Summary
"So, Detective..." Johnson trails off, his lips twitching as he tries to pronounce the first name. Finally, he settles on, "Spock? That right?"
"Yes," Spock replies, leaning back in the guest chair. He wants to sit up straight, but he's been here, looking at Johnson not looking at him, for almost fifteen minutes and it's clear that Johnson wants him to be nervous. Spock smiles, instead. "Don't worry about my first name; a lot of humans can't manage it."

Summary
Sam Kirk is easy to recognize when he comes down the hallway; the boy in the pictures and holos along Jim's wall match this young man's face, his quick stride. Spock is sitting in the small alcove across the hall from Jim's room; Mrs. Turbino was allowed to sit with Jim as his next of kin, but though she had invited Spock inside, he waited out here, mind carefully blank.
Spock gets to his feet as Sam approaches and says, "You must be Sam--"
"You Spock?" Sam interrupts. He is breathing more harshly than the walk would account for.
"Yes," Spock says, and immediately Sam pulls his fist back and punches him.

Summary
They make their way across the hall to where the Vulcan delegation has congregated. There is a kind of magnetic repulsion around the group; partygoers step around them, giving them at least a meter-wide berth. Spock steps across the empty space deliberately and is immediately the object of a dozen impassive gazes.
"I wish to greet you," Spock says, "And welcome you to the festivities."
"But you are not the host," one woman says.
"Furthermore it is illogical to bid welcome after we have been announced by the herald. Presumably everyone here is already aware of our presence," says a young man.
"This is Spock," T'Pau says, moving forward and offering him the ta'al. "His training in the ways of logic is... incomplete."
Spock inclines his head. "T'Pau. It is pleasing to see you once again."
"Why?" she asks.

Summary
For all the ceremony devoted to the departure of the Vulcans from Earth, there is no special event that marks their disembarkation onto Abraxin Four. The Enterprise beams down the last of the passengers and Councilor Torven says, "All are accounted for. Live long and prosper, Captain."
"Peace and long life, Councilor," Spock can hear Chapel reply, and the silence is the only indication that the Enterprise has gone. Nevertheless, Spock stares up at the sky and imagines he can see something, a glint against the bright sunlight. He cannot bring himself to look away.

Summary
"So, Sybok," Amanda asks him one day, while they're walking by the fountain. She jumps up to balance on the lip, her rucksack slung over one shoulder and her feet placed with comical care. Sybok watches closely to make sure she doesn't fall. "You speak pretty good Vulcan, I bet."
"You would be correct in your assessment of my fluency," Sybok replies in Vulcan. "May I ask to what purpose you would make this inquiry?"
She laughs, and wobbles a little. Sybok holds out a hand as if he could prevent her fall. "I inquire in order to begin a dialogue regarding my current academic focus," she replies. Sybok can detect no accent, and he wonders where she could have learned Vulcan -- there are only a few dozen of his people living on Earth, and none of them work at the University. "I have a theory regarding translation modules that I wish to explore further. And it occurred to me that you would be a perfect colleague."
