Comment on Angel's Demon

  1. TLDR; Hell yeah new poweeeeer

I like that we’re immediately jumping in to the action here. Well, kinda. We’re jumping in to the car ride before the action, but same thing.

Nice to see another aspect of Kevin’s work: search and rescue! It’s fascinating to think about how he would’ve conducted the operations on his own before Charlie came into his life, because imagine this: everything Charlie did in this chapter? Kevin the human had to do it all by himself without the benefits of super senses, and sure, he might had a bit of assistance here and there, and he may not have a 100% success rate but goddamnit, it’s still bloody impressive.

I like the hint of the difference between Charlie and Kevin’s experience here: the moment she hears it’s not a kidnapping, she’s confused on what good she could do. Kevin? Already on it, telling her to use her enhanced senses to track the boy down.

Oooh, his sister dabbles in witchcraft? Now that’s intriguing and is definitely going to play into Charlie’s arrival to Earth, although no way in Hell is Cassie going to be her ticket home. So I wonder (assuming Cassie can perform legitimate witchcraft) if she’ll be able to summon or contact entities and that’s why Lucifer seemed to know Kevin as well…

Oh, Amanda used to be his girlfriend? That… actually makes sense considering how they were speaking to each other, and why she would be willing to cover for him when it could get her into trouble lol

The actual rescue scene was a treat to witness. The writing style makes it so suspenseful (even if I knew the boy would be safe in the end), and again, I love a supernatural entity wielding its supernatural abilities in a non-supernatural setting (Earth). Especially how her sense of smell is described here: “the boy’s scent is mixed with the rolling smells of the river” is my particular favourite.

Half of this chapter’s fun is in Charlie’s thoughts. She was already relatively comfortable with her demonic nature in the show (depending on how you view it), so seeing her kind nature struggle against her natural demonic instincts is really fascinating. It’s something unknown to her, and the unknown tends to be terrifying to people, so that’s why I think her wanting to ditch the life she doesn’t remember to stay with Kevin makes sense. She’s not going to miss her past if she doesn’t remember it at all, right?

In contrast to Kevin, who so far has always been there to soften the terror of discovering her new abilities (helping her to control them, being there to snap her out of a full-on demonic rampage), so it reads like Charlie’s associating Kevin with “safety” and her past (most likely filled with demons and otherworldly abilities) with “dangerous”, so no duh she’d go for the handsome hunk lol

That ending conversation was a nice way to cap it off, and I fear the day when Charlie and Kevin would fail to save people as much as Charlie does. Although it did give me a little chuckle that Charlie still remembered to use the seatbelt haha

What a nice chapter! It seems pretty standalone, with the exception of Cassie (Charlie’s biggest hope at the moment) being mentioned, but I don’t mind it really. I like seeing different kinds of missions and wouldn’t be against seeing more in the future. I’ll be hopping onto the next chapter soon but in the meantime, I hope you liked this comment! ♥️

    1. I recall when I mapped out this chapter, that I wanted to explore a demon in the forest being as lost as the victims usually are in movies being hunted BY demons - she had to use what she knew, and in a way, that she didn't know to her advantage - This is her second discovery of power (first power becoming a demon, itself) - conjuring - something she did in the series - that helped her when she needed it most. The theme of discovery under pressure is prevalent in this story and was absolutely a joy to figure out how to evolve her. After all, she is a blank canvas, and most everything she does, learns and grows from is so new to her.

Exploring how one processes 'success' under the duress and traumatic moments prior to it was another piece I loved discovering with Charlie "I saved a life, and I'm devastated" because of how close she came to failing.

It's a long way off; but Time to Process was one of my favorite Charlie moments to write..

Cassie, I think you will come to adore, and Amanda allowed me to write a character in ways I normally won't write a main OC.

The conversation at the end was poignant for Kevin and his relationship with God. I felt it necessary to point out that he stopped believing in God, only to find a demon. Imagine the internal conflict. Especially when said Demon behaves more angelic than how he views God for allowing what happened to him; happen.

I am not religious, and do not know the nuances and intricacies of religion, but I do know what it's like to have your faith and beliefs challenged.

That you found the chapter as exciting to read, as I did writing it, is one of the nicest rewards a reader could hope for.

(And im still going to lament you didn't read V2 then V1 LMAO - but you did say something that made me smile and think of a particular word: 'foreshadow'.)

I most certainly loved your thoughtful interpretation of this chapter. Thank you.
