Comment on Angel's Demon

  1. TLDR; FUCK.

    FUCK.

Shit really hit the fan, huh? Jesus Christ, so much happened that I dunno if I’ll be able to touch on everything, but I’ll do my best!

That beginning scene with everyone preparing for the rescue mission is probably the only respite we get until the end of Act 2, and even then we get a piece of ominous foreshadowing: “those assholes had no chance in hell”, huh? Yeeeaaah, about that…

The mission itself was, in my opinion, written very well. From the fight scenes to the suspense between them, I was honestly expecting it to go worse than it had and another one of the girls would die before Charlie can save them. Thankfully, the girls were safely rescued, but that doesn’t mean our protagonists escaped consequence-free.

That’s what I like about the way this mission wrapped up: the mission technically went well (all victims were rescued save for the one that had perished long before they could do anything about it) but. But, it still feels bittersweet because of three major factors: Samedi booking it like a little bitch, Amanda losing her badge (which is about the worst thing to happen at this juncture) and Charlie and Kevin being on the cusp of another fight. This is a good show that there’s consequences to screwing with the rules no matter how well-intentioned you are, and I feel that what’s happening to Amanda here is a taste of what could potentially happen to Kevin himself if Stefon gets his hands on him (I’m eyeballing the “Are you going to arrest me” line in particular).

Just imagine! Amanda’s gone, that means someone is taking her place while she’s displaced. I don’t know how much help Amanda will be without her resources, and I don’t think her replacement is going to be as willing to turn a blind eye to Kevin unless he also fucked them at one point. Fuuuuuck, I can’t imagine how many things could go wrong in this scenario…

Moving on to the action scenes, my god, Charlie fucking shined in these moments. The way she’s scaling bloody walls and imitating horror movie tropes to mess with the sentries is so freaky, I can definitely see the “human horror” influence in nearly everything she did here, which clashes heavily with her sorrow at seeing the dead girl in the best way possible. There’s no words to describe how much I love the contrast between her demonic side and her compassionate side, holy shit.

Kevin’s no slouch either; he’s showing us readers in no uncertain terms just how he managed to succeed as a bounty hunter even before he had Charlie by his side. Especially that fight with Giles… Woof. Let’s just say that the crotch stomp is the best possible end to that fight.

I don’t remember if I’ve said this about Samedi before, but good god he’s menacing. Whether he’ll actually back up all that “Gogogogogo” energy remains to be seen, but if this is all a bluff and he ends up going down like a wet paper towel (because I doubt he’s the final boss of this story), then he’s doing a fantastic job at pretending to be terrifying here haha.

His ability to wield witchcraft like Cassie (at least, according to Kevin and Charlie) is interesting, particularly the bit about her “crossing the magic boundary”, which sounds like a metal detector but for living beings/anything that moves, which only makes the fact that he wants Charlie specifically worrying if he thinks she’s better than whatever Bible can give.

Anyways, there goes my theory about him possibly being involved in Charlie’s summoning, dang it. Bah, that was kinda a long shot anyways since he didn’t give any indication in his first appearance of summoning or knowing about Charlie.

That’s about all I have to say for this chapter! I did my best to keep my thoughts from straying so hopefully you’ll be able to understand everything haha. I’ll be hopping onto the next Act soon, but in the meantime, please enjoy my ramblings!
