Summary
Harry tried to tell himself it meant nothing. Tom had always been a master of masks — even with him. Especially with him. But the distance between them tonight felt less like formality and more like absence.
Hermione must have read something in his expression, because she gave his arm the faintest squeeze. "You’ll talk to him later?"
Harry didn’t answer.
Ron cleared his throat, breaking the tension. "Remember your wedding day?"
Hermione’s lips curved into a smile. "How could we forget? Half the country tried to get a look at you two."
"And Malfoy nearly hexed the photographer," Ron added.
Harry let himself smile at that. The ceremony had been grand — impossibly so — but he remembered the small moments more. Tom’s hand warm over his as they’d exchanged vows. The faint tremor in his voice on the words ’til death.’ The way the gold band had slid perfectly into place, as if it had always been meant for him.
The memory left a strange ache in his chest now.
Or
Little did Harry know his world would fall apart.
