Chapter 1: One

Chapter Text

Jackie grew up under the sheltering of her parents. She had to be their perfect daughter. Problem was, she wasn’t perfect. Far from it. She tried her best, though. Oh, how she tried.

“Jax,” Shauna’s voice broke through her haze. Her voice was smooth, yet sharp edged. Soft, yet graveled when you really listened. Jackie always listened.

“Hm? What is it, Shipman?” Jackie questioned back, having spaced out. She was sure it was because she hadn’t eaten yet that day, but it’s fine. She didn’t need to eat.

“What should I wear? I mean, this isn’t a fancy party, but it’s still a party. Should I just wear what I normally do, or something else?” Shauna asked, shuffling through her clothes impatiently.

“Wear the boob dress,” Jackie suggested, although when she said it, it came off as more of a demand. She always came off that way. Maybe it was because she was the captain of the Yellowjackets. Maybe she just sucked at tone.

“The boob dress? Really?” Shauna countered, clearly turned off by the idea. She had always been a bit self conscious, hiding under her flannels like they were protective walls.

“Mhm, wear the boob dress. The red complements your complexion, and it shows off your figure nicely,” she offered back, trying to sound lighter. She gave a smirk as well to play it off. Keep up the face.

“Fine, I guess,” Shauna breathed out, grabbing it off the rack, “I’m not sure why I listen to you though,” she flashed a smirk in reciprocation, which made Jackie’s heart thump. Damnit. Not making it easy here, Shipman.

“You listen to me because you know I know best,” Jackie retorted playfully, trying to appear cocky, “I’m the most knowledgeable when it comes to looking good, obviously,” she cracked shortly after, laughing softly.

“Uh huh, sure you are,” Shauna laughed with her, her laugh like a quiet hum. If it were a song, it’d be Jackie’s favorite. It probably was, if we’re being sincere. Jackie stared at Shauna intently as their giggles subsided, her eyes trained on every curve and line of her face. Shauna had gentle features, a kind smile and warm irises. She also had a defined bone structure, her cheekbones and jaw indefinitely beautiful. Her nose had a small bump in it, something Jackie appreciated from her side. She was always by her side.

“I am!” Jackie snorted, throwing a small pillow at the brunette. It thumped against Shauna’s arm, and she quickly turned towards the bed where Jackie sat.

“Oh, so that’s how we’re playing it?” Shauna raised an eyebrow, placing the dress on top of the rack. The curve of her lips so damn perfect, god she just wishes she could—

Fwop!

“Hey!” Jackie whined when the pillow returned to her with a steady velocity. It hit her right in the face because her thoughts had wandered, “Not fair! I wasn’t paying attention.”

“You were looking right at me, Jax. It was totally fair game,” Shauna grinned, stepping closer to the bed.

“Was not, Shipman!” She pouted, squeezing the pillow close to her abdomen. It was hot. Shauna arrived at the edge of the bed, standing over Jackie.

“Here, why don’t you throw it back? Hit me as hard as you can, since it ‘wasn’t fair.’”

Jackie swallowed harshly, gripping the pillow tightly. She could barely move under Shauna’s gaze.

“Come on, or I’ll take the offer back,” Shauna prompted, crossing her arms over her chest. Jackie snapped out of it briefly, weakly tossing the pillow at Shauna’s head.

“What was that, Jackie?” Shauna chuckled, picking the pillow back up. She then plopped onto the bed next to her, amusement clear on her face.

“I-,” Jackie began, choking a little, “I didn’t want to throw it hard. I didn’t want to hurt you, duh,” she huffed, turning away from Shauna. Shauna sighed softly, setting the pillow aside.

“Why won’t you look at me?” Shauna asked, her voice lower than normal. Jesus, Jackie might explode like this.

“You need to get dressed,” Jackie redirected, turning her eyes back to her. “We’ve got a party to go to. Go on, go put the dress on.”

“Ugh! You’re so not fun,” Shauna smiled, getting back up from the full bed. She walked back over to the clothes rack, soft thuds reaching Jackie’s ears after each step. Shauna took the dress back in her hands after removing her shirt.

Jackie, against her better discretion, looked at Shauna’s body. Her chest was bigger than Jackie’s, her hips thicker and her waist toned yet appealing to look at. Shauna removed her shorts next, revealing her thighs. Jackie looked away.

Shauna finished putting on the dress, opting to put a jacket on over it because of the temperature. Jackie knew she decided to because of her insecurity also. She wrapped up by pulling on some boots and checking her hair.

“Good to go, Ship?” Jackie asked, standing from the bed and smoothing out her skirt.

“Yep, I’m good. Let’s go,” Shauna answered, grabbing her small bag with her keys, wallet, and essentials in it. Jackie did the same.

They got into Shauna’s Ford, buckling their seatbelts before Shauna pulled out of the driveway. Some sort of rock song Jackie had never heard played on the radio, and Shauna nodded her head a bit to it. Jackie liked pop music, well, that’s what she thought she liked. It was what she was supposed to like.

“Why do you like this garbage?” Jackie ended the silence between them, looking out the window of the car. The sky was a deep rosy blue, the sun setting. The stars were beginning to blink, darkness seeping down.

“First off, it’s not garbage,” Shauna started, tapping the steering wheel, “And second, because it’s good. You really should try to like it.”

“Why?” Jackie scoffed, but the sound was lighthearted.

“Because you’re always in my damn car,” Shauna reminded her, “You can drive just fine, but you always ask me for a ride. That’s why.”

“I guess that does make sense, huh?” Jackie smiled softly, shifting her eyes over to Shauna. Shauna kept her eyes on the road, checking her mirrors every now and then. She continued to tap her fingers to the song, enjoying it. Jackie could hardly hear it over it her own heartbeat.

The drive wasn’t long, maybe ten to fifteen minutes. They heard the sound of music and drunk teenagers from a decent distance away. Shauna pulled off in the dirt, trees looming over the area. She turned the car off, unbuckling her seatbelt.

Jackie had spaced out again. She really should’ve eaten something.

“Jackie,” Shauna touched her arm lightly, “We’re here, you know,” she informed her, pinching gently.

“Oh,” Jackie came back down to earth, “Yeah, okay,” she replied, undoing her own seatbelt. Shauna withdrew her hand, opening the car door and getting out. Jackie followed suit.

The two girls walked into the heart of the party, shoulders bumping occasionally. Jackie was hyper aware of each brush. Shauna seemed to not notice.

Dozens of teens filled the space. Many holding red solo cups, a decent amount flicking cigarettes as well. Jackie saw people she recognized, others unknown to her. Her head was pounding already, and she hadn’t even drank anything yet. Rough night incoming.

They got some drinks, some cheap booze that Jackie was sure no one could like. Everyone drank it though, wanting to be ‘cool.’ She enjoyed the burn as it went down. It was distracting.

Jackie was standing near a trunk with Shauna when a male voice came up behind her, hands snaking around her waist. Jeff.

“Hey, baby,” Jeff breathed against her neck, smelling like alcohol and some sort of cologne that was no longer pleasant.

“Hi,” Jackie responded, leaning back into him. His hands were big and clumsy, invading. She wished he wasn’t like this.

“How are you, hm?” Jeff questioned, kissing her neck.

“I’m fine. How are you?” she responded, glancing over at Shauna. Shauna wasn’t looking at her. She seemed to be somewhere far away. Always so far.

“I’m good. Better now that you’re here,” he smirked against her skin, his fingers crawling upwards.

“Not now, Jeff,” Jackie hissed, grabbing his hands and pushing them down. “You know I don’t like that,” she whispered harshly, turning towards him.

“I know, I know. Sorry,” he smiled stupidly. Jackie rolled her eyes, puffing before returning the smile. She gave him a quick kiss, as if to show her forgiveness. He wanted more, she could tell. She didn’t.

“I’m gonna get another drink,” she heard Shauna mutter, before she stomped away. What’s her problem?

“Hey, hey, look at me,” Jeff tried to redirect her. Jackie felt sick when she heard his voice, not to mention the alcohol mixing with nothing but bile in her stomach. She winced at the feeling boiling in her abdomen, but tried to ignore it.

“What’s up?” Jackie forced a generous grin, wrapping her arms around his neck.

“Just want you, that’s all,” he gazed down at her with hungry eyes. Jesus, boys really are always horny.

“Maybe later, Jeff. For now, let’s just enjoy the party. ‘Kay?” Jackie suggested, wanting to get his mind off of sex. It seemed to work as much as it could.

Shauna had disappeared somewhere, probably finding Tai. Jackie was sure Van was with Tai, so they were likely all talking. Lottie was definitely among the partygoers too, Laura Lee with her if she was even there. Natalie was getting high, Jackie knew for certain, because Nat never gave up a chance to do just that. Fucking junkie.

Jackie wished Shauna hadn’t left. She strongly disliked being alone with Jeff, even if he was her boyfriend.

Jackie and Jeff danced a bit, the latter twirling her a few times. She felt like she was gonna throw up. She might.
