Edward knew he had a choice because there's always a choice (which is what he always told himself in a time of distress), and he could have easily decided to just step away, save himself and everyone else the trouble that would follow. He wasn't incapacitated in any way. His senses weren't skewered in a particular way either. There wasn't any reason he couldn't make the right, sensible decision.
