Comment on Resignation of OTW Directors

    1. Natalie's stance on Pluralkit is perfectly reasonable. It's a serious accessibility issue to be in a server where it is not possible to block a user's messages.

      1. I agree. Natalia's statement was perfectly reasonable given how little time they had to make a decision before the chat began, and if anything, I hope they conclude against introducing PluralKit or a similar bot for future meetings in the official OTW discords. Those plugins introduce more problems than they solve, in my experience.

        1. The statement you linked to says "we will look into the risks and alternatives, and see if there is anything we can implement in the future to help people navigate the server." They literally say that they will do research. Mentioning that they are also open to suggestions isn't "putting the onus on" anybody.

            1. Respectfully, as it stands it is hard to see how the server is actually inaccessible without a bot like Pluralkit. But I think my personal issue here is that this is being dredged back (by a white user) as even more fans of color are coming forward to discuss their experiences with racism from OTW.

        2. If spectators aren't normally interacting anyway, then how does the lack of the bot make the server inaccessible?

    2. what’s more important, catering to a condition that the scientific literature overwhelmingly shows doesn’t actually work in the whimsical way pluralkit users make it seem, or giving people the comfort of blocking users they’re uncomfortable with? frankly i don’t see how this is an issue

    3. DID simply does not work the way internet systems say it does and I resent the fact that people who want to roleplay a serious and debilitating mental illness have the gall to call it ableism when others don't want to play along, especially when playing along comes at the expense of being able to block users they don't wish to interact with. People in the chat had the nerve to compare wanting an unblockable bot to needing a wheelchair.

It's not harassment to tell someone they're full of shit when they're spouting nonsense. That's just a regular internet disagreement. Harassment would be if they were followed to other platforms or sent repeated private messages after they chose to disengage. It would be if people were paraphrasing their words out of context to whip people into a frenzy against them. Harassment takes more than just an argument.

But! If you see it as harassment, doesn't that speak to how important it is to be able to block users you don't want to see messages from?

Even now when there are much more serious problems happening within the OTW, they want to take this chance to make things all about them, because that's what this is, it's a cry for attention. I hope the irony of bringing this up with an End OTW Racism icon is not lost on you.

      1. Well said! +1 The sheer audacity to call not wanting to use a highly exploitable bot for role-playing in an official venue ableism, and to then turn around and insult the volunteer's effort in the same breath. All while incredibly pressing issues of actual merit and importance about the future of the OTW are being discussed. There is no accessibility issue, nothing is stopping these people from interacting the same way as everyone else, other than they are being told to do so without a special little mark next to their name. I'm glad the OTW is taking the concerns and safety of their discord users seriously in this regard, at this time.

      2. Oh, very well said! There are so many other, more important issues OTW needs to work on addressing, like racism, harassment, and AI.

      3. I wholeheartedly agree! And I think that this should be expanded not to just DID, but all mental/physical conditions. As an autistic + ADHD teen with a self-diagnosed personality disorder, I do sometimes experience ableism in the OTW and the fandom community as a whole. I want this to change.
