Back for the promised chapter by chapter comment because I just have to!
I love the flashback to the UshiOi high school days as it is absolutely priceless. Your description of Oikawa, which essentially is how Ushijima sees/experiences him is flawless in that it's sensual but not overly sexy, masculine but somehow delicate...you know, like how he smells of vanilla and sweat...I think I had to stop reading to savor the perfection of that description. Ushijma had not chance...of course the kiss had to happen *sighs*
Having watched the anime and seeing the scenes of the boys jogging over and over again, the 'face off' scene that led to Oikawa 'getting even' with Ushi is so vivid to me it's uncanny. The dialogue, Oikawa's expressions, even the kiss...are so so in character for him, prideful and petty - it's perfect. And that Ushi just outright apologized and tried to report himself and ASKED OIKAWA OUT?????? I'm deceased, my friend. Your understanding and love for these two idiots are just another level and I thank you for it.
I'm not usually into breathplay nor masochistic-kinks but they do fit Oikawa's narrative so well that it is both painful and sexy to read. And the care Ushijima always show his boy all the more precious to witness. The way you built their dynamics from their high school days is so believable, but at the same time make me hungry for more details because it's just mystifying in the most delicious ways possible.
//A loathing. A craving. A hunger that made Oikawa throw himself at Ushijima with desperate sensuality, even though he seemed to hate every second of it with every fibre of his being. Their sex was like their old rivalry on the court: fierce, all-consuming and unrelenting. It tested Ushijima’s self-control to its limits, every time, in the best possible way. It was exhilarating.// - case in point, this is probably one of my (many) favorite paragraphs of any Haikyuu!! literature like EVER.
//Because Oikawa Tooru needed him to win.// - and this is the moment everything changed for Ushijima, right? I didn't realize the nuance you carefully crafted until this read-through (I'm a dummy), that this is where Oikawa became Tooru inside of Ushijima, the moment fascination turned into responsibility and care and maybe real love, and Ushijima had a reason to win instead of just winning. It's. Yeah. I'm floored.
Ugh...and everything that happens next, //Ushijima stood up. A small, distant part of him enjoyed the way Tooru’s head tilted all the way backwards to keep their eyes connected.// - you have such a gift of describing every details and actions, beautifully vivid but not flowery...It's just right to pull me into LIVE the moment with the characters and not just get lost in the words. HOW DO YOU DO IT???
//Ushijima raised an eyebrow at the question. “I said that I wasn’t going to choke you until you pass out, Tooru. I never said that I wasn’t going to fuck you. Now, be quiet and take off your clothes.”// Gahh...Ushijima can have MY soul. Ugh...how am I going to survive the rest of the story???
was just wondering as I reread this chapter how Ushi and Oi's first time was like? Like Ushijima definitely was a virgin, I imagine? Oikawa was probably not? Or? It's so intriguing to me! Like. Now that I start I can't stop thinking about it! Gosh, this fic lives in my head rent free and I welcome that with all my heart!

YESSS :D exactly!!! you picked it up, amazing! that's exactly the moment when Ushijima realises that this is the start of Something Big, and if he wants to do it properly, he has to commit and Learn The Rules. So in calling him Tooru, he both stakes his claim and takes possession, but also makes a commitment that he will work hard in return. That's why he says, "The next time you're in Japan..." -- it's a commitment from him. A promise. A goal for him to work towards.
