me I'm only slightly surprised when the basin forms again. It's like an optical illusion coming into view, for a split second it's like a silhouette before it 'turns' becoming fully 3D. Trippy.

And while that feels like the bulk of my 'power' I can still feel something inside me. It's a little harder to grasp at first but after moment a weight settles in my hand. Opening up there are three golden coins in my palm, looking like something from ancient Ro- oh, well, probably from ancient Greece I guess.

Well, lets see what my very belated birthday presents are I suppose?

Throwing the first coin into the basin it sinks without sound, the liquid swirling faster before it slows, beginning to form that same runic language.

I grunt, rubbing at my head as years upon years of knowledge and experience flood my mind. After a moment it starts to ease, it feels like whatever my 'base' ability or enhancements are make it easier to handle, I can't imagine anyone remotely normal could have that happen without serious issues.

Well, worst case scenario I get a scholarship to medical school.

Though rubbing the two apparently named Drachma between my fingers I suspect that's not where my life is heading.

I flick the next coin in.

I'm sorry, I can just get people?

Summoning him, a mid 30s man in a nice suit appears in my room. If people cared here that would be a real cause for concern.

"Good morning Sir, is there anything in particular you require of me?" He asks with a polite nod.

"Uh, to be honest I'm not really sure where my life is going from here, but I mean money, connections, that sort of stuff is never going to be bad. I guess just go do your thing? If there's an area or whatever you're interested in then follow that?"

He lets out a small chuckle.

"Of course Sir, it would be my pleasure. If your life is about to become 'messy' is there a way you would like me to stay in touch?"

"Yeah, let me give you my email, worst case I can get on it at a library or something."

After confirming the plan, as little of one there is, he departs, giving me a firm handshake as he does.

I'm sure that'll be fine.

Alright, one last coin.

[Frostbite]
|Uncommon Ability|
Allows you to rapidly freeze targets you are touching, with training you can increase the area of effect to freeze someone's entire body by grabbing their hand, or freeze the floor of an entire street.

------------------------

An honest to god, or gods, superpower. I'm not going to be taking over the world with it or anything, but it's real actual power. Mine and mine alone.

Looking around my pretty barren room I pick up an orange I grabbed earlier.

"Uh, Chaos, Varana, Father? I'm not sure if this right, but this offering is for you, thank you. Maybe I'll just have an orange floating in magic liquid, if so, pretend you never saw this."

Throwing it in there's no splash again and it sinks down. When nothing happens for a few seconds I unsummon the basin, and since no orange fell to the floor and I'm not cursed I'm going to assume I did something right, or at least not wrong which is good enough if I've learnt anything.

Picking up my drink, frost quickly spreads over it, chilling it in a second, and I can't stop the smile on my face.

~~

I spent the next couple days playing around with my new power. The good folks at Helena High School have enough to deal with without worrying about one of the handful of us from the orphanage not showing up. They'll call the orphanage don't get me wrong, but I won't get anything more than a quick question later unless it gets worse.

I walked out to Mount Ascension Park every day, even more thankful for my new abilities in the July heat. If I try to 'freeze' the air I just act as an air conditioner, and keeping it up like that is helping with my energy reserves it seems. Also, not giving myself frostbite or freezing everything I come near helps with my control.

I practice freezing objects of different size to get an idea of the time required and the spread. At the moment a few inches around my hand is basically instant, with it slowing down the further it gets. I can offset that by 'pouring' more energy in but like with the time the energy costs increase exponentially the further it goes.

I also got an email three days after I sent him off from Mr Ceo, he's somehow already a consultant in Seattle. I assume he got some sort of backstory here right? Oh well, good for him I guess.

Maybe I should point him at pharmaceuticals or the medical industry? I might be able to use my Expert Medicine to save money or innovate there. Eh, I'll let him get established a bit there first.

It's the fourth day where something is different. I make my way to the area of the Park I've been using, and despite the nice day it's quiet on my way over.

I don't even get to where I want to be before there's a sound from not far away.

"Don't be a mountain lion, don't be a mountain lion, don't be a mountain lion." I repeat as I slowly turn.

So, good news and bad news. Good news, I got what I wanted, it's not a mountain lion. Bad news, I'm pretty sure that's a legit monster.

Pushing it's way out of the foliage is an armadillo? Except it's bigger, like the size of a large dog, and its shell is covered in spikes.

It waddles to pivot towards me, and seeing it try and turn does make it less threatening honestly.

But it does its best to negate that, beady eyes locking on to me, and I'm sure it would grinning like a devil if it could. Huh, are devils real? Questions for later.

I slam my hands down on the ground, creating a slick icy surface between us, and it seems to hesitate slightly, before it steps forward cautiously. Once it seems to realise it's basically just a cold day it stomps, breaking the ice with a huff.

Interesting.

It still slows it down, and I start circling it, creating new patches of ice.

Ugh this is going nowhere.

Letting it approach is snarls at me, and I snarl back, fuck you spike-a-dillo.

It shatters the ice between us, but as it's about to step forward I let another pulse of power out, forming ice right under the step it's about to take.

With a weird garbled yelp it slips, front legs crossing and falling to the side.

Since I don't have a spear I only really have one option, and diving forwards I slam my hand onto its neck, ice quickly spreading over its face and down its body as it trashes.

A claw catches my arm making me yell, but I keep pouring power in until the top half is an icicle and it stills.

Huffing and panting I stand up, staggering back.

Kinda glad I didn't run then. Though I'm going to have to work on my story for what happened to my arm. At least I can treat it myself.

I make a stop at a pharmacy on the way back, picking up the bits I need as I lament the loss of some of my meagre savings.

Getting back home, hiding my injury isn't very hard, and that might be a sad thing but it's not if you don't think about it. I go up to my room and lock the door, starting to clean and dress my wound. There's a fair bit of blood because it's quite long, but luckily it's not too deep, and my expert knowledge confirms that I can use the butterfly bandages I bought and that should be enough.

------------------------

I'm sorry, fucking Fairy Tail? As in the manga/anime that exists in this world as fiction? Has dear old dad conjured up some multiversal fuckery? Or is it pulling from the fiction and 'making' it real?

More importantly, what else can I get from anime and games and shit?

Wait, I can get 'familiars' too, could I roll one day and Godzilla pops out?

What's the upper limit here? Like if we're including fiction, then there would be things stronger than Chaos right?

Maybe one day I'll get to ask them.

Putting on my new glasses, I'm about to start reading school shit, but I could just super speed cram and it might not even matter, so I flick over to a fanfic I've been meaning to read. Hopefully my scroll wheel can keep up.

~~

Waking up on the fifth day since all this started, I'm thinking I should be going back to school today, well - it's Friday, so may as well wait for Monday-

"You our VIP escort?" A drawling girl's voice says from my door.

I shoot up, still only in my boxes, jumping out of bed to face them.

Huh.

In front of me is a shorter girl, maybe around my age, dark eyes, black hair in a kinda tomboy-goth haircut that I know is out of place in this city, and dressed in silver and white. She looks me up and down, and while I keep in decent shape it's apparently nothing special to her, which, ouch.

"You Jackson yeah?" She asks with the same uncaring drawl.

"Uh, Jaxen, like J-A-X-E-N, but there isn't a JackSON here, so I guess it's me you're looking for?"

She rolls her eyes, muttering something about special spellings, and I can't say I disagree but it's rude for someone else to point it out.

"Right, apparently you've been told to expect an escort to somewhere safe yeah?"

"Uh yeah, my dad, or kind of, told me. Um, do you, like know about me?"

Her eyes get a little softer at my obvious confusion.

"Right, you're new to all this, sorry. But probably less than you, we only got a description and a location from Lady Athena, as well as obviously being told to take you to Camp."

Raising my eyebrow and tilting my head a little makes her let out a prolonged sigh.

"Again, not your fault, but I swear the Gods have some kind of fetish for giving as little information as possible. Camp Half Blood is a place where Greek demigods can be safe from monsters, train, and meet their god-side siblings, as well as living there if they want. But you said your dad talked to you? So you've been claimed?"

"Um, maybe? I mean he sent me a magical basin and a letter?"

Now it's her turn to look confused, mouthing 'basin' at me.

In response I just summon the basin, letting it do its weird 2D to 3D shadow-spawn thing.

"What the fuck man?"

I snort, giving her a shrug, "I was honestly kind of hoping you'd know."

"And you said he gave you a letter as well? I can tell you that's very much not normal." She says with a narrowed gaze.

Well, I wasn't told not to share my letter with kinda scary hot girls. I just pull the letter out and hold it out to her.

She looks at it cautiously before gently taking it and opening it up.

Her eyes go wide almost immediately and her gaze shoots back up to me before she continues reading.

"Fuck." She breathes out eventually, giving me a mix of a nervous and appraising look.

"Alright, listen Jax, to be honest I don't even know what this means. I've heard of a couple people connected to primordials over time, like single digits but still. I've never heard of an actual demi child of one, even among the other pantheons."

She runs a hand down her face before slapping her cheeks.

"Okay, doesn't change anything for now, we still need to get you to Camp, so get to packing."

"Right, sure. Can I ask who 'we' is while I do?" I ask, moving to grab my old ratty duffel bag from under my bed.

"Fuck, yeah, sorry. So I'm Tia, daughter of Hermes. I'm part of Team Hound, a team that can get tasked to do a bunch of stuff. It's not exclusively full Greeks so we don't spend all of our time at Camp. Most often we're on quests around the Midwest, but we were the nearest reliable team apparently."

"Huh, so different groups actually work together? I kinda figured it was all fighting and shit?"

She snorts lightly, "Oh, it is almost all of the time, but individuals will work together. Call it fate if you want but our team knew each other before discovering our heritages. Four of six of us are regular old Greek demigods so we were together anyway. After we'd spent a few years each doing our own thing we decided to team up, keeping people safe, helping others like us, that sort of noble shit."

"God, or Gods, fuck I'm never going to get that right. This is so confusing."

She barks out a laugh, giving me a pitying look.

"Yeah, I mean you're not wrong. Basically every mythology, pantheon, monster, and more are real in some fashion, or at least were in some cases."

We lapse into silence as I finish packing, maybe one day I'll get a power that will let me understand all this shit.

~~

Tia escorts me out towards the East of town, apparently there's some overarching mind magic stuff she calls 'the mist' that allowed them to convince the staff I was leaving for proper reasons rather than with a complete magical stranger.

We get to a hotel near the airport where I meet the rest of Team Hound - have to wonder at what age they came up with that.

Opening the door is a crazy buff dude, and they don't exactly seem like show muscles.

"All good Tia?" he asks, looking me up and down as he does.

Tia gives a so-so motion with her hand but pushes him inside, dragging me behind her.

"Alright team, this here is Jax, our VIP, emphasis on V."

Looking around the room there are five others aside from me and Tia: the big buff guy, short cropped hair, and a pair of axes across his back; a like 4 foot nothing girl in a massive baggy hoody curled up in a chair; a tall brunette with the most toned body I've ever seen; a kinda wiry dude sat at the desk with a strange laptop; and a thin girl with red hair in twintails and a scar on her cheek.

That raises a few eyebrows, and they gesture for her to continue, which she does with a slightly strained smile.

"So, Jax here is an actual child of a primordial, apparently. No idea what that means for the rest of the world, but our job is the same, just be aware if he does some weird shit. Jax, do the thing."

With a small laugh I summon the basin.

"Wait, where the fuck did that coin come from?" The tall brunette asks.

"So, by achieving things I get these coins, and throwing them in the basin gets me a new power or item or whatever."

There's a solid five seconds of pure silence before the guy at the desk just huffs, "Yeah, sure, why not."

"Can we see it or is it a big secret?" asks the redhead.

I shrug and throw the coin into the basin, where it sinks as the runes start to appear.

"So, I just got the ability to summon a snowstorm. The size and ferocity probably scale with how much power I put into it, that's how my other power works. It also apparently boosts any ice based abilities used inside it."

There's another, longer period of silence.

"Soo, I take it that's not exactly normal?" I ask, glancing between everyone, who just shake their head.

Tia slaps me on the back with a laugh.

"Welp, there you have it! Let's just get everything together and make a move, the sooner the better, we have most of the continent to cross after all."

"Wait, is it really that hard? Like we're next to an airport?" I question, a wistful sigh coming out of the short girl.

"Flying on a plane is risky, the longer supernaturals are confined in one place, at least without protective wards of some kind, the more likely monsters are to be attracted. So we will take a couple flights, but we're going to get away from here first, and do it in jumps, using different methods of transport. It's something you'll learn in more detail." She explains, and I nod in thanks.

We leave Helena on I15 in a rented van, and as we cross the city line I get another pulse from my power.

The buff guy - Leroy - is driving, with Tia next to him. The next row has Dan, still on his fancy laptop, the redhead - Lucy, and Alexandra, the tall brunette. The third row has me and Emmeline, or Emma as I've been instructed to call her, with a seat in between us.

I wonder if the basin spills in a moving vehicle? Probably not right? It's magic.

As the basin appears, perfectly stable exactly as I knew would happen, Emma gives me a questioning look. I raise the Drachma in response, making her give a swift nod.

Good, efficient communication.

Your luck with your romantic life seems to be substantially increased.

I stare at the basin, my eye twitching.

I don't need to fuck right now, I need to survive!

Don't get me wrong, once I'm safe, then I'll very much appreciate this, but right now, I could really have gone for like, some ice themed spear or something?

Emma's eyes flick between the basin and me, and Lucy has spun around in her seat.

"Well?" Emma pipes up, a hint of amusement in her voice.

"I just became luckier in my romantic life." I reply with a sigh.

That gets a snort from most of the van. Fucking phenomenal.

Lucy decides I shouldn't suffer alone, "Oh hey, can you share that with Em? She gets so pouty when Alex and I cuddle!"

Emma yelps at that as more laughs ring out, firing back with, well something that I assume are words? Not sure, but her blush isn't helping her case.

Despite all the craziness that's happened over the past few days, this is nice, a small smile slipping onto my face at their back and forth.

~~

We make it all the way to Glendive, about six and a half hours away, before we finally take a break, pulling in to a fuel station. We all get out to stretch our legs, Leroy especially.

Lucy and Alexandra move away a little bit, talking in hushed voices.

Dan sits back in the van with Tia, sorting out our route, and asks me and Emma to go grab some snacks and stuff to top us up. Emma gives him a mocking salute before pulling me along to the Runnings that's just across the street.

Grabbing a trolley and heading in I try to strike up a conversation, well not much of one but still.

"So, how are we paying for this? Not to freeload more but well, broke orphan and I haven't got the ability to create precious metals yet."

She gives me a small scoff, "Don't you worry Mr VIP, I've got mortal money. We spend at least half our time in mortal communities, probably more. So, what do we need?"

In the time honoured tradition of teens doing their own shopping, we get basically 95% junk food, sharing a conspiratorial smile. The smile dims as we're heading to checkout and a hefty middle aged guy steps out into the empty aisle, eyeing us both but mostly Emma.

"Hey there sweetheart, fancy coming with me? Your boyfriend can check out while I entertain you." He says with a smirk, making Emma scoff.

"Not a fuckin chance dude, leave me alone."

The guy just smiles for another second before his face falls into a scowl.

"Ugh, you try and do it politely, what's the fucking point. Fine brat, you can watch your boy die first then."

As he finishes speaking tusks emerge from his lower jaw and his skin takes on a green tint.

Emma takes a step back as he steps forward.

"Jax, just let me handle this, most monsters aren't affected by normal weaponry." She mutters, dropping her sleeve down over her hand as I hear a faint 'clink' noise.

"You don't need to listen to her kid, you're welcome to go first!" He calls, licking his lips.

All I can get out is "Gross-" before a 'thwip' sounds from behind me, a small bolt of metal firing out and lodging by the monster's collarbone.

He lets out a roar and charges, faster than something that big should move, and smacks me into the shelves, dropping me to the floor as the wind is knocked out of me.

Emma should have run, but she hesitates at my state, and doesn't quite move in time, the monster's fist clipping her shoulder and sending her spinning with a cry.

Pushing myself up still gasping I latch my hand onto his ankle, pushing as much ice as I can. He gasps at the sudden cold, ripping his leg out of grasp and going to stomp down, before another bolt strikes his cheek, piercing through his mouth.

Luckily he's not the smartest, and while he could still stomp me he turns and brings down his fist into Emma's side, forcing out a choked scream.

As he pulls back for another hit I manage to ice under him, sending him toppling back, his head cracking the flooring.

Shoving myself forward I manage to latch onto his neck, icing it with one hand, and with the other I pull out the bolt from his cheek and drive it into his eye.

There's a short, cut off scream before he collapses into dust, sending me sprawling in the mess.

Feat Achieved - Save Emmeline Roscoe +1 Gold Drachma

Hissing as I stand and holding my ribs, I move over to Emma.

"Emma? Are you okay?" Stupid question Jax.

She groans, propping herself up, looking up at me before there's a small blush on her face.

Ah. I mean, did I even save her, felt very much like a team effort? Well, if it is from my power I'm not taking advantage, I barely know her and that makes it feel extra scummy.

"Um, yeah, I'll be okay, thanks Jax." She says, taking my offered hand up, and it's then that I notice the noise has returned.

As we stumble to the front Emma explains that it would have been the Mist, keeping people away from the supernatural.

We get checked out, both limping a bit, hopefully the Mist stops people calling the cops for domestic violence. Thankfully, with my Expert Medicine I know I'm at least okay. Some bruised ribs, bruises and scrapes on my back, but other than that I'm alright, in so small part thanks to Emma.

I take all the bags, despite her complaints, and we make out way to the van. As we arrive Alexandra goes to greet us before her eyes go wide and she rushes over.

"Oh my gods, what happened?!"

Emma huffs out a laugh, "Fuckin Ogre got the drop on us, rocked up in the aisle and charged. Slammed Jax into the shelves and slammed my ribs before VIP started icing him. We dealt with it, just a couple cracked ribs on me, don't even need to waste ambrosia I reckon." She says with a grunt as Alex helps her take a seat.

Lucy comes over to me, taking the shopping, and asking Leroy to do a quick sweep around.

Turning to Emma and seeing her pained face I ask "Do you want me to take a look? One of the things I got from my powers is like super medical knowledge?"

Her face flashes in panic before she stutters out a rejection, pulling her hoodie around herself. obviously stumbled on a mine there, so I drop it, taking a moment to feel over my own chest and make sure there's nothing serious.

Once I'm happy I summon my basin, making Lucy jump slightly and give me a scolding look.

"Heh, sorry!"

|Rare Ability|
Allows you to conjure spores that, when breathed in, cause a paralysing and immobilising effect. The stronger an opponent is in relation to you, the less they will be affected by the spores; the effect can range from knocking them out for a day to mild stiffness in limbs. The spores look like pale green clouds. If not ingested, spore clouds dissipate in 5 minutes.

------------------------

"Did you at least get something good, however that works?" She questions.

"Yeah, pretty good, I can conjure spores that if they're breathed in can stun the person or thing, though it's less effective the stronger they are compared to me."

She nods slowly at my explanation, "Hm, yeah that could come in handy. And thanks, for helping Emma."

"Of course."

After a bit to plan out and make sure Emma is comfortable we set out again, planning to make it to Bismarck, about three more hours, where we'll sleep for the night.

We settle back in the same seats for another leg of the journey.

A/N: Another new story, not sure how often updates for this will be as it's (at least at the moment) the most fickle muse, but we'll see! Hope you enjoy!
