Chapter 1: Prologue

Chapter Text

The winding backroads of northern Vermont stretched out for miles. The recent glimpse of a vision containing who Wednesday thought might be her long lost aunt, was quickly filed away so as to continue on her current and most pressing matter. She glanced over at her Uncle Fester, who doesn't appear to have noticed vision happening. She smirked and stored the journal for later.

Enid’s phone, now in her possession for the time being, made a noise, signaling that her once adamant stalker, Agnes had reached out. Inside the chat between the two was a set of coordinates of the night cam that Enid’s picture was taken from. Thanking her, she, with Thing’s help, placed them into the maps app on the phone and they set a course towards it.

The drive was relatively quiet. Minus the few conversations between Fester and Thing. All of which, Wednesday drowned out all of it. It took them the next 4 hours before arriving near the small clearing. She was out of the side car before Fester could bring the bike to a complete stop.

“Always in a rush,” Fester sighed out with a laugh.

“Of course,” Wednesday replied curtly, “I promised her I’d find her, and that is what I’m doing. First, though, I need to see how fresh the tracks are here, to see how long ago she came through.”

Fester came up behind her nodding, “You said the trail cam that caught her picture was from last night, right?” She nodded, “Well, using that logic we follow the tracks that she left to find the next possible direction.”

Wednesday silently took in the information, even though she already was aware, she wouldn’t interrupt him. She followed the tracks, carefully, even picking up the faint scent of Enid’s strawberry shampoo that she uses.

I knew that scent was strong but I didn't think it would linger that much,” She thought.

She followed the trail northwards for about a mile before losing it. Fester wasn’t too far behind on the bike, siding up next to her when she stopped.

“I lost the trail, but I believe she’s still heading towards the border.” She said monotonly.

“If across the border is where your wolf went, that too is where we shall go as well,” Fester proclaimed, starting up the bike and tearing out of the woods.

She shot him a menacing glance, but said nothing. Because even though she wouldn’t admit it out loud, the family curse had found its way into her black heart, and made it beat wildly for her missing roommate. It took her until her vision of Enid’s grave to recognize the symptoms. She wanted to ignore it. Hoping that if she stayed away, the vision, and curse in tandem, would fade. Seeing her wolf in the arms of another the majority of this last semester was torture and not in a fun way. Then the whole body swap fiasco happened. She still felt the curse, but she also hoped that Enid, in her body, didn't feel it happen to her.

Hearing Bruno speaking to his secret girlfriend back home was enough for her to want to see how much destruction, and how sharp Enid’s claws were. But she knew that if she did, Enid would be the one in trouble, not her. So, she, unfortunately, had to take a more passive route, but still got a threat thrown in his direction as well.

Out of everything in that whole experience, her wolfing was a stand out feature. She hadn’t thought it would happen, though almost killing Tyler did have its perks, even if she was called off at the last second.

Fester had them cross into Canada at an unpatrolled area before heading towards a small gas station to refill the bike.

Wednesday had felt the first of the hunger pangs set in about an hour or so previous, however they were now to the point where they could no longer be ignored. So, while Fester refueled the bike, she walked inside the station. She first grabbed a water, then walked down the isles to grab a small snack. However, the collection of processed sticks of seasoned meat caught her eye and she felt her mouth water instantly.

She shook her head quickly after catching herself and grabbed about 10 of them before paying, “ I must have been around Enid too long, her meat eating habits seem to have rubbed off on me.” She muttered while exiting.

Fester was finished and waiting by the time she climbed back into the sidecar and started munching on the sticks of meat, and they set off once more.
