Actually things like holiday candles/lighting in octopus outlets, portable heaters (both as potential fire hazards & possible carbon monoxide sources), fireplace use, increase in ice/snow related vehicle accidents can make winter a tough season in Minnesota. To say nothing of the fact that using fire hoses in freezing weather is a NIGHTMARE. Water tends to freeze, not getting to the correct places as easily as it should, or freezing in wrong places & causing additional structural concerns. And even thought firefighter gear is mostly waterproof, being soaking with sweat inside gear, while it can get down to -40s⁰ F windchill; can put you more at risk for cold injuries.
And heaters are such a grab bag of hazards, depending on type.
Firefighters from Northern cities are my heroes... and I since I learned firefighting in the Navy (we covered stuff like aircraft crashes, flammable metals, large quantities of jet/marine fuels, & potental ordinance cook off - from bullets to actual missiles) so I don't make that statement lightly.
