Work Text:

Rimitti was the most recent in the long line of assistants that has worked for Vox. Having been picked up after only a few days after their arrival in Pentagram City, they were desperate when they learnt that there were exterminations that happened here, and the next one was set to arrive in only a few days. When offered protection by the Vee’s in exchange for their labour, he was all too eager to accept. After all, this work wasn’t that much different from what they were doing before they died anyway. Even the information gathering on the radio demon, while weird, was not that unusual for them.

To be completely honest, when this task was assigned to them only a few days after Extermination Day, they didn’t get all the fuss about the overlord being back. However, after hearing all the stories, and soliloquies from Vox himself every time the name was so much as whispered, they had a better understanding of the rivalry that existed between Vox and Alaine. And why it was a part of their job to present any news and updates that are collected directly to their boss as soon as possible.

It is one of the easiest parts of their job and the one part that is the most annoying. Most of the time the Radio Demon tends to linger around the Princess’ hotel, venturing out only to attend overlord meetings and visit the cannibal area of Pentagram City. The only down side to this task is when they have to report all these happening to Vox. He can watch her through his camera all he likes, but they can never know her intentions. That is where Rimitti comes in. Playing others to pay others to give up whatever information they can on what Alaine is doing, what she is saying and, most importantly apparently, is she asking anything about Vox.

Unfortunately, reporting back to their boss that the deer overlord has not enquired about him leads to him going on for hours talking about her, as if he did not have a business to run. If not for the strange duet battle that the two had, Rimitti would be certain that Alaine did not remember the TV overlord and their rivalry. While Alaine seemed to be all Vox thinks about day in and day out, every move calculated in a way that he thinks would make him look best to her, Alaine doesn’t appear to care for him in any way at all that wasn’t putting Vox in the place she designated him.

Rimitti hates Alaine on the principle that they are the one having to be subjected to this. How Valentino and Velvette put up with this for years before Alaine disappeared, they can only guess.

So on one Sunday afternoon, when Rimitti is collecting their weekly report from various informants on the Demon, they are shocked at one tidbit they hear. And they know that Vox is gonna lose his absolute shit when they tell him. Lucifer damn it, just when they thought they would be able to go the month without Vox ripping them or some other employee to bit over the fucking stupid deer woman. The pigeon demon let out a frustrated coo, kicking at any nearby trash, and spent most of the walk back to Vee Tower dragging their feet, trying to prolong their meeting with Vox. However all too soon they found themselves standing on the other side of Vox’s desk.

“So… What is the latest on the Radio Demon?”

It was impossible for Rimitti to tell if their boss was excited for anything new they might bring, or anticipating that everything would be the same as it had been before. For a moment, they contemplated lying, saying that everything was the same and nothing had been out of the ordinary for the Radio Demon this week. But it would only be a matter of time before the gossip rags got ahold of the story and blew it way out of proportion. Thus making Vox’s rage blow out of proportion. No, it was better for them to tell him the truth now and get ahead of the story themselves.

“Well, Boss… There hasn’t really been any change. She goes about the Princess’ hotel and she takes her trips into Cannibal town once or twice a week. Nothing new there.” Rimitti clears their throat and gulps, they spared a quick glance at Vox, seeing his initial reaction to the news. Their boss sits in the very same position he has since speaking. Elbows on desk and clawed fingers unlaced resting on his chin–or where his chin would be, had he had a regular shaped face.

“However, reports have been that the Radio Demon was seen out… shopping with Angel Dust. Reports say they were acting… friendly.”

This got Vox's attention. His screen glitches out multiple times before coming clear again. His eyes staring straight down into the soul he owns and making Rimitti coo in fright and hide behind the clipboard in his hands. Hand lowering and clawing lines into the desk between them. However, Vox’s voice sounds to be calm when he speaks.

“Oh? ӺɍĪēꞤđꞨ with Ⱥꞥ₲ēŁ đɄꞩȾ?” Vox glitches again on the name then starts to make a strange, high-pitched noise. It's only during the few times that he manages to be clear that Rimitti can finally see that he is laughing. His laugh borders on psychopathic and Rimitti starts to eye the door, wondering if they will be able to make it through and into the elevator with their spine intact. Vox laughter is only getting crazier, the static and glitches somehow projecting violence.

Just as Rimitt was about to make a break for it, Vox goes silent. They look to see the media demon hunched over his desk, panting heavily.

“ȾħȺⱦ ɃīȾȼĦ!.”

Rimitti stands a few feet behind their boss, on a street corner so near the entrance of cannibal town it cannot be a coincidence. After their last Alaine-report to Vox the media demon has been even more frantic than usual in finding out information on the newly returned demon.

They didn’t know who his source was, they were darn good. It wasn't even fifteen minutes of waiting before the Radio Demon herself could be seen walking in their direction. Angel Dust by her side. The two were talking animately, hands waving about in big gestures as the two laughed with each other. It would almost be a sweet display, if not for the fact it was hell's most famous porn star and the demon known for killing and torturing her victims on the radio.

Vox didn't have any qualms about confronting them though, stepping into their path without a thought. He smiles brightly at the women, even as they both stop in their tracks to frown at him.

“Alaine! And Angel Dust! Why, I didn’t know they two of you were close. Though I guess you are both involved with the Princess and her hotel, so maybe it’s more surprising that The Radio Demon and The Porn Star of Hell would have enough in common for them to be… friends.” The last word is said with a tight smile and a meaningful look at Alaine. And Rimitti gets the impression that there is much more to their history than what they have been told. It appears to them now that Vox is more angry that they said that Alaine and Angel were friendly than anything else.

“Vincent, Vincent, Vincent.” Alaine’s voice is dripping in condescension and pity. “And you say that I am of the past. Does your lover know you hold such views? He ought to know about your close-mindedness.”

Angel must have a better grasp on what she is talking about than Rimitti, because the taller demon ducks her head into the shoulder of her companion to try and muffle her giggles. Fortunate for their pride, Vox does not understand what she means either.

“What they fuck does that mean?” He laughs the question out, confused. “What Val got to do with any of this shit?” The second question comes out more angry and desperate. It’s clear that Alaine knows very well how to get on Vox’s nerves that it only takes a few vague words for him to completely abandon his entire plan on how to get information out of her. He is already coming undone, when she hasn’t said more than five sentences.

Alaine clicks her tongue disapprovingly, hooking an arm through Angel’s and using it to steer them around the two demons confronting them. As she passes Vox she gives a few pats to his shoulder with the tips of her fingers. “Ah, Vincent, still as slow on the uptake as ever. Not to worry, I’m sure you will get it eventually.”

They watch as the two women continue on their way, walking without a care in the world, as though a very powerful overlord had not just stopped them in the street with plans to threaten them. Rimiiti supposes that the plan was derailed a bit, and Alaine definitely left with the upper hand. They would wonder if this is how meetings between Alaine and their boss typically go, if they had not turned at the sound of an animalist growl coming from Vox. Facing him just in time to see, but not stop, as the enraged media demon lunges at them with wires affray.
