Ngl this one got me teared up a bit. I feel so much for Akira having to listen to the way the thieves talk about Akechi prior to Ann's intervention. Deeply painful. I get their logic but it's fucking gutting the way that it's so easy for them to engage in such bad faith due to their (reasonable) grudges. Painful to know that their first response would be that it's better to have an Akechi that's a shell of the person he once was, having his autonomy taken from him. Even once theyre cowed and forced to recognize their hypocrisy, it's still painful.
But I like that. I like the thieves most of all when they're jagged and sometimes terrible friends. I think it makes them more compelling on the overall to have these edges which make Akira feel unwelcome as the flawed person he is. And we get to see his flaws on full display throughout here. He's just as messy and complicated but there's nothing inherently wrong about how he feels either.
I always like the concept of him forming a shadow post game and it works so well here. The rot of his hometown, the fear of his friends reactions, the grief of Akechi.
As another note I really enjoy the akechi-akira scenes just as much as before. There's such a a genuine air to how you characterize Goro throughout and I love how it comes through in this chapter. He feels like a perfect mix of his bitterness in thirdsem with a genuine ... Hope and curiosity. A version of himself without the reasons to cloak his more genuine side. He's still mean and fussy but it's so easy to see why Akira loves him. You do a good job.
I also have to compliment your prose as I do every chapter. You weave in some very poetic language and it's a pleasure to read.
Thank you once again for your wonderful words and for sticking with this work so far!! I think I said it before but I always look forward to your comments - they’re always so insightful and make me extra motivated to write more.
I hope you continue enjoying the future developments!
