Ohhh New Zealand! Rarely see it mentioned, it's so refreshing....
Since your a hobbyist hiker you probably have great experience in general, since Bush walks can go from 'well maintained walkways' to 'hey mate, the way we gotta got is that way, doesnt actually look like a path but it totally is if we crawl through a few bushes and rock climb a bit'
Though NZ have given me a distaste of bugs, by no means deadly but really really creepy. Damn Weta's and earwigs

  Weta are great! Certainly freaky looking but they're pretty chill.
  The real monsters are goddam sandflies, I'm never doing the Nelson Lakes wake in Summer again, so many sandflies.
