Two cents' worth: I think it's really important that there be a compulsory identification for meta posts, more comparable to the warnings boxes, rather than a more standard "tag". I also think it should be one of the things that you can set to be permanently filtered out in the same way that in your preferences you can elect to always show whole works rather than chapters. I don't want to have to tick a box every time I run a search.
(On that note, I'd really love to see a similar permanent opt-in for 'show complete works only' as a default, but understand that that is a separate issue.)
I would also hope the definition of meta that gets decided upon hews closer to essays and formal reviews rather than fevered reaction posts and gif spams. If that were the case I'd occasionally look at the section, but if not I'd avoid like the plague. Those things do have their place, but I still believe it isn't here.
Being able to categorize your work in a way that users can find (or exclude it) from their searches is definitely going to be one component of hosting non-fiction (as well as other media formats) on the AO3. We are still in the early stages of discussing how we can best make that work in a way that serves both posters and searchers. But it will likely involve both actions by users and technical options. Unfortunately, a technical solution is likely to take much longer than the policy parts and tagging options, but chances are both will affect users' choices to post images to the AO3.
