Mara Jade, the Emperor's Hand, is sent by Palpatine to investigate a disturbance in the Force. The disturbance turns out to be a woman claiming to be from the future, where she knows Mara well. As Jaina Solo and Mara Jade get to know each other through a ray-shielded cell door in the Imperial Palace, the Emperor's Hand's entire worldview slowly crumbles around her, and Mara realizes she's made a terrible mistake.

Summary
Three months after defeating Darth Vader on Bespin and stripping him of the Force, Jaina Solo Fel is still stuck decades in the past. Between serving as a Colonel in the Rebel Alliance, training Luke, Mara, and Leia in the Jedi arts, and trying to find a way home, calling her 'overwhelmed' is an understatement. She's surrounded by the ghosts of long-dead friends and living, too-young family, called upon to lead and teach her mentors and elders.
Months after meeting her time-travelling niece from the future and defecting from the Empire, Mara Jade is settling into her post in Rebel Intelligence, balancing analysis and black ops with Jedi training. Ignoring her Force bond with Luke Skywalker grows more difficult by the day, as does ignoring the feelings she most certainly does NOT have for the Jedi farmboy. Looming ever closer is the inevitable confrontation with Palpatine, her former master, and all that it entails.
