My thoughts: I don't know how feasible this would be, but I'd love to be able to selectively (and accurately) filter for a work's media type, since I mostly visit this site to read fanfics and have little interest in things like meta, videos, or podfic. Having the option to view works of all media types on the same page may have its uses and may work well for some people or situations, but it would also be nice to be able to filter it down to just the type of work that you're looking for without having to rely on posters to use tags properly (or at all).
Yes the ability to filter content in or out of searches is going to become an even more important aspect of searching on the AO3. The committees who will have to put this into place are already beginning to discuss what will be needed, though a technical solution is likely to take much longer than the policy parts.
