Summary
I stood over the body of a boy my age. He lay face down, shards of bone floating on a pool of spreading blood. My fingers were dripping. My head buzzed and my skin tingled. I felt numb, disconnected, a stranger behind my own eyes as the adrenaline receded like a wave. I had killed for the first time. All I thought was, ah, my hands are going to hurt tomorrow.
That man stood behind me, put his hand on my shoulder, and softly squeezed the still-tense muscle. It was the first time I had ever experienced my father’s love.
“Kiyotaka,” he said. “You will be the one to save this dying world.”
