to her, jackie taylor would always be that little girl in elementary with ribbons in her hair, the one who couldn’t tie her shoes, so she'd asked shauna to do it for her. maybe shauna would forever be on her knees, forced to knot with her tiny hands the shoes of a girl who couldn't care less.
but, the image of jackie’s blood-slicked fingers, the way she held that knife earlier, makes shauna’s mouth water.

the thought is sharp, visceral. there’s something about the way jackie, the class queen of 1996, looks at her sometimes. like shauna could break her in an instant. and maybe she can. maybe she wants to. maybe she already has.

jackie knows. she feels it, even when shauna doesn’t say a word. the way she looks at her; like she's dissecting her. like she's studying her skin, the curve of her throat, the pulse of her veins, trying to figure out how to tear her apart.
she looks away, fast. but, she catches herself looking back anyways. and every time, her heart stutters, her lips wet with the nervous habit of needing to say something.
but all she can think of is the way shauna regards her, like a bullet through the brain—quick, clean, fatal.
