I mean, Andals don't practice human sacrifice. Which is probably the only way they are less barbaric than the First Men at this point. Granted, human sacrifice to ones gods actually makes some sense in a world where gods and blood magic are real. Even so, the First Men are likely much less toxic than the Andals who are still carving out kingdoms in the name of their god.
It is toxic. Normally, I would never defend beating a child, but given the choice between beating him, or leaving him vulnerable to threats, the choice is the lesser of two evils.
