This is just wonderful. I love your Watson and Mary-- they're very much of their time, but their time encompassed a much wider range of ideas than we tend to remember.
And your Holmes is just perfect-- foul-mouthed and fantastic. I loved him, and I loved this story.
I read Thomas Hardy before I read Jane Austen. My view of the 19th century was always fairly dark... as research for this story, I read medical texts, housekeeping books, and pornography from the era, and well. Well. Yes.
(the porn is REALLY perverted, and I say this as an internet pornographer.)
