Hihi! I’m back with another comment, and I’m eager to get into this because while the last chapter had just been set-up for the story, this is where the main action happens!
First of all, I like the slow start of Arthur essentially keeping an eye on Shield Guy and Princess Bitch as they go through the “training” phase of being heroes (presumably what happens in the original episode) but also doing his own thing like with Erhard when Arthur extracted information from him. It feels like a natural blend of canon events and Arthur’s character being inserted into the story, especially when he’s forced to go on the run with Shield Guy.
Before that though, I have to say that I really enjoyed the scene where he essentially bluffed his way into getting information about the conspiracy, and it makes sense too! Arthur was practically raised around this sort of lifestyle, so it makes sense that he’d be able to pull this shit in a world that’s, in a way, softer than the one he came from. Plus, it’s just a cool scene overall, with how Arthur made sure he got the info he wanted from the blacksmith before revealing it was a bluff (the blacksmith being annoyed was icing on the cake). And him being understanding of Erhard’s difficult position when it comes to indirectly enabling the conspiracy also tracks.
Small note: I feel like Arthur letting the blacksmith copy the gun design was his silent way of apologising haha
Moving on, the scene with the scheming pope is… ominous, to say the least. The fact that they’re already plotting ways to work around Arthur’s natural inclination to distrust people is worrisome, and also smart, as reluctant as I am to admit it. Can’t directly influence the mistrustful outlaw? Aim for the outlaw’s beloved companion! It’s simple, but it works.
The whole conspiracy to get Shield Guy arrested is really infuriating, but in a good way. Because even though Arthur does his best to make everyone see reason, it’s no use if those people already know reason and are just choosing to ignore it, if that makes sense. Like, Arthur is trying to approach it from the angle of “King is so insanely bigoted that he mistakenly thinks Shield Guy assaulted the princess”, but that’s not true, is it? It’s “King purposely set Shield Guy up”, but let’s be honest, it didn’t matter what Arthur did here, Shield Guy was fuuuuuucked.
I liked the little pep talk Arthur gave Shield Guy once they had successfully gotten away. I’m not sure how this panned out in the original media, but here, it reads like Shield Guy would’ve gone down a bad path if Arthur hadn’t been there to talk him out of it. In general, I love the dynamic between Shield Guy and Arthur because in a sense, it reminds me of Young Arthur with Hosea and Dutch (before… well, you know what happened). And I have faith that Arthur won’t go down the same way as the other two did, so Shield Guy is in good hands :)
Speaking of Dutch and Hosea, I like that they were briefly mentioned. I find that a lot of isekai stories have the MC so immersed in the fantasy world that they completely throw away their past, which isn’t fun! Half of the appeal in isekai fiction, in my opinion, is seeing a character from World A, AND with knowledge pertaining to World A, interact with World B using said knowledge. If not, then you might as well just use a character from World B to tell the story, right?
Oooh, Arthur gets his own demi-human? I wonder what species they will be… Granted though, I don’t think he’d be terribly happy with getting what’s essentially a slave. I’m curious as to how he’ll react to them!
That’s about all I have to say for this chapter! I’m eager to see how these two will work together now that they’re pretty much cut off from the king and most people associated with him, and I’ll be hopping onto the next chapter soon but in the meantime, I hope you enjoyed this comment! ✍🏻♥️🖤
I appreciate your comment, and I hope for more. I worked really hard on this chapter when I first posted it on fanfiction.net. A lot of people criticized me for making Arthur out of character or for not portraying their version of Arthur Morgan that they played with in the game.
But in truth, they failed to realize that Arthur was just resurrected; his feelings and emotions are still raw, even after a good day's worth of sleep. He ain't going to trust anyone he doesn't know fully, especially those who are in authority, as the majority of his life was spent running away from the authorities or thumbing his nose at them—something that all of us can agree with regarding what authority has given us in modern day and how it would probably not change for Arthur.
My favorite part of the scene that I crafted was Arthur confronting the king and knocking him out with a rubber bullet, and then helping Shield in the granite skate. It makes me wonder what a wet cowboy smells like—possibly like a wet dog, LOL.
I really hope for more comments within the chapters I posted, or rather transferred, from my other account here. I have also left some Easter eggs from other franchises within the next set of chapters. Hope you find them!
Yours truly, Fablemaster (my true name on the net).
Hihi! I don't normally reply to replies but after reading this, I thought I should quickly leave a response.
First of all, no problem! I stumbled upon this by pure chance (didn't even know you had FFN), but hey, the experience of getting told by readers "You're not writing this character to my tastes!" is pretty universal haha. One of the advantages of writing mostly OCs ;)
Personally, I feel like Arthur's acting perfectly fine (as of me reaching Chapter 5). Arthur had been pretty helpful/selfless in Chap6, but that's because he knew he was dying and was trying to make things right before he kicked the bucket. Here? He has a clean slate, so I'm not surprised he's acting a little more like his early game self, with some trauma sprinkled in. And honestly, it makes complete sense that he didn't trust the "king". I mean, even if he was the most law abiding citizen, everything about the king just screamed suspicious lol
I'll keep reading and commenting, although don't be alarmed if I drop offline for a while! I'm not really feeling well, so I might take a few days off to rest or whatever. Don't worry, it doesn't mean I abandoned reading your work!
