What a great chapter! I’m really enjoying the crime story feel of it, and the sudden move into horror at the end was very effective.
Some thoughts:
I love how human Sephiroth is and how much he fights to keep anything of his own.
I can’t believe how Grimoire simply mentioned Lucrecia as if talking about her is completely natural and not the faultline running through Sephiroth’s entire existence.
I can’t decide if Grimoire knew what would likely happen to Sephiroth once he got into contact with Jenova and lures him there on purpose. I notice that he seems to have second thoughts once they get close to her.
The scene were Jenova tries to possess Sephiroth was amazing! I really feared for him.
What the hell is Jenova doing in Corel? Is this the part that is left in Lucrecia’s body? (I don’t expect you to answer that 😊)
Hojo is loathsome as always but I must admit finding it funny how much energy he uses negging Sephiroth. The man’s obsessed😂
Thanks! Given how long this one took to write, I hope it comes off as intriguing without filler. That always is the problem with mysteries, how to keep it from seeming contrived without giving things away too quickly.
I recently realized that they've apparently tried to spell out Sephiroth's youth a lot more, but after reading some summaries online, I found it all very unconvincing and too trite. Also, the more I thought about it, the more I kept poking holes in how Lucrecia's existence could've stayed a mystery all the way up till Cloud and co. unearthed Vincent from his coffin. I guess it makes sense when it's in game cutscene format, but Sephiroth's obsession with his mother must have led him to try and find out more information about her. And it's actually hard to completely erase someone from existence, even if you're Hojo; on the other hand, it's easy to picture how you can create a narrative and trap someone in it without them totally realizing how , and that's got a lot of inherent horror in it, too. So this opener was me musing about how it could've gone down if Sephiroth had gotten out of his bubble and run into someone who'd known Lucrecia and who'd been a little overlooked.
Yeah, not to ever underplay abuse, but for someone as egotistical and lacking self-awareness as Hojo, some of his methods probably had more than a little camp/black humor to them. And all the more madness-inducing for how Sephiroth can't get away from it.
Vincent looked horrified! He knows it's much better to savor perfection than to gobble it down:P
