I don't read or write meta, but I'm happy for those who do and want to see meta represented on the archive. I just hope that this decision makes fanwork type filter fields a priority now. Not just to filter in/out meta - I've been looking forward to a way to filter out podfic, fanart, fanvids etc so if this is the push AO3 needs to get some categorization in progress (and maybe tweak the upload form so it's more relevant to different fanwork types as needed) then I think this can only be a good thing.
You're right about how the meta decision will impact this aspect of searching on the AO3. The committees who will have to put this into place are already beginning to discuss what will be needed, though a technical solution is likely to take much longer than the policy parts.
