Chapter Text
Wirt and Sara: Growing, running, and stumbling
Prologue
This is my second story based on the characters Wirt and Sara from the series “Over the Garden Wall”, which doesn't take place in the same universe as my previous story. This time, the story will address the plot of an unplanned teenage pregnancy between the couple, an idea that came to me and simply got set on my mind. Enjoy.
Chapter 1
After his adventure in the Unknown where he discovered the meaning of being brave and managed to save both himself and his younger brother, Greg, from the clutches of the Beast, Wirt finally confessed his feelings to Sara, the girl in his class whom he had been in love with for some time, and before that, had been a good friend since he had the pleasure of meeting her at the age of nine.
Wirt had confessed his feelings to Sara through a self-recorded tape in which he recited poems he had written for her and showcased his clarinet skills, particularly pieces by Chopin, his favorite composer. The day the couple listened to the tape for the first time at Wirt's house, he had been nervous but had managed to control himself. When the tape ended with a heartfelt " Goodnight, Sara", she gazed at her friend's face, filled with both nervousness and anticipation.
- "I'm very flattered, Wirt. You're very talented at this," the girl began, a slight blush rising to her cheeks. "So, are you telling me you like me as more than a friend? Do you like me, Wirt?"
- "Yes," the boy confessed honestly. "I like you a lot, Sara. And this is how I've wanted to show it. You're very special to me, and I really enjoy being with you. Will you be my girlfriend, Sara?" Wirt asked as he knelt down on one knee.
Sara stared at him. Wirt had always been a very sweet and respectful boy to her, and she had to admit that she felt a lot of affection for him, more than for any other boy. Finally, she spoke to answer her friend's question.
- “Yes, Wirt” – she said in an excited voice, like a little girl opening her Christmas presents – “I love you and yes, I want to be your girlfriend”.
Wirt's eyes sparkled as his friend hugged him affectionately, followed by a kiss on the cheek. He couldn't believe it; she had agreed to be his girlfriend. He felt like the luckiest guy in the world. The now-couple remained embraced, feeling filled with mutual love.
- "I promise I will always take care of you and treat you with respect and affection, Sara. I have never felt for anyone what I feel now for you," Wirt said.
- “Me neither, Wirt. You're a very sweet boy, and I feel lucky that you're the first person to fall in love with me” – Sara replied.
The couple left Wirt's house hand in hand, enjoying the autumnal scenery that enveloped their quiet neighborhood. In the yard, Greg was playing with his frog, Jason Funderburker, and with their neighbor Mrs. Parette's cat, Snaffy. When the boy saw his older brother holding Sara's hand, he smiled and ran toward them.
- "Is Sara the bee your girlfriend now, Wirt?" the boy asked.
Wirt blushed as Sara let out a giggle.
- "Yes, Greg, your brother and I are dating now," the girl said proudly.
- "Yes, Greg, just like you heard," said Wirt, trying not to sound too stern to his little brother.
Greg smiled at Wirt and congratulated him on confessing his feelings to Sara. The couple then went for a walk through the city, returning to Wirt's house for dinner with Greg and his parents, Jonathan (who was actually Wirt's stepfather; his biological father, Patrick, had died when the boy was only seven) and Whitney. The meal was delicious: breaded chicken breasts with French fries and a shredded carrot salad. After dinner, Wirt finally spoke:
- “Mom, Jonathan, Sara and I want to tell you that we are now boyfriend and girlfriend”.
Jonathan got up from the table and hugged his stepson, telling him how proud he was of him, and also congratulated the girl for agreeing to go out with Wirt. Whitney, meanwhile, smiled confidently at her son and congratulated him as well. Greg, however, asked a question that, although innocent, sounded a bit off.
- "Does that mean you're going to kiss and all that? How disgusting!" he exclaimed.
Wirt looked back at his brother and said:
- “Greg, you'll understand when you grow up. Love is the most beautiful thing in the world”.
- "More beautiful than frogs and candy?" Greg asked with a grin.
- “Yes, Greg, much nicer than that”.
- “Greg, when you grow up you'll discover that you feel something very special for a girl, or maybe for another boy” – Sara added.
- "Can you fall in love with a boy when you're a boy?" Greg asked, amazed.
- "Yes, Greg, just like one girl can fall in love with another girl. Every person is special and different," Sara replied.
- "That's amazing! I'll tell the rock and Jason Funderburker!" Greg said happily and left the dining room towards his room.
- "That's my Greg," Jonathan said. "And you, Wirt, congratulations on your new girlfriend. Just remember, don't do anything you might regret; you're still very young."
- "Don't worry, sir, we will both be responsible for everything we do," Sara replied.
- “Yes, Jonathan” – said Wirt, who never referred to him as “dad” – “I will be responsible and will always take care of Sara, no matter what”.
After dinner, Wirt offered to walk Sara home, which was five blocks from his own. The couple left Wirt's house, and on the porch, after gazing into each other's eyes, the teenagers mustered their courage and shared their first kiss. It was simple, without tongue or anything like that, but it filled them with a beautiful feeling that coursed through their entire being. Hand in hand, they walked to Sara's house where they finally said their goodbyes.
When Sara entered her house, her older sister, Isabelle, noticed she seemed quite happy and approached her to ask what had happened. She knew Sara was friends with Wirt and suspected it had something to do with him.
- “Oh, little sister, why are you so happy?”
- "Wirt and I are officially dating!" Sara exclaimed, beaming with joy.
- "Congratulations! I knew Wirt was the perfect guy for you!" her sister replied.
- “Wirt is very special to me, Isabelle. I'm so happy that he's in love with me and had the courage to confess it”.
Just then, Sara's mother, Phoebe, came into the room accompanied by Sara's seven-year-old sister, Rochelle. Sara was the second of four children: Isabelle, herself, Rochelle, and Mikey, the only boy, who was just two years old. Phoebe asked her two older daughters what they were talking about, and Sara said that Wirt had asked her to be his girlfriend and she had accepted. Her mother congratulated her and told her that she could invite Wirt over for dinner anytime she wanted to introduce him to the family.
- "Does Sara have a boyfriend, Mom?" asked little Rochelle.
- "Yes, daughter, your sister is growing up," replied her mother.
- "How lovely, I also want to have a boyfriend when I grow up," Rochelle said.
- "That's still a long way off, little sister," Isabelle reminded her.
Sara was proud that her family didn't shy away from discussing these topics. She still fondly remembered how her mother and older sister had helped her when she got her first period at age eleven. Being able to share the fact that she now had a boyfriend with them made her feel confident and proud of herself. That evening, Sara also told the news to her father, Arnold. He congratulated his daughter and asked her to be careful and never let Wirt hurt her in any way. Sara knew her boyfriend was incapable of even thinking about such a thing, but she thanked her father for his advice nonetheless. And so, that night Sara went to sleep happy and fortunate in her new relationship.
Meanwhile, Wirt was writing a new poem, inspired by his success in getting Sara to be his girlfriend, which he would add to his growing list of original compositions. He also felt peace and joy that his family didn't judge him for the things he was passionate about. At school, Wirt was one of the best in his class, although he did have some weaknesses, such as gym class. At the beginning of the school year, a boy named Jason Funderberker (not to be confused with Greg's frog, whose name is Funderburker) had joined the class. Wirt initially saw Jason as a rival for Sara's affections, since Jason was somewhat more sociable despite his own flaws, such as his raspy voice and short stature. However, the events following his adventure in the Unknown had made him leave behind that feeling of inferiority that tormented him, and he and Jason had become good friends, especially after Sara made it very clear that she was not interested in him, whereupon Jason soon found that he had a lot in common with another girl in the class named Sandra Wellington, and the two began dating soon after.
Sara, meanwhile, was also a bright student, and her physical prowess, honed through her membership in the school's wrestling club, made her stand out. She had met Wirt when they were both nine years old; she had moved to the quiet suburb of Aberdale, Massachusetts, with her family from Mexico City when her parents were able to find good jobs in the United States. Sara's parents manufactured and distributed clothing for various American markets, while Isabelle, their eldest daughter, worked as a barista at the Blue Spruce Coffee Shop, one of the most popular spots in downtown Aberdale.
In the following days, the news that Wirt and Sara were now a couple spread like wildfire throughout Crossroads High School. Jason congratulated Wirt on finally winning Sara's heart, as he knew Wirt was head over heels for her. The class as a whole was happy for the new couple; it was more than obvious that they were perfect for each other.
Within the school, however, there was one person who harbored a deep dislike for Wirt and Sara, fueled by her own prejudices. This was Kirsten Cameron, a senior who considered herself the most stylish and popular girl in the school. She was essentially a spoiled brat who spent her time belittling and bullying those she perceived as "inferior" or "outcast." If you're wondering whether Kirsten had ever had a boyfriend, you might be surprised to learn that she had, but she usually ended up breaking up with them for various reasons. Kirsten also loved to gossip about the sex lives of other students, keeping her own personal list of "sluts", and she particularly mocked girls who got pregnant unintentionally, making their lives miserable at school. No one dared to stand up to her for fear of retaliation.
Kirsten saw Wirt as a weakling who would never amount to anything, while Sara, in her eyes, was a girl who was only at school to fulfill diversity and inclusion policies, undeserving of her position. She would never admit it, but the truth was that Kirsten was secretly head over heels in love with Sara, yet pretended to hate her to keep up appearances. Kirsten's family was very conservative and would clearly never accept that she was attracted to someone of the same sex; in their world, that was indecent and degenerate.
On the Saturday of that first week that Wirt and Sara were officially dating, they had their first date at none other than the Blue Spruce café, where they ate hamburgers with fries and a chocolate milkshake with two straws to share. They chatted, laughed, and participated in karaoke, where Wirt, a little off-key, sang that eighties ballad by Starship that had his girlfriend's name on it, and to his surprise, the whole café applauded and congratulated him. Isabelle, who was on her shift as a barista, watched fondly as her younger sister enjoyed her boyfriend's company.
The months continued to pass, and with them, the love between Wirt and Sara grew stronger and stronger. Both were in the throes of adolescence, and their raging hormones made them long to be together and show each other their feelings through displays of affection like kisses, caresses, and hugs. When they were alone, in private, they fantasized about each other while pleasuring themselves, letting themselves be carried away by the nice and pleasurable sensations that coursed through their bodies. At school, they had already received lessons about sexuality and the use of contraception, knowing that at that age most students were already sexually active. At first, Wirt was embarrassed by the topic, but he slowly accepted that it was something natural, nothing to be ashamed of. One day, while Wirt and Sara were sitting on a park bench eating ice cream, the girl suddenly said:
- “Hey, Wirt, don't you think it's time to...um, you know... do it ?”
- "Do what, darling?" Wirt retorted.
- “You know about having our first time…giving ourselves to each other” – Sara said with a slight blush on her face.
Wirt froze, as if his brain had suffered a critical system failure, and felt his entire face turn red as he realized what his girlfriend meant. He swallowed hard and, stammering, began to speak.
- “Are you sure we're ready to do that? Isn't it too soon? We've only been together six months”.
- “Yes, Wirt, I'm sure. I love you, and I'd love for us to show our love that way. We already know how to protect ourselves, and I'm sure you'd love it too. It's the magic of love, Wirt; our bodies crave it. Of course, if you don't feel ready yet, I won't force you; this decision has to be mutual”—the girl replied firmly.
- Um… Wirt paused, lost in thought. He couldn't deny that he desired Sara and fantasized about her in those ways. The fact that she was the one suggesting it flattered him greatly and made him realize how much she cared for him. So, finally, he agreed.
- “Okay, Sara. But where do we do it? At my house, Jonathan and Greg are always there, and at yours, it's your mom and your sisters”.
- "Thanks to my sister, I know a guy who would lend us a room in the hotel where he works; if we give him a small amount of money, he'll let us in without ID or anything," Sara said.
- "Wow, had you already planned this?" her boyfriend asked.
- "Yes, you know, we have to build bridges to the heart," Sara said with a few laughs. "How about Friday after school, Wirt?"
- “Of course, babe. Just give me the location and we'll meet there on Friday”.
- “With pleasure, Wirt”.
The couple shared a passionate kiss, sealing their commitment to take their relationship to the next level. Wirt felt nervous and anxious, hoping to satisfy his girlfriend and that they would both enjoy a moment they would remember for the rest of their lives.
From afar, in the park, Kirsten watched the couple with jealousy. She was desperate to be with Sara, and seeing her so comfortable with Wirt frustrated her. She would find out what they talked about and what they were planning. If she couldn't have Sara by her side, she would make sure to ruin Sara's life, and her boyfriend's too.
- "Sara Brundige, why can't you be by my side?" Kirsten said desperately.
Just then, a boy from her class, of French origin, named Tristan Beaucaire appeared behind Kirsten, scaring her.
- "Hey Kirsten, what are you doing?" Tristan asked.
- "Aaaaaaah! You're stalking me!" Kirsten shouted, agitated.
- “No, no, that's not my intention, I was just interested to see why you're so interested in Wirt and Sara”.
- “That's none of your business, baguette boy. Why don't you go to the cafeteria for those chocolate cookies you like so much?”
- "Do you like Sara? Or Wirt? Or both?" Tristan asked her.
- "I'm telling you again, it's none of your business! Go away!" the girl shouted.
- “Okay, I'll go, but just remember this: There's a fine line between love and hate. “Good luck, Kirsten”.
And Tristan left.
Sara put the plan into action. She contacted her sister Isabelle's friend, a young man whose parents owned the Benin Hotel, named Mark Carmichael. Sara explained to him what she wanted to do.
- “So, do you want me to lend you a room on Friday so you can be alone with your boyfriend?”
- "Yes, just don't tell anyone, especially not Isabelle," the girl replied.
- "Give me 50 dollars and I'll lend you room 402, it's very well fixed up and perfect for beginners," Mark replied with a smile.
- “Alright, here they are, let's keep this between us”.
Sara headed home, but on the way she ran into Kirsten, who looked at her suspiciously.
- “Hi, Sara. Where are you going looking so happy?”
- "I didn't know you cared where I go, Cameron. Don't you have better things to do, like bothering the other girls as you usually do?" Sara retorted sarcastically.
- “I know you're just jealous because I've always been more popular than you. How's your relationship with the poetry and clarinet guy going? I bet you haven't even made it to second base yet” – Kirsten said mockingly.
- “That's none of your business. Why do you care so much about what we do?”
- “Oh, it's just that I like seeing how jealous you are of my level and popularity”.
- "I'm not jealous of that, Cameron. I feel good about myself, and that's all that matters to me," Sara replied.
- "Well, if you say so, darkie", Kirsten said, clearly intending to provoke Sara.
- “I've heard worse, Kirsten. Don't even bother, I'm not going to let you provoke me, see you around, bye”.
And Sara left, leaving Kirsten without the last word, and making her feel powerless because she couldn't confess her feelings to Sara, for fear of social and family rejection.
The week flew by, and finally, Friday arrived. After school, Wirt and Sara left hand in hand. They always walked home, but this time, after telling their parents they were going to a video game meet-up with friends, they headed to the Benin Hotel, where Mark was waiting for them and let them in without the other employees noticing. He gave them the key to room 402 and told them to enjoy their time there. The room was lovely, with red upholstery that Wirt loved and a large bed that looked incredibly inviting. Wirt and Sara looked into each other's eyes, but before anything else could happen, Wirt nervously asked:
- “Wait, Sara. Did you bring condoms?”
- “Yes, Wirt, Mark also lent me a pack”.
- “Okay, then I guess um… we can start?” – Wirt asked, his face growing increasingly flushed.
- "Of course, love," Sara replied in a sultry tone, and proceeded to kiss his lips while caressing the back of his neck with her fingers.
This quickly ignited passion between them; their clothes fell to the floor: Wirt's jeans, then Sara's school skirt, then everything they were wearing underneath. They lay down on the bed and finally let themselves be carried away by their instincts until, after several minutes of joining their bodies into one in a somewhat clumsy but very tender and beautiful way, they collapsed, feeling a wave of simultaneous pleasure run through their bodies and release what they wanted to let out. They remained embraced on the bed under the sheets, looking at each other with a smile from ear to ear and with more love in their hearts.
- "That was incredible, Sara," Wirt said, his voice trembling but satisfied.
- "Yes, it was, love. I've never felt like this before, I feel like the happiest girl in the world," his girlfriend replied.
- “I'm glad you liked it so much. For a first time, I think we did pretty well, don't you think, darling?” – Wirt asked.
- “Most definitely. Thank you, Wirt, I'll never forget this moment”.
Then they kissed and got out of bed. They got dressed again and washed their faces so as not to arouse suspicion. They left the room and met Mark in the hallway, to whom they handed the key.
- “You two had a good time, right?”
- “Yes, without a doubt. Remember, not a word to my sister or anyone else” – Sara said.
- "Sure, anyway, she's done the same thing" Mark said, laughing.
Sara was surprised to learn that her older sister wasn't so innocent after all, but she didn't say anything. Finally, they arrived at Wirt's house and said goodbye with a kiss.
- “Thanks for this, Wirt”.
- “You're welcome, Sara. You know I love you”.
Wirt entered his house, where Greg was watching television with his frog, Jason. It was a show about a little blue dog having adventures playing with her sister and parents.
- "Hi, Wirt, how did it go with Sara?" the boy asked.
- “Much better than I expected” – replied Wirt, his voice filled with excitement as he recalled the wonderful feeling of making love with his girlfriend for the first time, although of course, he couldn't tell that to his younger brother.
- "How does it feel when you have a girlfriend?" Greg asked.
- “It feels like you're on cloud nine, where all you want is to be close to her and spend all your time together”.
- “That sounds really nice, I'm going to tell the rock to create a new rock fact”.
- “Great idea, Greg. By the way, I wonder what's for dinner”.
- "Oh, Mom's going to make hot dogs with grilled sausages and pico de gallo, and Dad's going to bake a cake because, remember, it's Mom's birthday tomorrow", Greg said.
- “That sounds great. In the meantime, I'm going to study; I have a rather difficult physics homework”.
And so, Wirt went to his room, where he took out his cell phone and texted Sara to see if she had arrived home yet. She replied affirmatively, saying that her family was going to her grandparents' house for dinner and wouldn't be back until Sunday. Wirt told her to have a good time with her loved ones and sent her a picture of himself with the message, "Thanks for today". Then, he turned on his laptop to start his homework and listen to his music playlist, choosing songs that reminded him of the magical moment he had shared with Sara just a few hours earlier.
