Love to see Miles having a support system that comes together. I did wonder how MvK was able to get custody without being directly present due to his injury, and it makes sense that his older daughter would represent him in that way. But Ray wins custody this time, and with help from Phoenix and Larry's parents! (Love the comments from Larry's dad here, btw. I can see where Larry got the more jokester personality traits from.) And such a neat choice having Phoenix's mom be a childcare worker, adds another dimension to her statements during the trial.
A wild theory starts brewing in Raymond’s head, a tale of cruel revenge and petty manipulation, but he keeps it to himself. Surely no one would be cruel enough for what he just imagined…? Ohhh buddy, you are more right than you could possibly realize.
Aww, I love the conversation between Ray and Jeffrey. Becoming a parent in one's late teens/early twenties is scary and hard and he understands. (Almost forgot his parents made the dick move of kicking Kate out of the house, ouch.)
I do think it would be interesting and make sense for Miles to still be a prosecutor without being raised by MvK. He's seeing a number of cases go unsolved, including his father's murder, and would probably want to solve cases in a more hands-on way (and therefore save people as a prosecutor, the conclusion he reaches in AAI2). Meanwhile, I could see Phoenix pursuing defense as a way of picking up Miles' former ambition, possibly because he also admired Gregory or wants to follow and support Ray. I see the sentiment in a lot of places that if you change some aspect of the canon story, everyone's life trajectory would be unrecognizably different, but I heartily disagree. Similar things can happen, it's just the reasons and sentiments involved that would be different.
Honestly it's while writing this that i remembered MvK mentions having another kid who isn't Franziska or Miles. These two have a long-lost sibling somewhere out there and maybe they don't even know it haha
Yeah from what i could gather, Jeffrey must have been around 22/23 when he adopted Katherine if we assume she was abandoned as a baby. Justine was also 21 when she adopted John... they were all so young geez. as someone in their early twenties right now I really can't imagine becoming a parent
I definitely agree! Obviously, if Gregory had lived, then I believe Miles would have gone on to be like his dad and all that, he admired him too much to not be anything else, but here, while he respects Ray, he doesn't hold the same kind of idolisation for him and the desire to be like him, he still is disillusioned after DL-6 after seeing Hammond's methods, and it /is/ because he loves his father this much that he wants to solve the mystery of his death and make sure culprits are properly convicted, and he knows it would be easier to do so as a prosecutor (also with Ray there to reassure him that his nightmares are only just that, Miles is in a better headspace to think logically about DL-6 and all the inconsistencies). But also from a writer's point of view, I think it just opens up a more interesting dynamic to eventually write later than if he became a defence attorney too since everyone around him is already on that side.
