Chapter Text
Wonwoo sat in the carriage, a frown on his face.
Today was the day that they go and visit his father.
Except Wonwoo was currently going alone.
Mingyu got called in for a quick meeting, promising Wonwoo that he would meet him there as soon as he could.
The prince almost didn’t want Wonwoo to go without him.
But Wonwoo understood and went ahead, promising that he was going to be okay on his own for a few.
At least he hoped he would be okay.
The carriage pulled up into the kingdom. Wonwoo quickly noticing how gloomy it was here compared to the Kim’s.
The carriage came to a stop in front of the palace where his mother stood waiting for him.
He got out, smiling as his mother walked up to him, pulling him in for a hug. She squeezed him tightly.
“Oh, my sweet baby, how I have missed you deeply.” She pulled back to look him over. “Has your husband been treating you well?”
Wonwoo smiled, nodding his head. “Very well. He is the living image of the prince charming you hear about in fairytales.”
His mother let out a laugh, shaking her head. “Well I’m glad to hear that. Let’s hope it’ll last as the days go by.”
Wonwoo frowned at that.
She took his hand in hers. “Your father is out right now but he’ll be back soon. Let’s go have some tea and catch up, yes?”
Wonwoo nodded. Hopefully Mingyu would be here by the time his father was back.
He followed his mother inside, his guards following close behind them.
She glanced back. “You have tight security, hmm?”
Wonwoo shrugged. “Mingyu wants me to be safe, in case of danger.”
His mother laughed. “Ah, no need. There’s no danger here.”
-----
Wonwoo stood in front of his father, watching him stare him down.
He was for sure drunk, Wonwoo knew it.
His mother had left them alone, figuring they needed privacy. She was always one to run away and hide when his father was like this. When he needed her the most.
Wonwoo’s father also made his guards stand outside the room to wait since he wanted to speak to his son alone.
They were reluctant to leave him but only did so because his father threatened them so Wonwoo sent them out, knowing they wouldn’t hurt a King.
Plus, he wanted to make his father happy, not even more upset than he was.
“Where is that snobby prince husband of yours?”
Wonwoo frowned. “He had a meeting to attend but he should be here any minute with the document.” He paused. “And he’s not snobby, father. He’s a really good man.”
His father barked out a laugh. “A good man? A good man doesn’t talk down to people of a higher status than him, especially those he doesn’t know.” He stepped towards Wonwoo, causing the prince to take a step back. “A good man doesn’t speak to his elders that way, especially over a bitch.” The King stood in front of Wonwoo, staring down at him. Wonwoo was shaking nervously. “You wouldn’t know what a good man was even if he came and slapped you in the face.”
And with that comment, he slapped Wonwoo, causing the younger to fall to the floor.
Wonwoo held his cheek, his father grabbing him by his robe and yanking him up a bit. “A good man doesn’t speak back to their father either you little-“
The doors slammed open, causing them both to look up.
Wonwoo’s heart filled with joy as he saw who it was.
Mingyu.
And he looked very pissed.
He walked over to them, “Get your hands off my husband.”
The King looked at him, not letting go of Wonwoo. “Or what? This doesn’t concern you.”
“It does when you are hurting my person. Now release him or else.”
The King scoffed. “Or else what? What are you going to do boy? You don’t have that much power, especially not here.”
Wonwoo let out a whimper as the King jerked him around.
That was the final straw for Mingyu.
He grabbed the King’s hand, yanking it off of Wonwoo’s robe. He pulled his hand back, punching the King in the face, causing him to stumbled to the ground.
Wonwoo couldn’t believe his eyes.
Mingyu had punched his father.
He scrambled up, grabbing a hold of Mingyu to calm him down. “Hey,” Mingyu looked at him. “I’m okay, yeah? Let’s go before we cause more trouble.”
Mingyu nodded, turning back to looked at the King who was still on the floor.
Wonwoo knew he definitely was drunk then.
“The treaty is off. No document is needed to be sign. You will be getting nothing from us.”
Mingyu held Wonwoo’s hand firmly, turning to walk away.
“You can’t do this to me! We had an agreement!”
“Our agreement is over,” Mingyu yelled back. “Wonwoo is my husband now and he will be with me for the rest of my life. And I will give him a better life then you ever have.”
Wonwoo’s mother walked in, hearing all the commotion. She walked over to Wonwoo’s father, helping him up.
“I should have married his sorry bitch ass to the Lee family like I planned before! At least they would put him in his place!”
Mingyu didn’t say anything, looking at the guards. “We will be leaving now, making sure they don’t follow.”
They nodded.
“This isn’t over Kim! Do you hear me?!”
They walked out of the palace, getting in the carriage with the guards following close behind.
They headed back towards their kingdom, Wonwoo letting out a sigh.
“I’m sorry if I caused trouble now with your kingdom and mine. I know your father is going to be disappointed.”
Mingyu shook his head. “You didn’t cause any trouble, okay? My father will completely understand once I explain everything that happened.” He turned towards Wonwoo. “Besides, you are worth more than some stupid treaty to me. I won’t let him take you from me.”
Wonwoo smiled, kissing Mingyu gently.
They pulled away, Mingyu caressing Wonwoo’s face. “Did he hit you?”
Wonwoo nodded. “I was defending you and it made him angry. I’m pretty sure he was drunk from how loud he was talking and how quickly he stumbled. He usually knows how to stand his ground.”
Mingyu sighed, pulling Wonwoo close to him. “I’m so sorry, my love. I should have arrived with you and you wouldn’t have got hurt.”
Wonwoo smiled. “I’m okay now, I promise. You were my knight in shining armor, coming to save the day.”
Mingyu smiled while Wonwoo let out a giggle.
“I’ll always save you.”
-----
After some explaining to his father, they happily agreed to cancel the treaty and cut ties with the Jeon kingdom.
But that didn’t separate Wonwoo and Mingyu. Their marriage was real, was more than something arranged. It was official.
Rumors did spread across the land about some of the threatening statements King Jeon was making towards the Kims, especially his own son. This caused more guards to be seen around the kingdom, day and night. Especially more seen around Wonwoo.
Wonwoo insisted that his father’s words were nothing more than empty threats, but Mingyu wanted to be cautious. He wanted Wonwoo watched whenever he wasn’t around.
Today was one of those days that he was around.
They were sitting in the garden together, eating lunch on a blanket that was laid out on the grass.
Wonwoo was feeding Mingyu, listening to him rant on about certain knights he was having issues with.
“How hard is it to learn to properly put on all your armor? Especially in a timing manner? I mean seriously, I know they are new but come on now.”
Wonwoo giggled. “Not everyone can be as perfect and precise as you.”
Mingyu smiled, leaning forward and pecking Wonwoo’s lips. “I think you are the perfect one, my love.”
Wonwoo blushed, shaking his head. “You are very charming, you know that?”
Mingyu shrugged. “Doesn’t a prince always have to be charming? Hence the name, Prince Charming?”
Wonwoo rolled his eyes, shoving the man slightly. He caught Wonwoo’s hand, pulling him close to him.
Mingyu brushed his nose against Wonwoo’s. “You know, I have never felt closer to someone I barely knew.”
Wonwoo smiled. “You do know me though. We talk about all our likes and dislikes and about our pasts. It’s like I’ve known you forever now.”
Mingyu brushed his fingers through the younger one’s hair. “I know, and I love that you are so comfortable to be around.”
“May I confess something to you?”
Mingyu nodded.
“I was nervous when I first heard about our arranged marriage. I didn’t know what type of person you would be. If you would be kind or just like my father.” Mingyu squeezed his hands. “Heck, I was even worried if I was going to be perfect enough for you. But all of that changed and you made my worried go away. And I’m so glad that I am your husband.”
He leaned forward, kissing him softly.
They pulled away, staring at each other. “You have made me a change man and for the better. I take time for myself more to relax. I’m around the palace more and attending meals. My parents even notice. Everything with you is perfect and it’s like we were meant to be.”
Wonwoo smiled. “And if you had to do it all over again?”
“I’d still choose you.”
They stared at each other for a minute before they were interrupted.
“Sir Mingyu!”
They pulled away, turning to look at a rushing knight headed towards them.
“We have an emergency sir! We need your assistance! We are being attacked by the Lee kingdom!”
Mingyu stood up, pulling Wonwoo up with him. He looked confused. “What? Why so suddenly?”
“They are here demanding something from us.”
“What are they demanding?”
The knight looked over at Wonwoo.
“Sir Wonwoo.”
Mingyu gripped Wonwoo’s hand tightly.
“They said that they are here for Wonwoo as per a treaty they signed with King Jeon. He made a deal with them for money and they could have sir Wonwoo to marry their son.”
Wonwoo felt nervous, his heart racing.
He didn’t want to go with them or marry anyone else.
He looked at Mingyu who was staring at him.
“Please go gather everyone else up that isn’t out there and get them ready. Now.”
The knight nodded, running off.
Mingyu looked down at Wonwoo. “My love, I hate this is happening but you know I must keep you safe.” He signaled over to the two guards that were standing watch. “You’ll go with them, yes? And when it’s over I’ll come get you. I can’t have you out here in danger, I’ll be worried.”
Wonwoo frowned, nodding his head. “I will, for you. But please be safe. I don’t want to lose you.”
“I will, I promise you won’t.”
Mingyu turned to walk away, Wonwoo suddenly stopping him by grabbing his hand. “Mingyu, wait.”
The man turned to him. “Yes?”
Wonwoo bit his lip, heart pounding in his chest. “I love you.”
Mingyu looked at him with bright eyes, a huge smile spreading across his face. “God, you make it so hard to leave you.” He leaned down and kissed him, passionately and slowly.
They pulled away. “I love you too. Now please be careful and go with the guards to my office. No one should fine you.”
Wonwoo nodded as Mingyu ran off, leaving him with the two guards.
“Right this way sir.”
Wonwoo followed the guards, through the castle and to the knights’ corridor since it was on the lowest floor.
They went into Mingyu’s office, making Wonwoo sit farther in the room, while the two stood by the door.
Wonwoo was glad there were no windows in here. He defiantly couldn’t watch all that fighting going on, knowing he couldn’t do anything to help.
It made him sick to his stomach at the thought that all of this was happening because of his father.
After a while of sitting in there, it felt like time was beginning to tick slowly before anyone knocked on the door.
Wonwoo’s heart raced, hoping it was Mingyu.
One of the guards opened it, hand on his sword.
“Who is it?”
“I am here to get Prince Wonwoo, as request from Prince Kim. They need more help so he asked I come get you all.”
Wonwoo frowned at that, something wasn’t right.
Prince Kim?
The two guards eyed the man suspiciously. “He wants you to watch Prince Wonwoo?”
The man nodded. “He insisted. They need all the help they can get out there so you better hurry.”
The guards hesitated but nodded, “Make sure you don’t let him out your sight.”
The man nodded as the two men left the room, running to join battle.
He turned to Wonwoo. “Follow me Prince.”
Wonwoo slowly nodded, trailing behind the guy out of Mingyu’s office.
He glanced at a sword placed by the door, quietly grabbing it and place it under his robe, to hide.
He followed the man back up the stairs, noticing that he was try to lead him to a different exit. Like he was trying to sneak him out without being caught.
Wonwoo knew the castle by now so he knew immediately what was going on.
Wonwoo stared at the back of the man’s head. “Did you say Prince Kim sent you?”
The man nodded.
“I hope you don’t mind me asking but what’s the princes name?”
The man stopped, looking back at Wonwoo. “Excuse me?”
Wonwoo stared at him. “I said, what’s the prince’s name?” He eyed him. “Every person here who works with him knows his name. Only outsiders call him Prince Kim.”
The guy didn’t move, staring at Wonwoo.
“And since you don’t know his name,” Wonwoo drew the sword from his robe. “I think you are an outsider.”
The guy smirked, drawing his sword as well. “Very smart, Prince Jeon. But listen, I’m supposed to bring you back alive and in one piece. I don’t want to have to battle you. So, lets make this easier on each other and you put the sword down.”
Wonwoo shrugged. “That’s a shame then because I’m not leaving. So, I guess will have to do this the hard way.”
“I guess so then.”
The guy charged towards him, bringing his blade up only to have Wonwoo block it with his sword.
They fought each other up and down the hall, the clinking of their swords being the only noise heard.
If Wonwoo learned one thing from his father through the years, it was how to fight with a sword. And right now, that knowledge was coming in handy.
“You know, I can’t wait till that Lee kid kills your Prince and makes you his slave because honestly someone needs to teach you a lesson.”
Wonwoo’s froze for a second, the guy taking the opportunity to strike, cutting Wonwoo’s hand as he blocked the blade.
Wonwoo hissed, looking down at the cut. It wasn’t too deep but it was bleeding. He glanced down at the bracelet he had on.
He gripped the sword tightly, anger in his eyes.
“That’s never going to happen.”
He charged at the guy, swinging his sword at him, catching the man off guard.
“And I’m no one’s slave!”
He kept pushing him back as he fought with his sword before he found an opening, tripping the man and stabbing him in the shoulder, just enough to wound him.
The guy let out a scream as Wonwoo stood on top of him, shoving the blade deep.
“Prince Wonwoo!”
Wonwoo looked up to see a group of guards running towards him.
He took a deep breath, stepping away from the man.
“Please do something with him. He is a part of the Lee’s.”
They nodded, handling the screaming man who had a sword sticking out of his shoulder.
“Prince Mingyu is looking for you near the dining hall.
Wonwoo took off, running through the castle, looking around.
“My love!”
Wonwoo almost cried as he saw Mingyu. He ran towards him, jumping in his arms.
“Mingyu! You are okay!”
Mingyu held him tightly, before placing him down, looking him over.
“Are you okay? Are you injured? What happened?”
“A-A man came and told the guards you sent him for me. But I knew something was up. So, I snuck one of your swords and me and him fought. He cut my hand a little but I ended up tripping him, stabbing him in the shoulder.”
“Oh, my love, let me see your hand.”
Wonwoo held out his bloody hand, Mingyu looking it over with a frown on his face.
“Mingyu, I’m okay. The real question is, are you okay?”
Mingyu nodded, smiling. “I fought the man who wanted to marry you. No one was killed but plenty were injured. They gave up after I held my sword to that Lee boy’s throat. Backed off. We should be okay but father is taking drastic measures and cutting ties.”
He pulled Wonwoo close to him. “This is my fault Mingyu.”
The prince shook his head. “It’s not, my love. Now, let’s go get your hand taken care of.”
-----
Wonwoo laid in bed, Mingyu shortly joining him.
The King had to hold a meeting canceling and forming alliance across the lands with other kingdoms. The Lee’s and Jeon’s were exiled from here and no treaties or deals were to be made. No one from those kingdoms were to place foot here or else there would be consequences.
Now Wonwoo felt at ease.
Mingyu pulled him close to him, looking at his bandaged hand.
“How does your hand feel?”
Wonwoo smiled. “Much better, thank you.”
“I’m so glad, my love. I can’t believe you fought that man and with a sword too.”
Wonwoo laughed. “I know a thing or two.”
Mingyu smiled. “I guess you’ll have to show me so I can see how much you’ve learned.”
“Deal.”
Wonwoo snuggled closer to him, hiding his face in Mingyu’s neck.
“My love?”
“Yes, Mingyu?”
“When you told me you love me earlier, did you mean it?”
Wonwoo placed a kissed on the prince’s throat. “Yes. I feel strongly about it and don’t regret saying it. I have never felt more loved than when I’m with you. Ring or no ring, it would still be you who I want to love me.”
Mingyu squeezed him tightly.
“I can’t wait to grow with you. To wake up next to you every day. To bask in your beauty every minute. I can’t wait to adopt kids with you and have them run around here. I can’t wait to rule this place with you by my side. Everything I see in my future, I see with you.”
Wonwoo leaned back, a huge smile on his face.
“Do you mean that?”
“Every word. I am so glad I am married to you. And I swear to always protect you, from this day forward.”
Wonwoo kissed Mingyu, slowly but passionately.
He pulled back a little.
“I love you, my prince charming.”
Mingyu chuckled, shaking his head. “I love you too, my love.”
