Time and space seemed to cease all at once, blood roaring in your ears. You stopped breathing, like you’d been submerged in a pool of ice water. There’s no way. He couldn’t have said that.
You narrowed your eyes, scrutinizing him, seeing the guilt written all over his face, the vulnerability in his demeanor. He barely even blinked, his tired gaze intense and overwhelming as he tightly held your hand. You waited for him to clarify, to follow up with reassurance that you were still his main priority, but he just stood there, staring at you, like he expected you to just accept it.
You hadn’t imagined it. He really did say it.
