Summary
When Katrina takes everything from him in Louisiana, sixteen-year-old Nick Nelson follows his mum north to New Brunswick — part of the homeland his ancestors were forced to leave centuries ago. In the small island town of Lamèque, Nick struggles with the weight of history pressing in on him: the language he only half-understands, the culture he’s been told he belongs to but really doesn't, and the ache of being both too late and too early to call it home.
Then there’s Charlie Spring — the only other born English-speaker at school. Where Nick feels torn between past and present, French and English, loss and belonging, Charlie simply is. And maybe that’s what Nick needs most: not someone to solve the contradictions, but someone to stand with him in the middle of them.
