Comment on Angel's Demon

  1. Charlie, a vegetarian? Somehow, I’ve never seen someone tack that trait on to Charlie before and yet, it feels so fitting…

Before I get into the meat of the hospital scene, can I just say that I personally love the way Kevin hides Charlie from the public eye? This is kinda one of my favourite story tropes, the “Regular human discovers supernatural being and has to hide it from government official” plot. It’s the same reason I love works like Animorphs and Stranger Things (both of them taking place around the same time period, weirdly enough), even with Kevin telling the kids not to tell anyone about it and it fucking excites me holy shit

Anyways, new character. Amanda Sims! I already feel bad for her; it absolutely is not easy being the middleman between a guy whose morals you support (but still worry about) and an entire government body. I appreciate characters like her: she grounds the “Human and supernatural being solves crimes together” by representing the consequences. Kevin can’t carelessly dive into whatever case he wants now because it will possibly draw unwanted eyes to Charlie (and god forbid the government finds out about “aliens”), so it introduces even more suspense to the story! But at the same time, I can tell Amanda really trusts Kevin and knows he’s doing good, she just doesn’t want him to get into serious trouble :(

By the by, remember when I said that the criminals Kevin is hunting down could potentially rat out Charlie’s existence? Yeah I didn’t expect that to happen this soon! Thankfully it seems that these two men are being written off as crazy, but I fear the day a criminal manages to snap a photo (or otherwise get hard proof of Charlie), because what will that mean for her? 👀

The ending scene was a nice, chill time by comparison, which I appreciate quite a lot. Gives me time to breathe, you know? Although that little line about “Kevin being a hero” from Charlie has to sting a little, especially after the brief bout of guilt he’d experienced back in the hospital. I understand, though! In this line of work, I’m sure Kevin has failed to save some people (and he said as much in the hospital), so the guilt isn’t completely unwarranted, but c’mon man! Take some pride in your work, you managed to save two little girls with barely any harm or fuss! ♥️

What a great insight to the aftermath of a typical rescue operation, and I’m curious to see Cassie come into the picture (and probably meet Charlie, based on the first chapter). I’ll be hopping onto the next chapter soon, but in the meantime, I hope you like this comment 💜🐓🍗

    1. Charlie being a vegetarian was never planned - I didn't know until she spit the bones out - so she surprised me just as much as any reader. It added a few bits through out the story, and gets revisited in One on One.

For some reason, I love the amnesia trope and the slow discovery of who they are, some stories I imagined but never written in other fandoms always used this trope, and this was the first time I got to actually use it in a complete novel. The government aspect coming in later is always fun, but not always effective. As one who does not have a great deal of knowledge of how law enforcement works outside of film and TV, I had to pick from those already modified pools to design the plot here.

Amanda Sims - the link from their personal world to the outside world - that he has to toe the line to some degree.. his ball and chain, so to speak. I had a lot of fun with her character and vices.

I won't say much more as we'll be revisiting some of this once you are into the 'Extended Edition', where you'll have more insight into the actions, motivations and reasoning of the cast to see if there are even more subtle nuances to how they behave. :)

And of course I enjoy getting Morped!
